Ramadan: Look Out For Newmoon Today – Sultan Tells muslims by rabzy01: 1:08pm On Jul 19, 2012

Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar yesterday enjoined Muslims all over the country to start looking for the new moon of Ramadan today.

This was contained in a statement by Chairman Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs Sokoto Sultanate Council Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu.

According to the statement, “Thursday 19th July 2012 which is equivalent to the 29th day of Shaban 1433 AH is the day to look for the new moon of Ramadan”.

It urged the Muslim community to watch out for the new moon today and report its sighting to the nearest district or village head for onwards communication to the Sultan.

The statement gave some GSM numbers which can be used to report the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan to the Sultan of Sokoto. The numbers include 08037150100, 08033413534, 0805073872, 08035560022, 08039143886 and 08039655997.

"It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases - that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. Allah has not created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know."

Holy Quran 6:96
"[He is] the cleaver of daybreak and has made the night for rest and the sun and moon for calculation. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing."

CY09: When will the western Muslims have to watch out for their own full moon?

It takes some skill and the cloud patterns down south don't favour easy sighting on the very first night of each month. I have actually become skilled at recognizing the moon on the 2nd-5th night. However, sighting the new moon will be extremely difficult in the west, too many clouds. However in the North with deserts, it is quite easier especially since they are far away from the coast.

Having said that, our people hardly make any effort. It is not a big deal except you are living in ignorance.

Pergrace: Please, what happens if no full moon is seen?

We would then start fasting on Saturday as tomorrow, Friday would automatically become the 30th of Shaban and Saturday would be the 1st of Ramadan.

There can only be at most 30 days in each of the 12 months of the Islamic Calendar.
