Two Arik Planes In Crash Scare In Abuja & Jos by mukina2: 11:00am On Jul 15, 2012
BUT for divine intervention, yesterday could have recorded yet another air mishap, as an Arik Air Flight W3 232, heading to Abuja from Enugu, skidded off the runway on arrival in Abuja due to turbulence, which warning the pilot allegedly ignored.

This happened hours after another Arik plane in Jos brushed the wing of a parked Nigeria Air Force plane, causing substantial damage to the two aircraft.

The Director-General of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Demuren, confirmed the Jos incident.

Also, a statement credited to the Nigerian Air Force confirmed the accident last night. Wing Commander A. Makun, who signed the statement, said: “An Arik Airline (aircraft) Boeing 737-700 with Registration No. 5NMJI on a routine flight to Lagos, brushed the wing of a parked Nigerian Air Force C-130 (NAF 917) at the Yakubu Gowon Airport, Heipang Jos.

“The incident happened at about 13:45 hrs today (yesterday) when the Arik aircraft was taxiing at the airport tarmac in preparation for take-off.

“The tank 1 wing tip of the NAF C-130 was damaged while the wing of the Arik aircraft was dismembered and hung on the aircraft.

“There was no casualty recorded during the incident; however, the two aircraft had to abort their missions.

“The NAF C-130 was in Jos to airlift students of the Air Force Military School and Air Force Girls’ Military School.

“Meanwhile, a joint investigation by the Nigerian Air Force and Arik Airline management has commenced.”

The Guardian learnt that the Arik aircraft, a Boeing 737-700 from Enugu to Abuja, scheduled to depart Enugu at about 10am, was delayed until 11:40am due to reports of approaching bad weather in Abuja.

According to an eyewitness, in a rush to get to Abuja before the start of the rains, the captain allegedly ignored all warnings and “took the aircraft and passengers through an extremely turbulent flight.”

A passenger on the fight said: “People clung on to their seats for dear life with shouts and cries of ‘Jesus’”.

On landing at Abuja, the plane almost skidded off the runway and the passengers had to wait in the aircraft for 30 minutes before disembarking due to the downpour.

The NCAA had, last week, warned airline operators and pilots about the danger of prevailing weather, which could be dangerous for flight operators.

In a statement signed by its Director-General, Demuren, the regulatory body said that there was need for pilots to exercise restraint in adverse weather and respect weather forecast.

Demuren advised pilots to be patient enough to wait and allow weather to subside or pass over the airfield before commencing flight.

“We are in the mid-stream of rainy season, which is usually characterised by severe thunderstorm and line squall with its attendant turbulence, microbursts, lightning and low-level wind shear.

“Suffice it to say that such weather conditions can be deadly to aircraft on approach or departure from an airport and have been responsible for a number of fatal accidents in the world and in our country, Nigeria,” the statement said.

NCAA said that it was mandatory for pilots to obtain weather briefing from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), including departure, en-route and destination weather information prior to flight operations.

“You are required to ensure strict compliance with the laid-down regulations,” the statement directed.

I don't even understand the story, it does not make sense. If they warned the pilot, why did they allow passengers to get on the plane, how did the pilot manage to find his way in the air?

How can pilot(professional) just ignore warning like that?

Should the pilot not get the go ahead from those in the tower?

It does not make sense. I think they are using the pilot as a scapegoat for their carelessness.

We warned pilot indeed. Bullshyt!

Nigeria at it again!
How does a pilot get the clear for take off if he was also warned not to take off?
No pilot would jet off with an airplane without being told he has a course clear of traffic and a sky path safe enough to fly.
Irresponsible people in power in Nigeria keep showing how badly they can affect our nation's course.

Untill the Nigerian nation learns how to punish Some Nigerian animals called human beings, lawlessnes will continue to reign supreme. The stupid pilot didn't act alone, but in conjunction with the careless, the lawless and the incompetent staff at the Controle Tower who allowed the said aircraft to still take off despite the danger signal. Am just tired of hearing silly things about this country.....may be lawless runs in the blood of we Nigerians. God please take away this madness!

The pleural of aircraft is aircraft, so the journalists were right

Back to topic, not until company owners/employees are made to face charges, they will continue to put lives at risk

Nigerian news reports on airplanes are laughable. This writer claimed at the begining that the Arik plane had skidded off the runway due turbulence and at the end of the report that it almost skidded off the runway. Reporters unashamedly display so much ignorance putting up their stories and misinforming the public in their senseless pursuit of sensational journalism. Hardly can turbulence be blamed for an airplane overruning the runway. No pilot will deliberately put his life and others at risk. The issue of weather deals with the unpredictable aspect of nature otherwise the tsunamis and the hurricanes of the world wouldnt catch people unawares in spite of the technology at their disposal especially in those parts of the world.
My guess is that the pilot initially delayed departure out of Enugu due the Abuja weather conditions made available to him and upon receiving another report stating a marked improvement set out on the journey only to arrive at Abuja such a time that the weather had deteriorated again but just good enough to make a landing.

Aircraft dont have an (s) as plural in English language unless you go into advanced grammar to express they are in their various types. The airplanes here are the same Boeing 737 type, thus aircraft is correctly used. Had there been other types like the Airbus,Cessna,Bombardier, then aircrafts can be acceptedly used. Just like you dont pluralise people, water etc unless it becomes absolutely necessary for expression. cool

Which eyewitness was there to say that the Pilot 'ignored all warnings in a bid to rush to Abuja'? Why are Nigerians and Nigerian journalists so wicked that they would publish damaging lies like these? Why try to pin this on the Pilot who must have been given clearance to take off from the tower before flying?
Re: Two Arik Planes In Crash Scare In Abuja & Jos by ocheejemb: 11:55am On Jul 15, 2012
This doesnt make sense...Can a Pilot just enter the Plane and take off without explicit clearance from the Tower?
