Meaning: "Your unrelenting persistence in gluing your posterior to the recumbent furniture is an act of contrite reflected affection for our apparent non-participation in effective or abrupt reconciliation of the matter that initiated your positioning in this voluntary excruciating posture, the gesture being well appreciated and honored is by no means underrated but intimately accepted, as you ponder and postulate your participation and contribution in your present disposition."

English people don't have seat greeting, therefore there is no english way of greeting someone who has been sitting/waiting for long time. Eku ijoko is eku ijoko.

P.S: don't bother sending 500 card, i will manage 400 grin

Excelboi: Primarily EKU means WELLDONE and JOKO means SIT. But it can mean two things when used as a sentence cos yourba language has diversified meaning. For example; EKU IJOKO may mean = Hope you re well sitted and the response will be ESE, adupe. (yes, thank you). And the other meaning can be hope you re comfortable.

But, all in all, if you want to use it as a greeting, just say; Hope you re well sitted!!! .....

EKU-IJOKO literary means WELL-DONE FOR YOUR PATIENCE WHILE STILL SEATED.

EKU here works as an adjective qualifying a Noun(IJOKO).
As in EKU-ISE which means WELL-DONE FOR WORKING SO HARD.

@sholay its good to appreciate it anyway and be proud of it or else who will defend it when other trabalist start talking crap. If you dont love your culture how can another man love it. I know atimes it looks like cultural leaders are going wrong when they be giving chief title to crimminals but its an individual thing. Btwn who tell u say na sermon I dey talk. This is not sermon matter, when u enter church tomorrow u go hear sermon. But this is real talk. if our people dont love them self we cant advance. n pls i no b pastor o lol

Re: Jamb Question - What Is "Eku Ijoko" In English ? (winner Gets Recharge Card) by Dandy1(m): 6:16pm On May 19, 2012
logica: It does have a literal English translation - "greetings" or "compliments".

So "E ku ijoko" literally translates to "greetings as you are seated".

@logica,thanks man for writing d right word. As for all of u using ''sit'' as a passive verb e.g. Hope u are well ''sitted''? There's nothing like ''sitted'' in english language,we only have ''seated''. @poster,u are very funny.U already knew there can't be a perfect way of translating directly. It is fun though.Lol

Re: Jamb Question - What Is "Eku Ijoko" In English ? (winner Gets Recharge Card) by sholasys: 6:40pm On May 19, 2012
The meaning of EKU IJOKO can be define only when you know the usage(how to use it).
EKU - here is in plural and or addressing someone older. Now EKUIJOKO is either greeting some set of people siting or someone older siting.
I will go with WELL SITED first then WELLDONE
Re: Jamb Question - What Is "Eku Ijoko" In English ? (winner Gets Recharge Card) by Nobody: 6:46pm On May 19, 2012
Yoruba culture is one that gives great emphasis to greeting, probably more than any other culture. So, many things that don't have special greetings in many cultures have in Yorubaland Simply 'eku everything'. Eku subsidy sef lol.

An Englishman will tell you Hello or Hi for most of these greetings, probably including what a Yorubaman will say 'eku ijoko' for.

It's not only 'eku Ijoko' that does not have a literal English translation. How about technology words like: 'Internet' 'download' 'virus', 'anti-virus' 'radiation'? I thought the computer was known as 'ero ayarabiasa' until the internet came. . . If we don't want our mothertongue to end up like Latin, we have to get serious about creating new words to match up with the future.
