Re: Almajiri Project An Exercise In Futility – Shehu Sani by oiseworld: 6:45pm On Apr 12, 2012
i'll agree that gej missed it this time. Since when did the govtmt start funding religion in the name of almanjiri. Its a wrong step to take and wrong thing to do in this very religious country of ours.
Are there no public school for this children to attend and learn arabic as an optional course.

What does Shehu sani mean. Is he saying that fg shud nt have carried out project. Is he saying gej is partial on d issue. If there anybody that have deceived northern/nigeria it political leaders in the north. If building almajiri school can not solve the problem of poverty and violence in the north then let the phillistines go there way.

I think the point he is trying to make is that would GEJ have completed the project if there had not been Boko Haram insurgency? I could remember the project idea started during the years of his late predecessor Umaru Yar'Adua. More so, the project is not aimed at genuinely eradicating poverty in Northern Nigeria or developing the Northern Part of Nigeria but rather it was carried out or hastily completed to appease certain quarters of the Northern Elite "Sultan, et'al" either to assure him on the support of curbing the menace of Boko Haram or for a later favour he is seeking from the North may be for his futile 2015 ambition

They want Almajiri scul,GEJ gave them,if he didn't,they will say he is against Islam. The north will continue to remain in abject poverty if they continue to cry to the Federal Govt to reduced poverty in the north.they should direct their frustrations to their respective state governors who does not have the road map and have not come up with any road map to adress their problem.Me think Shehu Sani should focus his energy in challenging northern Governors who are the Archtects of their underdevelopment.

If we are to go by the FG schools in this country 99% of us on NL today would not be here. GEJ is retarded completely. let him or BEAF answer this question - how many children those school will accommodate? later what one will be hearing is that for your children to be admitted you need to bribe.
Those children will turn to radical muslim at the end.

FG is producing future terror.

Good move GEJ! Keep giving them the weapons for their own destruction, and at same keep garnering political favor (2015 re-election votes) from them. Agbaya oshi! Almajiri Sch ko, All-mad-gory Sch ni.
Charlatans!

Re: Almajiri Project An Exercise In Futility – Shehu Sani by ektbear: 9:25pm On Apr 12, 2012
None of this makes any sense to me.

Rather than encouraging people to go to regular schools that teach useful things, they are encouraging more almajiris. Or what else will an almajiri school but more almajiris?

This is putting lipstick on a pig..

It is unfortunate that the sultan involves himself in this public deception and propaganda. Building of classes will not solve the menace of Almajiri in Nigeria, the problem of Almajiri is not lack of classes or schools, it is parents who gave birth to children they cannot take care of and they send them to cities in the name of seeking Islamic education, that is it! Ban Almajiri and make it illegal, take care of the schools located in villages, build more classes there and the alaramma can teach them in those classes as extra lesson after normal school hours. There is nothing good in establishing Almajiri education, this is absolute error and it will not go anywhere.

You identified a problem which needs to be solved - i.e. adults who are having children without the ability to raise them hence sending them away under the pretext of Almajiri education. I agree that this problem needs to be addressed very urgently.

Would you agree with me that the children who have already been born, be given the opportunity of good education, even if it is in the form of the 400 Almajiri schools being planned by the government?

Not a waste of fund if the school is utilized to train those who fall into that category. The government need to monitor the progress and impact this school would have on them. Well, it is not a wast of fund if on the right track to educate the people for the good of the country. On the other hand, it is a waste if the Islamic fundamental group hijacked it for extremism.
Re: Almajiri Project An Exercise In Futility – Shehu Sani by gulfer: 8:33am On Apr 13, 2012
Like the amnesty programme; a waste of resources! The middle class that was eroded is the cause of these issues and GEJ should retrace steps taken by his predecessors that led us to this pariah and put in place workable programmes that can bring back the middle class' prosperity.

Koolking: Ofcourse no, boys who are loyal to the power that be are rewarded. Don't forget, this is a national contract. Succinctly, the project objective is D.O.D. Not only the Almajiris that need education, in fact the 90% population who does not feel the impact of govt needs education as against the 10% that holds the entire national resources for personal aggrandizement. The project looks noble but is the govt sincere over this project? There are schools scattered all over Nigeria, have they been able as citadels of transformation through learning change the status quo of Nigeria? Are these special schools really panacea to the problems of the north and Nigeria as an entity? Is the problem of the north politically and religiously motivated? Has similar projects in the recent past like the amnesty to Niger Delta militants brought succor to the embattled regions? Methinks, this is another white elephant project. Not solely based on patriotism but a misplacement and a benchmark of a failed and confused govt. Pls, permit me without sounding pessimistic, this is another failure in the offing.
Re: Almajiri Project An Exercise In Futility – Shehu Sani by dont8(m): 9:19am On Apr 13, 2012
Hope GEJ didn't setup committee before arriving at that conclusion. But seriously, the programme is a noble one, only if they're sincere and why name it Almajiri! It's derogatory, they should change it to to a more befitting one.

angry angry angry So what should be done? Create Ministry of Boko Haram?
They shit for you, you complain. Them clean your yansh, you complain. What exactly do you want? It is becoming clear there is an intellectual wing of irridentists to the Boko Haram menace comprising people like Shehu Sani and Dr Junaid Mohammed, who are encouraging all these violence in other to achieve another objective.

Now you are directly blaming the Sultan and Babaginda for being the root of the current violence and poverty ravaging. It might take long, but Truth has a way of coming out even from the mouth of those who want us to believe otherwise, namely: the real cause of poverty, poor educational attainment, collapsed infratructure (health, education, social and industries) is due to the long years of North mis-ruling the country via military coups.

Now the ckickens are coming home to roost.

GEJ is trying the solve the problem created by past Northern rulers, and you are sitting on the sideline heckling. Shame!
I weep for for the North. embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed

Even if power is handed back to them for another 100 years, nothing will change in that part of the world because of fake radicals like Shehu Sani and Dr Junaid.

If Shehu Sanni can say it is a waste, then why are we arguing because he should know what people in the North need right now. GEJ should do consultations before implementing (starting) some of these 1980 plans that had been kept for so long by successive government. He should work on the country's current dynamics and Almajiri school up North is not one of them.

IN Nigeria, we claim we want to be amongst the 20 top economies by the Year 2020 and the way to achieve this is by building Almajiri schools of N240 million which the president went to commission? why is that that all over the wold its only nigeria that has Almajiri school

The issue of almajiraira has remained worrisome in the minds of northern elite. This is because the practice has been a source of ebarrassment to the region.
The word ALMAJIRI emanated from the Arabic word “AL- MUHAJIRIN”, the concept of Al-MUHAJIRUN came as a result of Prophet Muhammed’s migration from Mecca to Medina, meaning the emigrant. In Hausa land the term Almajiri could take any of the following forms any person irrespective of gender, who begs for assistance on the street or from house to house as a result of some deformity or disability; children between the ages of seven and fifteen who attend informal religious school who equally roam about with the purpose of getting assistance or aims; or even a child who engages in some form of labour to earn a living.
Almajiri syndrome can be said to be another form of child abuse, in the sense that children are exposed to laborious work at tender age, normally children between the ages of seven and twenty. Their mallams cannot feed nor provide the necessities of life for them therefore they embark on begging or laboured work in order to survive and gain.
The Almajiri syndrome or phenomenon is alarming because It takes a different dimension compared to the initial idea of Almajiri formation. Almajirai plural of almajiri are children that are sent to school for learning by parents, but instead of doing what they are expected to, they will be seen roaming the street beging and engaging in unnecessary activities in which they will eventually became a burden to the society due to lack of career guidance and counselling by teachers.
Such children (the Almajirai') are usually aggressive and violent as they are exposed to different forms of pressure, problems, hunger and jobs that demand several times their energy and weight before the job Is accomplished. Some of them do go to restaurants to wash plates, fetch water so that they will be given left over foods. They are all over the streets, very dirty, hungry thirsty, they lack all kinds of necessities of life and at times they cause traffic hazards.
Child labour is a fundamental factor of child abuse, these children who are laboured about in our communities are our children. They are the leaders of tommorrow as aged ones are dying up the younger ones replace them. They are our future hope and pillars, without which the future may look bleak in terms of development, because all these violent exhibiting children grow up to become criminals in the society within which they live, hence set back in the society because the increase in number of crime that is being attributed to increase of criminals in the society.
This issue of begging is more common in the northern part of Nigeria where the children are being denied their rights including the right to western education. As the case may be, these children turn out to be loosers in whatever perspective because some of them may not concentrate to learn even the spiritual knowledge they are sent for talkless of the western education. They are automatically denied.
Usually a child becomes an Almajiri when there is high striking poverty line in his family to take care of his essential needs such as sustenance. Some children are forced to become one simply when they lose their parents and when their relatives or guardians cannot keep them. Most of such children become victims when their parents send them to Quranic schools outside their hometowns.
A child is usually taken away from his parents, his relatives, and his home to some remote areas for the purpose of learning the recitation of holy Qur’an. At the end of the day the child will learn less If any about the. Qur'an recitation and more mischievous acts. This exercise is prevailing in the northern part of Nigeria as the Hausa/Fulani are predominantly Moslems and settlers of the north.
Social psychologists also noted that when a child is exposed to labour at a tender age and deprived with little or no benefit and entertainment, such child normally develops the habit of loneliness and thus lead to schizophrenia, therefore children’s right must be protected, preserved and maintained, similarly they should be given equal rights and priviledges as adults for a brighter future. The primary or basic children’s needs are right to education, health, entertainment, association, interaction, shelter and nutrition. Once these essential needs are provided, there is no doubt that they can perform wonderfully in their undertakings and can deliver as leaders of tomorrow.
