The Northern intelligentsia and political leaders are now getting excited by the resignation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo

from the post of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) chairman, and are more prepared to regain their groove with him on strategic reasons, Sunday Tribune can report.

Obasanjo, according to fresh findings, has been receiving different delegations from the North, both in Abuja and his Abeokuta home, since the news of his resignation as BoT chairman of the ruling party broke out, all ostensibly congratulating him for taking a “wise decision.”

Meanwhile, the unexplained reason behind Obasanjo’s sudden resignation from the mainstream network of the PDP, according to investigations, was not unconnected with his desire to detach himself from the inner caucus of the party in order to maintain a high measure of neutrality as countdown to 2015 election year, gathers momentum.

The new stance by the former president on politics, as explained, meant that he would no longer be rigidly committed to presidential aspiration of anyone, including that of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

An old associate of the former president told Sunday Tribune in Abuja that Obasanjo had come of age in politics, and for that, had seen the necessity to sit back and review his active participation since 1998, while taking stock of how he had faired in his desire to put Nigeria on the path of greatness.

Obasanjo, the source disclosed, has not been totally happy that those he stuck out his neck for to attain power, including the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and the incumbent president, fully appreciated his efforts, much as they attempted to hold him in abeyance while they enjoyed power.

The North is, however, said to be keen on making Obasanjo maintain neutrality ahead of 2015 in its desire to tackle President Jonathan head long following the early campaign for his second term by his supporters.

According to findings, the North is of a strong belief that it could confidently handle Jonathan alone on the 2015 matters, whereas it may find it a bit difficult to do so in the event that Obasanjo steps in again to mobilise support for him, as he did to make him become acting president, then, a substantive president and finally, an elected president in 2011.

Obasanjo, it was learnt, is not desirous of dipping his hands in the murky politics of 2015 in line with a growing orchestra that the incumbent president should step into the ring for another trial, rather than honouring the initial agreement that he should have just one term in office.

The incumbent president rode on the crest of popular sentiment that the South-South deserved to be offered presidential power in 2011 to balance the power distribution equation in Nigeria, hence, the support he enjoyed from top political stakeholders in the country at the expense of the interest of the North to present the next president then.

When former President Yar’Adua died mid way into the expiration of his term in 2010, the desire by the North to fulfil his full term, in line with the existing zoning of political power, was truncated with agitation that Jonathan be given the chance, thus sparking the greatest controversy on zoning in Nigeria.

Obasanjo’s desire to relinquish the office of BoT of the PDP is said to be more predicated on the emergence of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as national chairman of the party. He fully supported the candidacy of Tukur and that of national secretary of the party, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

Obasanjo, it was explained, believed that the duo of Tukur and Oyinlola have the wherewithal to hold the party effectively and with ability to resolve all contentious issues over 2015.

Indication that Obasanjo is now out to prove his neutrality in national politics could be noted with the manner he has been interacting freely of late with members of other political parties, including the leading opposition party, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), just as his private visit to Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, continues to generate more controversies in political circles in the country.

Investigations have also revealed that that the North has started making subtle moves to form a new political party as a counter force to the PDP towards 2015 in anticipation that supporters of President Jonathan would use the ruling party to promote his tenure elongation, even through constitution amendment.

Some PDP governors have started distancing themselves from the mainstream activities in the party as evident by the manner they reportedly frustrated the meeting called with them by the new leadership of the party last Thursday.

OBJ like Gaddafi will finish the remainder of his life in prison if lucky becos his political significance has been over well before 2007. New kids on the block will deal traitorously with him or IBB, if they dare to resurface 2015. At the end of the day, Nigeria goes on. A word is enough for the wise. sad

Get this into your heads: GEJ will contest and probably win the 2015 election if he does well in his present term. His participation would clearly be on merit and on a level playing field with everyone but make no mistake about this, his participation would not be dependent on the opinion of some Northern, S Western or Eastern Oligarchs or some assumed agreement neither would it be at the whim of any individual. OBJ is now an old man and has served his country to the best of his abilities and therefor deserves his break but this should not be construed as some sort of 'Pontius Pilate washing of hands'. This is beyond any one single individual and he's absolutely free to pitch his tent anywhere he pleases afterall Tinubu did same, e neva tire am?

keep decieving yourself. Obasanjo is still a force to recon with. And who's going to try him? He's not perfect but he's one of the top 3 presidents nigeria ever had. Do you know how much he left in excess crude oil account? Where's the money now? There's more corruption in the system now than in obasanjo's tenure.

@ Bliss4Lyfe. Why do you like deceiving yourself like this?. What is that thrash against South statement you made?. When you people talk with the mouth in your behind calling people parasites taking decisions that will pitched the rest of the nation against the present govt. Making stupid decision such as deploying troops to Lagos and other cities in order to flog Nigerians into shape on subsidy that directly affect our lives, you didn't know then. let me tell you the truth if you can deal with it. The Jonathan government is unpopular. Sorry, did I say unpopular?. I meant to say the government is very unpopular and very very unpopular it is with the majority of Nigerians. Remember many of us are not intoxicated with the "na our son, whatever he does must be rigth syndrome". Our fathers say, when you finish with a woman, you don't throw a punch at her womanliness. They didn't say why, they assumed you should know that you'll still need that her tomorrow when erektion beckons.

This is very funny. Why? OBJ and YARADUA did far more than just deploy troops to peoples cities, tome and villages. They actual murdered people in mass in their own area code. OBJ is not significant and so i won't waste my precious time, as he can do whatever he likes and face the consequence. GEJ Presidency and accomplishment against the odd with boko haram will be clear in a year or two. Then Nigerians will have the choice to either choose progress or regression.

For your information incase you don't know or you pretend not to know. Obj deployed troops to places where criminals in the name of militants took arms against the nation. In the SS he deployed troops to places where armed militants either destroyed oil facilities and installations of killed uniformed men. He deployed troops to the North on a number of occasions when religiously overzealous men took arms against fellow citizens. On a number of occasions military personnel were deployed to SW in the days of OPC. Even Yar a dua deployed troop to Maiduguri and dispatched religious extremists to where they belonged; hell.

You know what?. The problems with some of you SS & SE people, particularly the Ijaws is that you think you owe it a duty to defend Jonathan even if he takes a outrageously stupid decision. That is the dumbest position anyone can take if you ask me.

So that you know I am not a big fan of OBJ, it's just necessary to put things in right perspectives. We thought we've seen the worst of governance in the days of OBJ but we can now see that your stupid son in the person of Jonathan is redefining irresponsibility.

Rest of Nigeria: Somebody help us, our president is going crazy!!!.
Ijaws: He is our son, we know him better, there is nothing wrong with him. He likes walking nude on the street sometimes.

In addition, I think OBJ should be the most dissapointed person in the PDP. Jonathan is doing everything that contradicts the few positive things credited to the OBJ administration. He has watered down the fight against corruption. Look at the subsidy probe. PPPRA paid 998million to 128 different accounts within 24 hours when there were only 32 companies entitled to subsidy reimbursement. I will be the first to admit that Obasanjo's fight against corruption was without a dent as there were more corrupt people left untouched in his days just because they were part of the cabal. That said, I believe that everyone charged with corruption under OBJ was truly corrupt. Tell me what Jonathan has made of the fight against corruption since he became president.
