JallowBah:

Not gambian dance, but african traditional dance in general. The a*s-shaking, the whine, even the twerk. They do that in the bush, and they did not watch and learn from youtubewink

who learned it from youtube? or am i misinterpreting this?

Must be because Jamaicans been dancing this way since the slave trade hun grin.
We learned from the best: Kongo ppls (Angolan/congolese).

Like I said, I can identify many AA dances and their origins in west africa.
While caribbean and latin american dances are heavily influenced by central africans.

and btw there is no "general" dancing style as each tribe/region have their own moves.

check out this video

^^i see the origin of Dancehall, Merengue, Salsa, Romba, Samba; etc.

I must say that Haitians, Jamaicans and Brazilians are most obvious in their being influenced by their Kongo ancestors.

AAs are more influenced by sahelian cultures.

Kail it's great learning from you the part of Africa the different blacks across the ocean (AAs, Brazilians, Jamaicans) hail mostly from. I see some blacks across involve in some traditional stuffs that blow my mind and have me wondering and thinking "are they not even being too African than we Africans and overdoing things" because some of those stuffs are things I am not interested in. I guess they were merely practising what their ancestors brought along from these african countries you are mentioning as I don't know the cultures of those other countries well.

Absolutely.
there are some things we do in the caribbean that we got from africa, that not even some africans do anymore lol. i am sure there was a tribe somewhere that did headtop...but today you won't see it. Perhaps it could be because of colonialism or just it being viewed as taboo or too raunchy as time went on. SOME dances though, we obviously made up or added to.

again with the congolese, the women tend to make gestures near their private area lol and we do it too.. the difference is while they will make gestures some caribbean/latin women actually touch theirs LOL. so it's very interesting to see the similarities as well as note the differences.

Darkie tell me more about the bolded, what kind of gestures? Do you mean like "swearing by that part of the body" kind of thing. I am hearing this for the first time.

lol. no i mean like, you know how in the congolese video i posted the chicks were making hand gestures around and to their privates tongue. well, in the caribbean we do the same thing.

central african women are the only ones i've seen who do this (including cameroon) so evidently that's where we got it from.

what makes Jamaican dancers different from central african women is our acrobatic styles. cool
