Arunma Oteh - SEC DG Sent On Compulsory Leave by Nobody: 8:03am On Jun 12, 2012

The director-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ms. Arunma Oteh, has been sent on compulsory leave.

Though details of Oteh’s suspension were sketchy at press time, LEADERSHIP gathered that, the DG’S suspension was based on her alleged financial mismanagement of the Commission’s funds.

LEADERSHIP gathered that, the decision to suspend Oteh, was taken by the Udo Udoma-led board of SEC after a long meeting that ended at about 9pm.

The board found the DG SEC guilty of gross mismanagement of funds in the Project 50 of the commission. The Project 50 is a programme to mark 50 years of SEC in Nigeria.

Oteh was also found guilty of overstaying in one of the highbrow hotels in Abuja for up to eight months against the commission’s policy.

The SEC board further asked Oteh to hand over to the most senior executive commissioner, Daisy Ekineh and directed that a forensic audit should be carried out on the commission’s finances

The travails of Oteh began when Hon. Herman Hembe –led House of Representatives Committee on near collapse of Capital Market accused her of mismanaging the commission and embarking on limitless spending.

But Oteh fired back and accused Hembe of demanding bribe from her.

She further claimed that the lawmakers were furious at her because she turned down the request of Hembe for a N44million tip.

Oteh said the lawmaker first asked for N39 million to defray the cost of the ongoing public hearing, and when she denied, the chairman asked for N5million.

According to her the development was in addition to the commission sponsoring a foreign trip for members of the committee, and paying them estacodes.

She questioned the credibility of the Chairman of the committee in conducting the probe, considering her allegations.

She also described the probe as a ‘Kangaroo court’, and likened the probe to an era of former Uganda leader, Idi Amin, saying “not even during the Idi Amin regime, did we have this kind of session.”

In his response, Hembe noted all the allegations listed by the SEC and subjected himself and the committee to another probe which he ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to take up.

This country is something else, simply because this Woman refused to allow corruption in SEC they have to remove her. She refused them to bring in candidate for the recently conducted recruitment, she insisted that promotion should be based on competence and qualification, they refused. The problem in this country is followership not leadership. Someone should please answer this question.

If it is true that election were rigged in this country, who rigged it? Is it Jonathan or Tinubu or Babangida Aliyu that rigged it or the so called stupid followers who snatch ballot boxes or re-write election figures for these people. Until we open our eyes to reality, this country will not move forward.

Common with the bullshit, she's got a Harvard degree and you would assume she knew better to step down once the allegations started flying around (if she was truly innocent). I believe she's just as guilty as the reps and she said all that recruitment rubbish (even though it was probably true) just to take the attention away from herself.

Yes- she should go and try that where she got the degree from and she'll surely be spending a long time in jail. Good-Riddance!!

She did not refuse any form of corruption here but was found to have carried one out herself. In any case, she is not suppose to give anyone room or reason to remove her like she has done. It is all her fault.

Well both the giver and receiver of the bribe are guilty. So what happens to Senator Ohembe even while Oteh has been suspended. I think he should face the same treatment.

I think I'll agree with you from the little information available. Her only crime was over staying in an hotel. I stand to be corrected, but no other tangible offense. Anyway, fine luck to her

Sentiments will kill us in dis country... If we continue to be sentimental about issues like this we will continue to play into d hands of our enemies/leaders. ArumahOteh is a woman I like so much But we must all admit that she ran SEC like a private business. Here's a woman that employed numerous staffs and when her subordinates questioned that due process was not followed she turned deaf ears. She told d investigation panel that she intends to inform d board to ratify d recruitments even after several board meetings had been held after those recruitments. Yet someone said dey r witch-hunting her. She stayed in a transcorp executive suite for 8months on taxpayers bill...do u know ow many small scale businesses dt money will set up. In a country where people are looking for 50k as start-up capital, someone slept in a 100k/day apartment 4 240days..I dnt even want to go into d technicalities error she made on d job. GEJ is evil we know, I dislike him more dan u can ever imagine but on dis one let's fear God...E je ka beru Olorun..gej n d board have done well

On compulsory leave with full benefits. Be not surprised if she sits out the rest of her working age in the name of sack and stills earns her full salary. Naija is a land of posibilities.

Re: Arunma Oteh - SEC DG Sent On Compulsory Leave by mapet: 1:12pm On Jun 12, 2012
I remember telling someone that when she decided and took Hembe to the cleaners, she unfortunately started a battle that will yet consume her. Her case was reminiscent of OBJ-Atiku saga; OBJ accused Atiku of corruption, Atiku did not bother on clearing himself, but to counter-accuse OBJ of corruption. The draw-back of that approach is that you have tacitly acknowledged what you are accused of.

Arunma-Oteh did not clear the air on many of those accussations, and some she tried to do, she was far from convincing. From 80k meal at Nicon, evidenced by the mean-ticket (dumb-ass Havard alumus should have know that the ticket should have been issued in favour of SEC and not her name) 8months in Transcorp, 2 Access Bank secondees on special Projects....please has the board of SEC forgotten the word SACK??

pro-Ndidi Oyuike Okereke's sponsored group are at work. When would Nigeria as a state be sanitized? This is another campaign of CALOUMY.Nigerians beware and do not allow these inglorious bastards fool us.For this pretty woman(Oteh)is just at the verge of doing good things in SEC before all these mad dogs inventing and fabricating allegation.
Re: Arunma Oteh - SEC DG Sent On Compulsory Leave by crackhaus: 1:18pm On Jun 12, 2012
Ok, so what she was sent on compulsory leave? So what she spent whatever on food & hotel bills? The so-called commitee members doing the probing are not better than her, in fact they may be worse but its not their arse on the stool today for the world to see the colour of their shit. I'm just saying, which commitee will probe that probing commitee? & which commitee will probe that probing commitee probing the commitee that is probing the SEC? Is it not the same cows & rams inside the same abbatoire? Yes I agree, it is a welcome development but then again it is just public scrutiny meant to make people who don't know any better believe that rotten tomatoes taken from amongst healthy ones will stop the 'good ones' from smelling...
