Types of Birds

The birds that we know as domestic poultry desended from Red Jungle Fowl
Gallus gallus. The Birds is also known as gallus bankiva. Whiuch is still
found in India, Bahamas and Java.

In this part of the world, there are Pullets, Broilers and cockerels

The Broilers are purely for meat production. They are liking for this
purpose because of their early maturity. Broilers may be slaughtered at any
time between 30 and 60 days of age. Broilers may come in white, brown or
other colours. The most common ones are white feathered broilers with
breeds like Ross and Arbor acres



Birds of egg Production is Called Pullet. The females are smaller than the
males and are more refined or feminine looking. The egg producing chickens
have been genetically selected to lay as much eggs as possible. It can be
brown, black or white in colour. It takes between 17-18 weeks before pullet
will start laying egg. The pullet are so important because it as high
nutritional value. Milk and meat have lower nutritional value. Egg is the
only animal food with no religion moral taboo.



The Cockerels are males or roosters which are primarily for meat
production. The combs and watties in males are larger than those on females
and the head are more angular and masculine looking. They can either be
black cockerels, white and spotted black colours or white cockerels. Some
white cockerels have brownish or reddish colours.

*BROODING OF DAY OLD CHICKS*



Many contemporary farmers, brooding of birds from day old chicks is very
difficult for them which is not suppose to be so.

Brooding of chicks is better than buying already brooded birds. It is a
fact that if you brood your birds, you will follow the vaccination and
medication timetable. Also, you will have both the full life and medication
history of your flock. It will equally help you to source your chicks from
the best hatcheries.



There is no magic about brooding chicks. In fact, it is rewarding and
interesting taking care of them. The question people ask is: “can I do it”
yes! Anyone can do it, there is no magic about it and it does not need
degree certificate. It is all about following the way it is done
successfully. In this chapter, our concern is to be successfully on how to
brood chicks.

Brooding is the term used on how to take care of chicks from day old of age
till 6 (six) weeks. It is the sum total of all the process involved in
bringing birds to maturity. Getting day old chicks off to a good start is

of the birds to the farm.

This is what you input into the early life of the chicks that determines
the level of success and profitability. Young birds require perfect and
environment temperature to fell comfortable. Only then are they able to

Wash the house with disinfectant chemical

Check everything is in good working order

Warm up the house in good time. In the dry season, start heating 24 hours
and in the raining season at least 16 hours before chicks arrive

Spread sawdust round the floor

The water should have room temperature by the time chicks arrive. Vitamin C
and glucose should be given in the water to give energy to the birds. Drugs
should not be added to encourage drinking

Unload all chicks boxes and distribute them in the house

Quickly place the chicks near feeders and drinkers

After placing the chicks, check the working order of equipment and
temperature. The pace must be very warm. Take not: if the place is warm the
chicks will be moving round but if the place is not warm the chicks will
all stay in one place.

After a few hours, check whether the chicks have settle down well. The
chicks behavior is the best indicator of their well being. If the heat is
too much the chicks will raise it peak (mouth) up, and you will reduce the
