He won the election not based on ethnicity or religion, but by GOODWILL. Maybe nairalanders were too young to remember. We will never have the opportunity to vote for such a personality again in this country, neither will we have such a sentimental and violence free elections ever again, thanks to Babangida who made it look like only the north can rule this country and everyone now thinks about presidential rotation that never crossed our mind in 1993

The late M.K.O. Abiola ordered the sinking of three million copies of the Bible in the high sea. The container load of the holy book was bound for Nigeria when he used his influence to seize and destroy them. The Christian world did not bat an eyelid. I think God is paying him and his family back

queensmith:

the journalists claims in the article don't really prove that it's true. I doub't he will have had the authority to sink ships since someone will have been shipping those bibles (at a very high cost) to make some sort of profit. We should at least know where the reported ships are or have heard the owner of the ships complain?
he did sink a container load of Gideons bible. Gideons bibles are free and not to be sold, so he used his connections and the nigerian factor to sink the bibles.
Sequel to that, the prophet, t.b joshua prophesied doom to his life saying, 'just like moses, ur eyes wil see the promised land, but u'l never enter therein'. We all know what hapened next.

Madam,

I challenge you or any one here to tell the story of ITT. Tell us how Abiola took away the futures of millions of Nigerians and take Nigeria's IT infrastructure, which you said is still struggling........

Lest my conclusion are these;
1. You're simply saying what you don't know
2. Drawing wrong conclusion from faulty assumptions
3. simply joining the bandwaggon in peddling lies and falsehood......

Kobojunkie:

He never did that. In fact he did the opposite, the took away the futures of millions of Nigerians. Abiola is the reason why in the 21st century, Nigeria's IT infrastructure is still struggling to catch up with countries like india, Egypt etc.

Obviously, you are the one that needs a history lesson on June 12. Abiola would not have even come up if IBB his friend and now foe did not cancel the first presidential primaries which he did not participate in and Musa Yaradua won squarely. It is believed that he incited his friend, IBB to annul the initial Presidential primaries of both NRC and SDP and ban all the contestants to give way for him to contest knowing very well that should Musa Yaradua contest again in the SDP presidential primaries, he Abiola wont stand a chance.
Talking about everyone voting him like he did not lose in some states in the east and north is pure exaggeration. Abiola did not win the 1993 election because he was genuinely loved across the country but because Nigerians were desperate for a change from Military rule and the northan oligarchy, anyone but a northan soldier. Tofa was not even a serious contender, the odds were also against him as he was from the north and southerners were tired of anything from there. Besides, the man was not realy familiar with our political terrain as he was not even based in Nigeria. It was easy for MKO to win such a person of course, it was not out love that he won, we just thought that MKO was the lesser evil, we did not have any better choice, simple. If MKO was contesting against say Musa Yaradua, we wont even be talking about him winning the June 12 elections.

@ Katsumoto,

It's unfortunate that I got into this topic late and you've enlightened her about ITT. I had thrown her a challenge to explain the ITT situation; even with your story, let her tell us how Abiola ran Nigeria aground with ITT as alleged...

The thing is, I doubt if Kobojunky and many of the NLrs posting negative critism of Abiola were born in 1993, at best in their panties. The laziness that will not let them research and furnish themselves with balanced view information is what is killing NL.

How can someone ridiculously attribute ITT to NITEL's failures.....still beats my imagination......
Katsumoto:

Abiola was vice president of ITT Africa and EMEA and CEO/Chairman of ITT Nigeria between 1972 and 1988. ITT was an American conglomerate that had a global presence.

How can the provision telephone exchanges and lines in the 1970s be the main reason for the failure of IT infrastructure in Nigeria?
ITT did provide much of the backbone of NITEL; the issue with ITT wasn’t what it delivered but the cost at which it was delivered.

The technology that was available in the 70s and early 80s does not, in anyway, form the backbone of what is required for today’s IT infrastructure. For instance, all nations have the Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) which was used for early connectivity to the Internet. Since then, many nations have spent considerable sums to provide broadband and fibre optics which are considered essential in today’s IT infrastructure. So the questions are:

Did Nigeria contract ITT to provide Broadband and Fibre optics in the 70s (we know they were not available then)?

Why has Nigeria not expended the necessary costs to provide MODERN IT infrastructure? It is moronic to blame this on ITT considering that most Nigerians who use computer modems use the POTS cables that were laid by ITT in the 70s.

Attempting to blame an INDIVIDUAL who worked for a private foreign conglomerate for the non-existence of services that were not only not contracted but also not available at the time it was contracted to provide other services is an effort in futility. This point is further buttressed by the fact that a majority of Nigerians actually rely on the services provided by ITT over 30 years ago to access the internet in their homes if using POTS.
If I am mistaken about your definition of IT infrastructure, please proceed to educate me.

Going by your constant negative posts about the man, it is obvious you have an issue with his legacy. That is fine but no need to spread lies or inaccuracies.

Ok kid, I will gladly oblige your request. ITT was a telecommunication company that got the contract to install telephone booths in Nigeria in preparation for the FESTAC 77. What ITT supplied were refurbished telephone booths, mere decorations that never worked. This was the company Abiola represented. Late General Murtala Mohammed was the Federal Commissioner for Communications then before he took over from Yakubu Gowon in 1976. Abiola got the Federal government through his khaki friend Murtala Mohammed to pay for the contract. He was always Wining and dining with the khaki guys na. Now you know the story, so what next?

1. The primaries held my parties that IBB cancelled, especially that produced Y'ardua deserved to be cancelled. At a time when we were calling for free and fiar elections, there were widespread irregularities and money for votes accusations. IBB wanted a clean slate and a new order, and not only did he cancell the primaries and ordered new ones, he also suspended some politicians of the old order. Nigeria had no problem with that
2. Abiola did not influence the cancellation. It's an outright lie that you guys were peddling again. Abiola, did not even want to run by then, because few years before then, he lost his first wife Simbi, of whom it was said that did not want Abiola in Politics.
3. Aside from that Abiola was said to have even gone to see Babangida to get him to swear he was serious with the transition to Civil rule before contensting. He had opined that it was not worth it if Banbangida his friend was not sincerely going to hand over to civilian government, then he won't waste his time.

4. In addition, if MKO could beat the strongest Northern Candidate, Babagana Kingibe and the second strongest Jerry Gana stepped down for him, then what are you saying. He won fiar and square in an open convention in JOS.

On the Zango Kataf issue, the prominent face on the story is Maj. Zamani Lekwot. I leave you to go fetch the story and furnish yourself with the event. It was in the media then.

Abiola sponsored Boko Haramhuh? shocked shocked grin grin Haba... I Abiola needs to Naughty Lady-slap you from the grave from this daft submission.

I was brought up in d north (kaduna) when abiola died, We xtian in d north celebrated his died because all d religion crisses by then, He was among the sponsorers,
Abiola and others muslims fanatics were sponsoring some muslims fanatics then to be patronising xtian books shops to buy Bibles, after goten d bibles, they would burnt them, just to make sure they put an end to xtianity.
Doing zango cataf and many religion bloody crisses in kano, kaduna and some northern state in nigeria, Him and his counterpart were the catalys behind it, even this present Boko haram issue was Abiola and his counterpart egg that were incubeted by then, but unfurtunately d egg was alredy atched and nurssing by some another muslims terorrist just to distebilise GEJ and to make a seperation of xtians from d north.

rhymz: Death was kind to MKO Abiola walahi. He has got to be the most overhypped Politician of all time.
I don't know how authentic the story of him sinking a shipload of bibles but I wont put it beyond the man. It is on record that the man stormed out when his attempt to smuggle sharia laws into the Nigerian constitution of 1978 was strongly resisted, he did not append his signature because of it. The man was seriously fanatical no doubt.

Wrong info about the Christians voting against Abiola, check the voting pattern ,I also grew up in the north and as far as i remember the only thing the northerners celebrated however short lived was the failed Coup attempt to remove IBB, as I stepped out of deeper life bible church that Sunday I heard someone shout Allah be praised Babangida has being ousted out of office. Abiola was loved its unfortunate that the youths of now seem to be worse than the elders, we can no longer differentiate between right and wrong, all we know is dividing our selves along religious and tribal lines. Those castigating Abiola are the same people praising Jonathan who is staring corruption in the face and those nothing. Like I suspected, you are yet to acquaint yourself with the real facts about your Hero, MKO Abiola.
You obviously do not know much about the events that led to June 12 and the ITT story.
Let me give you a little history lesson that you obviously are in dire need of.
In 1977 a constituent assembly was elected to draft a new constitution, which was published on September 21, 1978.
MKO Abiola was a member of that constituent assembly. Now you know in what capacity he would have signed the 1978 constitution.
As for how Abiola emerged as the flagbearer of SDP, it is very naive of you to imply that the processes were anything close to free and fair.
It was alleged that Abiola used his money power to buy delegates.
After the annulment of the 1992 presidential primaries of NRC & SDP,MKO Abiola indicated interest in running for presidency "after due consultations," but he had Alhaji Babagana Kingibe, former National Chairman of the party, and Musa Yar'Adua to contend with. Yar'Adua was banned from the contest, but someone was representing his interest, Abubakar Atiku. At the Jos Convention of the SDP, Abiola lost the first round to Babagana Kingibe, but because Kingibe did not make the simple majority, the trio of Kingibe, Abiola and Atiku had to go for run-off.
Where Ambassador Kingibe was spending N500, N2, 000 to buy delegates, Abiola upped the stakes to N10, 000, N20, 000 per delegate. It was even allegefd that Abiola gave N10m cash to Lamidi Adedibu. And the late Adedibu was captured on tape with wads of Naira notes shouting to Oyo State delegates “Eyin ara Ibadan, Owo Abiola ti de”. Delegates for Atiku and Kingibe moved and switched to Abiola. It was all cash and carry for Abiola. Abiola won the second round and he became the flag bearer of SDP.
As for the ITT allegation, I will advise that it is you who should move on if you can't stomach the fact that Abiola did not only bloat the cost of the contract, but as well supplied substandard poo to Nigeria.
ITT's contract was to seek and provide workable and effective telephone services for Nigeria. Instead, ITT's actors and their contractors manipulated, twisted and duped the republic. Till date, one cannot point to any telephone installations, installed across the country and its villages. What ITT did in Nigeria with the Tele-communication project is mind boggling. Either that the ITT representatives and its collaborators pocketed the funds meant for building a reliable telecommunication gridlock for the benefit and well-being of the Nigerian people or that little or no telephone services were provided for Nigerians. Yet "your HERO" got the FG to pay for it, as if that was not enough, he got the FG to pay thousand percent of the real cost of the contract he did not even bother to execute.
Seriously dude, before you come out to write off any dissident opinion about "your HERO" try to do your homework well, I have to get back to my work now but please stop spewing bullocks like you know the man very well even when your own explanations betrays you, I hate being tempted to leave my work only to be schooling you.
