Are you sure Egusi is Yoruba? I thought it was Igbo because Igbo people have distinct way of making it, with bitter leaf. Do Yoruba use bitter leaf?

Okro (okwuru), okazi, ogbolo, and olugbu soups all originated from Igboland. While the Igbo and Yoruba both consume their own versions of Egusi soup.

Fufu is really a West African thing in general, almost every ethnic group in West Africa eats it.

That said, we Nigerians borrowed something from the Senegambians, it may have been brought here by us Fula people. Jollof Rice originated from Senegambia.

Everybody's going to make claims. But is there any definitive proof?

That's the question. Our cultures are so mixed. Failure to realize this will lead us to endless arguments.

There are about 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria, I personally think it smacks of arrogance to say a particular tribe owns soups that cut across ethnicities like Ogbono, Okro, Egusi. Some of these groups have their own distinct names for the soups but use the more popular names (some of the distinct names will die off for lack of use in a few generations if they haven't died in some groups already).

I think okra(okwuru in Igbo),ogbono (the seed that makes the soup draw) originated from Igboland because we even have some ancient adage about them; As for egusi nobody can lay claim on it cos most southern group make it but everybody has their own way of making it. I think the Igbos make good egusi soup and calabars too.

Have you actually seen it with your eyes or you just saw it in a picture? 95% of the Igbos i know while living in lagos never touched yoruba egusi nor their okro and this is not because they cant cook but most prefer the Igbo kind.

Okro, Ogbono and Egusi soup are Igbo soups though Yoruba people are also Laying claim to Egusi soup which i find strange because Egusi has alway been known as an Igbo food.

Egusi is Yoruba. It is called Egunsi, Egusi, Elegusi. Ogbono = Apon in Yoruba. Okro= Ila (Okra/Okro is the English name). We also have bitterleaf which grows all over the SW its called Effirin. We own these things. Your soups are Ofe nsala and two others most people have never seen or heard of except on NL. The most popular Igbo food is the goat head peppersoup. Igbo's in Lagos copied and redid our food. No one can cook Egusi or Apon like Yoruba's. That receipe is tha bomb. If a Yoruba woman cooks for you, walahi, you go forget your name. That is why all the buka sellers only sell mostly Yoruba food. Our food is so delicious and highly sought after. grin. Until you have tried Efo elemi meje, you have not survived or lived. tongue

No tribe can lay claim to none of the soups except white (which I've never heard of) because they all cook them differently, and call them different names...

Even Edi kai ikang is just a name - but it's also just another vegetable soup... undecided

they never tasted yoruba's version, how would they know it's much more delicious? I paraphrase this yoruba adage,: You'll be obsessed that your father has the biggest farm untill you see another person's father's farm. Go figure!
