Such a silly question. Next time you fall ill, go and consult a roadside mechanic. It is just such moronic opinions that are egging the LASG on. Let me tell you the next phase: watch as the doctors deploy the "nuclear" option and work becomes grounded in ALL hospitals both state and federal in Lagos; then you will know why doctors earn more all over the world and not just in Nigeria alone.

abegi jare. . .there is nothing you want to tell me about doctors. If working for government is not ok for you,why not move to the private sector ? So people should continue to die because our doctors are poor abi ? Do you presently force your employer to pay you according to what is obtainable around the world ?

The problem is that most of these doctors believe they should be millionaires from working in govt hosp and that's not possible .... Can U imagine house officers in Lagos asking for teaching allowee ...I support Fashola and pray he doesn't back down .. Any doctor that wants to live in VGC should go and open his own hospital and leave LASG hosps alone pls ...Afterall LASG hosp are there to provide welfarist treatment to low income Lagosian ...

I see that a whole load of people here are busy spewing falsehood they probably gleaned from reading the posts of other ignorant beings out there

a) Lagos State does not have to be involved in the National Base wage negotiations. Lagos state is an entity UNDER the Federal government and so is mandated to comply with Federal laws

b) Lagos State already pays over the National set minimum wage.

c) The Doctors are agitating for implementation of other federal standard wage agreements, as contained in the CONMESS agreement,at the state level. This is not about the minimum wage bill.

d) The CONMESS agreement cannot make any one physician rich over night, and probably does not give them more than they deserve really. If anything, having a standardized pay system will go a long way in helping boast Health Care both at Federal and state levels.

As much as I don't support the idea of sacking these doctors over labour and wage issue, I think the doctors have used this blackmail - strike, one too many. It's time someone calls their bluff.

That said, 'repentant' doctors can also re-apply. Those out of job will always be welcome in emerging states like Enugu, Imo, Calabar, Akwa-Ibom. They should head down south - without the strike baggage of course!

It is said that the average Lagos state doctor sees up to 50 patients daily.
I can't help but laugh when I read this. they see the patients alright, but does that mean that this patient were treated? Even I can "See" 100 patients in a day. grin grin grin
Re: Lagos Sacks Striking Doctors by Rhino5dm: 8:50pm On May 07, 2012
Don't mind the fools. Who is more important between teacher and a doctor? What is more annoying is that most of them are just half baked-semi medical professionals, braying like dehydrated goats.

Is it by force to work in LASG? Move to other places paying high or go abroad . . . i pity those thinking they can fight government.

alj harem: This Bayooooooo guy is very clever. very very clever, the way he present his argument would win any biased mind in an instance. Very good.

I was also about to lash out on Fashola until I read his post along side saxywale.

Here is my opinion

1. Lagos state doctors are the highest paid in Nigeria

2. If the government keep yielding to their demands, then what happens to other sectors/workers. should they also be striking all the time

3. If they want to threaten the government to pay more despite they are the highest paid in the country by over 100 % then the government needs to sack some so as to increase the salary of others.

In general Nigerian doctors are not paid high at all because we have too many doctors in Nigeria, but demanding to 200 % or so salary more than other states in Nigeria is crazy and should not be encouraged.

These same ones would pay their unfortunate colleagues who were unable to secure jobs in the civil service 40k per month in their private hospital.

I know things like this can be frustrating, but no point cursing people out, Oga Doctor. pele

BTW, Philosophy is a pretty difficult, pretty important course of study, it can actually help you articulate arguments without getting emotional or cursing people out. pele

My current employer pays me what is comensurate with my level as a consultant on conmess. The LASG signed an agreement with the doctors. It should honor it. Embittered folks like you who wonder why doctors should be paid their due remuneration can go and see a roadside mechanic next time they are ill.

Typical ill thought meaningless grand gestures that excite foolish Nigerians - the LASG has "sacked" its doctors signalling a collapse of its health system and you morons are busy applauding. . .the reason the LASG did that is because they do not care anything for the so-called masses. After all, should Fashola fall ill today, he's jetting off to Europe for treatment where almost certainly the same Nigerian doctors he 's refused to pay will be part of the health team treating him. But since you serially sodomized sycophants are suffering from Stockholm syndrome, you wouldn't understand that.

In any case, it will be interesting to see how you spin it when the LASG climbs down.

Does this mean that if doctors are properly provided for in terms of benefits, they can not protest? We all stayed home for days in january and it got the attention of the govenment. The way forward is to sit with the doctors and discuss and reach a compromisem sacking them is at the extreme. It is their right to protest.
prettyG: Lagos State sacks all striking doctors

Over 1,000 doctors have been let go

The crisis rocking the Lagos State health sector took a dangerous twist on Monday, when the state government sacked over 1,000 doctors in its employ.

Doctors in state-owned hospitals, under the aegis of the Medical Guild, began an indefinite strike on April 24, 2012, to press for the downward review of taxes and the full implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS), and other demands.

Confirming the development, the secretary of the Medical Guild, Idris Durojaiye, said the information was passed across to the doctors through the medical directors of the various state hospitals.

"The medical directors signed the letters," he said.

However, the doctors will be holding a press conference to decide their next line of action.

Last month, the state government announced that it had started recruiting new doctors to help alleviate the plight of residents seeking medical care in state-owned hospitals.

Re: Lagos Sacks Striking Doctors by afrodoc(m): 9:54pm On May 07, 2012
i would like to highlight some points
1)many states pay their doctors more than lagos state doctors and this because these states are already IMPLEMENTING CONMESS.
2)lagos state doctors because of the government's promises of good health care to the electorate and because of the population of the state are some of the most overworked in the country
3)the strike is for the lagos state government to IMPLEMENT d CONMESS and other issues which they have already AGREED to in the past.
to b clear the lagos state government has already agreed to pay CONMESS for some time now but they have refused to fully implement it and have instead used funny means to increase the taxes their doctors pay
the strikes of the last 2 years have been on the same thing IMPLEMEMT CONMESS! whenever d docs go on strike the govt meets with them and agrees to implement CONMESS but the govt never keeps to its word.that is d reason d strikes have been a recurring issue, not because d doctors want increment every year.
now doctors are not slaves and also have families to take care of and last i heard a strike called by a union is legal.the unions(in any profession) are there to prosecute the needs of their members and defend their interests.the guild had to act in the face of the fact that its members were working more than their counterparts in other states and getting less pay.when u factor in the high cost of living in lagos compared to these states u might understand their grievances.
ALL THESE in d backdrop of the government AGREEING to the terms of CONMESS on paper but NOT IMPLEMENTING them.
why should other states pay their doctors on CONMESS but Lagos State (the center of excellence) refuse to?
Re: Lagos Sacks Striking Doctors by OK2NV3: 9:59pm On May 07, 2012
Their services were crap before and most of them spent more time and effort in private hospitals but this ACN is showing their true colors.
ACN potrays itself as socialist leaning but with the way the ACN governors handled the minimum wage issue in their respective state coupled with their aggresive tax policy with less proportionate re-investment shows the party adopting a business approach in running government.

unfortunate that most people coming here to post are very ignorant of the issues on ground.a good example is OK/2/NV whose brain (by his own admission) has been trying (and failing) to boot for sometime now grin
their services were crap? and the services of doctors in other states paying CONMESS were non-crap? these same lagos state doctors a good number of whom leave the country and have good careers outside the country?
ask urselves what made d services crap? d quality of d doctors themselves or the quality of equipment, drugs e.t.c made available by the state government?

If you have ever been to the General Hospital Ikeja.
You will understand that it is the busiest Hospital in Nigeria
The first choice of Hospital is always General Hospital Ikeja and other newly renovated hospitals owned by Lagos.
If you see the crowd that is always there you will appreciate the jobs that the Doctors and Nurses are doing.

Those saying that they will employ new Doctors, I laugh in Greek!
How do you get Consultants who have so many years Experience!
Lagoon Hospital Doctors, that see a handful of patients everyday!

I pity Lagos State Government because the will definitely have to reverse this insensitive act!

Thanks.
