mat is not necessary for prayer. direction is what is absolutely needed.
you can sit on a chair if you cant stand.
you can actually lay down if you cant even sit.

and there are many types of prayers; salaat, dua, etc.
salah is a dhikr.

islam is easy, if the mind yearns for it.

as a confirmed atheist, u dont need a mat at all. Just pray to ur 'god' any how
