Leaders of two leading opposition parties; Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), have met and expressed their determination to work out a merger ahead of the 2015 presidential election.

ACN’s national leader, Bola Tinubu on Thursday met with the leader of the CPC, Muhammadu Buhari, at his residence in Kaduna for a meeting which was held behind closed doors

In his address to journalists after the meeting, Mr. Tinubu stated that the meeting centred on how to work out an acceptable leadership to steer the affairs of the country.

Hinting on the willingness to reach a compromise for the merger talks ahead of the next presidential election, Mr Tinubu stated that “if we have security agencies that are charged with the protection of the sovereignty of the country at the expense of their own lives, then the leaders must be able to make sacrifices and be flexible enough to help redirect.”

Mr Tinubu also expressed the determination of the two parties to resist being perpetual opposition, saying “we are working for a positive change in 2015. We don’t want to perpetually be in opposition, every politician wants the opportunity to govern,” he said as he explained that both parties were working for a change in the nation’s political history in 2015 that will lead to the formation of a government led by progressive minds.

He declined to give further details of their discussions saying “as politicians we discussed in general the situation in the country and how we can help ameliorate the problems facing the nation.”

Accompanying the former governor of Lagos state on the trip to Kaduna were the governors of Ogun and Ekiti states. Former Minister of the FCT, Nasir El-rufai represented the CPC.

Both parties were involved in a possible merger talks, weeks to the April 2011 presidential election, but the talks collapsed days to the final round of campaigns, owing to irreconcilable differences. The party’s presidential candidates both came second and third respectively in the poll that was adjudged free and fair.

But are you happy with the way things are going in Nigeria at the moment? Can GEJ really tackle Nigerias problems when it looks like no one respects him, so they do whatever they like. I want an honest answer from you. Thanks

The political reality has finally hit Buhari:u av to deal wt all kinds if u want to wrestle power.Left alone,in a free/fair contest,I bet Buhari won't want anything 2do wt Tinubu,a man wt a confirmed inglorious past& present. But wen u ar persistently faced wt a rigging machine, both at d polls& judiciary,u av 2 seek d alliance of one who has also perfected d art of rigging in both sectors, albeit,in a section of d country.Tinubu's machinery, evn 4 pple who hate him 4who he is,his past, present& his methods, are 2 formidable in d west 2 b ignored. If d alliance does sail thru,d party dat emerges, will sweep d polls in d West by fair or foul means.D question now is,can Buhari do d same in sizable parts of d north& den gamble wt d east& SS not being massively rigged by d PDP?Evn @dat,nigerians desirous of a change in d power guard& a new, just,corruption- free, culprits being brought to book society, will av to live wt d fact dat compromises in d areas of positions& prosecuting corrupt offenders, will av 2 b made 4 d likes of Tinubu, his loyalists& dose clearly known to b corrupt& against all what Buhari stands for.Its a perplexing choice, but probably d only way an alliance can b forged& power possibly wrestled frm d PDP

Lenny5000:

Nobody is perfect so you have to deal with the lesser evil. Tinubu was governor of Lagos when Lucky was governor of Edo do you want to compare the two?

My guy, you really should investigate who you are speaking to, ala check previous post, to note the motivation of some that will reveal you are wasting your time entertaining their vacuous bellicosity against Tinubu. Silly bigots will shout "Tinubu" all over the place without knowing they are only revealing the extent of their stupidity and bigotry the entire world. Ask them to show us those from their region who are not "thieves" and are delivering progressively for Nigeria.

A Ghanaian, for example, may wonder the inobjective hatred towards Tinubu when, if he is the standard of "thieving", then Nigeria clearly needs more "thieves" like Tinubu. Lagos is the most improved State in Nigeria even despite empty noise about "Tinubu stealing Lagos blind". When we see States actually being stolen blind that are mired in misrule and retrogression , with no benefit accruing to the people, one will know this beyond question e.g Mr. President's own State, Orji Kalu's State and Edo State in the past under the PDP !!!!

Today, Edo has a performing Governor courtesy of Tinubus effort. The PDP is now vanquished from the SW because of Tinubu . Oando, connected with the Tinubu family, is currently adjudged the best Nigerian company, indicating intellectual talent and business acumen, yet majority of Nigerian Politicians only know how to steal blindly from the Government. The man is villified yet it is progressives and performers he supports everywhere while GEJ, OBJ, Anenih et al are only ever concerned with the imposition of 'destroyers' who will help them steal and consolidate power. What is GEJ's legacy if not, like OBJ in the SW, one of criminals being empowered by the Presidency to take over political power across the ND?

The bigots and noisemakers should tell us what obtains in their region. What did Orji Kalu do as Governor and what has he done for his State and region after Governance? Where are the progressive Politicians he has supported to power?

IBB, Atiku, Ciroma and co NKO?

OBJ Nko? Why he is so hated in the SW and even his own Ogun State yet Tinubu can walk around revered?

Shall we talk about Anenih and his 'gifts' to his State and region? Odili the waste of space who only delivered militancy and politics of murder and mayhem to his region? Ibori the looter? Uduaghan who is employing killers while Tinubu deployed tried and tested performers with undoubted records of success?

What of GEJ who was deemed as "part of the culture of corruption ruining the Niger Delta over decades"? What did GEJ do as Governor? What is he now doing for Bayelsa and his region as an influential patron if not imposing medicority everywhere and empowering militants and a criminal class to consolidate a shallow quest for a power base? What is GEJ doing but looting the nation dry with his gang yet some are not even ashamed to demonstrate na.k.ed bigotry shouting "Tinubu" while hypocritically supporting a President supervising the wanton and unconscionable looting of Nigeria.

Many Nairalanders are just hateful and bellicose creatures who cannot even confront their own irrational hatred of others that is motivated by something else. Making Tinubu the bogeyman of Nigeria is a big joke that only reveals the bastardized mentality of most folks who, in their own domain, have very evil and wicked enemies dragging them back, they are never brave or honest enough to mention or confront. Shamelessly,it is to shout "Tinubu to hang" non-stop for some as if the man is worse than the evil crooks directly in the home town of many Nairalanders and even the failing President they support.

If we inspect what really matters, and bear in mind that there are hardly any saints in Nigerian politics, Tinubu, in real terms of achievement and what he lends his support to, is head and shoulder above almost all Political Godfathers in Nigeria. The equivalent of Tinubu in the SE, SS, NE, NC etc are all a pile of inactive poo, bullies, killers, unintelligent buffoons, political thugs, destroyers and talentless crooks who give nothing back to anyone in contrast to Tinubu who, despite all the villification, will stiil be adjudged, by a neutral observer, as by far the "lesser devil" of all Nigerian Political godfathers. This is the reason most hate him irrationally. He is what many wish their region had but are too hateful to admit.

What as PDP given you and your present generation at the present (since rulling for 35 years of Nigeria ) that could be better than what we all desire of a new Nigeria. Look at Lagos under ACN, that is the definition of what New Nigeria should be like. Do you know that all Nigerian citizens ( all tribes ) are equal with the Yoruba's in Lagos,as long as we all per our taxes and follow the Laws of the land. Majority of fashola's commissioners are from other tribes (especially Igbo's)Tell me how pdp is doing that in other states and the fedural level.

If Buhari accepts tinubu's proposals as Fashola President and El-Rufai as VP... Nigeria will be on the way to a New Nigeria..... Enough of all this our tribal wars among ourselves, since our leaders have said we will never break up no matter our tribal wars... Then its time to vote with serious sense.. Vote for a man that can mope of the problems, without thinking that he would do better in the 2nd term... Fashola as commission of 180 projects as a governor.. ABA,

Nigerian President Jonathan is complaining that EFCC should probe past governor Silva for not building a 5 star hotel in the states... is hotel what government should be about... WE NEED VISIONARY LEADERS WHO CAN PLAN, STRUCTURE, EXECUTE AND LEAD NIGERIA BASE ON THEIR VISION OF THE FUTURE... FASHOLA FITS THE EQUATION PERFECTLY

A PERFECT EXAMPLE IS THE NIGERIAN ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY IN LAGOS, look at how all the stars collaborate together as brothers, understanding that Nigerians should stop looking at each other as enemies... The real Enemies should either be any foreigners bringing war to us OR Penetrating the International market in force money back to Nigeria's GDP.

If they are serious, I will expect the two politicians to forge ahead with a plan whereby they help to produce electable presidential candidates at the next election. They shouldn't think of contesting, but offer guidelines and support to a 'El-Rufai - Fashola' presidential combination.

The country is begging for a strong opposition with sound electoral policies which are people oriented.

I said it previously. That is how democracy works. So how do you fight corruption with alliances. Corruption is not the primary issue afflicting Nigeria but the structural imbalances that makes for the building of a true democracy where all Nigerians irrespective of creed can aspire to any level. Hope the merger goes through so that both parties can be enlightened and drag themselves more to the centre where the vast majority of Nigerians still are.
