The National Broadcasting Commission described it as Nudity and Pornography and even insulted Ofunneka saying she was molested by Richard, the Tanzanian which is absolutely not true!

I heard the news in my car this morning and I was shocked, it was later announced on AIT. Your Views?

House of Representatives yesterday ordered the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC), to discontinue the airing of any clip or debate on Big Brother Africa (BBA).

The programme, a reality TV show, ended last Sunday with a Nigerian girl, Offuneka Molokwu coming second.
House Committee on Information and National Orientation handed down the order after a meeting with the Director General of NBC, Mr Yomi Bolarinwa. Bolarinwa told the committee that the commission drew the attention of the management of MultiChoice to the nudity being shown on air.

Multichoice is the cable company that beamed the show live to subscribers in Nigeria and other parts of the globe.
He said the commission invited MultiChoice on two occasions when it observed that the company was contravening the laws guiding broadcasting in the country.

Chairman of the committee, Honourable Dino David Melaye, said that even though, the show has ended, the House was against showing the clips of the nudity displayed.

which he noted was not in consonant with African cultures and values.

“We will not tolerate a foreign company to abuse and insult the sensibility of our people. What was showed on the BBA was an insult on the image of Africa . This is why we ordered NBC, who regulate what goes on air to stop hence with any serialization, analysis or clips of the BBA.

“We condemned in totality, what happened on October 27th when a Nigerian was abused in the glare of the public. It is against the code of NBC and we have told the commission to discontinue any broadcast that has to do with BBA, “Dino said.

In view of the recklessness of the broadcasting outfit, he said that the National Assembly would determine the future of Multichoice in Nigeria , adding that it was incumbent on every nation to protect the choice and values of the people.
The live cast of inmates having sex had been condemned by viewers, while the emergence of a married man as the winner of the show equally attracted negative comments

I also read that Namibians have continued to watch the Big Brother Africa television show, despite calls from President Sam Nujoma for the state-owned Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) to take it off the air. (You can read that here)

I don't particularly like Big Brother Africa, but tomorrow the same people may ban a programme I love.
This should not have the power to tell us what we should or should not watch in the whole of Nigeria.
This goes contrary to the concepts of freedom of speech and religious freedom, and should be condemned.

Thank God, Some Sanity. This has been long overdue, I hope the BAN STICKS, that show is nothing but exploitation in the name of ratings. Big Brother America does not show nudity of that sort at all. Infact, the house gets are allowed there privacy when they are doing their personal stuff. Why in the world should Big Brother Africa then exploit these people for practically chicken change?? Have we lost our heads??

They shoud look for something to do cry
It's a bit smarmy of me to criticize them for waiting so long between releases. They didn't do it on purpose, now, did they? kiss
Its off no use now

This might mis-informed but do the NBC hve a right to stop people from viewing BBA which airs on an international station(MNET) ? MNET is a pay per view station and people should be allowed to subscribe to whatever they want abi?

So the fact that the action of these men shields your kids from such scenes and such exploitation completely ELUDES YOU How does watching other people's children stark naked become a good thing for africa People blame the white man for our problems yet, even the white man bans this sort of nonsense from being available on tv where children can see it,  and you believe it should not be so for our own children?

I wonder how many grandparents/parents would enjoy having millions across africa watch their own daughters and granddaughters taking a bath naked on tv?? Better yet, those senators you call hypocrites enjoying the naked body of your sisters and daughters for only 6000 naira a month?? how good would you feel about yourself then??

i dont really like the big brother show cos i just cant sit down with my own life to watch other peoples lives for hours a day. i prefer scripted entertainment. but this meddling of the senate in issues that is better fought by right groups only shows their joblessness. our senate is competing for headline news. they will soon start to summon agbero for collecting 20 naira. what nonsense, the same senators with a boxing record only samuel peters can match are worried about morality. hypocrites.

But skyope, are you sure there not organizations involved here?? I mean I actually think that there may have been some people who called or wrote their senators about this show to get this ban in place. I mean I myself remember searching for the emails of senators so I could register my compaint about the show when I saw the pictures here on nairaland. I seriously think we need to research the origin of this ban to understand how this actually got to the senate but the ban itself I consider a victory for the nigerian people and the sanity of africa as a whole.

Our freedoms are still bound by the law (which BBA clearly broke). If someone feels they have the freedom to break any law (e.g put in a bullet in my head because i disagree with them), I'd appreciate my senators upholding the law. that's what they are elected to do. And enough of the "hypocrisy" card. What leaders in what country are flawless? Let BBA (and our senators) obey the law.

wow! congratulations nigeria, the level of stupidity in our senate have greatly increased. grin grin grin grin grin

i don't care for the show big brother but i honestly think that there are way too many other very important matters to discuss and they shld stop wasting tax payers money.

as for the dude that claim americans bans similar shows, please hold your horses man. they ban shows like that but yet show cartoons with alot of close to nudity characters and lots of cartoons with the wrong msgs to kids. check out most of the movies released this yr that were rated "PG" and tell me if u didnt see or hear enough for u to turn off the tv in front of the kids. they show so much violence; robots that break skulls will be rated "PG", when humans do that, they rate it "R" like violence by robots is different from human violence . in this world, we have deceived ourselves into a deep pit. i don tire, make i go crash.

It just sheer stupidity and hypocrisy our Senators deplayed as usual. If u detest something; dont watch (u cld even break ur dstv). Nigerians with holier than thou attitude. When is this going to stop?

This was what I complained about in the BBA2 thread.
The speaker of the HoReps was involved in an over 600million scandal, how long did it take for them to act
Look at how they handled it. This country really needs help lipsrsealed
Well those compaining about nudity, especially shower hour on BBA2, and are happy with the recent developments(the BAN) should start suggesting methods to the government on how to eradicate guys selling porn DVD at traffic junctions all around the country lipsrsealed

We have issues of power generation and supply, job creation, Niger Delta militancy e.t.c, them leave that one run go NBC
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by Dalby(m): 8:13am On Nov 18, 2007
On the issue of those selling porn DVDs above, I will suggest to those supporting the ban to suggest to the government to arrest those involved, and be executed by firing squad. That was
[list]
[li]You would have totally rid the society of such materials[/li]
[li]You would have reduced the population of Nigeria, which is a problem we are having now[/li]
[li]You would not have solved the problem of unemployment, but reduced the number of unemployed persons[/li]
[li]If you ban the sale, there might be a spike in criminality, but by firing them you would have nipped the problem in the bud[/li]
[li]We would get the names of those that have been executed before execution, and sent to INEC, and those producing the National ID card to stop the processing of their papers that way we can conserve foreign exchange, which will be usefull in other sectors of the economy (Pockets of the politicians)[/li]

I think the senate banning Big Brother Africa in Nigeria is a violation of human rights, but then again it's Nigeria so human rights of the people means nothing to them. People pay for Mnet, its not a Nigerian channel and so if you are offended by nudity then CHANGE the channel or change your cable provider. And who are those senators to say what people can and cannot watch? Are they not the same people that fight arm to arm like a bunch of school kids? Are they not the ones you see going all over the capital with university girls? I think they should focus on issues that actually matter and NOT what people watch on tv.
By the way someone earlier on in this thread said on Big Brother in Europe they don't show nudity. Well that's not true, every year I've been in this country. nudity has been shown on Big Brother in the UK.
All I'm saying is that the people should decide what they want to watch rather than taking the programme off the air completely.
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by Nobody: 9:32am On Nov 18, 2007
While we are in the spirit of banning. Lets not forget mnet, mm1, mm2, hallmark cos they show +18 movies. You dont even need porn dvd. Thats going too far. An average american film has nudity, sex or suggestion of both. So just ban all american films. While we are at it lets not forget music videos and their explicit lyrics. Even If it does no good at least it ensures that the nigerian society can conc on creating corrupted and financial criminals.
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by Nobody: 9:55am On Nov 18, 2007
This is another of Nigeria backwardness, the useless people in the house should look inward before they make themselves the joke of modern world. These are potbelly, perv. who prey on young university students for their kicks. Big brother is a reality show and so be it. A little bit of nudity is not bad for the eyes and i am sure is rated over 18.
I hope we won't wake up one day and this country will be an extension of Saudi Arabia where one man is equal to two women.
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by brushparke(m): 10:25am On Nov 18, 2007
I think it is not just enough to Ban Airing of Big brother Africa but airing of Nigerians should also be banned from participating. It takes everything away from our precious African tradition of respect for the human private body parts.
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by niyyie(m): 11:06am On Nov 18, 2007
The nudity on BBA is too much. I have heard about sex scenes on BBA but have never watched one myself.
Re: NBC Bans Airing Of Big Brother Africa (BBA) In Nigeria! by ayusman16(m): 11:28am On Nov 18, 2007
If the nudity is too much then don't watch. Allow those who enjoy nudity to watch. Nigerians pretend too much in public and do worse in secrecy. It's so annoyin angry

BBA is rated 16NL. So what the hell are these people talking about? After 16 years of age you can handle any nudity thrown at you, and any parent with minors has no excuse not to set the parental filter thingy.

Why do people always talk about 'african values' when those days our maidens used to walk about with bare breasts?
