Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State yesterday condemned Thursday’s traffic jam in Lagos metropolis caused by security operatives who mounted roadblocks in different areas during the visit of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.

The traffic jam, which lasted several hours, grounded business activities across the metropolis, especially on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Ahmadu Bello Way (both in Victoria Island), Alfred Rewane Road, Awolowo Road (both in Ikoyi), Catholic Mission Street, Igbosere Road and Simpson Street.Thousands of commuters were forced to walk long distances.

Governor Fashola, speaking at a retreat organised for members of the State Executive Council and Body of Permanent Secretaries in Lagos said: “Lagosians were terribly discomfitured yesterday (Thursday) with the traffic jam, needlessly, if I must say. There is the need for public officers generally to be more sensitive to the people we serve.

“It is particularly worrisome because this is not an elected person and I think we all, including the security agencies, must know how they pander to our high officers, especially VIP movement, at the risk and expense of citizens and taxpayers whose money was used to fuel all the vehicles that we used to block the roads against those who pay those money.

“It is an issue that calls for greater sensitivity to the comfort of our citizenry. Yes, I understand the need to protect the VIPs, but it must be done in a way that it doesn’t impoverish.

“It should not get to the level that we shut down the roads in the state because the VIP wants to pass. If they let us know earlier because going through these roads without shutting them down, traffic can be managed. Nigerians respect their leaders elected or not elected and they will very sensibly and gladly yield to them to go and do their business. But I don’t think they deserve to be kept on the roads, standstill for five hours.”

NEVER should a first lady carry so much weight as to block roads for that long! She is not recognised in the constitution! So many issues we need to campaign against.

Lagos shuts down for Tinubu @ 80

On March 30, 2012 · In News 12:22 amEmail0

BY CLIFFORD NDUJIHE, OLASUNKANMI AKONI, BASHIR ADEFAKA & MONSUR OLOWOOPEJO

LAGOS – Lagos was practically shut down yesterday in celebration of National Leader of the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed, on his attaining the age of 60 even as President Goodluck Jonathan congratulated him on leading an “exceptionally eventful and fulfilling life.”

As early as 8 a.m, Lagos residents trooped out in large numbers to Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, to be part of Tinubu’s birthday anniversary.

Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, government parastatals, agencies and major markets were virtually shut down, as most civil servants, prominent Nigerians, traders, well-wishers, friends, professionals and party faithful thronged the stadium.

Among the dignitaries who showered encomiums on the celebrator were President Jonathan, who was represented by Minister for Niger Delta, Mr. Godsday Orubebe, and Presidential Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs, Senator Ben Obi; Vice-President of Ghana, Mr. John Mahama; Senate President, Senator David Mark; governors of the Southwest states, including Babatunde Fashola of Lagos; Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun State; Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti State; Rauf Aregbesola, Osun State; Adams Oshiomhole, Edo State; and Abiola Ajumobi, Oyo State.

Others include the first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande and Senator Chris Ngige.

Jonathan hails Tinubu

President Jonathan, in a three-paragraph personally-signed letter, he wrote on behalf of his family, the government and people of Nigeria, said: “Given the symbolism of the attainment of the landmark age of 60, especially in a life such as yours that has been exceptionally eventful and fulfilling, there is great cause for thanksgiving to Almighty God.

I join your family, and numerous friends and associates in thanking God for your life and praying that He continues to guide, strengthen and prosper you in the many more years of accomplishment ahead of you. Please, accept my warm felicitations and personal regards as you celebrate a very special birthday.”

At the event, Mahama, who was represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff of Ghana, Mr. Alex Zedaphia, described Tinubu as a selfless leader whose quality was worth emulating.
He noted that all through his tenure as governor of Lagos State, Tinubu showed to many that his coming to office was to liberate his people from their challenges.

According to him, “all these qualities you possessed showed that you were ready for Nigerians when you assumed office. I know that one day perhaps, Nigerians will be ready for you.”

He is an icon— Mark

Also, speaking at the ceremony, tagged “Prayers and Tributes for Tinubu at 60”, the Senate President, David Mark, said politicians and well- meaning Nigerians were celebrating Tinubu for providing formidable opposition for democracy to thrive in the country.

Mark, who was represented by the former governor of Yobe State, Alhaji Bukar Ibrahim, said: “We are celebrating him because he is an icon that has performed wonderfully. Sixty years is an amazing time to take stock of who one is.

“You have demonstrated audacity. Your legacy shall be maintained and consolidated. Your role in your party shows the beauty of opposition.”

He is a wonderful husband —Oluremi

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on behalf of the immediate family members, described her husband as a consummate and faithful family man.

She said: “He is a wonderful husband and our relationship makes me to love the Lord more. People will wonder why we are in a stadium for celebration. It is not out of any political intent.

“He is a lover of so many people. We are celebrating the man who over the years touched many lives. Since the time we got married he has touched everyone in different ways.”
As ACN governors took their turns to speak, the host, Governor Fashola, who chose to speak on Tinubu as public servant, said Tinubu’s greatest achievement was perhaps the charting of the developmental course of Lagos.

He recalled his time as Chief of Staff to Tinubu, from 2002 to 2006, saying that the filth which littered the streets of Lagos at that time was cleaned in six months due to the sheer determination of Tinubu who, he said, motivated his cabinet members to share his dream of a Lagos free of filth.

He said: “He was the arrowhead of that paddle of change, a man who keeps reinventing himself. Surely, the last has not been heard from him.”

Aregbesola on Tinubu
Governor Aregbesola of Osun State described the celebrant as an enigma who re-defined Nigeria’s political firmament like a colossus. Aregbesola also recalled his period in Tinubu’s cabinet while he was governor of Lagos State, saying he used the period to mentor people who have today become leaders in their own right.

Aregbesola said: “He is a leader of leaders; in his time as governor of Lagos State, he chose his cabinet on merit. His cabinet in his first term was the most compact and most performing in Nigeria at that time.

Interesting . . . No one complained when the house of assembly devoted a whole day to air their stvpidity to the world via marking Asiwaju ?th birthday celebration . . .

No one complained when the Surulere axis was on total lock down creating an enormous traffic situation that lasted for hours . . . just because Asiwaju was celebrating his ?th birthday celebration . . .

Make we hear word abeg . .was Tinubu recognized under the constitution when he stopped legislative activities to mark his ?th birthday or when he caused pain to tax paying road users while celebrating his ?th birthday

This no be double talk ?

This executive house-boy called Fashola should shut his trap! If he actively supported shutting down Lagos (which is far worse than shutting down a few roads!) for his Master's 70th birthday jamboree, then he has no moral right to condemn the First Lady. When he is ready to stand up to that cocaine-snorting thief called Tinubu, then and only then would we take him seriously. I thought that by now, with the security of having been elected for a second term, he would grow some balls finally.

I will be glad to see a proof of BRF's public condemnation of the city shutdown during last month's celebration of Tinubu@60, else this statement will be judged hypocrisy at it's best.
I lauded BRF for banning the Siren madness in Lasgidi, but it seems like he has some animals as being 'more equal' than others.

I thought that fasola is an intelligent person but if this comment of his is anything to go about then I can boldly say that his association with the jaguda himself tinubu has robbed him of his ability to reason critically before running his mouth.
Does the first lady's visit deserve this comment? Very soon he will come out to contest as president meanwhile he had shot himself in the foot with his unguided utterances. Stoopid politician.

Why don't you ask Fashola the same thing when Tinubu shut down Lagos for his owanmbe?
