The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Port Harcourt International Airport Command, yesterday arrested a 54-year-old widow and mother of six, Mrs Onatemi Sekinatu for being in possession of 839 grams of substance, suspected to be cocaine.

The street value of the drug was put at N10 million. The suspect was arrested while attempting to board a Lufthansa Airline to London via Frankfurt. The suspect, who was arrested on the suspicion that she ingested drugs, was said to have been taken to the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt, where the X-ray scanner revealed that she ingested hard drugs.

After she was placed under close watch, Mrs Sekinatu ‘delivered’ 58 wraps of cocaine, weighing 839 grams. Sekinatu, who disclosed that her husband died in 1999, refused to talk to journalists when they probed to know how she came about the drugs she allegedly ingested.

But investigation revealed that one of her friends she met at a party in Lagos introduced her to drugs trafficking. At the party, the suspect was said to have narrated her financial predicament. She said her friend decided to link her up with someone that could help her traffic drugs .

It was also gathered that they later agreed to meet at a popular eatery in Orile area of Lagos, where they introduced all those in connection with the drug business. It was also at the Orile meeting that the suspect and others were given parcels of drugs to be ingested and travel documents.

Giving insight into the arrest, the commander of the NDLEA, Port Harcourt International Airport, Mr Olutekunbi Davis, said it was made possible by the diligence of the anti narcotic officers. On why the suspect was taken to the Military Hospital to ascertain if she ingested hard drugs, the commander said it was because of the renovation work going on at the airport.

According to him, the state of repairs made NDLEA to pull out the scanning machine because of its sensitive nature. He said despite the renovation work, NDLEA officials were up to the task, but appealed for urgent completion of the work.

Fielding questions from journalists, Davis said the Chairman and Chief Executive of the agency, Ahmadu Giade, had zero tolerance for corruption. He said: “The current Chairman has zero tolerance for corruption. No officer would dare involve in sharp practices.

There may be temptation to do so, but when you remember the kind of boss you are working with, you can’t compromise, if you do that, you are on your way out.”
