Nigeria receives Japan’s N2b grant for solar energy

The Nigerian government Wednesday received a grant of N2billion from the government of Japan to support the nation’s drive to boost power generation capacity, through solar energy.

The donation under “The Project for Introduction of Clean Energy by Solar Electricity Generation System”, a statement by the Japanese Embassy, made available in Abuja said, “Japan donated 0.98 billion Japanese Yen (approximately 2 billion Naira or 7.84 million US Dollars) for the provision of solar electricity generation systems and to tackle the issue of climate change on top of 78.76 billion Japanese Yen (approximately 157.52 billion Naira or 63 billion US Dollars) which has already been extended in order to assist the power sector in Nigeria.

“Concerned by the growing effects of global warming and challenge of power supply, which the G8 and African countries consider as the major impediments to sustainable development, wealth creation and the eradication of poverty, the Exchange of Notes of the project was signed by His Excellency Mr. Ryuichi Shoji, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and His Excellency Mr. Darius Ishaku, Honourable Minister of State for Power of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”

“The Grant Agreement under the Exchange of Notes was signed between Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Federal Ministry of Power in Nigeria”

The statement added that, “Under this project, equipment and materials necessary for economic and social development of Nigeria under principles in accordance with relevant laws and regulations of Japan including PV module, Power Conditioner and Transformer will be procured from Japan, while third country products are acceptable for other type of equipments and accessories. In this project, Japan will provide solar electricity generation systems for the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University in Katsina state.

“The people and the Government of Japan hope that this project will enable an increase of the ratio of clean energy in the energy portfolio in order to reduce the use of fossil fuel which is considered as the main cause of today’s global warning. The Government of Japan is confident that this project from the people of Japan will be a good showcase of Japan- Nigeria cooperation in the field of clean energy”

“Regarding the Power Sector, the Federal Ministry of Power will chair the Consultative Committee in order to facilitate consultation and procurement process. The first meeting of the Committee shall be held after the signing of the consulting services agreement between the Agent and the Consultant

I only hope the money will be used judiciously and for the purpose for which it is intended. We have a serious power problem and this is an opportunity to address this issue, Can we really go solar if all efforts to provide electricity have so far not yielded the desired result?
