Mein Kpalasa. The phone served me faithfully for six years before dying abruptly last year. I was in grieved shock for days because I had developed a sentimental attachment to it. It was like a friend to me, and years back, when I asked my friend in this picture to hold up the phone so that I could snap it, he was like "Ishi, you need deliverance". During my university days, when my course mates displayed their snazzy phones on top of their desks during lecture, I would proudly display MK in the midst of Nokia Ers, Samsungs, Motorolas etc. Of course it would be the odd one out among a multitude of teck phones but I didn't care. I loved MK too much to give a rat's asss about what anyone thought of it. Mein Kpalasa proved very valuable to me in Wasimi and I am happy that it has gone to a better place.

Ishilove: . . . 'ngwongwo nigwongwo' (bric a brac) . . . . Is that expression related to the delicacy ngwam ngwam (sp?) ? Whenever the later is mentioned or comes up, I'm usually reminded of an extremely funny passage in Soyinka's Trial of Brother Jero/Jero's Metamorphosis. |

Iya Sumaila,The local fish trader doing what she knows best. Please pardon her state of UnCloth, the mama has an aversion to clothes. She claimed the blasted Ondo heat is the cause. The only time she ever wore a blouse was when she was leaving Wasimi on business or when she was heading to church. When my neighbour's thieving, four-legged terrorist of a nanny goat had made off with my expensive 'Eja Hawusa', my neighbour had crossed the expressway to buy Iya Sumaila's 'Eja shawa'. Please note that Shawa is a soft, oily and tasteless fish which cannot be compared to 'Eja Hawusa'. The sad thing is I was never able to get even with the goat before my service year was over.

Efemena_xy: ^^ Love that drama piece. T'is been donkey years since I read that book. Ah sorry, seeing this a little late. In the book, this Nigerian musician/trumpeter had an understanding white missionary teacher. He was accommodating to the Naija ajasa flourishes that the student was adding to pieces he was practising which were not in the written music. One day, the understanding oyinbo was away and another oyinbo was teaching this my broda. The new oyinbo was a straight laced type and could not tolerate the extra ajasa notes. Now in addition to the main joke in the passage, there were little little ones as well. But as far as I can remember and relate here: Oyinbo man complains about the extra notes; my brother said but the other oyinbo no dey complain; new oyinbo say he no want know. My broda told him that but na those extras dey make the music sweet. Oyinbo man said: "But I don't quite see the relevance." My broda reply one time: "make you no try for see am, make you try for hear am!" Oyinbo man say him nor gree. My broda come try take our way and condiments to explain again: he blow the trumpet one kind: he say that one na iru (yoruba condiment); he blow another one, he say that one na {something like gbegiri -- I can't remember all the actual condiments precisely now). Oyinbo man vex, he say hin nor wan know; na him my broda come kuku veeeeex. He blow one condiment sound for trumpet; he say that one na [oporoko], blow another one, he say dat one na [edikaikong]. He come tell oyinbo man say 'if you still dey there when I add the ngwam ngwam now, I go blow ya head comot!! Oyinbo man pick race. 1 Like |

^^ Lol! But that's not in Wole Soyinka's book, The Trials of Brother Jero! Or is it?? |
Re: "The Place Of Rest" -Wasimi Chronicles by Enigma(m): 10:32pm On Feb 10, 2013 |
My version of the book has both The Trials of Brother Jero and Jero's Metamorphosis together, so it could have been in the latter. |
Re: "The Place Of Rest" -Wasimi Chronicles by EfemenaXY: 10:36pm On Feb 10, 2013 |
Ah! Not read the latter before... |

My main man, Africa's one and only, Iron Man with tribal marks. Akeem 'Akeembo' Aremu. This dude is one of the folks I miss the most. The first time I set my eyes on him, he was clad in a deep brown shirt, smart jean trousers ,his feet shod in faded yellow jungle boots. He pumped my outstretched hands like an automaton, said "pleazed to meet you" and vanished from my sight on a mission to save the world. Or prepare lesson notes, I forget now. It was from his lips I first learnt the word "bush conflagration". My niggi is short, well built, very dark in complexion and tribal marked. He was always the butt of jokes from the other guys because of his height and state of origin-Kwara state. The guys said his state is the most backward state in the whole federation. But what Akeembo lacks in height, he more than makes up in bad mouth. When teased mercilessly, he would stand his ground, all 5ft 3inches of him and take all the guys to the cleaners. According to him, JP from Plateau was a lost nomadic soul, Ubaneezy from Imo state was an igbo 419, Nedu from Abia was Uba's brother in crime, AZ from Kogi hailed from a state that had nothing meaningful to contribute to the country, while Ishilove from the south-south belonged to a tribe of lazy folks who did nothing but scream "our share of oil wealth!" to anyone who cared to listen to our whining. I really miss this guy.

Akeem, doing what he knows best. He taught accounts and maths. The kids loved him, for some very strange reason.
