CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA
PRESS STATEMENT

The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to reports in the media regarding a suit against the Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, by one Victor E. Dike, who is said to be a professor of Engineering and Technology, National University Sacramento, USA.

It is important to provide some clarifications on the matter. First, as at the time of release of this statement, no court papers in respect of the said suit, had been served on the Governor.

Furthermore, and for the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi did not write the said paper. Governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria, just like Chief Executive Officers of similar institutions in Nigeria and abroad, deliver papers, not in their personal capacities, but on behalf of the institutions for which they are chief spokespersons. In the case of the CBN, such papers, even though presented by the Governor, represent our collective views and are prepared by professional researchers in the relevant departments of the Bank. We can vouch that such papers are prepared in line with strict global and ethical standards.

As a responsible public institution, we always cooperate fully with court officers and our well trained and responsible security officers

Ugochukwu A. Okoroafor
Director, Corporate Communications
Central Bank of Nigeria

as vague as a response can be! Did he or did he not deliver a report not properly cited? yes or no. Enough of masking with his position as CBN governor.

This is a kangaroo defense and it is untenable. The fact that he delivered the paper, without duly acknowledging the original author, makes him liable to the charge of plagiarism. I think he should just admit his error and apologise to the author of the paper.

Agreed he did not write the paper but at least he has the responsibility to vet any paper written by his speech writers so as to cross the 't's and dot the 'i's.

Oh no, what a baseless defence? He was almost better of keep ing his silly mouth shot. Oh, yes the devil me do it? From Obama to Joe Biden, to corporate and professional CEOs, who would think our own CBN governor would shift blame for plagiarism on some faceless junior staff? Where is your accountability Mr. Sanusi? When you were at that ceremony delivaring a message you did not author and which you now claim not to know who authored, you surely enjoyed the big accolade, and complishments you'd recieved from delivaring a stolen academic work? How sick?

If the paper he delivered had led to a groundswell of accolades, like the one he delivered at Benin on the salaries of public officials, would he have passed the responsibility to his researchers?

The condescending way the Corporate Communications people in CBN referred to the Professor in question is also not the best. Did the paper that Sanusi delivered quote the Professor's work or not? Yes or No? If yes, why not demonstrate integrity by tendering an apology to the man and move on? Why try to obfuscate the issues?

I'm sure Sanusi read about it. I know the court will tread with caution because this line of defence (if accepted) can set a bad precedent - I can steal someone's work, receive the accolades for delivering the paper, and claim it was written by my gatekeeper (whenever litigation arises).

I suppose as well, I think he should just apologise and move on if he used his work rather than sue and "counter-sue"

If only this incident had occurred when i was in primary school and my English language teacher had used it to describe what the idiom - clutching at straws - meant, I would have understood sharpish.

This is not a defense at all. Let him try to understand that as a public figure, you vet any public paper you deliver. Even the paper was prepared by your secretary or PA or whosoever, must be vetted by him before delivering such as ignorance is NEVER an excuse in the court of law

The response from CBN clearly shows that we still have a long way to go.
This blaming culture of passing the buck should stop. When are we going to accept being responsible and taking charge of our actions.
If all these are true, SLS should do the decent thing, vacate the posititon pending the court judgement.
Re: CBN Response To Sanusi Plagiarism Allegation by mygsmnairacom(m): 2:43pm On Apr 26, 2012
Well, this issue might not need to go to a law court; CBN should try and settle the Prof. and acknowledge him for the article, if it is truly his.
