Goddex: Copy Copy.
All states now want to do Carnival.
Why not leave Carnival for Calabar and concentrate
on another area of comparative advantage?

Lagos don't need Carnival, if you ask me.

The Yorubas are the masters at copying..

That is Calabar Canival mixed with Rivers State boat regatta

Tourism, Housing, Transportation,Investment-enabling environment, Aesthetics, etc. BRF -BEST RATeD FELLOW.

Errmmmmm wrong ma, When brazilains adopt our culture (Yoruba) we did not complain, what is wrong in adopting theirs as well.

Cultures change very day, that is the way life is

Also we have a significant population of Brazilians in Lagos as Indigenes, thus it is show casting their culture as well.

But the black slaves were the ones who settled in Lagos, meaning they originally got their culture from Africa, Lagos or Yoruba anyone you want to pick from. I am not against borrowing some way of life from others but I just feel if its going to be a cultural stuff in Lagos, it should showcase more of our indigeneous culture. Someone looking at those pictures might think it was done in Brazil or one other caribean countries. I like the pictures showing eyo festival, in short I love it. That is what I would call indigeneous so that someone seeing the picture for the first time knows that it is Nigeria. Lagos to be precise.

I am not only talking about the Lagos carnival, I am talking about the cross river, rivers and all the like that tend to show brazilian carnivals. I hope you get the point I am trying to pass across. Instead of adding more and more carnivals, can't we re-organise the festivals we already have and make them more colourful and attractive instead of coming up with imitations?

Growing up in Delta state, there is this "omaluku" festival that we as kids usually go for, right now it is almost good as dead. That is just an example, those ones could be re-engineered and you would see costumes that will beat all these brazilian/caribean look alike. Anyway, before I am termed an hater, I love the pictures and the idea, but I just want to see something more original and indigeneous. Thank you

The funny thing about you people is that you are just noise makers. You keep making noise when there is nothing on ground in Igbo land. Keep deceiving yourselves screaming Yoruba and Hausa while development eludes your tribe. Tomorrow you would come and show us photos of Owerri which has not moved beyond where Mbakwe left in 1981. Yeye dey smell!

Obviously many people poking on this thread knows next to nothing about the history of Lagos or just want to be damn mischievous...or how can you explain to people that Lagos have a huge population of Brazilian returnees?

Lagos used to do EYO festival.
The costumes and other activities I see
here are a direct photocopy of the Calabar Carnival.
I still urge every Nigerian state to identify an
area it has comparative advantage over others and build on it.

What, it shows you know nothing about Lagos.

Yes we do a lot of festival which Eyo is part of. The brazilain part of Lagos deserve representation as well or don't they ?

Again tell me the significance of this festival in Calabar ?

For Lagos it is representation just like the Igbos and other have theirs

The sad thing is that the entire SOuth-South and South East hold on to very strong traditional values.

Have you seen the Ofala festival in Anambra State?! Have you seen the New yam celebrations?! Everything is in line with our traditions and customs.. You dont need to look out for light skinned beautiful girls and handsome men to know that this is an Igbo festival..

Look at the pictures on this thread... At first I thought someone was showing us pictures from brazil.. There is nothing Yoruba about those pictures..

Not even a single tribal mark on the faces of the participants which proves that they are Igbos or southerners.

Are Yoruba people ashamed of their culture?! Where is their talking drums? Where are the tribal marked men dancing out of tune and jumping up and down like deranged monkeys? Where are the over-weight & haggared-looking Iyabos and Atinukes?! Out their faking oyinbo and speaking in an accent they got from their 1 week trip to the UK.

Not even a single Aso-ebi or Owambe style party with Amala and ewedu or Efo riro.. Rubbish!!

Your line of reasoning is so hilarious grin
Do you know the meaning of carnival at all? Ever before cross river was created as a state, Lagos has bin having carnivals.
Calabar is a beautiful town and I enjoy their carnivals no doubt, but saying some states are doing "copy copy" cheesy is quite unfair and uncivilized a remark. angry

Good Ofala festival! What has your moronic Governor, Peter 'Adaobi' done to develop the festival? Absolutely nothing, yet you are here casting people who are improving the life in their own region. As I said continue deceiving yourselves.

Atleast he didnt import Hausa people to dress up in Brazilian costume and make a fool of themselves.

Some customs are best left as they are supposed to be.. untainted and sacred.

I like the points u made, u are very right with the fact that our culture is eroding away in NIGERIA. What spoilt your honest remark is what I'll consider a 'below d belt punch' to d yorubas in form of well guided insult. That's nullified any sensible thing u ever said.

Have you heard of the Da Silva or the Fernandez family? These are earlier settlers who returned as slaves from the Carribeans to Lagos. There is no denying the influence of the Carribean culture on the descendants of these returnee slaves.
Re: Colourful Pictures Of Lagos Carnival 2012 by Ikengawo: 4:18pm On May 10, 2012
Brazillian Carnival was influenced by west africa and started by west african slaves. It's their interpretation of our masquarades and masquarade festivals that they left behind when they were sent to the New World. Read then speak
