i am a backyard farmer based in abuja. i have abt 100 laying birds on deep liters and my production has so far been at 60-70%. the low in production has been attributed to the Abuja weather which currently stands at over 38 degree. pls could any one assist to share his experience on the deep liters/ battery cage. i equally like to know where i can get imported fairly used battery cage in abuja or jos. anticipating ur prompt response please.

if u have a place to throw away the waste from the birds go ahead with the battery cage plans, also be ready to face the problem of smell and regular packing of the bird waste, if you cant cope with this u better continue the deep litter system since u have an access to wood shavings. i also have acsess to battery cages, the ''but'' is, i am lagos based

my mum has a backyard poultry of 600 birds and i am the shyt manager lol well, you see in the deep litter system u have the advantage of the birds being able to roam about and exercise, also you really don't have to pack the poo as often as in battery cage, as long as u have access to sawdust. another advantage is that you can sell the poo from d deep litter to farmers as fertilizer cos of its texture and dryness. but the disadvantage is that your eggs will almost always be dirty, cracked and protected by the birds (pecking the picker and all that violence). but the battery cage system is so easy cos u can feed the birds faster and easily but the poo poo is always wet and hard to pack, very smelly and farmers do not like it at alllllll so u have to get rid of it yourself 9huge wahala for me and my boiz) . however you have your eggs clean and cracks are avoided also the birds concentrate on eating,drinking and laying.

The battery cage system is far better for the following reasons
1)Egg production is much higher than in the deep litter because the movement of the chickens is restricted in the battery cage system as the chickens can conserve their energy for production
