ONITSHA, ANAMBRA STATE—A computer scientist and former deputy governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chinedu Emeka, has developed a computer software that could be used to track criminals and check their activities in the country.

Emeka, who was deputy governor under Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju’s administration, said he decided to embark on the research and develop the system as criminals were not being punished for offences committed.

Emeka, who just bagged a Phd in computer science from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said if criminals were caught and punished, prospective criminals would have a rethink before venturing into crimes.

He said there was a need for a national data base of criminals, such as the one he developed, that would be easily accessible to security agencies in the country.

He called on government and private institutions to patronize the Ivory Towers when seeking for solutions to challenges such as provision of power supply, computer software, alternative raw materials/ enhancement of existing raw materials and staff training.

Emeka called on politicians to always provide funds for universities to carry out research and development in the universities and advocated that energy should be re-channeled towards recognition of excellence in research and development.

He said government and private sector could encourage this by setting out annual prizes for most useful indigenous scientific discoveries, best made Nigeria computer software and most useful implement designed for farming.

It can't work if the government don't buy into it. What this software does is to have the data of everyone in Nigeria in a database. Then it unifies every thing that you do with the records in the database. It will have the record of where you have and is still working, where and when you asked your credit card, ATM machine etc. Which means that you can't do anything without the database updating your record. I think the cashless economy will really help this innovation.

there has being database softwares all around 4 quite a while now so its not an invention just another made in Nigeria software... It like sayin zinox invented computer... Its good though if government can encourage made in nigeria products.

Are we sure he discovered it or stole it off one young brain like they've always stolen our money? Let him put it into use to catch the political criminals in the range of senators, governors, L.G.A chairmen etc first.

This is not an invention. The Americans have been using the data base stuff for a very long time now. If you watch american Movies, you will know what i am talking about. Nothing bad with introducing the database to nigeria. Note: I support Government encouraging talents but not this one as it is no invention at all.

Wake up guys, the guy invented nothing. He is a pure thief like all politicians. What I guess he did was to build a database and and inference engine that can pick out criminals. This is no invention. It is something that has been in existence in most part of the globe.

There is no computer software that can identify criminals. But you can build a database and an inference engine that will point to likely criminals.

Forget this bloody criminal parading himself as an inventor. If he can catch thieves, let him start from himself and Mbadinuju as governors of Anambra state. The people that forced all primary and secondary schools in Anambra state out of school for one years. Should such men have an honour among us?

Am only interested in seeing this work here whether invented or discovered . If it catches two politcians and 3 [b]pen[/b]tricians, corruption will drop by that number.

This is a welcome development, he should be encouraged.

A database for records of criminals sounds sensible. But a software for tracking sounds vale (are they going to embed micro-chips in them?).

But more importantly, is Dr Emeka having one of those on him

How many of us have develop something as useful as this ? Lets give credit to him, he worked hard for it.

Criminal database invention?

Invent wetin? database?

Not an invention. But it is a good thing for Nigeria. It can be more effective if Nigeria first makes it important that every Nigerian must have his biodata in the Nigerian database right from the day of birth. It should be impossible to benefit anything from Nigeria if your biodata is not in the database.
