Eighty students of Ahmadu Bello University were evacuated from the school in Zaria by their states following recent crisis that rocked parts of Kaduna State without the knowledge of the university authority, the institution’s vice chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, raised the alarm yesterday.

A statement by VC’s media consultant Waziru Isa Gwantu said Rivers and Jigawa states “whisked away 80 students of the university in suspicious manner” and the institution had already alerted the federal government of the development, as the university’s authorities were not contacted before the students were “smuggled out”.
“Rivers and Jigawa State governments have whisked away 80 students of our university in a suspicious manner on Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23. Four buses belonging to the Jigawa State government with armed mobile police escort forced their way into the Kongo campus of the university where the state’s students numbering 50 were whisked away.

“The Rivers State government, too, on Saturday committed a similar trespass and illegally evacuated students from the state in a 40-seater bus. The bus was also escorted by armed mobile policemen. Neither of the governments of these states consulted the Kaduna State governor, who is the chief security officer of the state or the authorities of the university before evacuating the students. This was why the university management alerted the federal government of this development,” it said.

When contacted, Rivers State Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s spokesman David Iyofor said he would get back to our correspondent later because he needed to get certain things clear before making comments.

In its response, the Jigawa State Education Commissioner, Professor Haruna Wakili, said it was wrong for ABU authorities to go to press over the issue of the evacuation of its students from the school. Professor Wakili said the right thing for the institution to do was to contact the state government over the matter, adding that the state government did not call a press conference when they evacuated the students for security reasons.

In a related development, Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has ordered the immediate evacuation of students of the state’s origin from trouble zones in the country.

The decision, according to him stemmed from the incessant attacks by militants suspected to be Boko Haram on innocent citizens in some parts of the northern states.

In a statement released by his spokesman, Daniel Iworiso yesterday in Yenagoa, the governor said the action was meant to safeguard the lives of its indigenes from the persistent activities of terrorism in the north, especially as witnessed in Kaduna and Yobe in the past one week.

While praying for peace to return to the area, a team including officials from the state’s ministry of Education had already been dispatched to Kaduna state with a mandate to bring back home safely students of Bayelsa origin from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Tђat's not right.

Even if the Bayelsa, Jigawa anϑ Rivers state governments felt they had τ̅o evacuate their students from the institution, they should αve first of all contacted the state government of kaduna as it is the governor †ђªt is saddled with the security of all inhabitants within the state. After †ђªt if the governor deems it necessary, the V.C will now be notified anϑ then the evacuation takes place formally.

But, now †ђªt students are whisked away without the knowledge of the governor as chief security officer anϑ the VC of the institution, if something were τ̅o happen in transit or accident for example (God forbid sha) what would be the wisdom behind this move?

Well, thank God the curfew has been relaxed anϑ normalcy is resuming gradually, very soon academic activities will resume.

We keep praying for peace in our land anϑ the exposure anϑ humiliation of those causing all this havoc whoever anϑ wherever they may be. Amen.

The Director Institute of Administration Kongo Dr. Maiturare, addressed the MOPOLs and the Bayelsa state President Igbeta Aiyebakuro, including some students around 1pm this afternoon, that they have to go to Samaru(main campus) to see the V.C to give them permission to evacuate the students. The Mopol commandant that led them said they won't pick anybody because the school authority didn't allow that, so nobody was taken. I was there this afternoon and some Bayelsa students reacted to the 'no evacuation rule', but sincerely i can't see any security measure put in place for ABU Kongo Campus, who wants to die?, the V.C never came to address us, but went to the press to complain about evacuation. I heard lectures will resume tomorrow, did he say that in the press too?,

I see no sense in protocols during emergencies like dis, d v.c shud hv learnt a lesson frm d experience of poly studnts who lost their lives during post election violence wen we heard students of nuhu bamalli polytecnic were hacked 2 death in numbers by the good pple of zaria. Wat do expect oda proactive state govt's who value lives of students 2 do. D fact dat jigawa studnts who ar purely hausas ar not assured is enuf reason 4 reasonables. Pretence is nw an outdated style... He wnts innocent studnts 2 stay while zarias hrt is pregnant wit evil... Evn d v.c is afraid of wat he dosnt knw.

Rivers & bayelsa's evacuation is understandable but the one i don't really understand is the jigawa own, Are they not all the same, don't they all belong to Arewa forum which is the chief sponsor of northern terrorism?, jigawa guvnur should go & sit down joor.

Not taking sides yet, but could someone confirm to us the sincere "physical" location of the VC during the heat of the crisis in Kaduna last week? We might be suprised he was secluded somewhere behind the rocks in Abuja. Well, more critiques to follow when his own location then is confirmed.

Individually speaking, if I were the governor, I'll evacuate even at rumour-stage before the dawn of crises cos with the present situation of things in the North, its only oneself and whomever or whatever he believes in that could "guarantee" ur safety. Hightime we stopped fooling ourselves.

Food for thought: How many calls were you able to put through to the president during the live media chat yesterday? Nigeria experienced the worst network peculiar to connecting those landlines yesterday. Who dey fool who? "Their smiling and sweet talking cannot fool us no more" (Lucky Dube)
