Over 50 per cent of basic school teachers in Sokoto State cannot read and write, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Mohammed Modibbo, has said.

Modibbo revealed this when the Senate Committee on Education visited him at UBEC headquarters, in Abuja.

He told the senators why efforts being made by the commission to intervene in basic education in the state have not worked well.

For example, I have told you that 80 per cent of the teachers in Sokoto State cannot read,” he said. “I have given them UBE books in Sokoto State. But more than 50 per cent of the entire teachers in the state cannot read, because they are unqualified. So how can they read the UBE books we sent to them? How would they be able to teach the children how to read and impact on the children so that we can record success with our objective?”

The UBEC boss solicited for more concerted efforts by all stakeholders to achieve any meaningful results from the various intervention efforts by the government.

He also asked the senators to amend the law establishing the commission give it more powers.

“If through legislation UBEC is empowered to close any sub-standard school, it will go a long way to solving the problem,” he said. “There are so many ramshackle schools in Nigeria. People open garages and call them schools, and parents take them there.

If we have power to close them, if we have power to sanction any state that is employing unqualified teachers, it would go a long way in helping the children.”

How did these teachers get licenses?

Actually, I am assuming too much. If there is licensing, isn't it an indictment of his administration that he has allowed unqualified people to teach?

And if there isn't, then they need to get on it asap.

i cant dispute it. first it comes from an aunthority, then secondly, i served as a teacher in a northern rural community school. most of their schools r grossly understaffed and even d staffs r grossly underqualified in most cases.

unfortunate thing is that there is a glut of qualified teachers in the south, but north is no no for them. the north needs to create the environment to attract people to come and develop their system otherwise, they may end up becoming a slave of their own making in future days.

There should be re-training of those illiterate teachers and a 5 years window for them to acquire relevant training and qualifications.

Failure to do this should warrant a summary dismissal.

who will spend the money to retrain them

5 year window: what of the poor students subjected by being taught be useless teachers?

Certainly if it were your kid involved, you'd not want to give them that much leeway grin

Is it that there are no persons who can read to apply for the job ? Or those who can read have better job ? And if Government decides to send people from other states to teach there, Boko Haram will kill them because "Western Education is a Haram". Any way, may be its best for them to just study Arabic.

Eg Namadi Sambo, Tambuwal, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, IGP, NSA Dasuki, Chief of Air staff etc.

Tђere are concentrations of illiterate nigerians in all regions jux dat some are more ignorant than others.

All the same dis aboki right here is more qualified n exposed than most of Ūя̲̅ household combined cool

#Bigotry wnt take us anywhere nor solve Nigeria's problem, so be warned °☺k˚!.
