ikanya: The new American position on Goodluck J's administration simply shows that GEJ is becoming some how independent minded. It simply shows that the administration is reasonably deviating from the direction that serves majorly the American interests as opposed to the Nigerians'.
Obviously, it was not for the love of Nigerians that the Obama administration has come up with this people oriented position.

Actually, it shows that the Americans are fed-up with the man's incompetence. The Americans realise that if they don't get tough with GEJ, Boko Haram will grow bolder, deadlier and more effective. Add that to Al Qaeda's newly found swagger in West Africa and the Latin American drug cartels' growing influence in this region, you will understand that the Americans cannot afford to continue to patronise him.

You think OBJ is distancing himself from GEJ by accident? It is not O. It is a clear sign of abandoning ship whilst it is expedient to do so. We face really tough times ahead. Why? GEJ doesn't have it. Hence, he cannot give what he does not have and other players will make moves that might not favour the generality of Nigerians- at least, we can attest to the pain and anguish Boko Haram have caused in less than 5 years.

This has always been the agenda.Americans seems to be coming for the kill now, trying to weep up deep sentiments among the people so that the whole thing will escalate.

The problem of the north has been for ages as a result bad leadership, coupled with the primitive religion that does not encoUrage individual drives and progress in anyway, especially among the deprived.

The problem of the north is the same with east, west and south but because northern system does not encourage individual or units progress, there underdevolopment seem to be out of hand.

The rich in the north just want the poor to remain poor for ever,so that they can always give them pittance in compliance to one of the pillars of their religion, sadaka. That is why they never encourage education among the down trodden,no social or medical mobilization of any kind that can lift the people out of mental dungeon. They just want them to remain primitive and helpless LIKE THE CAST SYSTEM IN INDIA.

I am not a fan of gej but nigerian problem is not caused by gej,he inherited it,people like obj should be brought to book to pay for what is going on.

I find this Carson piece both annoying and to be honest quite cowardly from the US. How can it be the government of Nigeria's fault that fundamentalists
bomb fellow citizens. Is this cowardice on display in a poor attempt to curry favour with the fundamentalist. The US should stop trying, the Boko Haram
Islamist fundamentalist hate the US without reservation and nothing they say now will/can ever change that.

He says:
“Nigerians are hungry for progress and improvement in their lives, but northern Nigerians feel this need most acutely. Life in Nigeria may be tough for many, but life in the North is grim for almost all,”

Is the desperation in other parts of Nigeria? Has he been to the villages in west, east, ss and middle belt to see the desperation
Just because they don't go around bombing everyone, does not mean that there are less desperate.

He writes:
“Public opinion polls and news reports suggest there is a strong sentiment throughout the country - but especially in the North - that government is not on the side of the people and their poverty is a result of government neglect, corruption, and abuse.”

Is this Carson's justification for the bombing, how come the south have not been bombing up the country. Why didn't these fundamentalist bomb the country when we had a northern president?

He also writes:
Carson said President Goodluck Jonathan’s government needed a new social compact with northern citizens, local non-governmental organisations, civil society, and religious leaders, adding that “Abuja needs an economic recovery strategy that complements its security strategy.

No Mr Carson, Northern nigeria needs pact with themselves. They need to sort out themselves and work out what they want. The northerners need to ask their leaders why the region is in its current state. They need to work out that an almajiri school that only
teaches islamic education will not bring entrepreneurs that will create jobs in the region, they need to work out the bombings and instability will not attract investors to the region. They, the northerners need to get their own house in order and stop blaming everyone else for problems of the region.

Finally he writes:
“Northern populations are currently trapped between violent extremists on the one hand and heavy-handed government responses on the other. They need to know that their president is going to go to extraordinary lengths to fix their problems “he said.

The US have been predicting the collapse of Nigeria for some time and this Carson fellow is just another voice applying the screw. One has to ask, what is the USA and Obama after? Is it the oil, is it the destabilisation of a potentially great country so another China won’t rise to compete with them, is it the joy in destroying the African continent. It completely baffles me what is to be gained by America in this case. It is easy to see why so many dislike America and its foreign policy..

emmysam2: [b]Agreed, Boko Haram "may be" the product of poverty and social stagnation in the north. But lets face the truth,.. they should have their leaders to blame and not meccessarily blame the present government. The Nigerian situation is unique. The Bottomline is every political issue is always Religion. America may not neccessarily understand the true picture. Consider these facts?

1.The North and its Corrupt Leaders have Ruled and Ruin this country in many years than their southern counterparts. The Northern Leaders were better placed to turn around the lives of their citizens but fail to do that. Coupled with the fact that the Northern Religious doctrine encourages Class Structures that rather enslaves and enpoverish the masses... hence the situation where the gap between the rich and the poor is alarmingly wider in the North.
2. Will Boko Haram have come up had it been a Muslim North had won the last Presidential poll? No! No!! No!!! To tell you the truth, Boko Haram is nothing but a calculated attempt to bring down the present government. This agenda is very clear.
3. What are Boko Haram claims? Do their claims justify the senseless killings? Why are the killings targeted at christians?

I bet anyone, If power should go back to the North and we will no longer hear of Boko Haram again.
I rest my case

Um . . .. Keep playing victim, and lying to yourself in all this.

When the craziness eventually arrives at your door, maybe then you will realize that then leaders in Nigeria include the various levels of Government, and not just the northern rulers you like to hate. The many other terrorists groups that exist in that country are still working. MEND is in the south still carrying out killings even up till last month. There are many other groups out there desperately seeking their change in the limelight.
Pretty soon, you will know them if your government(federal, state, and local included) continue to run the country as they are free to.

Nigerians should wake up. The present US govt do not have our interest at heart by not designating Boko Haram a terrorist organisation

That leaves one question. Why hasn't Boko Haram been designated a terrorist organization? it has killed more people than some of the organizations on the list and it is dedicated to ethnic cleansing, something that we decided was unacceptable when it came to Muslims. Shouldn't it then be equally unacceptable when it is being done by Muslims to Christians?

Apparently not. Johnnie Carson, Obama's Chicago born man in Africa, and the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs at subcommittee hearings chaired by Senator Coons, dismissed the idea of designating Boko Haram a terrorist organization and claimed falsely, that despite Boko Haram's repeated statements about its goals and its very name, that this conflict was not driven by religion, but by social inequities.

Questions about Boko Haram's terrorism against Christians were rerouted into what Carson described as a "comprehensive" approach to the problem, sidelining security assistance in favor of providing social aid to the Muslim north and urging the Nigerian government to stop aggressively fighting terrorism.

Boko Haram had been inspired by the Taliban and American diplomats are forcefully pushing the Nigerian government into adopting the same disastrous failed "Hearts and Minds" policies of Afghanistan. Instead of combating Boko Haram, we will be increasing funding to the Muslim north and even opening a consulate there. And of course urging Nigeria to appoint more Muslims to high ranking positions.

While the subcommittee on Homeland Security has urged that Boko Haram be designated a terrorist group, diplomats in the State Department are doing everything possible to sabotage the effort. The lies are coming fast and thick. In the New York Times, Jean Herskovitz wrote an op-ed insisting that there was no Boko Haram, suggesting instead that random criminal gangs were really responsible for the mass murder of Christians.

As a government employee, Johnnie Carson was somewhat more discreet, but took the same position that the real fault lies with the Christian South and the Nigerian government for keeping Muslims oppressed and in poverty, and that the only solution is to pour money, jobs and power into the north. The unstated endgame of this is to create a stalemate that will force the Nigerian political system to make further concessions to Islam and the Sharia law that Boko Haram is fighting for.

1. Boko Haram is not going to go away until there are no christians in Nigeria
2. Boko Haram isn"t just a product of poor muslims, this is part of a global jihad and Nigerians are asleep to that fact
3. Christians and other religions will continue to face increasing threats to their lives and existence until they get what they want
4. The Jihad goes beyond the bombs. It also includes the gradual concessions made by each succesive govt to the muslim not favouring the acceptance of islam into govt such as hajj, almajiri and national

If corruption is truly addressed in all tiers of governance, a lot of these evil uprising could be addressed. Corruption, i.e. looting public funds; teaching hatred; turning a blind eye while so many people give birth to Children whom they have no plans of taking care of; criminally allowing a huge population to be unproductive; failing to develop resources in all local government areas, thereby making everyone productive. Past administrations truly failed Nigeria, and administrations since 1999 have had it tough when they tried to correct some things.

It is the northern leadership who have stood back and allowed this fundamentalism to grow. They have covertly praised it and courted it, most recently El Rufai even justified it. They probably thought they could use it to their advantage to pressure the current president. But as you can see the chickens have come home to roost and their homes, towns and cities are under attack too.

There is nothing that the Nigerian government has done that does not affect every region in Nigeria. So what is so special about the heartland of Boko Haram - Nothing, absolutely nothing. Somebody there in the north lit a match out of greed and now the house has caught fire!

Was it poverty that made BH bomb UN building? These Americans are up to something. Let them come to my LG and see an entire LG area that until recently (cos of oil discovery) could not boast of a single KM of tarred rd, could only boast of electricity in just one villa, where the communities had to on their own build its Primary and Secondary schools, renovates its primary health care etc. Should we then go and blow up d LG and State govt houses cos we were neglected? Nonsense! If the northern leaders can donate 5% of their wealth both genuine and stolen to their region, that region can become an eldorado.

Their born to rule mentality is what gave rise to bokoharam or did we not hear from their leaders that ''those who make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable'' we also heard that they will ''make Nigeria ungovernable for any president that is not a northern Hausa muslim. Federal.

State.

Local.

So which is Carson castigating for lack of performance in the North?

Keep in mind that both state and local are fully controlled by that same north....

@ ekt_bear there lies your hypocrisy. Okay would try and check it up apologises in arrears if otherwise, but coming to this issue what are the qualities people should have looked out for in a country where their are so many educated illiterates and sentiments rather then facts and figures are used to win elections, where a govt lays blame on surrounding countries as training bases for harboring a bunch of people that come together and affiliate themselves as a terrorist organisation, steal from banks to finance their activities, and the government at the centre is witch hunting some people that they are sponsoring these NONSENCE ELEMENTS, when a government would remove subsidy and after say they are buying buses for subsidizing transportation forgetting interstate forgetting that food which forms the major stay for survival is grown in states outside the major urban cities ie taking the cart before the horse (what is going to pull whom) and corruption is running riot under his watch from all angles when say the SGF would single handedly look at his office and post 400 staff to the OHOS to do nothing just to continue to earn salaries while performing no function and not being attached to any MDA official performance or is it operational corruption and then the government says they can reduce over heads while collecting overheads for all these staffs posted out their training allowances its just a whole mess I just can't quantify it and the clueless man went on 1 week leave for drinking and getting drunk in state house Rubbish!

So what's the cause of America's Homegrown terrorists (Google it) ?

Don't fall for the temptation of attributing Obama's attitude towards Nigeria as anything other than petty hatred such as harbored by Oprah Winfrey or the average self-hating African American, Caribbean or Ghanaian man on the street, just because he is a president. The sooner Obama leaves office the better for Nigerians. Although i fear it may not make much of a difference since he, Obama as a black man, may have legitimated our persecution by setting a precedent for it.

Is Carson saying that the same oil money generated from the south which has been the main source of fund for development of the various regions of the country has not always been shared to the north? Is he saying that the Nigerian government or the presidency should take over the job of the state governors and local government executives? Is Carson saying that there has not been leaders (presidents) from the north who have seen and perceived the abject poverty of their people? Is he saying that the massive control of the oil sector/resources of the country could not have been used to develop the north? What is Obama saying, by the way? whoever wants to talk about Boko Haram should blame the northern leaders who trained and equipped them with weapons. US should learn to make sincere comments regarding the Nigerian situation(if they know) today. We are aware that their comments have a way of affecting the security situation of Nigeria (positively or negatively). If they wish to sponsor the division they had earlier predicted, let them come on openly and stop making this kind of comments that will not help the country either. The Nigerian people are becoming wiser. They should know that we can decode whatever they encode when they make these kind of comments.
