Facebook "Sponsored Search Results" by JideTheBlogger(m): 9:44am On Jul 23, 2012
I stumbled on a post on TNW, that Facebook is testing "Sponsored Search Results".

For those of you who use Facebook to search for people, places and things, you might start seeing “sponsored results” jump into the fray. It’s currently in limited release, and the picture below shows what it looks like.

The company wants to find out if we’ll click on something that’s “sponsored” over something that’s not. If we’re looking for "cassava bread" grin , someone could pay for their company page to be “sponsored”, which means it would show up before other organic, or non-paid, results.

We’re familiar with this approach, as it’s Google’s bread and butter. Facebook as we know, is all about connection. Most people are not on Facebook for discovery. Many people connect with people and companies that they have already met, heard about or done business with.

Though some businesses will get some "Likes" from this but will this "sponsored search results" really work on Facebook? Will it make Facebook a bit of money or might fail?

Why can't they make it free like Google.

Anyways, it will be a good for business owners.

I think Facebook should worry about other things like user satisfaction rather than trying to make more ad revenue.
Google plus recently surpased facebook on that and that gives a sign that all may not be well with Facebook users afterall.
It just a matter of time before they start loosing users to other social media networks.

Facebook was established to make profit, so you're not in a position to tell them what to worry about. They've seen an opportunity to increase their profit and they're about to take it.

Intuitive click on a Facebook search is less likely, but a possibility. People search for what they are familiar with on facebook, and search to discover on Google as the poster has pointed. However, there's enough money to be made even if just 1% of over 500M users click on a sponsored result... and nothing to loose either.

Google also does sponsored searches.
By sponsored searches, it doesn't mean people will pay to get search results.
rather, some people with businesses can pay FB to bring their page to the top once someone searches for something
similar to their name, or business.

With facebook's entry into the stock market & their dwindling/ decline in stock prices, I don't blame them for becomin more money conscious. & funny thing is despite the fact that many people use twitter for news, gossip, e.t.c., I think facebook still serves some purpose that twitter doesnt. Its DIFFERENT, so it has its own ''loyal'' clientele. ''facebook is boring'', ''facebook is boring'', but u still log in there sometimes expecting to see something interesting, & its not everytym u r disappointed.lol.

FB is now scrapping the bottom of the barrel for revenue sources. People use FB to connect not to search for new products/services. They need to get creative and find some other solutions; not search. That said, I ran a sponsored ad campaign on FB last year but was not really satisfied with the results. It cost approx. $1.05 per click, targeting audiences in Nigeria & South Africa.

Now there is pressure to deliver to shareholders. We'll wait and see how this pans out.

If there could be a good alliance of Bing and Facebook to better take the search market to the next innovative level.

@idirect, who told you Facebook is free? FYI they make money off you and advertisers each time you click on those tiny little boxes by the left.
@Billionaire, i don`t think Facebook will go extint anytime soon but it`s probable sometime in the distant future.
