Aigbofa:

Let us assume they are Yorubas, drumming is a honourable profession, you don't even have to pay them and they won't dip their hands in your pocket. There is a reason why ibos don't beg, and it is not because of their pride. It is because of their aggressive and impatient nature. An ibo man starts begging on Monday, by Wednesday, he will be forcefully dipping his hands in the pockets of passersby, by Friday, he will be robbing them with a weapon.

ROFLMAO

Please o, Im not denigrating anyone, but this has got to be the funniest thread Ive read in ages!

I'm not a yoruba but I believe that there's some truth in tpia@ statement about yoruba drummers and what they put on.

With the kind of security and dignitries at ojukwu's burial, I doubt that those hungry men in that picture won't get anywhere near the gate.

Finally, there were yoruba drummers, but though I wasn't opportuned to attend the show to know what kind of attire they were putting on, I believe that they would have been properly dressed. So the picture is a scam.

Your argument is lame. Those men especially the one by the right is Yoruba. Isn't it obvious. Must they wear a hat? Is there a rule that says all Yoruba drummers must wear a hat?

Of the 4, 3 are wearing hats, 2  of which are typical Yoruba hats. I have no grain of doubt that all 4 of them are Yorubas.

There are different grades of entertainers in Yoruba social events -

1. musicians
2. native griots
3. freelance drummers

In the event that the occassion is a burial of an important and famous person, as Ojukwu is, then musicians will be there to entertain the family and the vips and all other dignitaries and attendees generally.  They are not discriminative in their performance, any and all are welcome to dance.  The griots are different!  They drum too.  They are there for the family, for native sons and daughters and known and familiar dignitaries. The griots know the praise poems/songs for the bereaved family, for other native families and for certain improtant visiting dignitaries.  Griots are specific and don't praise anyone but nobles.  Freelance drummers are just there working the crowd and playing tunes to cheer and lighten you up with melody in hope you will appreciate their effort and tip them.   They do not beg, but they look for tips from people who appreciate their entertainment.

In this photo, these people are definitely freelance drummers and I cannot say which tribe they belong.  If this is Yoruba trade, then I will expect that whoever is making money from the craft will equally present the Yoruba facade and try to fit in well for the success that it might bring.   This is where tribal marks help. . .there would have been no contention!   grin

Hey, OP. . . these drummers are looking for tip and not begging at all.

Example. . . if griots were here I would expect them to perform the Ojukwu family ancestral praise, if the family has one. Then visit where the governors are seated and praise each governor by his ancestors praise song, then go to the Chief of Army staff and perform for him with his ancestral song. . . . go to Ado Bayero, even though he is a different ethnic and visiting. . . .if he has one, trust me, Yoruba griots know it and will perform it. They will greet Rawlings with the drum and give accolade to his leadership but not sing a praise for him.
