Win, and they go top of the group, and even stretch their lead to as much as three points. Lose, and they could fall to third in the group.

It is that close. That extreme.

Which perhaps explains why Flames coach Kinnah Phiri may be trying to unsettle the Super Eagles with tough talk.

Immediately after drawing 0-0 against Kenya on Matchday one last weekend, Phiri declared that the Super Eagles hold no fear for him, describing the Nigerian team as a spent force living on past glory.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has chosen not to respond in kind, instead charging his wards to do their talking on the pitch.

And talk they will have to, with their feet. And hardwork. And goals.

Malawi have been boosted by the return of key players who missed the Kenya draw.

Defender and team captain Peter Mponda leads the strong cast of heavyweight returnees which include Harry Nyirenda, Robert Ng'ambi and Chiukepo Msowoya.

Keshi has most of his squad available to him, with just Nnamdi Oduamadi dropping out to injury.

But the team suffered a travel setback when their planned departure on Thursday night was cancelled.

The former skipper will be hoping the setback does not demoralise his team, as it did his predecessor's prior to a critical game against Ethiopia last year.

Nigeria's road record in recent years has been anything but impressive, and Keshi will need to arrest the rot.

One thing is for certain. The Super Eagles cannot lose. Not if they hope to navigate these qualifying series without pressure.

Then again, the Super Eagles and pressure are Siamese twins, almost inseparable.
