Honest assertion? Like calling me a village girl? huh

And I suppose the extractors will be powered by solar, in this hot weather in Nigeria if Nepa take light!
Smoke and heat fumes mixed with pepper and burning oil smell will make it impossible for me to enjoy that game on TV while trying to cook. There must be a plan B for power.

To realistically have an open kitchen the average Nigerian home requires radical changes in culinary and living habits.

First and most importantly you've got to guarantee regular water supply and electricity to keep it clean and odourless. Induction cookers and not gas to keep the heat down.

Secondly practically all our meals here are cooked from their natural states meaning more time and more smells for longer. You could set your house alight preparing goat meat - the male type. I mean you could be smelling like a goat all the way to work.

Thirdly and most challenging of all our kitchens are often full of clutter. Polybags, endless plastic bottles, packs and bins that just wouldn't look good across the living room.

What do you guys think.

Choi, see people having org.asms and laying eggs over "OPEN PLAN KITCHEN" concept,

I can bet my last 50kobo that the OP is an aboki-ress from a village in a remote place in the North cool

That's the problem and it affects our architecture here. For this reason all conveniences are located on the external walls thus robbing bedrooms of much natural lighting and sacrificing cross ventilation often. I mean to place a toilet in the middle of an average Nigerian house is just suicidal.

C'mon, don't laugh. We have very practical challenges that make it hard to implement.

There's a concept I once saw of what I can term an upscale studio. Completely open. The living area opens to the bed area, to the right an open bathroom (save a cubicled water closet), an open study and to the left of the living room just behind the bar an open kitchen leading to the porch and breakfast table. Dining of course on bar stools over the counter. Every segment on split levels with floor to ceiling windows. Very chic I tell you.

You men are gonna chase us from this thread with all this big big grammar you are dissecting here cos there is no room for thesauruses and dictionaries hereon our kitchen cabinets or how else are we klutz supposed to inteprete and make sense of all these beautiful prose rolling off your tongue/fingers about the aesthetics, practicality and whatnot tongue

Kitchen is intended solely for gossipping and the occassional fortnightly cooking when we dutiful and loving wife decide to indulge our Husbands and honour our optional marital obligation tongue

Back, lemme describe my lil apartment first

1. Wooden floor

2. Mostly black/red (the utensils such as pots, spoons, plates, pots etc)

3. Mahogany woods all over.

But it's small, for my dream kitchen, I want something like my current kitchen but a bit bigger.

Island kitchen, preferably.

This is my lil college kitchen. Can't wait to build my own BIG Kitchen kiss kiss kiss

There's a big close right across from the kitchen. As you can see, the wine "cellar" (on top of the fridge) is empty. Will never touch a drink again.

+ Lots and lots of space

+Cabinets

Nice, but the floors I see will cost you an arm and a leg to keep in top shape. Great for small families.

spacious kitchen defines modern day kitchen for me grin

Re: Your Idea Of A Modern Kitchen by ihebrooke(m): 10:54pm On Jun 23, 2012
The idea of an open kitchen is definitely not a bad one. We mostly incorporate them in our designs upon the clients request.
But then i prefer it in apartment buildings than in just any residential (duplexes and bungalows) buildings.

To run an open kitchen is not an easy task. The space must be spick and span. The place must be constantly checked to prevent one lazy sister in law from dumping dirty and unwashed plates in the sink. Imagine discussing with your visitor and a plate shatters? or a sink pipes starts leaking?

Imagine also having this type of scenario in your kitchen when your visitors are in the living room.................http://www.nairaland.com/972150/see-what-children-did-me
The list is endless, nevertheless, it is now a trend in architecture and one must be abreast with it.

You are very correct. The open kitchen is a North American thing. With our kind of food and our kitchen lifestyle in addition to lack of constant power and water it would be difficult to adopt and maintain in Nigeria. If we are able to overcome the utilities challenges, I am sure it will gradually get popular in Nigeria.

I currently live in an apartment with a semi-open kitchen. Its not too small and its nice and lovely. (see pic)
