It is not true, flies MAINLY carry diseases on their legs and saliva. . .They carry millions of bacteria on their feet alone. Why is Mohammed talking about the wings of flies, when the main source of infection are the feet of flies and their saliva?. . .The prophet of islam says you are to deep the fly into your drink when it falls it it because one if its wings carries disease while the other carries the cure . . .What is this nonsense . . .

Flies DO NOT carry diseases on one wing and cure on the other wing, that is a LIE. . .If a fly drops into your drink its best you throw the drink away than dip the fly into your drink. . . The stress you put on a fly by drowning it into your drink, would only cause it to vomit and defecate even more, releasing an extra portion of germs into your drink. . . .On going research shows that flies do carry antibiotic materials on their surface which can be chemically synthesised. The antibiotic is not found one one of the wings of the fly but on its surface. . .

" Diseases, e.g., malaria, dysentery, sleeping sickness, onchocerciasis, elephantiasis and yellow fever are carried or transmitted from man to man by bloodsucking dipterous flies. Many other diseases are transmitted mechanically by flies due to the habit exhibited by many species of sucking liquid from excreta and other decaying organic matter and then settling on and vomiting on your food.

The fly was made to distribute quantities of pathogenic disease organisms. Its 6 feet are equipped with bristles and sticky pads and its proboscis is hairy. A sticky liquid comes out of the hollow hairs on their feet allowing them to walk upside down and on glass, etc. The fly's digestive tract is an incubator for germs! My mother began to teach me IPM control when I was a very young boy. She said, "Shut the door you are letting in the flies!" This is still good advice - even better is to have a second entry door as an extra barrier against fly invasion.

A well fed fly defecates at least once every 5 minutes!

my friend, you are derailing the thread.you must know that the man who narrated that hadith (abu hureira) in the view of the shia is a chronic liar.secondly, even to sunnis not all hadiths in their "sahih bukhari" is true.so next time dont generalize by placing all muslim in one bundle.that also goes to show the extent of your ignorance.

now here is a refutation to this hadith from a shia website:

http://www.wilayat.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&catid=83:imamat-general&id=222:hadith-about-the-quran-and-sunnah-part-a

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said "If a housefly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it (in the drink), for one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease."

Sahih Al-Bukhari: Volume 4, Book 54, Number 537

Seeing the medical incorrectness of the hadith, Sunnis have done all they could to defend it, making up theories that one of the wings of a fly actually carries a cure! All bacteriologists, all the world over, in all ages, have soundly refuted any such claim as arrant nonsense. The actual fact is that the disease carried by a housefly is from its feet and mouth, NOT the wing! Its wing is absolutely harmless. Also, no cure comes from ANY of its wings, as far as scientific findings are concerned. But, even if we assume that its wings contain a cure, NONE of its wings contain ANY disease. The hadith is a grave mistake.

This is what an education source (owned by Oracle), ThinkQuest, states on the issue:

There are many bacteria and parasites that infest the fly, making flies a major factor in spreading many diseases by touching surfaces with their legs or their saliva. After walking on much excrement, flies may carry up to as many as 6 million bacterias on their feet. So be wary of foods that have been touched by a fly! Here's some information on the diseases some flies are known to help spread.

http://library.thinkquest.org/C0117442/html/diseases.html

Just read how an anti-Islamic element on the Richard Dawkins website, mocks Islam through this “sahih” hadith:

Some Moslem fundie nutbar wrote:

Only in modern times was it discovered that the common fly carried parasitic pathogens for many diseases including malaria, typhoid fever, cholera, and others. It was also discovered that the fly carried parasitic bacteriophagic fungi capable of fighting the germs of all these diseases.

1) Malaria is not a bacterial disease and is therefore unaffected by bacteriophage. It is also not spread by the "common fly" any 5th grader can tell you that

2) Typhoid and cholera are diseases caused by bacteria but are rarely spread by insects but rather poor sanitation.

3) Bacteriophages are NOT fungi.

After that it just gets silly.

Debunked enough for you ...

Zaghlul El-Najjar, a very popular Egyptian apologist, also insists on the correctness of this hadith (one of the wings of the fly contains the sickness and the other the cure ). He claims it has been tested in Western medical institutes and was approved!!! I have the interview in my PC!

Another claim by him in the same interview is also the correctness of another Mohammedan hadith, where camel urine is supposed to be a great medicine [NO KIDDIND!]. Zaghlul El-Najjar assures that there are Swiss medicine companies which NOWADAYS include significant portions of camel urine in their drugs and medicaments, after they have discovered how amazingly beneficial it is.

When asked by his host to name some of these companies, Al-Najjar claimed he doesn't want to turn the program into commercial advertisement.

Decency and modesty like you will find no where?. . .Not true. . .The is subjective. . . .

Banking and Finance- how better can it be. Not only the rich might access loans.Ideas can as well.

False. . .The biggest charity organizations in the world are NOT muslim owned or muslim runned. . .There is more social justice to be found in Denmark, Finland,Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and USA than there is to be found in islamic countries like Iraq, Syria, Jordan,Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Yemen and in Northern Nigeria. . . .

A life of bliss- A true Muslim doesnt worry too much about what they have or dont. the promise of an after-life, waiting to have the promised paradise just keeps you from the aggressive, selfish look out for the world and its goodies.

What could be more meaningless than the mythical heaven or afterlife believers strive towards? No future, because in eternity there can be no future and no past. no goal to strive towards, no purpose, no progress. . . .And the fact that they see the present life as only a stepping stone to that pointless afterlife robs this life of all meaning, too. It becomes something that has to be endured for the sake of the afterlife rather than something to be lived and enjoyed or suffered on its own terms, and for its own purposes. What could be more meaningless than the religious postulation that this life is just a way to get to the after life which is the main target?

scientific- Islam provides scientific basis to most of the discoveries of later years. the Qur'an speaks of a walk on the moon. Honey as a medicine. the embryological development.

Not true, women in the islamic world are the most suppressed in the world today, there is gender apartheid in most parts of the islamic world, in the middle east women are not allowed to contest political office in some countries, many and not allowed to be educated like in Afghanistan, women are not allowed to drive in places like Saudi Arabia, not allowed to move around on their own, not allowed to work, not empowered etc. . .It is a myth that muslim women have rights, it is yet to be seen. . .

Muslim inventions that shaped the modern world

January 29, 2010|By Olivia Sterns for CNN

Think of the origins of that staple of modern life, the cup of coffee, and Italy often springs to mind.

But in fact, Yemen is where the ubiquitous brew has its true origins.

Along with the first university, and even the toothbrush, it is among surprising Muslim inventions that have shaped the world we live in today.

The origins of these fundamental ideas and objects -- the basis of everything from the bicycle to musical scales -- are the focus of "1001 Inventions," a book celebrating "the forgotten" history of 1,000 years of Muslim heritage.

"There's a hole in our knowledge, we leap frog from the Renaissance to the Greeks," professor Salim al-Hassani, Chairman of the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation, and editor of the book told CNN.

"1001 Inventions" is now an exhibition at London's Science Museum. Hassani hopes the exhibition will highlight the contributions of non-Western cultures -- like the Muslim empire that once covered Spain and Portugal, Southern Italy and stretched as far as parts of China -- to present day civilization.

Here Hassani shares his top 10 outstanding Muslim inventions:

1. Surgery

Around the year 1,000, the celebrated doctor Al Zahrawi published a 1,500 page illustrated encyclopedia of surgery that was used in Europe as a medical reference for the next 500 years. Among his many inventions, Zahrawi discovered the use of dissolving cat gut to stitch wounds -- beforehand a second surgery had to be performed to remove sutures. He also reportedly performed the first caesarean operation and created the first pair of forceps.

2. Coffee

Now the Western world's drink du jour, coffee was first brewed in Yemen around the 9th century. In its earliest days, coffee helped Sufis stay up during late nights of devotion. Later brought to Cairo by a group of students, the coffee buzz soon caught on around the empire. By the 13th century it reached Turkey, but not until the 16th century did the beans start boiling in Europe, brought to Italy by a Venetian trader.

3. Flying machine

"Abbas ibn Firnas was the first person to make a real attempt to construct a flying machine and fly," said Hassani. In the 9th century he designed a winged apparatus, roughly resembling a bird costume. In his most famous trial near Cordoba in Spain, Firnas flew upward for a few moments, before falling to the ground and partially breaking his back. His designs would undoubtedly have been an inspiration for famed Italian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci's hundreds of years later, said Hassani.

4. University

In 859 a young princess named Fatima al-Firhi founded the first degree-granting university in Fez, Morocco. Her sister Miriam founded an adjacent mosque and together the complex became the al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University. Still operating almost 1,200 years later, Hassani says he hopes the center will remind people that learning is at the core of the Islamic tradition and that the story of the al-Firhi sisters will inspire young Muslim women around the world today.

5. Algebra

The word algebra comes from the title of a Persian mathematician's famous 9th century treatise "Kitab al-Jabr Wa l-Mugabala" which translates roughly as "The Book of Reasoning and Balancing." Built on the roots of Greek and Hindu systems, the new algebraic order was a unifying system for rational numbers, irrational numbers and geometrical magnitudes. The same mathematician, Al-Khwarizmi, was also the first to introduce the concept of raising a number to a power.

6. Optics

"Many of the most important advances in the study of optics come from the Muslim world," says Hassani. Around the year 1000 Ibn al-Haitham proved that humans see objects by light reflecting off of them and entering the eye, dismissing Euclid and Ptolemy's theories that light was emitted from the eye itself. This great Muslim physicist also discovered the camera obscura phenomenon, which explains how the eye sees images upright due to the connection between the optic nerve and the brain.

7. Music

Muslim musicians have had a profound impact on Europe, dating back to Charlemagne tried to compete with the music of Baghdad and Cordoba, according to Hassani. Among many instruments that arrived in Europe through the Middle East are the lute and the rahab, an ancestor of the violin. Modern musical scales are also said to derive from the Arabic alphabet.

8. Toothbrush

According to Hassani, the Prophet Mohammed popularized the use of the first toothbrush in around 600. Using a twig from the Meswak tree, he cleaned his teeth and freshened his breath. Substances similar to Meswak are used in modern toothpaste.

9. The crank

Many of the basics of modern automatics were first put to use in the Muslim world, including the revolutionary crank-connecting rod system. By converting rotary motion to linear motion, the crank enables the lifting of heavy objects with relative ease. This technology, discovered by Al-Jazari in the 12th century, exploded across the globe, leading to everything from the bicycle to the internal combustion engine.

10. Hospitals

"Hospitals as we know them today, with wards and teaching centers, come from 9th century Egypt," explained Hassani. The first such medical center was the Ahmad ibn Tulun Hospital, founded in 872 in Cairo. Tulun hospital provided free care for anyone who needed it -- a policy based on the Muslim tradition of caring for all who are sick. From Cairo, such hospitals spread around the Muslim world.

Sometimes it is better to ignore ignorance thinkers; I should have just ignored you.
If you are thinking rationally, the Wright brothers of USA are given the recognition of being the first to fly. Is that really so? But why are they given this title except that every modern machine of flight after them follows their principle of design/machinery.

Muslim being inventor of chess is a claim in the above mindset and national geographic is smarter than you.

If gender equality was preached by any religion, or society or even advocated by any man or woman, it got its fountain of water to nourish it from the muslim's Quran and its adherents; Nusayba was of one of the first advocates for the rights of Muslim women. Notably, she asked the Prophet Muhammad, "Why does God only address men (in the Quran)?" Soon after this exchange, the Prophet received a revelation in Chapter 33, Verse 35 that mentions women can attain every quality to which men have access. The verse also conclusively settled that women stand on the same spiritual level as men. She was viewed as a visionary who transcended her own generation.

Wings of a Fly: The New Buzz of Antibiotics

Written By:  Mona Al-Raqas ( Yemen Post Staff )
  Article Date: December 17, 2007

The last thing that might come to mind is that we can find antibiotics on the surface of flies.  over a thousand years ago, Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) said: "If a fly falls down to your vessel, drown it then remove it, for one of its wings has the ailment and the other has the cure," [narrated by Al-Bokhari] Through this Hadith, it has been clear that a fly has bacteria in one of its wings and has the antibacterial defense in the other wing.

People of other religions found it somehow strange and difficult to believe that Muslims drown the fly into their food as they considered it something unacceptable. They believed that flies carry only diseases, and drowning it into food or drink is an unreasonable action. Although flies live on decayed food and garbage where bacteria, germs and microbes exist, Allah made the miracle on the right wing of the fly. He, the Almighty, creates the antibiotics that help annihilating all these viruses.

In Australia, a team from the Department of Biological Sciences, Macquarie University, worked on a research to prove that flies have remarkable antimicrobial defenses. The team's leader, Dr. Joanne Clarke proved this discovery through a number of experiments.

"Our research is a small part of a global research effort for new antibiotics, but we are looking where we believe no-one has looked before,” said Dr. Clarke, who presented the team’s findings at the Australian Society for Microbiological Conference in Melbourne.

She added, "We are now trying to identify the specific antibacterial compounds which will be chemically synthesized from the surface of the flies."

Another researcher from Tokyo University, Dr. Juan Alvarez Bravo confirms that in the near future "people will be astonished to find that flies are being used as antibiotics in the hospitals."

He also assures that scientists are working on the flies to get a number of effective remedies for different diseases.

Working on this theory, scientists found that getting the remedy from flies is strange but acceptable in science. Other researchers from the United States are trying to find anti-pathogenetic ways from the flies. They also note that having the cure from the flies will be something reasonably acceptable by people the coming few years.

Researchers from Auburn University discovered a kind of protein in the saliva of the fly with ability to help recover wounds and cracked skin. Likewise, researchers from Stanford University discovered a fly substance with ability to strengthen the immunity system in human beings.

According to scientists, there is a big similarity between the heart of a fly and that of a human being, prompting them to use flies to produce a medicament for the human heart diseases.

Again, many scientists agree that flies carry lots of diseases but never get infected because of the antimicrobial defenses found in one of their wings.

A laboratory technician Dr. Abdulhakim al- Qobati pointed out that "this is a heavenly miracle from Allah the Almighty to put the disease and the cure in a tiny creature such as the fly."

He also clarified that the fly is a simple way to transfer diseases due to the environment that the fly used to live in. Allah Creates both the remedy and the disease in the two wings of this fly to show His Supreme Power, explained al-Qobati.

When a fly has various harmful bacteria, it needs something defensible to continue its survival and that is why Allah creates the antibacterial supplies in its body.  A fly puts its saliva into food as soon as it touches it. The fly makes some movements by its limbs from its head to its mouth to put the bacteria. Through these movements, it transfers the microbes and germs to food.

Researches and scientists proved that in the flies' stomach there are some parasites in the form of circular cells. These cells contain of a specific enzyme. In no time, those cells spread out to the surface of the fly through the joints of its stomach. Due to an inner pressure of each cell (caused for example by drowning the fly), it explodes and results its contents in a form of a liquid spray of this enzyme which has strong properties and abilities to dissolve all microbes. By drowning the fly, the inner pressure of the cell is occurred, so the enzyme will come out and kill all the bacteria caused by the fly and this is why Islam demands drowning the fly.

The discoveries of modern researches have been revealed in the Holy Qura'n long ago, "O men! Here is a parable set forth! Listen to it! Those on whom, besides Allah, ye call, cannot create (even) a fly, if they all met together for the purpose! And if the fly should snatch away anything from them, they would have no power to realize it from the fly. Feeble are those who petition and those whom they petition!” [Sura al-Haj, verse 73]

Hundred thousands of flies' types exist in the universe; however, just ten types share us living in our houses. The female fly lays down more than hundred eggs in the dung of some animals or in the garbage. After one day, the larva comes out and feeds by the surrounding environment. Two weeks later, they become full-grown flies. In four generations, one fly can lay down 1.5 million eggs, but fortunately, the majority dies due to weather circumstances or becomes food for birds and other insects.  Maximally, a fly can live for sixty days.

From Cairo, such hospitals spread around the Muslim world.

brother, dont waste your time defending "sahih bukhari" and this or that book if it is not the holy Quran.to muslims, only the Quran is the infallible word of God.there are many pathetic hadiths here and there.there is no harm in accepting the reality that there are true hadiths that we accept and fabricated ones we reject.that is the reality of hadiths.

it will do no harm by exposing men as fallible and liars.trying to defend the indefensible to protect the honor of men (who are neither prophets nor infallible) is where we could fall back and hold Islam to ransom.

seguun: [b][/b] At least you admitted flies do carry antibiotic materials, what you are only disputing is whether it is located on the wings or on the surface...I ask you is one of its wings located in its belly?
Also you forgot to add that it now established that by dipping the fly in the drink, the disease in the drink can be cured:

False. . . .Dipping a fly in ethanol and running it true a filter can extract the antibiotics that needs to be chemically synthesized first not in the drink it fell inside, dropping a fly inside a drink will only contaminate the drink the more, it is an ongoing research according to the paper i read some few years ago. . .

This news paper report from the Yemenpost is very misleading and contains some misinformation. . .They report talks about a muslim laboratory technician who says that scientist generally agree that flies carry antimicrobial defenses on one of their wings. . .This statement is very false, there is no scientific research that agrees with his statements. . .

Here is the paper. . .Compare it to the sensational report in the Yemenpost and see for your self. . .

The surface of flies is the last place you would expect to find antibiotics, yet that is exactly where a team of Australian researchers is concentrating their efforts.

Working on the theory that flies must have remarkable antimicrobial defences to survive rotting dung, meat and fruit, the team at the Department of Biological Sciences, Macquarie University, set out to identify those antibacterial properties manifesting at different stages of a fly's development.

"Our research is a small part of a global research effort for new antibiotics, but we are looking where we believe no-one has looked before," said Ms Joanne Clarke, who presented the group's findings at the Australian Society for Microbiology Conference in Melbourne this week. The project is part of her PhD thesis.

The scientists tested four different species of fly: a house fly, a sheep blowfly, a vinegar fruit fly and the control, a Queensland fruit fly which lays its eggs in fresh fruit. These larvae do not need as much antibacterial compound because they do not come into contact with as much bacteria.

Flies go through the life stages of larvae and pupae before becoming adults. In the pupae stage, the fly is encased in a protective casing and does not feed. "We predicted they would not produce many antibiotics," said Ms Clarke.

They did not. However the larvae all showed antibacterial properties (except that of the Queensland fruit fly control).

As did all the adult fly species, including the Queensland fruit fly (which at this point requires antibacterial protection because it has contact with other flies and is mobile).

Such properties were present on the fly surface in all four species, although antibacterial properties occur in the gut as well. "You find activity in both places," said Ms Clarke.

"The reason we concentrated on the surface is because it is a simpler extraction."

The antibiotic material is extracted by drowning the flies in ethanol, then running the mixture through a filter to obtain the crude extract.

When this was placed in a solution with various bacteria including E.coli, Golden Staph, Candida (a yeast) and a common hospital pathogen, antibiotic action was observed every time.

"We are now trying to identify the specific antibacterial compounds," said Ms Clarke. Ultimately these will be chemically synthesised.

Because the compounds are not from bacteria, any genes conferring resistance to them may not be as easily transferred into pathogens. It is hoped this new form of antibiotics will have a longer effective therapeutic life.

even Islam raised the quality of northern women among their own population; Nana was a princess, poet and teacher. She was fluent in Arabic, Fulfulde, Hausa and Tamacheq and well versed in Arabic, Greek and Latin classics. In 1830, she formed a group of female teachers who journeyed throughout the region to educate women in poor and rural regions. With the republication of her works, that underscore women's education, she has become a rallying point for African women. Today, in northern Nigeria, Islamic women's organizations, schools and meeting halls are frequently named in her honor.

And before this, the hausa women who have no Islamic religion could not aspire to anything.

What are the odds your my grand father in the village will make a claim that flies carry cure (antibiotic) on them?

After you've answered that, what are the odds that some one who lived in d desert 1400 years ago would make such a claim?

Then what are the odds a man like that will make such claim about flies and not rats, bees, spiders, cockroaches etc?

And mind you this is an ongoing research which means there is still room for further understanding and modification of the hypothesis, to come close to what the prophet stated some 1400years ago.

Also note that the prophet of Islam did not make this statement as a boast (like hey, come see I know science) it was part of his usual teachings as a mercy to mankind the way he taught us:
Not to drink water while standing
Not to eat with our left hand
Not sleep on our bellies or our backs but on our sides
Not to fill our stomachs with food but just eat enough for sustenance
Not to get angry
Not to walk in one shoe
Not to eat hot food
Not to eat fast
Not to urinate or defecate on the rood or in the shade
Not urinate in a standing water
Not breathe in the cup While drinking water (and I could go on and on)

Bottom line the only way he could make such a claim is either he could see into the future and read the Australian scientists' report OR HE WAS INSPIRED BY THE ALL KNOWING ALL WISE.

Actually, I expected a more logical line of reasoning. TO counter my points effectively would have been to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Islam did not contribute the above to humanity. Rather you come up to say that others do better or Muslim nations fare worse than others.

It would have been understandable if your questins were on whether Muslims do take these parts of Islam seriously. To what extent they have taken to them and how effective they've been in situations where they have tried them in case of the Islamic banking, laws of inheritance and others like them.

It is a contribution non the less but I say it is subjective and not uniquely islamic as the OP says because modest dressing with Hijab(covering the hair or head for women) for example as been in existence long before islam came into the field. . .Jewish women have been dressing like that during the biblical times. . .

My point is your claims that islam contributed to science is not true, if we are to go by this claim, then most of what we know about science are the contributions of atheistism, judaism, buddhism and christianity since most of the scientific ideas, discoveries and inventions are the handy works of atheist, christians, buddist and jews. . .But that is not the case. . .

deols: Actually, I expected a more logical line of reasoning.

I actually agree with some of what you have written but my objections came when you started using words like, islam came with x idea like you will find no where else or "Islam brings social justice. like you would not find elsewhere" or "how better can it be". . . .Some of what you talked about are not uniquely islamic and have been in existence before islam, others are better practiced in non muslim societies than in islamic societies. . .Saying that islam brings social justice like you will find no where for example is simply not true. . .

What are the odds your my grand father in the village will make a claim that flies carry cure (antibiotic) on them?

After you've answered that, what are the odds that some one who lived in d desert 1400 years ago would make such a claim?

People that lived 3000 years ago have made claims that we are just discovering today or we just discovered not long ago for example ancient Greek philosophers like Epicurus(he first suggested that every thing consist of indivisible tiny atoms), Pytheas (correctly asserts that tides are related to the phases of the moon),Aristarchus (suggests that the heavenly bodies revolve around the sun and calculated (because of the lack of parallax) that the stars were extrememly far away), Anaximander (was the first recorded person to suggest the Earth is a sphere) and many other. . .This guys lived long before Mohammed and made very powerful suggestions and predictions that they could not have "known" back in the days because they lived very long ago. . .Some of them got into trouble for their line of reasoning and the claims they proposed. . .

Then what are the odds a man like that will make such claim about flies and not rats, bees, spiders, cockroaches etc?

The hadith does not say the prophet said flies carry antibiotics on their backs. . .Here is his claim. . ."IF a fly falls in one's drink, one should reimmerse it again in that drink for one wing of the fly has a disease while the other has a cure". . .The research does not support that claim. . .

What he said is very different from the research findings. . .As i aforementioned other Greek philosophers have made very great claims thousands of years ago before Mohammed, if what you say about the prophet of islam is true then those guys were also inspired by the ancient Greek Gods like Zeus, Apollo etc. . .
