@jenams: such naivety. He was elected to make decisions on the people's behalf. This decision is not on our behalf. It does not even bring honor to M.K.O Abiola. How about standing for democracy as Abiola did rather than sending policemen and soldiers to disrupt our protests? All he is doing amounts to mocking Abiola and democracy.

ayox2003: You cant just make decisions and expect people who elected you to swallow it all up!
Do you think Lagos is a dumping ground. Even Fashola retraced his steps with the Doctors.
GEJ is a slow learner. After trying the subsidy removal thingy and Lagosians protested, he thought they would accept immortalising MKO by renaming UNILAG.

He's just insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

Read this:

Do I need to make any more comment?

Thanks o my brother...we nigerians are just too selfish to recognise manupilation,he just keeps testing us,with one tyrant policy/change after another.I really expect the protest to be about the Govt for the people and by the people...etc, not Govt for the Govt,by the Govt...etc.
Everybody here talking about ''useless students'' protesting the indiscriminate renaming, are opposing and condemning the protest because it doesn't concern/affect them.and that is our problem ''if e no concern me,e no concern me'',''so long as my garri and sugar dey, wetin concern me with those wey dey complain say dem no allow dem plant rice'', you are forgetting that one day your ''garri go finish'',but by then rice no go dey.

Lets be carefull, for chess players you'll understand, that sometimes your opponent keeps you busy trying to escape a small maneouvre, while he's sneaking up on your queen. This whole thing could be a test of nigerian students' (youths) strength,or a diversion to all nigerians from the real problems or a sacrifice offered to some political gods, an ''don't you know am in charge'' move, or an ''i pinched you, what can you do'' move.

Lastly, peaceful protests are rights that can be exercised whenever we want,in a democracy govt, unless you say this is military, then tell us,instead of gassing us.

Ask some of these people saying the protest is worthless how will they feel if after 40years of age with wife(husband) and kids
their dad wake up one morning and change there name from whatever it was before to something else. Help me ask them how will they
feel. Because it is so easy to throw stone at people fighting for their right or fighting for justice.

Unilag is recognised far and wide, and we all knows that a good name is better than silver and gold!!
If only the name 'Unilag' was to be valued, I'm sure it will be worth much more than 20billion Naira.
So, now I guess they will have to start from scratch again(home and abroad). Building something that has
already being built.

If that name MAULAG should remain, I assure you, its certificate will be worth much less than the least Federal university in Naija toay!!!!

Seun, they were issued notice to vacate the school campus. Disobeying the laws of the land is uncool

I tried getting admission into UNILAG once but i was denied and not because i didnt surpass the cut-off mark and no post jamb then all na politics n runs (Not bothered), M.Sc on course there. that said
What makes you think during the riot as a student you lose your life, they will name a toilet bowl after you in MAULAG?
While the protest goes on you stall your education GEJ is not gonna get delayed or get extra year?
You have bad structures and facilities that need to be changed students aint protesting that?
why dont the students petition NANS or Sue FG or better still go to Abuja and protest?
School properties damaged will be paid by the students?
After the protest and your school name is changed back, what will the school do if FG cuts funding to the school, what would the VC,students, or Alumni do? (OBJ cut funding to Lagos State government at one time under Tinubu)
I am not in support of either parties but I believe we should always consider more important issues and better ways to iron out disputes not all this wasteful protest. e.g The waste system in the school is not functioning all is dumped in the lagoon nothing done or said, touts would use your school's name to rob and do other notorious activities and u would hear omo lag ni mi.
GEJ and most of this top officers dont have Kids in these schools and when they are done, they come back and hold key positions in government.

Alumni meeting on the 3rd of June to discuss the change of name issue, rather than protest let them discuss and seek avenues to resolve the change of name thing.
Please act responsibly any life lost is a life wasted and wont not be termed for a just cause.
Thank you

@leomax: "An unjust law is no law". Why ask them to vacate the skool? To create disunity amongst the protesters. We shall display civil disobedience till Jonathan stops being a liar claiming to love democracy yet scoffing it.

Now that we are peaceful, nobody is listening. If we become violent, the failed leaders will start asking for dialogue. When will Africa wake up and do things right?

Is that the point? The issue is the government should respond positively to this issue instead of acting like dictators. If issues get out of hand, they'll start allocating unnecessary security budgets that will end up in their pockets. And whether we are legion or one, it does not matter. If civil disobedience fails and violence creeps in, what will be will be, Neither scared of torture nor death. I will stand for what I think is right.

I use to think unilag students are generally matured and more responsible compare to students of other higher institutions until now. For crying out loud they were told to vacate the school for two weeks while this issue is being looked into. Eventhough i do not support the manner in which the change of name thing was done, i think the students' reaction is not helping too because two wrongs do not make a right. Any student that sustain injury or lose his or her life as a result of a change of name is not wise.

Imagine Hp, coca cola, first bank, changing their names, most pple refers all toothpaste as maClean which is wrong that is d power of name. Unilag is a branded name known all over the world, the name help us in nigeria and abroad, one man cant just wake and change just like that, we want restructuring not renaming. To worsen the situation the police are attacking the peaceful protest of the student turning it to violence, is this democracy where people cannot have a say then i will prefer communism. GREATEST AKOKITE we still remain the school of first choice and the nations pride. Haters should go to hell

The University is meant to be a place of character formation but these days, we have touts and clowns parade themselves as University students; else, what will get a serious and focus minded person into blocking 3rd mainland bridge not to talk of staying back on the campus after being ordered to vacate. It is like staying beyond a curfew period for a "justifiable" reason - There can never be a good reason for doing the wrong thing. If changing the name has any negative effect, IT IS OBVIOUSLY not for the current "students" to fight. The Alumni association, the governing council, the senate,NANS, ASSU,etc should have been the ones engaging the government while the "students" face their studies, watch the drama and learn as it plays out. In summary, those peope in the hostels are NOT students. A well worded petition and intellectual engagement would have painted a better image for them and possibly achieve a better result than what they are currently doing.

We have petitioned and we are peacefully protesting. Do your research. It's easy calling people touts when you're not in their shoes. I for one chose UNILAG partly because of its name and prestige. UNILAG is my harvard, my oxford, my cambridge put together. Okay, I don't particularly like everything or everyone there but its the UNIVERSITY I AM PROUD OF. I could have chosen any other school, public and private. Yet I chose UNILAG. How can one man just decide to change it without consultation with stakeholders and due process. It is a scoff at democracy.

Jonathan should not destroy the identity by which UNILAG has become what it is. The same identity that makes it attractive as an honor to Abiola. Are people so blind and ignorant?
