Ikwu udo (suicide) is an abomination, so is murder. In both cases, apart from the prescribed saction, the land, that is Ala, Ani or Ana, must be cleansed because human blood is sacred in terms of its support of life. Such blood constitutes pollutants to Ala. Murder and suicide are also regarded as offences against Chukwu. This reason in Igbo culture is that God alone owns life (Chinwendu, Chijindu), gives life, and only God can take life. In murder and suicide, someone is attempting to oust God and thereafter play God's role.

because when the missionaries came what they where preaching from the bible was similar to most igbo laws and i guess thats why it was easy for them to convert igbos
