Wemmy6284: enlighten me No, lecturing is one of the career options. Even sef, just a BSc in mathematics can never guarantee you a top lecturing job at any of the sensible universities in naija. Studying any course as 'a course' can make anyone end up as a lecturer. It all depends on what you want to do. We have engineers, architects, lawyers, accountants, economists and others that are strictly lecturers. If you follow my logic, you will see that no course will mandatorily make you end up as a lecturer, and every course may make you end up as a lecturer. Again, it all depends on what you hope to become in the future. T22. 1 Like |

Wemmy6284: enlighten me The main problem i encountered with Nigeria is that most of the courses we overlook at our universities could actually make you a hotcake when it comes to been recruited internationally. Personally, i think studies in mathematics is one of the best decision anyone can make. Op. let me illustrate by saying. If you go to Pan African University website, and check their head of strategy department, you will find out that the guy studied Electrical Engineering at undergraduate and today has a Phd in Strategic Management. What does that tell you? Undergraduate courses are generic, they really don't determine where you work most times especially if you don't go straight to work with your B.Sc. Secondly, when it comes to mathematics as a career option, there are many things you can do with it. For instance in my field, even though we are usually looked at as a management discipline, i have found that the best guys in the field are maths and industrial engineering grads who spent most of their undergrads working with statistics etc. Maths is so good a course you can continue as a software engineer(common in schools abroad), operations research analyst, supply chain optimization specialists, industrial engineers etc. And many of those outside certificate companies want to recruit top people for can be aced easily by mathematicians. Talk of six sigma or lean specialist etc. So you see, i can go on and on and on on the possibilities that comes with studying maths at school. Just be good at what you do, then the rest is history. 1 Like |

In nigerian universities, are there career advisors or a section of the library dedicated to providing answer on career choices and options or perharps do the lecturers in anyway help students understand what they can do with their courses? there are so many questions like these you wonder if apart from blabbing out hand outs and notes to students, do lecturers actually advise or chat with their students on non academic stuff? 1 Like |
