Blackberry Sales Only 5% In US & Europe, Why Is It Seen As Prestigious In Naija?

Washington - BlackBerry maker Research in Motion is now in a struggle for survival after its latest quarterly report underscoring its deteriorating position against other smartphone makers, analysts say.

The firm, which is headquartered in the ironically named city of Waterloo, Ontario, appears on shaky ground.

Not only did RIM report a widening loss of $518m and steep slump in sales, but it also said it would cut 5 000 jobs, nearly one-third of its staff, and delay its important BlackBerry 10 platform until early 2013.

The BB10 had been RIM's effort - a last-ditch bid, according to some analysts - to regain traction after losing ground to Apple and smartphone makers using the Google Android platform.

RIM shares tumbled 19% to close on Friday at $7.39, their lowest level since 2003, and down more than 90% from their 2008 highs.

So BlackBerry maker RIM is suffering terribly......out of date technology, falling market share behind Samsung, HTC, Apple in terms of market share (only 5% market share now in USA, falling fast) innovation etc. how come people in Nigerianand Africa still seem to love it though? Is it becaue the pinging makes it easy to stay n touch?

Personally, I still maintain an old BB which I received six months unlimited data on :-), I use it to ping peeps in naija and other places. but my iPhone 4s seems to do ten times as much - I went to a conference last month and it did EVERY business task I needed thru various apps, and also my Samsung which runs android was VERY cheap (cheaper than a Bb) and the operating system was amazing.

Apart frm the low cost of the handset and pinging, why do Nigerians still perceive the BB as a "prestigious" handset?

I think ppl like BB cos of d unlimited plan on it.

well, I think it was the social craze that pushed blackberry sales, all the rich people and fly people had one,so the middle class wanted in, so the ripple effect started,and you know nigerians and their craze to own expensive things,cos its d new raving thing in town . You remember people bought their simcards way back @ 20,000 those days.Its the social trend,

If you fully want to maximize the functionality of a phone,you'd think more than a blackberry.Nigeria is just behind in everything.Atm was introduced in the 60's but it took Nigeria over 40 years to use an Atm.
Blackberry is fit for Nigeria because Nigeria is still very backward technologically.

High cost of communication in Nigeria, and the benefit the blackberry phone + packages it offers, simply helps people from going totally incommunicado.
So long as the cost and ease of communication remains high in Nigeria,blackberry will still be king!!!

Stop deceiving yourself, the plan is not unlimited. It is just 1GB. Most people erroneously think it is unlimited because they do not get to exhaust their 1GB within 30 days. Try downloading 2-3 high quality full length films and you'll see it's not "unlimited".

seriously,BB internet access isnt unlimited.its 1gb.when i was using a BB,i always exhausted it coz of my movie downloads.i swtiched to android and by God,i realised blackberry is just crap.i got an htc with windows mobile operating system just to check it out and it was aeons above blackberry in terms of use.the only advantage of a BB is that it pings.aside that,its just BS

Heaven knows i could never use a BB #TeamAndroid When I tweet or share some things BB users keep asking "How did U do that " lol. BB OS is even worse than Symbian #ImJustSayinh

BlackBerry is Prestigious, that they are having management and financial troubles as a company does not take away their pedigree from those who have used that phone to further their business ideals and perfect their relationships.

I hate BB with a passion. Stuck with nokia (E6-00)

Mine is unlimited mtn BBC.....
I even prefer it to any other gadget dat i have..
