The Federal Government has concluded plans to pay women who attend antenatal clinics the sum of N5,000 as part of efforts to tackle the menace of maternal mortality.

The plan would be executed as part of the Midwifery Service Scheme (MSS) introduced in 2010.

The Director, Primary Health Care System Development with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Abdullahi Mohammed, disclosed the conclusion of payment plan in Abuja on Sunday.

According to him, government budgeted N15 billion for Maternal and Child Health Care from the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).

He added that part of the money would also be used to employ additional 2,000 midwives for the MSS.

Mohammed said the payment plan was designed to assist women to address the demand side constraints of maternal health.

no wonder they always claim that there is nothing in the treasury when the only thing they can think of is give give and give as if the money is theirs, nothing like empowerment.
Teach them how to fish instead of giving them fish!

Another JEG wrong move. For naija? I hope so because I strongly believe, before the money is credited to the mothers, the baby would have started pre nursery. Besides, some will still collect the money and still die because it cant replace good treatment and care.
Instead, build solid specialist ,modernised, well equiped, hi tech hospitals even far better than fasholas mother and child own, even if it is only one - two in a state, then you will see that motality rate will decrease rapidly.

Another stupid waste of money!

Why not just spend the damn resources on upgrading existing healthcare infrastructure if the concern is to reduce maternal mortality?

People shouldn't be rewarded for screwing their partners.

GPWAN.... Ghost Pregnant Women Association of Nigeria, go start to operate very soon
5*36=180k..
So if the GPWAN collects the money in 36 states every month for 9months, na money o..
But its still good, cos it would really go a long way, for the people that really needs the money...

These plans are good and laudable. Nigerians are not stupid people, we have brains, BUT....our problem has ALWAYS been GOVERNANCE. A game without rules is no longer a game and then even when we know the rules we appoint a REFEREE. This is exactly our problem, NO rule, No Referee. So now that I have looked in my magic ball (actually you don’t need one to predict this, we all know what will happen) let me tell you what I see.......... Fake clinics popping up every where with so called attendance and false list of pregnant women. This is just another ploy so that someone can defraud.

This idea is nice. However a check should be put in place on the number of times a particular mother may merit payment to avoid population explosion in the north.

This is not adding up at all. Pregnant women are meant to pay N26k+ for ante-natal in University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) a government hospital. If the idea is to encourage attendance to these ante-natal classes and thereby decreasing child mortality rates, how many pregnant woman can afford this kind of money in the first place to be able to qualify for N5k from the govt?

I took my wife to UPTH and you could see the crowd of pregnant women for the ante-natal orientation and half-way thru the class it was mentioned that the total amount to be paid was N26k+, more than 70% of the women just stood up and left! I'm very sure that half of those women will end up in local local midwifery homes. Instead of promising to pay N5k/monthly for attendance, I suggest they knock down the price of ante-natal registration first to say N10k to encourage attendance.

You want to run yourself fast fast. If FG fails to continue with the payment or the program scrapped you will have to donate the pregnancy & pikkins to NGOs
