Presidential Spokesman Reuben Abati’s Tweet Over Air Crash Stirs Anger

President Goodluck Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Reuben Abati, on Monday drew widespread anger on social media with his tweet on the visit of his boss to the scene of Sunday’s crash of Dana Air flight 922.
The presidential spokesman joined Twitter on Monday and chalked up 2004 followers within four hours.
He is, however, following only one account.
Abati, whose Twitter handle is @abati1990, posted three tweets on Monday, saying his boss was visiting the site of the crash, which left over 150 people dead and properties destroyed in Iju Ishaga, Lagos.

Around noon, Abati tweeted, “President Jonathan is on the way to Lagos for an on the spot assessment of y(ester)day’s plane crash.”
Two hours later, he tweeted, “President Jonathan now in Lagos. Mourning. Sad.”

The tweet that got social media abuzz was delivered thus, “A President that cares. Going to the site of plane crash in Lagos.”
His name swiftly became a trending topic on Twitter, with various comments blasting him.

One commentator @dolapot wrote, “People have just died yet Reuben Abati is busy scoring cheap political goals on Twitter!”

Another blogger, @diekogilbert, wrote, “How Reuben Abati can turn Jonathan ‘s visit to the crash site into an event, still beats my thoughts.”

Yet another blogger, @canary, wrote, “GEJ please read: Government should not wait for a plane crash to be responsive. Reuben Abati 2005.”

The commentator then attached an article written by Abati on Monday, November 14, 2005 titled, “The millionaire gods Of Lisa.”

However, a blogger, @franchl, thought differently, saying, “Really what’s the correlation between what #Reuben Abati said in 2005 with what he said on twitter today?”
