The British Government may soon begin to bar children of corrupt Nigerian politicians from its private schools.

This follows last month’s conviction of a former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, by a London crown court for stealing millions of pounds from the treasury of his state and spending the same to acquire luxury items around the world.

Ibori was convicted and sentenced to 13 years in jail after he pleaded guilty to stealing and laundering over $80m.

In an interview with Cable News Network, the Unit head of the Proceeds of Corruption Unit of London’s Metropolitan Police, Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Benton, gave the hint that some measures would be applied against corrupt Nigerian politicians in the wake of the Ibori conviction.

He said, “We hope that, by tackling the likes of James Ibori, we’re saying to those stealing from the state purse, you can’t have your children at private school in London. You can’t have a multimillion pound house in one of the most affluent areas of London. You can’t drive around in top of the range vehicles. We won’t let you move money around to buy multimillion pound jets.”

The unit, staffed by a dozen or so detectives, traces the flow of foreign politicians’ money through London, and is funded by the UK government’s Department for International Development, which also delivers aid to Africa.

The unit investigated the Ibori case for seven years.

In the special report, CNN writes, ” Ibori employed a range of methods, some straightforward, some devious. He inflated contracts, took kickbacks, and simply transferred cash out of state accounts. He was helped by his family, wife and mistress, as well as by London-based professionals, who set up shell companies, assisted in purchases and provided false due diligence.

“As governor of the oil-rich Delta State in Nigeria, James Ibori’s salary was only $6000 a year, yet he managed to afford luxury properties, fleets of Rolls Royces, a Bentley and a Maybach, first class travel, private boarding school fees and a private jet worth $20 million.”

The report also examined the role played by British banks in aiding Ibori to loot his state’s treasury as well as why Nigerian politicians find London an attractive location for laundered funds.

AMEN O!!! Please, the Nigerian masses need help immediately.

Our leaders are opportunistic capitalists trading with our lives for their selfish interests. They have no single milk of human kindness. They may attend church every Sunday and attend Jumath Prayers on Fridays, but they are far far away from any form of godliness. They have turned our churches and mosques into political campaign arenas.

Nigeria leadership is rotten. The masses have become helpless and hopeless.

I personally welcome Britain and other well-meaning countries to help us from the grip of evil leaders.

Doing that will be the greatest legacy of david cameron government. It will portray them as a government that really cares for the downtrodden, even though they are tories.

Sometimes i see the genuine radicality in cameron. The same radicality that makes him get along very well with Obama more on personal terms than on stiff necked conservative traditions.

Moreso, they should include ban on nigerian thieving elite medical trips to britain. Let them die in the dungeon just like millions of nigerians they condemned to death with the recklessness and thuggery.

@OP

Laudable but I would assume that this can be done after corruption is officially proven. If not there may be thorny legal issues that would make this difficult to implement in reality.

These schools cost 25-30k GBP per year (plus about 10k GBP for room & board) so do the math! grin grin grin grin grin grin

This has to be the biggest joke of the century.
What makes a politician corrupt? Who is a corrupt politician? Will this be done while the immunity clause is still in place?

And at a much more serious level, why the Bleep do BLACK people have to wait for the WHITE man to CLEAN up their mess?

There's nothing good about this news/joke.. it just shows how stupid and bleeped up our system is..

I doubt if this will be possible. Though that will be a good riddance to bad joke, but how is Cameron going to do that? he can only barred a child whose parents have been convicted of corruption. Besides, Cameron UK like any other country is poise for business, i dont see that gut in him, that will however not good for business in UK.

would you view it as justice if the police arrest you because your father stole and they can not get him. i insist that it is very wrong to punish the children for the parents corruption. instead, they can just say the child must prove the his/her sources of finances is not corrupt (and by the way, this should even apply to all).
