President Goodluck Jonathan, state governors, chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other top government officials received a rude shock in the ancient city of Benin on Saturday when the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Erediauwa, declined to receive the president who was visiting his palace.

The president had arrived the Edo State capital for the grand rally of the state PDP ahead the July 14 governorship election and had been received at the Benin Airport earlier by Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
He, thereafter, proceeded to the monarch’s palace, but on taking his seat next to the oba’s throne, he was made to wait for about 15 minutes before a palace official announced to his delegation and the Bini chiefs that were also on their seats, that the royal father would not be seeing him because of circumstances beyond his control.

However, the monarch’s official added that the usual palace formalities would still be observed in the absence of the monarch, including prayers for the president and the distribution of cola nuts.
According to him, “because of circumstances beyond his control, the Oba cannot receive the president, but the normal procedures of prayer for our guest will still be carried out.”

President Jonathan, who was apparently taken aback by the announcement, looked calm as he simply lowered his gaze even as the palace official invited the most senior chief present to offer the prayers.
After the prayers, the palace official, again, announced that even though the Oba would not see the president in public, he would be willing to receive him alone in another section of the palace.

It was not immediately clear whether President Jonathan, who had removed his cap in line with Bini tradition to wait for the Oba, later met the royal father alone despite security requirement which would have been against the president being alone outside the close monitoring of his body guards.

Even though, the palace did not reveal the reason for the monarch’s decision not to publicly welcome President Jonathan, sources in the palace volunteered that the traditional ruler was merely adhering to the dictates of the ‘gods’ who had made it impossible for him to appear in public to receive the president at that particular time.

If they didn't tell him prior to going there, then i don't blame the oba. but if they informed him and he asked them to come only not to appear, then this is an insult. i shall say nothing more

Palace Press Statement: I didn't shun Jonathan - Oba of Benin⁠

OBA of Benin, Oba Erediauwa, has denied what he described as “certain mischievous publications in some national newspapers”  that he shunned President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, during their visit to Benin, weekend.

It had been widely reported that Oba Erediauwa did not come out to
receive the President when Jonathan had come calling at his palace in Benin. This had in turn fueled suggestions that the Benin monarch shunned the President and members of his entourage.

Reacting on Monday, the Benin Traditional Council in a statement issued in Benin by Mr. Frank Irabor, Secretary to the council, explained that “in fact, it is the respect and love the Oba has for Mr. President, that made him see our President in his private chamber in the Palace despite a complicated situation on that day. 

“The public is reminded that three weeks ago, the Oba waited for over two hours in his open office, where he received the Vice – President, Dr. Namadi Sambo and PDP chieftains that were in Benin for their political rally.” 

The Benin monarch advised politicians to avoid violence in the forth coming governorship election in the state, saying that political office occupation should not be seen as a do or die affair.

It will be recalled that the President and PDP leadership were in Edo State to attend a campaign rally in support of Major-Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (rtd), the party’s governorship candidate for the July 14, 2012 election and were at the palace of the Benin monarch for the customary courtesy call on him.

The palace has released a public statement on this that the Oba recived GEJ in his private chambers. I'm actually worried about the security implication of allowing the President into an inner chamber alone. What if he never came out again? It was a big security risk I believe!

Anyway, Oba still dey use Nitel number for his palace na waoh.

Pple shd always think before they talk.......it is always good to be fair in our speeches, the oba of Benin palace press crew has clarified dat the king did not snub the president.
