The second edition of the South-South Economic Summit scheduled for Asaba, Delta State capital, April 26-28 2012,

... promises to be a meeting and melting point of politics and economics – the latter wearing the outer layer of the costume of the event. With the background laid at the first edition hosted by Cross River State at Calabar, the state capital in 2009, indications point to a “progressive move” among the six states that have BRACED up for the event as a landmark initiative towards economic integration and, by extension, political 'amalgamation'.
Organized by the BRACED Commission, an acronym for the six BRACED states that form the South-South region (Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo, Delta), the Summit Spokesman, Mr Chikeh Ogeah, disclosed that this year's edition has “Development, Investment, Security” as its theme, the primary aim being to showcase the rich investment potentials of the South–South region of the country, thereby attracting new investors as well as servicing existing investments.
According to information obtained from the Summit website, this is in line with the mandate of the "South-South Economic Summit Committee", which includes:
• Developing sectoral Road-maps to guide the South-South Governors for the socio-economic development of the region through integration and synergistic benefit
• Advising on a short, medium and long term socio-economic direction for the region
• Highlighting and advising on priority areas and projects;
• Suggesting and advising on implementation of strategies to execute priority projects
• Advising and suggesting the form of institutional arrangements required to support the overall objective
• The Summit will focus on the following key areas of development:
• Infrastructure
• Agriculture and Environment
• Oil and Gas
• Education
• Manpower and Human Capacity
• Security and Tourism
The personalities gracing the summit confirm the political undertone the event sets to accomplish. These include President Goodluck Jonathan, a South-South indigene, who will be declaring the event open. Other personalities include President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Senate President David Mark and Hon Aminu Tambuwal, Speaker of House of Representatives. Others are former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, ex-first Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) John Lipsky and the 17th Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen.

The list of important guests also contain the names of Minister of Finance and Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji; the Managing Director of Chevron, Andrew Fawthrop; Managing Director of Shell, Mutiu Sunmonu; former Chairman of the Joint Tax Board, Mrs Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru; Chairman, African Capital Alliance, Dick Kramer; Executive Chairman, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote; Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka; the National Security Adviser, General Andrew Owoeye Azazi (rtd) among others.

A member of the South-South Economic Summit Committee who responded to a BH telephone enquiry, but would not want her name disclosed, confirmed that “the event will set Delta ablaze for the three days it will hold in Asaba, the state capital.” Asked if the event would provide a platform for consolidated support for President Goodluck Jonathan to run a second term in 2015, the summit Planning Committee member stated, “Of course, politics and economics go hand in hand; every political issue has economic implications, and vice versa. I am sure it will provide a rallying ground for South-South to form a strong economic integration that would give them the backbone to team up politically in the days ahead.” Reminded that the South-South leaders have been accused of political docility, greed and disunity especially their governors, the officer confirmed: “These are parts of the event. As you know, it is about three years now since the last summit was held in 2009, a lot of grounds have been covered and serious groundwork has been done by those assigned to mend the 'broken fences' among the various groups of the region. The success desired was part of the reason the event was shifted from November 2011 to April 2012.”
