MOONWALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 24

"It's the girl, it's her, I told you, Simon, she's going to kill us all?"
Elias was quick to speak up. All eyes turned to him that he had to raise his hands questionably.
"What? That's the truth, you all see the power the girl possesses"
Simra looked to Elias direction, she wondered why it was always Elias speaking against Kara, why does he want her dead at all cost.
"If you would permit me, Simon"
She turned to Simon and got permission to speak.
"While going through Kara's wound, I noticed she was stabbed with a relic dagger; a relic dagger is the only thing that can kill an immortal. Now here is the interesting part, the relic dagger was soiled with the citrus flower, the deadliest poison on this planet. This means this was deliberate, someone wants Kara dead. This has not been the first attempt. What if Kara is the victim, what if there is an enemy that wants her dead since she is the only person that stands in the way. I just saw a vision, Simon. There is light and there is darkness. They are two personalities. Once the light is gone, darkness rules. Have we ever sat down to think that the enemy has been pushing us to kill the light, to kill the only person capable enough to stop darkness? What harm has Kara done other than good? She single-handedly saved the kids during the race. What other sign do you want to prove that she is the light and that someone is trying to put off that light so darkness would reign"
Silence enveloped the hall of prophecy. Simon felt stupid like a scale fell off from his eyes.
"A war is coming my Lord, what I saw is a war against the whole universe, and it wasn't Kara leading the army, it was an army of demons, led by their king Zelda!"
Simra's words sounded like thunder in the ears of the elders...
"What! What is this oaf saying? Zelda? Zelda has been locked away in the underworld for over a thousand years! There is no he can get out of the underworld woman! Kara is the threat here, don't you see it?"
Elias spoke up again.
"She has a point, Simon, we might just be fighting against our own savior, the girl has been here for years, she has clearly done more good than harm"
Another elder named Cephas spoke up.
Simon was quiet, all eyes were on him. Finally, he spoke out
"The competition would continue, if the girl survives, she would join the knights of the refuge. Simra could not help the smile that crept up to the corner of her lips, she bowed and hurried to her chambers to break the good news to Kara.
***
Elias was careful as he found his way through his secret tunnel, he had an important meeting, his plans have been ruined! Simra ruined it and she mist pay!
"You better have some good news for me, it's dangerous to call me out here at night, someone might see me, demon"
Elias clenched out.
"Yes Elias, there is good news, I found him, I found Zelda"
It was the Rakshasa, it had to break the news to Elias.
Elias's eyes went wide?
"Where is the demon, speak!"

"Easy Elias, he is right here in the refuge"
Elias jaw dropped now, he couldn't believe he had been with the answers he had sought for many years.
With a lower tone, he required.
"Just give me the name"

Without hesitation, the demon muttered
"Jason"

CHAPTER 23

Simra paced in thoughts, she pondered on how Jason was able to get the blood of a Rakshasa. It is impossible to obtain the blood of a Rakshasa without killing it. And for all she knows, a Rakshasa cannot be killed. Now she understands why anyone who ventures into the land of the fallen kings never return. The land of the fallen kings flowed with green pastures until a witch cursed it with the demon Rakshasa. It took just a day for the Rakshasa to completely wiped out the entire race and sank the city to the ground! Yes! A Rakshasa is that powerful. How then did Jason obtain it's blood.
"Simra?"
Lia snapped her out her reverie.
"Yes Lia, you can talk without touching me, are you aware?"
Simra had to reemphasize.
"Oh okay, what is it, you look troubled"

"It's the boy"

"You mean Jason?"
Simra nodded to Lia's question.
"What about him?"

"I have a bad feeling about that kid"
Lia eyes went wide, she could not believe what she heard from Simra.
"I can't believe you are saying this, that guy just saved Kara"

"That's the point, saving Kara, how did he do that?"
Lia made a pause and stammered a little when she got the point Simra was trying to make.
"Maybe he got lucky"

"Come on Lia, no one has ever gone to the land of the fallen kings and come back. And that is not even the issue here, the issue is he came back with the blood of a Rakshasa, a Rakshasa Lia, no one, absolutely no one has ever been able to kill or acquire the blood of the Rakshasa, except..."
Simra looked to Lia who had the same confused look she had.
"Except Zelda, only Zelda Lia, only the master of them all can kill and acquire the blood of a Rakshasa"
Lia got the point but she could not bring herself to believe tiny Jason is the master of every demon to ever walk the planet.

"He is just a kid Simra"

"Lia think about it, he was able to steal Kara powers without the use of a gaelic stone, you remember right? Now it makes perfect sense"
Lia shook her head in disbelief, she felt she had heard enough.
"Simra that kid put his life on the line to save Kara, the least you can do is appreciate him, not to harbour suspicions without any clear proof, let the boy be, I mean it's Jason we are talking about here, the boy is just a teen"
Simra was going to reply but a few guards standing just outside her Chambers caught her attention.

"Simon has requested your presence in the elders meeting"
Simra quickly waved them off
"I'll be there shortly"
But they seemed adamant and would not go.
"I'm sorry keeper but it is a matter of urgency"
Straightway they teleported her to the hall to join the elders. She perceived a troubled atmosphere at her entrance. Simon looked disturbed, same with all the elders.
"Simra, where is the girl? She lives?"
Simon's question made Simra felt he actually cared for Kara but she soon realized it was the opposite.
"She lives my Lord"

"No, she can't...follow me Simra"
Steadily Simra followed to the hall of prophecy. Simon stopped at the focal point and pointed to the new inscription on the prophecy stone placed all around the hall.
"This was discovered at cock crow, a new prophecy scripted by the spirits"
Simra went close and read aloud.
'With the rise of the dark moon shall the child of light yield to darkness, and then, light shall seize to exist"
Simra looked back Simon who had the same troubled look on his face.
She knew part of the reason she was summoned was to connect to the stone in which the prophecy was scripted and get a vision of what is to come.
She went closer to the stone and laid her hands on it.
On touching the stone her hands got fastened to it. She began to groan and got the attention of the elders.
"I see blood everywhere, I see darkness, I see..."
She removed her hands and made a pause, her eyes were wide open, she was lost in thoughts that she didn't notice the blood that dripped from her nose, or the continuous call for Simon to get her attention.
"You see what Simra?"
Simon had to call when she wasn't saying anything.
"I see blood, I see darkness that cuts across this planet to the beyond. I see war; war that no being has ever witnessed in the history of our fathers, I see evil prevailing over light, I see the end of the refuge"

MOON WALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 22

Jason strength had doubled within few seconds, he whipped back the Rakshasa with a more powerful force that it crashed against the throne set at the far end of the hall.
Slowly his clothes ripped apart, the size of his body began to rupture, he began to writhed in pain as his veins tore out of his skin to fit into the beast that fought it's way out. The Rakshasa stood back and watched with it's eyes wide open. Soon the fair looking green eyed kid turned into a vicious beast. He roared, it was with so much energy that the tables and armours set in the hall blew out to dust, his fangs stood out with a blood eyed hunger for blood.
He sped at the Rakshasa within milliseconds, greater than the speed of lightening. The Rakshasa attempted to teleport out of the way for safety but Jason was too fast, he seized the Rakshasa by the neck before it made the attempt and whipped it against the wall like a piece of paper.
The Rakshasa sped for safety and made Jason halt.
"Alas! What do I see! A legend of Zelda, the king Dracula, the last of it's kind"
Jason was not in for any more jokes, he picked the Rakshasa and snapped its neck, but he clearly needed more than that to kill a Rakshasa.
"You'll be needing more than that to finish me off Zelda"
The demon had to break the news to him.
"You seek the cure?"
On hearing the Rakshasa talking on his terms he let his rage down and slowly he returned back to his former self.
"Oh put some clothes on, you'll find one over there"
The demon directed while it took back the damsel form.
"Yes, it's what I seek, how do I get it?"

"You need it for the girl? Why? She must be an important one"
Jason made no comment, he focused on fitting into the robe he was provided.
"No one would venture into the land of the fallen kings, I mean I have never given anyone the opportunity to leave here with a body, only their spirits are permitted to join the spirits world. So why travel to your death? It can only be desperation, suicide, oh and love!"
Jason's silence was all the Rakshasa needed to have the answer
"It is love...you must be mad Zelda"

"Stop calling me that"

"But that's who you are, the greatest demon to ever walk the earth. You were born on the same day with the girl of light, you made the moon dark, you are the curse, the darkness, the doom they all fear, and they all think it's her, while you, you are the devil they fear, you are right under their nose and they can't figure it out. Oh what a bliss! what business do you have with her Zelda? she is your opposite, she is your unending fate!"

"Mind your business!"
Jason shouted back at the Rakshasa.

"Oh Zelda, why do you do this for a girl that is your doom? You are darkness and she is light"
Jason was full of rage now. The Rakshasa had to keep it's mouth shut and he was going to make sure that happens!
His eyes went stone red as he roared with fangs erupting from his hands.
"I said mind your business!"

"Oh sorry my Lord"
Jason was a little surprised when the demon knelt before him.
"What is this? What are you doing?"

"Oh you do not know? You are our master, with you we would claim this planet and beyond, we would match with a shout of victor as we awaken our commander Gaza! It's you we've been waiting for Zelda, to lead us. Gaza tried but failed but then the prophecy promised us you, and here you are..."
Jason shook his head in disbelief.
"You are mad"

"No Zelda..."

"That's enough, give me the cure and I have said, stop calling me that name"
Jason requested for his purpose for being there.
"Well I am the cure, funny isn't it? My blood is the cure to the relic dagger, I am your eye my Lord, so you do not get wounded in battle, I should go with you"

"You must be dreaming, I think it's time you wake up demon. I can never associate with a beast like you"

"But you are the lord of all beasts"

"Oh give me the cure demon!"
His eyes went stone red again that the Rakshasa had to obey.
He filled a small bottle with it's dark blood and handed it over to Jason.
"Here, a drop of this would heal her, save the rest for yourself, when you are ready to embrace your true self, you know where to find me. Fate has brought you here, fate would bring you back"
Jason snatched the cure before he replied the demon.
"Never, I will never come back to you!"
The Rakshasa remained quiet as it opened a portal to the refuge gate
"There you go my Lord, it's almost sundown, go through this portal, there are many who lay wait to stop you, but going through this portal would keep them safe from your wrath"
Jason was at the threshold of the portal when the demon reminded him.
"Remember, she light and you are darkness, darkness and light are never meant to be, always remember my lord, always remember"

Jason went through the portal and found himself in the refuge.
Simra could not believe her eyes when she saw Jason in her Chambers.
"Jason?"
She questioned, maybe she had seen a ghost
"It's me keeper, the cure, it's here"
Simra quickly snatched the bottle to investigate.
"This is the blood of a Rakshasa, you killed a Rakshasa? How is that possible? It's impossible"

"No, it gave me it's blood"
Simra eyes went wide.
"A Rakshasa would never give anyone it's blood, it has never happened in the history of our fathers, it's either it was killed or..."
Her eyes went back to the kid who stood before her.
"Keeper? Kara is dying, there is no time left"
Simra realised Jason actually made perfect sense, she turned back to Kara.
"A drop is all you need"
Jason Instructed.
She did as Instructed and watch Kara gasp back to life.
"Thank you, thank you Simra"
She hurried and hug Simra who she thought had saved her life.
"No Kara, it's Jason, he saved your life"
Her eyes turned to Jason who stood by the door, his green eyes never shined better, his hair that partly covered his eyes made perfect sense to her now; Jason saved her life? How did he do it? The relic dagger has no cure, he must have gone to the ends of the worlds to make sure she lives. All the while she stared at him with love filled eyes, the final words of the Rakshasa continued to reverberate in his mind.
"She is light and you are darkness, light and darkness are never meant to be"

[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 21

Jason traveled with the map's direction and discovered it wasn't as far as he had imagined. He put aside fear and walked through a portal he found open. According to the map he understood he had to go through even when the portal appeared to be like the head of a lion. Through the portal, he found himself in a desert that appeared to be strangely calm.
He stopped to take a look around to find anything familiar but it was all blank.
He took a deep breath and encouraged himself; looking back to his map he found it was blank.
"Okay, let's see how this goes"
He braced himself and began to roam around in the desert. He knew time was ticking, and soon the sunrise would be up to determine Kara's death, he had to find the cure fast!
"Who is here?"
He screamed and heard his voice reverberate.
On taking another step he sank into sand that led to a fallen castle underneath. He coughed and dusted off the sand on his clothes before he started towards a large hall he saw ahead of him.
"What is this? Is this the most dreadful land of the fallen kings?"
Jason questioned as he approached the hall in doubt; the hall appeared to be beautifully designed with a big round table and a throne to signify the king's place in the hall.
He went around the table as he admired the quality of woodwork, it was one he had never seen before
"Beautiful"
He commented

"Yes...Yes, it is beautiful isn't it?"
A beautiful damsel startled him from behind.
"And you are?"
Jason asked with suspicious eyes.
"You do not need to know young warlock"
Jason got lost for a moment staring at the damsel. Her eyes were made of gold, it shone so brightly that it pulled a smile to Jason's face.
"You are beautiful"
He commented while lost in the moment.
"Are you sure young warlock?"
The damsel's question brought him back to his senses. She had eyes made of gold; he remembered how his father had read to him about the Rakshasa, the shapeshifting demon who was able to take on the shape of a beautiful damsel, the eyes of gold is only significant to those who have knowledge about the demon.
"What if I tell you that all these are just an illusion? I am being sincere here young warlock"
The damsel said and in a twinkle of an eye, the well-designed hall wrecked Into a deserted webbed hall with skulls and skeletons that proved many had come to the same place and lost their lives. Looking to the throne he saw a skeleton dressed in fine linen, with a staff in his hands. On looking back to the damsel he discovered she had taken on her real form, a vicious beast with wings.
"Who are you?"
He questioned as he let down his staff, he knew the Rakshasa feeds on fear, and so he was wise to remain brave.
"I am the keeper of this land, and you! You have trespassed the land of the forbidden!" The demon roared out with eyes darkened as blood and fangs likened to that of a vampire.
A strange wind began to revolve around the demon as it spread its wings so wide that it threw down the knights armor that stood on every side of the wall.
With an energy forces, it gathered every arsenal with swords and directed them to Jason. Jason had to think fast, there was no way he could speed through the weapons coming at him, he held his staff and pointed it at the impending force coming at him. He prayed his father staff would help, he had seen his father pointing the staff the same way to ward off threats; it had to work for him now, but sadly it didn't, he was a bit lucky, the swords picked him and nailed his clothes to the wall to hang him up. His staff fell to the ground, he tried to struggle but he could not move a muscle.
"Yes you are scared, you have fear in you, Kneel and beg for mercy kid!"
The Demon requested as it approached Jason with fangs ready to feed.
"Never"
Jason responded, he took a deep breath and calmed his nerves, this is war, kill or be killed. Opening his eyes he picked his staff with his mind and drew it back to his grip, he merged his mind with the staff and blew the swords holding him up to dust. He stood on his feet and stamped his staff on the ground, it let out a force that blew the demon meters backward.
With rage, the demon started towards him with greater force.
"I said kneel and plead for your life kid!"
It called out as it approached Jason.
Jason's mind was made up, his eyes went dark yellow, he was going to use his hidden powers now even if his father had always warned him not to, he was going to let out the demon his father had spent years to tame. With dark smoke oozing out of his eyes he responded.
"I said never"

MOONWALKER 2 [THE DARK MOON]

Chapter 20

Suspense tensed as Grodd appeared to be swept off his feet; He did not fathom his son would ever stand up against him because of an enemy. Dropping his hands down his side he approached Jason and landed his fist on his chin.
"Are you out of your mind huh? You've been spelled! Callias!"
Grodd turned to call an old stricken witch.
"Come, run a check on my boy, he has been spelled"

"My Lord your son breathes good air, he is alright"
Callias spoke from where she stood, she didn't need to come close.
"You've not even checked him yet?"
Grodd pushed on
"I don't need to my Lord, I can see that from here, he is perfectly fine"

"Then you must be a fool Jason, a big fool!"
Grodd turned back to Jason with red eyes and landed another slap on his chin, Jason had another plan, he needed his father to come close so he can snatch the staff he needed, and it was just as he planned, just as his father approached and slap him, he sped and snatch the staff.
"No!"
Grodd screamed out and zoomed after him. Through the woods, the grasses and plants gave way as the force of both speedsters rent them apart. The wind gathered behind their backs as they ran with the speed of sound. Soon Grodd began to catch up with Jason, but Jason was quick to slide past the gate of the refuge before it went completely closed for the night.
"Jason!!"
He screamed out in anger and attracted the attention of the knights guarding the gates.
"Who is there? Halt!"
The guards cried out and prompted Grodd to speed off.
***
"I am ready"
Jason got to the Simra's chamber panting with perspiration on his forehead.
"Easy kid, are you sure about this, I am sorry to say this but you might not come back alive"
Simra felt the need to tell him the truth. Jason looked to Kara and swallowed a lump of saliva down his throat.
"She saved my life, this is the least I can do for her, I will come back with the cure"

"Very well, it is written in the halls of history that only those with a heart of pure hard stone can see and touch the cure, no one has ever been able to describe just how the cure looks like"
Jason became a bit confused.
"What do you mean when you said a pure hard stone?"
Simra shook her head, she didn't have the answer to his question.
"That is all I can tell you, here is a map to guide you to the land of the fallen kings, by the look of things I think you have got just the morrow's nightfall to get back, else we lose Kara"
Simra handed over the map and went ahead to look for some magical items to help Jason as he journeys to his suppose death but on looking back he was gone.
"Jason? Jason?"
She hurried to the windowpane but there was no sign of the kid.
"May the spirits be with you"
She prayed.
***
Grodd paced in wrath, he saw his son as he sped his way to the land of the fallen kings. He saw him through Callias the witch.
He raged that he set the curtains around his Chambers in flame.
"Easy my Lord, save your strength for the girl"
Callias advised.
"Send the best fighters, the best sorcerer you've got and make sure Jason does not get the cure to that girl"
Callias chuckled, she wondered why it hadn't dawned on Grodd that his son might not make it back to the refuge.
"Is that really necessary my Lord? I mean no one has traveled to the land of the fallen kings and return alive"

"Are you saying my son would not make it back?"
The threat in Grodd's voice made callias lie.
"Of course not my Lord"

"Then do as I say old hag!"
***
Elias paced around in his Chambers as he waited for his spy to come back with a report. Soon his spy arrived with a perplexed face that it scared him a little.
"What is it? Speak!"
He firmly ordered when his spy hesitated"

"Am sorry my Elder, Jason travels to the land of the fallen kings as we speak"
Elias could not hold in the sudden urge to laugh, he opened his mouth wide and laughed heartily before he responded.
"Is the boy mad? Oh how love blinds the young who have seen nothing but the flowers that grow in the meadow"
Turning to his spy he continued.
"And the girl? I presume she breathes no air"

"No my Lord she lives, but barely"

"How is that possible? She should be carcass by now"
Elias found it difficult to believe the report his spy passed across.
"I am afraid it is true sire, I think the girl powers is the reason she still breathes"

"No no no, she has to die, if she doesn't die before sunrise send the assassins to finish the job. That girl can't live, I saw the vision clearly, I saw it, I even read it, she ruined all my plans, all my dreams and slit my throat in cold blood! She is my doom, she can't live, she has to die!"

[The dark moon]

Chapter 19

"Shoot her down"
Elias screamed from where he sat. The Archers got their bows ready and shot at Kara. Kara was hurt, hurt that despite everything she did to keep them safe, they still wanted to cause harm to her.
She raged with lightning and stopped the arrows in the air, swiftly she made a return back to the Archers. Just an inch close she stopped the arrows. Her strength began to fail her. She released the arrows and dropped to her knees, her meta state dissolved, blood dripped from her eyes.
"What did I ever do to you all? Why do you hate me so much?"
She screamed out before she fell and past out.
"Archers!"
Elias screamed again but this time Simon stopped it with a wave of his hands. Jason was just beside him, he whispered to Simon.
"Elder, She saved us all during the race, she doesn't deserve death, she is not a threat, she is our savior, please give her a chance"
Simon listened with a frown, he looked to Simra would have the same beckoning eyes and then his eyes went back to Kara who laid unconscious.
"Take her to your Chambers, we have an elders meeting by sunrise, for now, the competition would be put on hold until after the meeting"
Tension eased in the arena as Simon teleported out of the Arena. The host announced the competition remains pending until after the Elders meeting. Simra noticed the dark veins crawling up to Kara's heart, her eyes went wide, Kara had been poisoned! And not just with any poison, it a poison made out of a relic dagger.
She shook her head in disbelief that it caught Jason's attention. Jason had Insisted he tag along to make sure Kara is alright quickly asked.
"Is anything the matter keeper? Is Kara going to be alright?"
Simra was quiet. Jason was about to ask again when she shook her head in response.
"She won't make it"
Jason could not believe his ears, why would the mighty keeper be clueless on how to save Kara?
"Emm you said what?"

"You heard me, kid, she won't make it, the only thing keeping her alive for now is her powers trying to fight the poison, but it won't last for long. Now return to wherever you crept out from and say this to no one"
Jason could not tell what came over him at that moment, he could not tell how he became bold all of a sudden, but something burning inside of him would not permit Kara to die just like that, there must be something he can do; Kara risked her life for him, and she is in this condition because she did save him and every other person in her possession, he can't let her die.
"Keeper I am going nowhere"
Simra looked to his direction to look for an attitude but all she saw was a teen who is determined to ride to the ends of the Earth to find a solution.
"I am willing to do anything keeper, I am, just tell me what to do"
He went on with eyes brimmed with tears he couldn't control.
Simra took another look at Jason, she saw he had his mind made up to die because she knew the only cure to a relic dagger is through hell. No one no matter how skillful and powerful had been able to go through, they all lost their lives. Although she felt for Jason she had no choice, she had to give it a shot.
"You would travel to the land of the fallen kings, there you will find the cure"
Jason sat for minutes trying to process the thought but he wasn't making headways.
"That's it? No strategy? No plan, how do I get there? How do I get the cure?" Jason asked with concerned eyes.
Lia cleared her throat to get attention, and with a signal, she requested to speak with Simra aside
"What are you doing sending the kid to his grave?"

"I didn't ask, he volunteered, and am not going to sit and watch Kara die knowing that I had a shot in saving her but because of some petty reasons i didn't take it"
Simra left Lia back to Jason before she said anything else.
"Have you ever wondered why it is called the land of the fallen kings?"
She asked to see if Jason knew where he was going to.
"No, why?"

"Its a land where the firstborn of every kingdom was reduced to dust, it is also the land that gave birth to the relic dagger, in that land is where you can get the cure but the thing is it's only a myth, it is written in the book of history that there is a cure but no one has ever come back with it over the years"
Jason swallowed a lump of saliva down his throat, what is he doing? He thought he was going to die?
"Are you changing your mind kid?"
Simra read his thoughts and ask.
"No, no of course keeper, please hold on I would be back"
Jason requested and sped deep into the woods.
"Father! Father!"
He called and got the druids out.
"Yes son, give me some good news"
"Kara is hurt, she is dying"
Jason could see the smile that crept to his father's face.
"Good good, now you can steal her powers, now that she is weak, oh my, my dreams to rule this world has finally come. Oh, son, you have made me proud"

"Father I need your staff"
A frown appeared on Grodd's immediately.
"What for? You'll need the Gaelic stones to perform the ritual, not my staff"
Jason sighed, he couldn't tell what his father's next reaction would be.
"I am going to the land of the fallen kings to get Kara a cure"
Silence stood for a while and suspense tensed up, the druids began to whisper as Grodd stared at Jason trying to figure if his son has been spelled.
"Then you must be a fool Jason, a very big fool, you are growing affections for the girl? The girl must die"
Jason could not tell what came over him, he just didn't want Kara to die.
Without looking to his father's face he muttered.
"Father, if you lay a finger on her I would make you regret it"

MOON WALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 18

Zara roared with anger and whipped the assassin with its armoured tail into the storm. It went after Kara and made a shield about her to prevent the rocks from crushing her.
Jason and the rest of the racers who were safely in the arena witnessed the scene. Jason screamed out, he couldn't tell why he did, he still needed Kara, nothing must happen to her!
"Kara!"
He screamed and attempted to jump through the portal into the storm but Friya would not let him.
"Are you out of senses! Stay put!"
She held him back as he struggled.
"Let me go, I have to save her!"

"And how do you plan to do that? Huh? You are a priestess with unlimited powers?"
She questioned and looked for his response before she concluded.
"I guess not, Kara made sure you made it to Arena, so it makes no sense jumping into what she saved you from when you know you've got no powers to save her. If she is as powerful as she just showcased earlier on then let her save herself...that's if she can"
Jason had no choice to stay put, his eyes brimmed with tears as he watched the portal begin to close gradually.
Simra teleported to stand before the portal. There was nothing she could do, she tried to reach Kara through telekinesis but Kara was unreachable. She could feel the tears dropping from her eyes as she watched the portal continue to go faint.
"Come on Kara, please don't do this, you have to come out of this alive! Kara! Kara!"
She cried out. The whole crowd watched in silence, suspense stood firmly in the Arena. Simon could no longer sit, he stood up to see if there is any hope left for Kara.
Elias only smiled for a mission well accomplished. Kara can't live in the refuge if she is the priestess, he cannot allow it.
Kara continued to fall deep into the storm with her dragone who shielded her from any further hurt.
"Kara! Kara! You have to wake up now"
It was Sara, she could communicate with Kara now that she was close to the refuge.
Kara could not respond until Sara's voice became extremely sharp.
"Mum"
She communicated back still subconsciously.
"I can't, I can't move my body, I can't feel my powers"

"Yes you can, you have to fight this, I sacrificed all to make sure you breathe air, you can't make that sacrifice go in vain"
Sara continued.
"But mum i can't...I can't feel my powers, something is supressing it, I am dying"
Kara communicated weakly, she was dying, the poison has been prepared with the ashes of a relic dagger.
"You have to go *meta*"
Sara knew there was no other way out. Going meta would be dangerous for Kara at that moment given the fact that she has not evolved as a priestess but it was the only way out.
"How? What is meta?"

"It's a state your powers is tripled to full brim, whatever you can originally do in a meta state you can do triple of it! You are immortal in your meta state"
Sara explained, she could feel her connection with Kara go faint, it means Kara is either going too far from the refuge or she is near death.
"Kara? Kara! Channel your powers and think of your worst fear, your meta powers would be triggered once your body senses the fear of death"
Sara explained but there was no response from Kara.
"Kara! Kara!"
Kara was half way gone but she heard and responded
"Am here m...um"

"Zara should stopped shielding you, you would be forced into your meta state"

Kara commanded Zara to let go, it reluctantly did. A rock headed her way but just a breathe away her eyes opened with thunder and shone white. A force field erupted and caused a shield around her. Her hair turned white.
Sara's staff began to vibrate just beside her in the tomb and within minutes it dug itself out of the tomb and flew through the portal. Every eyes could see as the staff got through the portal. Simra immediately had hope
"Yes Kara, come on you can do this"
Elias had to stand up now. He knew what the staff stood for, Kara cannot make it out alive.
"The race is over, close the portal!"
He called out with red eyes!
Kara felt her bones boiled for extreme powers, it was too strong for her, she felt she is going explode. Her veins stood firmly and threatened to tear out of her skin.
The climate changed in the Arena. The clouds went dark with lightening. Kara began to oozed of lightening the moment she got hold of the staff.
On touching her dragone it roared and joined her meta state.
A sudden cold filled the Arena. Elias called out again when he noticed Simon hesitated.
"Close the portal Simon, the race is over, or you want some threat to walk through that portal. Don't you see what is happening?"
Simon saw reasons with him, if indeed a priestess' staff flew into the portal for Kara, then Kara is no doubt a priestess and a potential threat to the refuge.
"Close the portal!"
He called out
"Nooo!"
Simra screamed in disagreement but she was no match for Simon. He teleported and stood before Simra before she made a move to stop the Instructed knights from closing the portal.
But then just as the knights made a move to close the portal, a sudden lightening broke through the portal and sent them scattered to different directions!
The suspense tensed up, a sudden silence took hold of the Arena; With eyes filled with lightening Kara walked through the portal with the staff and her dragone by her side!

MOONWALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

Chapter 17

"Hold on tight!"
Kara advised as she took front and stood to lead the other racers. It was an intense storm coming their way. The clouds thickened to rocks and lightning struck continuously with the aim of striking every racer dead.
"Follow my lead!"
Kara screamed out as she made a force shield to give them a safe passage.
Soon the storm was just a breathe away, fear was written on everyone's faces, including Kara. They had never seen anything like it before, it approached them like a wild hurricane and many knew they stand no chance against this climate enemy, now they understood why in every race, only one or two people survive and some other time no one survives the race. They prepared their mind for death and Kara saw it on their faces.
"Guys! Guys!"
Kara had to scream to get their attention.
"Listen, we would get through this, nothing can stop us alright, not even this little storm, they sent us out here to die but we are going to prove to them that we are much more than that! That we are not just survivors, we are knights! Warriors! We would make it out for our loved ones, we have to! Who is with me!"
Sadly no one responded.
"Kara look out!"
Jason screamed out when he noticed a massive rock had escaped the impending storm to knock Kara off her dragone. But then, Kara was quick to split the rock in half with her mind, she took hold of both parts of the rock with her mind to prevent it from hitting anyone, steadily she took a turn on her dragone and sent the rock the opposite way.
They all watched with shock in their eyes, no one had witnessed such agility, such quick reflexes, such power, such strength.
Now Kara turned back to the racers and screamed out again.
"Who is with me!"
Without hesitation they all raised their hands, they trusted not just Kara now, but also the wonders her powers could perform.
"Now let's kick this storm butt!"
She ignited a fighting spirit in them. And watch then roar with confidence.
"Stick together! A triangle formation!"

"Who made her Commander?"
Friya questioned with a raised eyebrow.
"I think you would rather die here huh? If not then do as she says"
Jason corrected.
The racers obeyed and made a triangle formation, joining their hands together.
Veins stood visible on Kara's forehead as she created a force field to shield them.
The storm got to them now, the force of the wind was tough and was going to throw them off balance but Kara's hand on Jason transferred strength to every racer who joined hands together with him. They maintained the formation inside Kara's power shield.
Steadily they moved and then suddenly the star lead them to an opened portal.
They made it already!
"Come on! We are almost there!"
The star went through the portal and they could see the arena in the refuge!
"Hold on tight!"
The storm intensified, soon Kara's force field began to weaken at the force of the storm. The more they approach the portal the more the storm intensified.
"Kara! I am losing hold!"
Jason cried out.
"No no, hold on tight, she tightens her grip on his hand.
"We would make it, we are almost there!"
She said and threw Jason through the portal. Jason landed safely in the arena, the crowd roared with a shout of victory!
"Friya come on!"
Kara called as she stood at the entrance of the portal, she needed to make sure everyone goes through the portal.
"Come on quick!"
She was losing hold, blood began to drip from her nose, her eyes began to go dim.
"Come on...quick"
She called in a weak tone.
The Assassins were the last to go through, they knew they do not need to do much to make sure Kara does not go through, she was exhausted already.
The leader of the gang stood just by the portal, staring into Kara's weak eyes he took out his prepared knife he had soiled with poison and dug it into Kara's side.
Her force field dissolved, She gasped in pain and fell off her dragone into the storm...

MOON WALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

Chapter 16

Tension heated up minutes after Kara rode into the belly of the beast. But then, all of a sudden she made a burst out of the beast with Jason and his dragone with her. She rose up in the sky and let out an energy outburst that blew the rest of the beast to pieces, except one.
"This isn't Kara"
Friya said with a frown, she didn't want to believe what her eyes saw, Kara is a weakling, she has no powers, this person who has tore her way out of every beast isn't Kara.
"This way! This is the way out!"
Kara screamed out the racers as she pointed to the beast still standing... She figured it out, their way out is in the belly of the beast!
"Are you out of your mind Kara, you mean we should ride to our death.
Kara looked back to Friya who did not buy Kara's idea.
"Listen there is no time, more would come soon, you guys have got to trust me, the belly of this beast is the way out!"
For a moment, only the gentle roar of the dragones was heard, no one was willing to take the risk.
"I'll go with Kara, she just saved my life alright, and if anyone has an idea on how to get out of this dark desert or whatever it is called, please say something, if not then let's go with what Kara says"
Everyone remained quiet still, they were waiting for who to make the first move.
Soon Kara could perceive more beasts in hundreds heading their way.
"They are coming, more are coming"
She whispered to Jason and then turned to the rest of the racers.
"I'll go first!"
She said out loud and rode her dragone into the belly of the beast. Jason followed immediately. Few minutes later Friya followed but it was quite unfortunate for a good number of racers who were scared to ride into the belly of the beast. Hundreds of hungry and fierce beasts arrived and tore them apart.
Through the belly of the beast Kara rode and found an opening.
"This way"
She rode through it and came out in the open sky.
"How did you know that was the way out?"
Jason questioned.
"I really can tell, but my Instincts were so certain it was the way out, it felt like I have passed through this desert before"

"Hmm, have you?" Jason asked trying to get more information about Kara's powers.
"I can't tell, I have been in the refuge all my life...come on let's go, the star is still moving"
Friya found only two of her gang remaining, they were in the dark desert, her pursuit for Kara's downfall went dry. The multitude who started the race had been reduced to 10 racers!
Kara had a bad feeling, the race had been calm since after the dark desert, she knew something is wrong, and that something big is coming, she felt it so strong with her powers.
"Listen up guys, this isn't the end, this is a trick to catch us off guard!"
She stopped her dragone to talk to the rest of racers.
"So who made you queen Kara? You think you can order us around? How can we tell it is not you setting up all these traps. I mean how did you even know our way out of the desert was through the belly of the last beast standing? Who are you Kara? And what is your mission in the refuge"
Friya spoke out and erupted murmurs among the survivors, no one rode to finish first again, they understood it is not really a race with a trophy handed over to the racer who would finish first, it is about surviving till the very end.
"You can only trust her Friya, she just saved our lives, means she knows the way out of this suicide race"
Jason spoke to defend Kara.
"Right Kara? You know what and where we are heading to"
Jason continued as he threw the question back to Kara.
Kara was quiet, she sensed big trouble coming their way, some petty argument isn't what they should engage in now.
"We've been following the star, it tells us the path to ride, I discover the things I do based on my Instincts, now it's your choice to believe me and do as I say, I am not making it a must on anyone alright?"
Just as Kara dropped her words thunder rumbled, the clouds went dark, a sudden cold wind began to evolve in their midst.
"Kara what are you doing!"
Friya questioned immediately, she had witnessed what Kara can do, so seeing the sudden climate change means Kara was up to something.
"It isn't me, I am not doing anything, something big is coming, it's here"
The racers tightened their grip on their dragone, this was the last lap of the race, it was equally the most difficult, Kara could sense it.
"When do we strike commander?"
It was one the assassins Elias sent to make sure Kara do not make it back to the refuge alive. They had successfully disguised themselves as racers.
"Very soon, she would never make it back, Elder Elias made me swear with my life that she would not make it back, she has to die"

MOON WALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

Chapter 15

Kara was a little scared but her connection to Zara made her confident, she felt every ounce of it's strength, she knew what move it could make, how fast it could fly, it was like her being with wings.
"Bring her down!"
Friya called out, it turned out that she had a team of her own who had been instructed to bring down Kara.
Kara turned to see arrows coming at her. She touched her dragone and it teleported out of the way, a few unfortunate co-racers were not so lucky, the arrows brought them down, they fell into the mist, no one could tell where they fell off to, it was assumed they were lost forever.
Jason rode towards her and screamed to her.
"Shield up!"
She look to him and discovered his dragone had some iron armour all over it, she wondered how he could accomplish that.
_can we do that?_
She questioned her dragone, it replied her with a positive roar and so see screamed.
"Alright Zara shield up!"
Instantly a white tainted armour emerge from under it's skin and clothed it's body and that of kara's...
"Now that's better, watch your back Kara"
Jason said as he took another turn into the cloud mist...
Kara wasn't scared of the arrows that came at her anymore, her shield was impenetrable until she felt her connection with Sara go faint.
_Whats happening mum? I can barely hear you_
She lamented as she took Zara through a dark mist into the sky.
_You are no longer in the refuge Kara so..._
It was all she heard before Sara's voice faded off. It was just her and Zara now.
"We can do this Zara!"
She gathered her wits together and flew back to the war front.
Energy forces flew everywhere in the sky, and it seemed she was the primary target, although her shield was Impenetrable it didn't stop Friya from trying to bring her down.
"Zara, where are we?"
Kara questioned when she noticed beneath her was all filled with water, like a lake. She had never had in the history of a lake up in the sky.
Every racer held their peace as they sought a way out of their present bulwark.
"Look out!"
A kid screamed and watched as a giant beast swallowed up a racer leaving the spill of blood fresh on his clothes.
Within seconds Kara watched as many others got eaten up, their dragone were not left out.
"What the hell is happening? Where are we?"

"The dark desert Kara!"
Jason flew to stay beside her.
"How do we get out?"

"I don't know Kara, we can neither go forth nor backwards, we are stuck here!"
Jason revealed the bitter truth.

"So what? we just stay here and be eaten alive? There is surely a way out, we just..."

"Kara watch out!"
Jason screamed out when he saw a beast coming at her. Too late, the beast swallowed her up, but not for long, soon the belly of the beast began to heat up! Suddenly an explosion of energy blew the belly of the beast to bits as Kara sprang out with her dragone! Her eyes oozed of dark energy. Soon every beast got attracted to the energy oozing out of her system.
Kara was quick, she turned and held the beast with her mind. It drew the attention of many more but she was equal to the task! Her hair and her eyes shone white, the force field around her glowed with darkness.
"What the hell, Kara is a priestess?"
The racers questioned as they witness Kara tore every beast apart.
Zara released a sword into her grip from it's armour. She tore every beast apart even one which charged at Friya!
She stood on the back of Zara to stop the beasts but unfortunately one was able to get to Jason.
"Nooo!"
She screamed!
"Zara go!"
She commanded her Dragone and rode into the belly of the beast!

MOONWALKER 2¹
[THE DARK MOON]

Chapter 14

Kara was a little scared of riding her dragone, she didn't know how to ride, she has never ridden a dragone before, she stood with it as she watch the others get chosen by their dragones. The dragones pick a suitable match based on the desires of the heart. Friya got a vicious looking dragone, no one was surprised she did.
"Hey, you've got the eyes of everyone now, what a dragone you've got huh"
Jason drew near to Kara with a flashy smile.
"What can I say, I am lucky I guess"
Kara chuckled out.
"No Kara, no one gets lucky with a white dragone, it has special powers unlike the other dragone, only your mother Sara, has the record of a white dragone, guess you've broken that record"
Kara became a bit interested now. She never knew her mother had a white dragone too.

_mum is that true? Do you have a white dragone_?
Kara asked Sara without hesitation.

_Yes Kara, I named it Sieral, we fought great battles together_

_okay so where is it?_

_it won't be visible to the eyes of any being until I call for it_
Sara went on to answer Kara's disturbing questions.

_okay so when will you call for it?_

_when the time is right kara_

Jason had to touch Kara to bring her back to their discussion.
"Kara, hey..."

"Oh sorry..."
She apologized when she realized she had been staring at him without any response to all he said.
"So you were saying?"

"I was asking if you know how to ride, this is going to be one hell of a ride Kara, not many will survive this ride"
Kara's heart pounded against her chest, she could not tell what the race was all about, over the years all she witnessed were those who survived the race, they usually arrive battered with wounds and one time a few died minutes after they made it back to the arena, no one knew what it was all about, or what obstacle they would face.
_mum, I do not know how to ride_
Kara complained to Sara immediately.

_you can, all you have to do is connect with you dragone, give it a name_
Jason snapped his fingers again to bring Kara back to the physical world.
"You seem lost Kara, are you okay? Can you survive this ride?"

"I won't just survive Jason, I would arrive at the finish line first"
Jason chuckled softly, he knew Kara is not skillful enough to ride a dragone.
"I love your guts young lady, we would meet at the finish line"
Kara felt no need to say anything else, she simply offered a smile and climbed on to her dragone.
"I name you Zara"
She muttered and her dragone responded through telekinesis.
Kara's eyes went wide.
_mum, I can hear it, it spoke to me_

_of course it will, it would teach you how to ride, now Kara listen to me, Elias is plotting against you, he has assigned a few deadly knights to see that you do not survive this race_
Sara revealed to Kara, she could see and feel everything and every being from where she laid in a deep slumber beneath the refuge.
Kara's heart doubled its beat.
_Relax Kara, they are no match for you, I will tell you what to do, just be careful and trust no one, not even Jason_

***
"Alright warlocks! Gather around to the starting line!"
The host called when he was sure everyone had their dragone ready for the race.
"Now the rule is simple, get to the finish line before sundown, whatever you would encounter in this ride should be kept a secret, that is if you come out alive! You are to travel through the dark deserts..." He made a pause as if he felt he was revealing too much, murmurs erupted among the warlocks.
"The dark desert? Is this a ride or a mass murder?"
One of the teens said aloud with fear in his eyes.

"On second thought, all you have to do is follow this star"
He paused again to reveal the golden star that stood just up in the sky...
"where ever it leads is where you are supposed to ride past till you find yourself back here in the arena...if you find yourself back in the arena"
Friya shot an inimical look toward Kara when she noticed Jason picking a leaf from her hair.
"I am going to kill you, you daughter of the cursed!"
Friya said in her mind but Kara heard it, she swallowed a lump of saliva down her throat.
Apart from what she was going to face in the race, she was sure not just Friya but a good number of powerful knights, would do anything to see she did not make it.
"Ready!"
The host called to get the attention of the riders!
"Set!"
All hands tightened to their Dragone as they got ready to take off.
**You ready Zara?**
Kara questioned and got a response from her dragone, it gave a low roar.
"Go!"
A forceful wind swept the host off his feet as every dragone flapped its wings and dashed into the sky.
Kara was a little shaky, she was left far behind as she struggled to maintain balance on her dragone.
"It won't take long to get this freak eliminated"
Friya chuckled out as she flew past Kara.
_kara relax, don't fight it, connect with your dragone, you do not have to use your physical strength to ride your dragone, you use your mind_
Sara instructed and Kara stopped the dragone from flying for a moment.
She placed both her hands by its neck and soon light began to radiate from eyes till it made a spark, her eyes shone white and so did the dragone.
"Yes am in! Now go, Zara!"
Zara let out a loud roar as it spread its wings! With the speed of lightning, it took a spin and speed past every other dragone within minutes.
Friya could not believe her eyes, she was not going to watch Kara take the front.
"Oh, it's game on Kara!"
She took out her arrow, aimed and shot at Kara.
"Zara down"
Kara called, she could feel every ounce of power vibrating in her system, she could feel everything, even the heartbeat of her dragone, and so when Friya shot the arrow she heard it as clear as a key falling to the ground.
Her dragone obeyed swiftly and twisted downwards to dodge the arrow.
Looking back Kara witnessed every rider bringing out their weapons, she soon realized that this wasn't a race, it was war!

MOON WALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 13

"Give me some goodnews kid, I want to hear it"
The druid led down his hood to reveal the large scar inflicted just below his eyes.
"I want to hear her scream in pain, huh son, I want to inflict her with the same pain her mother Sara Inflicted on me"
Grodd spoke with voice of vengeance, his eyes were stony red.
"Easy father, we would have our revenge, but it would be delayed because the girl is too powerful, I was able to take her powers but it was too much for me, I almost lost my life in the process, it shut down my organs and almost stopped my heart"
Jason expressed his concern in the quest for vengeance, if he was going to help his father achieve his vengeful dreams then stealing Kara's powers is the only way.
"Hmm, we would need to sacrifice more souls to perform this dark magic, you need more energy to..."

"No father, no..."
Jason would not permit his father to finish up.
"No, no more blood shed of innocent people, I would think of another way"

"And what way is that? Indulge me"
Jason smile evilly before he replied
"Love, love is the way to get Kara, I make her fall in love with me, and in her weakest moment we strike"
***

The loud bells of the refuge rang continuously in every quarter and hall.
The general hall is packed with students dressed like warriors on for battle. It was the first day of the competition. Simon had to address the crowd before they move to the arena.

"Dear ones, now is not the time to look back or be faint in heart, now is when you prepare your mind for the inevitable, now is when you prepare your mind for death, if you have to say your goodbyes to your friends then you do that now..."
He made a pause as he searched amongst the contestant for Kara.
"Where is Kara?"

"Here sire"
She popped her head up for him to see, she wasn't dressed in any armour that it bothered Simon.
"You are not dressed in an armour, you are really prepared to die?"
He didn't know if it was sudden sympathy he felt for Kara or he was scared of what her power outburst would look like.
"I won't be needing it sire"
A sudden giggle started up in the hall that later resulted to a lot of persons laughing their eyes out. No one believed the feeble Kara would last a minute.
"Okay then, let the battle of the warlocks begin!"
Simon announced and with a shout the crowd opted for the arena.

_mum what does the competition entails?_

Kara communicated to Sara

_i have no idea Kara, but whatever it is, we would be ready_
***
"Warlocks, gather around!"
The host called and led the warlocks to an open barn just by the arena.
"The first part of this battle is a race"
It didn't sound difficult to Kara until the statement was completed.
"A race in the sky, with your chosen dragones!!!"
A roar from the crowd proved they were all excited but it was not same for the warlocks, a good number of them had fear in their eyes. The dragones looked hungry and fierce.
_Mum you heard that?_

_I did, trust me you are going to enjoy this_
Sara communicated back.

"So go on and chose your dragones"
Kara was going to rush in but Sara stopped her.
_easy Kara, you do not chose a dragone, a dragone chooses you, if you rush in you might get eaten up, it's a trick, be wise_

And it was just as Sara said, Kara watched as three warlocks got eaten up by the supposed dragones!

"No way! I can't do this!"
A kid cried out and attempted to run for his life but he was shot dead with an arrow.

"Is there anyone else who would want to run away?"
The question came just after the kid laid dead.
"There is no turning back warlocks, pick your dragone and prepare for the race"
The host called out again but Kara would not permit anyone else to be eaten.

"Wait, wait!"
She took front and stood in front of them.
"Get out of the way scared rat"
Friya spoke mockingly but no one laughed this time, they were all visibly scared.

Kara ignored Friya and went on
"Wait guys, if you go in there you will all be eaten, you do not chose a dragone, a dragone chooses you, watch this"
Kara was not sure of what do when she took the lead and stood in front of the barn.
_what do I do mother, they are all watching me_

_simple, open your mind and call for your dragone, it would come to you_
Sara replied.

Kara shut her eyes and opened her mind, within minutes a loud roar was heard in a distance up in the sky, her dragone was not in the barn. Suddenly a white dragone landed with a force that blew off the barn.
The dust had to settle for the crowd to see Kara handling with the white dragone.

"Is that a white dragone?"
The murmur erupted all over the arena.
"A white dragone?"
Simon muttered from where he sat.
"Do you know what this means?"
Elias spoke up next...
"It means the girl is not just a seer, but a priestess, only a priestess has the power to command a white dragone, she has been deceiving us all these years, we have to make sure this girl do not survive this competition!"

[The dark moon]

Chapter 12

Back in Simra's chamber Kara sat with worried eyes as she observed her distance from Jason. She could not explain the zap of energy she felt each time he comes too close to her.
"Jason, what is going on with you?"
Jason understood what she meant but he felt she asked the wrong question.
"Me? Nothing Kara..."
There was silence till he continued.
"I am just drawn to you, I can't explain why, it has always been like that, there is something about you I can't explain"

"Means you are threat..."
Kara did not hesitate to conclude.

"But we were together in the dungeon Kara, nothing happened, why now? Would you want me to stay away from you after everything?"
Kara understood what he meant, she felt bad immediately, Jason has stood by her when she had no one, it would be unfair to judge him like that.
"Okay I am sorry Jason, but there should be an explanation for this right? I would love to ask the keeper but we are not in good terms for now"
Silence stood for few minutes until Kara spoke up again.
"But emm Jason? Can you try to observe a little distance for now, you know emm... Emm like anytime we meet, just try to observe a little distance, the shock I get is very uncomfortable, I would not want to feel that anytime soon".
Jason giggled although Kara felt it wasn't funny

"What's funny?"

"No nothing, nothing, I'll try but I am not sure I can for long, your lips is not helping the situation my lady"
Kara felt a little shy and embarrassed when she noticed Jason has been staring at her lips. She flushed and cleared her throat before she stuttered out.
"What's? What's...that supposed to mean Jason?"

"It means your lips looks soft and warm, I wonder who has had the privilege to touch those lips, he is one lucky guy you know"
Kara found her mouth open with no words coming out. Wait, is Jason flirting with her? How does she tell him that she has never been kissed before, it felt embarrassing.
"Your mouth is open my lady"
Jason reach for her jaw and again the energy zapped but this time it was different, it traveled down her spine to her center of gravity to erupt a strange feeling she had never felt before. Now she understood what Jason meant when he said he was drawn to her, because at that moment she was drawn to him, it felt like a rope kneaded together.
"Emm Jason, I think you are straying....past your boundaries, it took less than a minute to cover the distance between us, what happened to your promise to try and observe a little distance"
Kara said when she realized her.
Jason was going to say something but Lia butt in when she walked in.
"Jason, that would be all for today, I would love to speak to Kara alone"
Lia said and watched as Jason found his way out.
"Kara..."

"Lia nothing you say would stop me"
Kara had to spell it out to Lia before she made the move to say anything.
"I know, the competition starts tommorow and I want you to be extremely careful, some folks play dirty, you have to be wise and play smart, I pray the spirit be with you"
Kara responded with a nod and offered a quick smile, she was tempted to ask after Simra but she changed her mind.
"Alright little one, you need to rest, it's a great day tomorrow"
As soon as Lia stepped out, Sara communicated to Kara.
"Kara, I have a bad feeling about the boy Jason, you have to be careful"

"Why mom? What's wrong with him, he has been good to me"

"I know, but be careful child, I am reading a repulsive energy from his veins, he has powers I cannot place my hands on. Remember he could easily swap your powers, in my time it took Gaza, the raelic stone and a group of wizards to take my powers. But he could do that with just a touch. He is not what he says he is, be careful"
Kara felt her mom was over reacting but she conformed to Sara's wish anyway...
"Alright mom, I will"
***
Through the morning fog, Jason sped with the sped of lightening, the birds of the air fled out of their resting place as he sped with a strange lightening trailing him. He stopped deep in the woods. Soon beings in a hood stood all around him until he stood face to face with a Druid. The druids were magical creatures who sort after dark magic for selfish purposes.
"How are you son, and how is the girl"
Jason had good news and with a smile he revealed.
"Everything is going according to the plan father"

IRE continues...

Puppy was now by the door to the room and had continued her insistent barking.
Angry at the noise the dog was making, he suddenly rushed to where she stood and kicked her very hard in the stomach area, making her stumble backward and fall flat on her back. I screamed as I watched the pregnant dog begin to whimper in pain. I vividly remember the pure agony which was on her face and how I shared in the pain of the dog, forgetting my own situation at that moment.
He suddenly grabbed my wrist and pulled me towards him. I fought his grip
strongly, demanding that he let me go or I would scream. All my threats fell on deaf ears as he just went on to tug the knot of my wrapper. At this point I started pleading, crying loudly and telling him I was sorry and he should forgive me for whatever I may have done to offend him.
He looked possessed as he finally got my wrapper loose and pushed me roughly on the foam. I made to run but he dragged me by the hair, slapping me so hard that I fell back on the bed with a loud thud. Slowly, he began to take off his clothes, his eyes not leaving mine all the time.
“Why are you doing this to me?’’ I cried.
His reply was to ignore me and continue the process of taking off his clothes.
“Forgive me if I have wronged you, please don’t do this to me” I cried.
Now he was completely unclad and started coming towards me where I knelt on the foam. I was quick to notice the look of sadness that briefly crossed his face before his features immediately changed to one I had come to dread. He held my face in his large hands and stroked my chin softly.
“You look so much like her”, he whispered in awe

“Like who? Who do I look like? Is this because of her? Please tell me”, I ranted amidst loud sobs.
“Oh my pretty child, I do this because I love you”.
“If you really love me, please do not do this to me”.
The foam creaked as he lay on it and pulled me close. I closed my eyes as the tears kept wracking my body and I began to struggle against him again; kicking and fighting his grip, but my tiny nine-year-old body was no match for him.
“Oh my child, do not fight me. I do love you”.
His voice was so soft and very frightening at the same time. I shuddered amidst the sobs.
He lay on top of me and held both of my hands tightly together with his own large ones, scratching me with his nails in the process.
“Scream for me” he commanded.
I had no choice.
The pain which seared my body as he forcefully entered into me was one which I was never to forget in my life.

It happened every single night after that day. He told me I looked so beautiful, like his favorite wife.
He told me that whenever he made love to me, he believed it was the same as making love to his favorite wife.
Once, I had been a normal nine-year-old girl, who was interested in the things little girls are interested in; looking good, having on beautiful hair, wearing lovely attires and so on. I had once been bursting with so much energy, ready to take on the world with my sharp mind. I loved listening to stories and playing with my friends. I used to laugh then, but now even I cannot remember how my laughter sounds.
I snapped back to reality, in time to see Mama starring to dish out the food into large bowls for each of the wives to serve her children. She carefully dished Baba’s food into his special bowl and I covered it to carry into his hut as usual. Getting to my father’s hut, I knocked and waited for his reply.
“Wole”, His voice boomed out to me.
I stepped into the room and placed the bowl of food on the table.
“Should I serve your food, Baba?” I asked in a low voice.
“After…” he answered. “Go on”.
Nodding my head, I moved to the door and locked it behind. Baba sat on his bed, a small smile playing on his lips as he watched me. Slowly, I removed my clothes until I stood naked in front of him. I gingerly walked closer to the bed and lay on it, immediately shutting my eyes.
Even with my eyes closed, I could feel his eyes roaming my body, purposely making me wait for his touch.
I never cried anymore.
I never screamed or made even a single sound.
I have come to enjoy his touch, more than any other thing in life.
Finally, he stood up and removed his clothes, immediately getting on top of me.
A few seconds later, he was inside me, slowly moving in and out of my body.
Soon after, I was moaning. My moans matched his groans, he moved faster, raising my legs up and pounding harder into me. In one loud groan, he emptied himself into me, leaving us both panting.
When my heart rate had settled a bit, I stood up and started wearing my clothes which lay discarded on the floor.
“Did you enjoy yourself?” he asked.
I did not answer the question immediately, as I continued wearing my clothes. I looked up at him, he was wearing a contented smile on his face and his naked body lay sprawled on the large bed.

I walked to the door and opened it. Turning back to look at him one last time, I finally answered his question.
“As always”.
And I felt so ashamed of myself, that it was the truth.

The end..

[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 11

"Kara! Kara! You defiled my orders, you disobeyed my instructions! Who gave you such temerity! Who?"
Simra rage when they got back to the Chambers, her eyes were red with wrath that Lia felt she was going to tear Kara apart.
Kara was quiet, she had never seen Simra in such rage before so she thought it wise to remain quiet.
"Kara! I asked a question, who made you sign up for the competition, you have never disobeyed my orders until now"

"No one, I signed up myself"
Silence stood in their midst for a while before Simra sighed and made her conclusion.
"Then you leave me no choice"
Kara could not tell what Simra had in mind but Sara could see as Simra reached for the necklace she hid underneath her sleeves.
"Kara, she has the canvan necklace, she wants to keep you locked up without powers again, if she does that I can't communicate with you anymore"
Sara revealed and Kara asked immediately
"What do I do?"

"Stop time, and make the canvan bracelet melt off"

"I can stop time? Wow"
Simra threw the necklace at Kara, the canvan necklace was design to cleave to her neck the moment it was released but everything slowed down till it all became stiff. Lia and Simra remained in one position, the necklace remained stiff in the air and Kara was the only person who could move, she had stopped time.
She looked intently to the necklace and made it melt off before she released time from her grip.
The shock on Simra and Lia's face made Kara laugh, she shook her head and reinstated her will to win the competition.
"I would win the competition Simra, I do not even have to struggle, I know what I am doing"
But it was not enough to convince Simra. She teleported to Kara and attempted to teleport her down to the depths of the refuge where she had Sara buried in a tomb but Kara heated up and she became to hot to touch.
"Ahhhhhhh"
Simra screamed as her hands burned up when she tried to touch Kara. She would not stop there, she harnessed her energy and created an energy blast, huge enough to blow Kara to dust.
"Simra stop, you will kill Kara!"
Lia called but Simra was determined to stop Kara no matter what.
Kara was a little scared when she saw the volume of the energy blast Simra created.
"Take your stand Kara, and redirect her energy back to her"
Kara nodded and stamped both her feet on the ground, it emanated an energy field around her, a strange wind began to tear the Chambers apart.
Simra could barely see as the wind around Kara made her vision blur but she knew which direction Kara was and so when she was done creating her energy she threw it at Kara.
Unfortunately the energy bounced back when Kara's forced field seemed to strong to penetrate.
Simra's eyes went wide as she saw her energy return back to her in a greater force, she was sure it would either cripple her or send her to her early grave. She only used such amount of energy on a formidable enemy.
Kara knew Simra might not survive the hit. She had to do something fast, she made a move, she could not tell if it was time she slowed down or if she was moving too fast. She dissolved the wind and sped to move Simra out of the way.
But then energy got to her, she stood her ground and absorbed the energy but it was too much, she bled from her nose and fell unconscious.
***
"Hey, hey" Kara could feel someone tap her, she could barely see but the green coloured eyes that had sparks in it gave her the intuition that it was Jason.
"Up up, you've been sleeping for quite some time lady"
He was full of smiles and Kara found it a little irritating.
"What? They sent you to talk me out of my decision to participate..."
Jason would not permit her to drop her thoughts he quickly interrupted
"No no, Kara, not at all, as a matter of fact I am a little glad you opted to participate, but still I am scared for you girl, you sure about this?"
Kara was going to reply but Jason's hands met with her arm, a sudden zap of energy shook both of them that Kara had to spring up.
"What was that?"
She asked as she panted.
"Who are you? Please stay away from me"
***
Simon was seated observing his usual meditation when his spy, Eric, came with his report. His voice was shaky and in haste.
"Sir, the girl has powers, powers I have never seen before, I saw her withstand the keeper's stage five energy blast, a blast that is intended to blew her to dust sir!"
Simon sprang to his feet with wide eyes.
"Are you sure about this?"
He asked in disbelief.
"I swear with the spirits sir, the girl powers is out of this world, no one can comprehend such power sir"
Simon was quiet until Eric pushed further to ask.
"What are you planning to do sir?"
Simon did not hesitate to answer.
"Now we make sure she participate in the warlock's competition"

CHAPTER 10

"I am not out of my mind, I meant every word I said, I am going to participate in the warlock competition this season"
Kara repeated her initial statement to prove she meant every word she said.
The warlock competition is a seasonal battle amongst the students to chose who gets to be recruited to the knights of the refuge.
"Kara quit the joke, the competition is a show of strength and powers, you won't survive a sec in the ring, you don't have powers remember?"
Lia chuckled before she spoke out, she concluded Kara was joking about her intentions to participate. All Kara did over the years was to watch the competition from the stands. The kids she grew up with in the competition were all knights already, she began to guess Sara wanted her as a knight of the refuge.
"I am not joking"
Kara said with a Stern face, her hands folded as she shot a look to show she is serious about it.
Lia's laughed went dry, she looked from Simra to Kara countless times before she spoke to Simra.
"Simra I think she is serious about it"
Simra was quiet, she wanted to pry through Kara's mind but Kara remained impenetrable.
"You are not participating in that competition Kara"
Simra gave the final verdict and gave no more room for Kara to protest when she teleported out of the Chambers.
Kara did not hesitate to push for her will to participate, she waited till the day of the general hall assembly, where all the students assemble to chose between a blue and red cloth shredded into bits. The blue Indicated no participation and the red indicated an interest and an Immediate entry into the competition.
As expected Friya was was first to come out to pick from both cloth, she pick the red and a dropped it at the feet of Simon as it should be.
Every other person followed suit till it got to Kara's turn. No one took her serious because they all expected her to pick a blue cloth as she had done over the years. But this time it was different, she picked the red cloth. Immediately every elder stood to their feet in shock; Simon's mouth stood wide upon as Kara took a few more bold steps and dropped the cloth at his feet.
"I hope you know what you are doing mother"
Kara communicated with Sara. The eyes that stared at her were not friendly.
"I am, trust me"
Sara gave a comforting reply.
"Oh well look who it is, the outcast without powers is participating in most dreaded competition of the refuge, what does she think this is, a food party?"
Friya spoke sarcastically and loud enough for everyone to laugh.
Simra could not believe her eyes, kara defiled her orders and went ahead to make her entry to the competition, this could lead to her death, is she mad? immediately she stood to her feet and spoke out to Simon.
"Sire it is suicide for a kid without powers to participate in the warlock battle, would the head elder accept such entry from a kid who is helpless?"
A sudden silence enveloped the hall, everyone waited for a word from Simon. Simon had two thoughts in mind, this could finally be the opportunity to reveal the truth about Kara's powers to the general public, or this could be the suicide as Simra has claimed, but there is nothing he could do about it, Kara has to participate.
"There is no law that says anyone without powers can not participate in the competition, and so if it is true that kara has no powers then I offer my sympathy and my condolences to you Simra"
Simra knew exactly what Simon meant when he said he is offering his sympathy and condolences, he knew Kara would not make it out alive.
"Sir I beg you, offer the kid a chance to rethink her decision, maybe she is confused about it"
Simra hurried to Simon's feet and knelt as she pleaded.
"Okay Simra"
Simon obliged and looked back to Kara who stood with folded arms.
"Kara, the warlock competition is not for the faint of heart, it is not for the weak and the soft. You may not make it out alive and so i am giving you this last chance to rethink your decision, go back and make your pick from the cloth again"
Kara did not look to Simra face, she ignored as Simra called to her with her mind.
"Kara you better pick the blue cloth! Don't be foolish!"
She knew Kara could hear her but it fell on deaf ears. Kara went ahead and picked the red cloth and this time she placed the cloth on Simon's hands.
"Sir I was not joking when I dropped the red cloth at your feet, and I do not need anyone's sympathy, I made this decision and I expect the elders to respect it"
Kara spoke with boldness that erupted murmurs in the hall.
"Alright Kara, you have been enlisted in the warlock competition, may the spirits be with you"

[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 9

Simra felt it was time to opt for Kara and Jason's release from the dungeon. She gathered her wits together and approached Simon to request for the teens' release.
"Sire if I may ask, why is Kara and the boy Jason still in the dungeon, it's already 24hours without proof of Kara being a threat"
Simon was quiet as he continued his meditation, he was seated with his legs crossed and his eyes closed.
"Sire..."

Simra didn't care if he was in the middle of something indispensable, her demand was paramount to her, she needed Kara out of dungeon that minute.
"Simra you can have her, now can you leave me to meditate?"

"Of course sire"
Simra bowed and left but immediately she stepped out, Simon called for his most trusted ally.
"Eric, follow her and monitor Kara's every move, report to me if you notice anything strange"
***

"Kara!"
Simra called as she approached the dungeon.
Kara could recognise it was Simra's voice. She tapped Jason who was still asleep
"Jason, Jason, get up, the keeper is here"
Reluctantly Jason sat up and yawned to indicate he was famished.
"Kara, up you get"
Simra said the moment the guards opened the gates for Kara's release.
"You to boy"
Simra indicated as she turned to Jason, quickly she took hold of both teens and teleported them to her Chambers.
"Jason, I would love to speak to you"
Simra said and took the boy aside.
Kara saw it as an opportunity to communicate with Sara again.
"Mum? Mum?"
She said in her mind
"I'm here"
Sara replied.
"How do I find you Mum?"

"I can't tell you where I am a now because I was spelled here by magic, it has prevented me from discerning my exact location but I can see and feel everything in the refuge and beyond, like I can see the elders in a meeting now discussing about the yearly warlock competition which is to start off in a week's time, you would have to participate in the competition"
Kara didn't find the idea interesting.
"I don't think that is possible, I can't participate in such competition without my powers, and remember I can't use my powers"
Sara was quiet that Kara felt she had lost connection with her.
"Mum?"

"Kara you have to participate, there is a reason for it, I will explain to you later, I would guide you on how win"

"Mum where have you been, I mean you left me, you abandoned me right? Like for how long have you been in my head?"

Kara did not understand how Sara just popped up from nowhere to tell her what to do.
"I never abandoned you, someone did this to me, someone i can't reveal to you now, and I could recently connect with you because your powers was let loosed. Something prevented me from connecting with you for years, I believe it's the canvan bracelet"
Kara was quiet when she notice Simra approaching the Chambers.
"Where is Jason?"
Kara was quick to ask when she noticed Simra came back alone.
"He would be back Kara, he has a special connection with you, I can sense it, he would be..."
Simra made a pause when she noticed Kara without the necklace, her eyes went wide open.
"Kara?"

"What?" Kara made a frown with her face as she asked trying to figure out the reason for Simra's outburst.
"Kara?" Lia came in next, she hurried and hugged Kara with laughter reverberating in the Chambers
"I thought I was going to lose you dear one"

"No way Lia, you won't, I am right here"
Kara ignored Simra for a minute to assure Lia.
"Lia, Kara is without the necklace"
Simra announced, Lia took a few steps backwards to take another look at Kara.
"How is this possible Kara?"
Kara acted like she did not denote what they meant.
"What? I learned how to control it"

"How?"

"I don't know, I guess I figured it out on my own"
Simra did not need to think twice before she replied Kara.
"You are telling lies Kara, I can sense it with my mind, remember you can't lie to a keeper"
Kara's heart missed a bit, Sara had warned that she must not reveal to anyone that she could communicate with her.
"Kara, she is reading your mind, you have to lock her out"
Sara instructed and Kara did just that.
"Stop pushing me out Kara" Simra called out.
Lia stood transfixed at both Kara and Simra, she could not tell what was going on.
"I am not doing anything Simra"

"Liar, you are pushing me out of your mind"
Simra was clearly stressed, veins stood firm on her forehead while Kara seemed more relaxed with folded arms.
"Maybe you should not be in my mind, it's my mind right? It's supposed to for me and me alone"
Kara continued with a smile.
"Simra you are bleeding"
Lia announced when she saw blood dripping from Simra's nose.
Kara successfully pushed Simra out of her mind before she went to say
"And emm, I am going to participate in the warlock competition next week"
Both Simra and Lia looked to each other in shock and then back to Kara before Simra spoke out
"Kara you must be out of your mind"

IRE

Everybody looked forward to when it was our turn to prepare the meals, although no one will ever admit it.
I knew this was another reason the other wives hated my mother; the first reason being that she was my father’s favorite wife.
Or used to be, until he found another favorite.
I watched as mama moved to the large pot where water was boiling and started scooping the yams into the pot; not bothered with the steam coming from the boiling pot of water. After she had poured in all the yams, she brought out the gallon of red palm oil and poured a sufficient quantity into the pot.
Next, she took the plate of already chopped onions and sprinkled them into the pots with her hands, using the long wooden spoon to turn the yams so that they spread in the large pot. She covered the pot and sat back on her chair to start peeling the many pieces of blackfish, whilst waiting on the yams to get soft. I quickly joined her in the task before she asked. I particularly loved this part of cooking, because many times mama would give me little pieces of the fish.
My mind went back to that day, six years ago; the first time I helped my mother in the kitchen, and the first time she gave me a piece of fish for my hard work.
It was also the first time it happened.
The first time I experienced torture in the hands of someone who was supposed to protect me.
***
On the day of the dreadful incident which was to forever alter my life, I had just come out of the bathroom and was alone in the room I shared with seven other sisters. Before I saw him, I sensed I was no longer alone in the room and I stiffened. I turned swiftly, my senses alert, ready to run from an intruder if need be.
“Oh,” I said with a breath of relief, on seeing the person ‘’I thought it was an intruder. Do you need anything?”
“Oh no, no intruder Ire, just me,” he said, “but I do need something, yes that I do”.
He took a step closer to where I was, but I just smiled, relaxing after my brief but ominous thoughts of doom.
“What do you need? I am always here to help you”.
“Are you really?” He asked with an edge to his voice and took another step
forward, eyeing me from head to toe.
At this point, I became aware of myself. I was yet to put on my clothes and still had only my wrapper on.
“Okay I will come to you immediately I am decent”.
I waited patiently for him to acknowledge what I had said and made a move to go outside.
He smiled.
By now, the puppy had begun to bark loudly and uncontrollably, which made me a
little uneasy.
“No, that won’t be necessary my child”, He smiled at me again, but that smile unnerved me more than anything he had done or said that evening.
The whole house had gone to attend one of the biggest wedding in town. It had been the talk of the town for weeks but I, unfortunately, could not go because I had suddenly started purging and mama decided it was best to stay home.
A thought suddenly crossed my mind.
“Why are you not at the wedding?” I asked suspiciously.
He chuckled but said nothing.
I suddenly realized I would need help because the man before me looked
dangerous. This man whom I have trusted and admired with all of my heart since the day I was born. Now he looked like a stranger.
And even though I was very young and innocent in the ways of the world, I knew exactly what he wanted at that time.

[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 8

"What do we do Jason? I...am scared"
Kara shivered, she could tell with the look the Griffin shot at them that it was out to kill.
"It's going to kill us"
She continued trying to get Jason on his feet but Jason was too weak to stand on his feet.
"You will have to take back your powers, now or..."
Jason was not able to finish what he intended to say, he past out with blood dripping from mouth.
"Jason...Ja.."
The Griffin would not permit Kara to say anything else. He grabbed her by the neck and sniffed her continuously to discover she was not his target, she was powerless.
It's attention turned to Jason with haste, it flung her aside and picked Jason up with it's mind.
"Kara...Kara"
Kara could hear the voice in her head, it was clear and direct.
"Who is there?"
She asked in fright thinking it was the Griffin playing with her mind?
"You have to fight it Kara, you have to get your powers back else you are both going to die"
Kara felt she could trust the voice in her head, it was the only option she had at that moment.
She looked to the Griffin who had already dug it's teeth into Jason's neck, sapping every ounce of powers it could. The more it absolved the more it grew bigger!
"Kara it's me, your mother Sara, you have to trust me and get your powers back"

"My what? How?"

"There is no time for questions, now look to the Griffin so I can see it, you are my eyes"
Kara quickly looked back to the horrific creature.
"Now look to the tiny hole that glows just beneath it's spine, can you see it?"

"Yes I can see it"
Kara confirmed
"Hurry what should I do? It's killing Jason"

"Dig your hands into that hole you see now"

"What? I can't..."

"Do it or die, your choice, chose wisely"
Sara's voice came so firm that it sounded like the only option left for Kara. How she could hear her mother in her head was a mystery she was going to solve later, her who she felt abandoned her for dead. Now she had a problem to solve.
Quickly she hurried and dug her right hands into the Griffin. It let out a scream that alerted the guards outside the prison walls.
Immediately Kara's powers returned to her.
Her eyes went dark, the clouds thickened to form an ice... The foundation of the refuge began to shake.
"Kara you have to control yourself"
Sara's voice rang in her head.
"I can't, I can't control it!"
She screamed as veins stretched up to her head.
The Griffin in it's anger grab by her neck and held her against the wall but soon it's hand began to burn up as Kara set it on fire with her mind.
"Halt! Halt demon!"
The guards could barely see what was going on in the dungeon but they could see the Griffin burning in flames.
"Kara you are going to explode, cause a darkness so you can shield yourself from the guards"
Sara's voice came again..
"How do I do that?"

"Simple, just think of it"
And she did, total darkness covered the whole refuge that the elders took lamps and hurried to the dungeon to see for themselves, now they would have proof to show the whole refuge, proof that Kara was a demon.
"Kara direct your energy to the Griffin, think of killing it"
Sara's voice directed and Kara made the Griffin dissolve into Ash.
"Good, now close your eyes and take a deep breath, relax and say these words. *Glueth arisa tiarisa quickum*"
Kara began to recite it and slowly she could feel her powers subsiding
"Hurry and say it continuously, the elders are on their way here, sit down and cross your legs"
Kara sat and placed both her hands on her thigh as she repeated the words till she felt light. Her powers became calm.
"Now touch Jason"
She did and Jason inhaled and regained consciousness. It was all like magic to Kara.
"Now make these Ash of the Griffin disappear, teleport it out of the dungeon so the elders would not have evidence against you"
Sara instructed next.
"How do I do that"

"Like I said before, all you have to do is think, your powers would do the rest"
Kara stretched her hands over the burning Ash and it varnished the next second.
"Clear up the darkness and sit back, the elders are at the gates already"
Quickly Kara sat back with Jason and she made the darkness clear up.
Simon teleported to the dungeon immediately the darkness cleared up, but he was a little late, all he saw was Kara and Jason seated like nothing happened.
Without saying a word he teleported back to his Chambers, he knew he had to released Kara and Jason, he had no evidence against them, the guards in charge of the prison swore the saw Kara lit the Griffin on fire but there was no proof to second their accusations.
"Mum where are you?"
Kara asked when she was sure it was just Jason and herself, Jason gave her a suspicious look but she didn't mind.
"I am right here in the refuge, Kara, you need to find me"

IRE (Short story)
AUTHOR: Fassara Zuwa Hausa

I hurriedly walked to the cooking house, not wanting mama to call me a third time.
A third time meant a knock on the head and my head was still hot from the last knock. I got to the cooking house and placed the yams beside mama’s feet and crouched next to them. Next, I picked up a knife and started to peel. As I did this, I remembered the first time mama had given me the chore of peeling and cutting up yams for porridge.
I was nine years old at the time and had just begun to help my mother with the preparation of the family meals. I had messily cut up the yams; peeling good yams away and what was supposed to be large neat cubes of yams came out in a shape even I could not describe.
“Take a look at the yams you peeled, Ire’’ mama had said slowly, very slowly, “and tell me what you think about them’’.
I didn’t need to look at the yams before I answered, but I did anyway and said the first thing that came to my mind.
“They’re ugly mama”, I whispered in a teary voice, already dreading the
punishment that was to come “I’m sorry mama”, I quickly added.
She ignored the second part of my statement and latched on the first.
“Oh so you even know that they are ugly? Do you know how much yams cost in the market? Have you ever seen me cut up yams like this?” she bombarded me
with questions.
I wanted to remind mama that we planted yams ourselves on our large farm and it was more than surplus, and also that this was my first time of cutting yams so it could not possibly be perfect; but I held my tongue and stared at my feet. Mama inevitably gave me her signature knock, telling me that the essence of yam
porridge was in the well chopped yams and properly shaped yam cubes. After that day, I noticeably improved in yam cutting and after several knocks, I became as perfect in the chore as she wanted.
I turned back to the task at hand; within minutes, I had peeled all six tubers of yams perfectly and cut them all up into large neat cubes. I cleared my throat.
“Mama I am done”, I said.
“Took you long enough. Go and fan the flames”.
I stood up and walked to where a large pot was resting on the firewood stove. I picked up the plastic hand fan and began to blow the flames. I coughed when the smoke got into my throat and my eyes began to water at the sting. Of all the household chores, I hated this the most.
Finally, after several minutes, the flames responded and caught on; rewarding my efforts with a healthy fire. I breathed a sigh of relief and stepped away from the fire, awaiting new orders from mama.
It was our turn to prepare the family lunch and mama took her time, as always, prepared to impress with her cooking. Although the other wives were superior to mama in many things, mama was very much superior when it came to cooking.

MOONWALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 7

Simon caressing the necklace around Kara's neck made Simra shiver where she stood, she knew Simon would definitely pull it off and of course hell would let loose the moment he does.

"If I may cut in sir"
All eyes turned around to see Jason who stepped out and stood before Simon.
"And who said you can kid?"
Simon's question erupted murmurs in the hall, they all wondered what gave Jason the guts to stand up to Simon.
"What is wrong with him? Is he mad?"
Friya whispered to katherine, a member of her crew, Katherine simply shrugged her shoulders and stood on her toes to see the end of the scene, she was equally flummoxed.
Jason knew Simon's question was meant to shut him up while he still had the chance but he was not ready to stand back.
"Sir with all due respect I would like to know the purpose of the refuge again and it's code of conduct, cos as far as I know it is for teens like us who have got nowhere to go and most importantly who have got powers, or is that not the case here sir?"
Silence enveloped the hall, Jason had a point, why is Kara being punished for having powers if the purpose of the refuge is to shield those with powers and teach them how to use it for good.

"Kid you are right but...."

"Then why is Kara treated like an enemy? Why has she always been left out, ostracized, bullied at even when she has done nothing wrong! Why do people call her a monster when she is the one that is being hurt, no one shows her love, no one shows her care, we all hate a person for things a prophesy said? The elders would kill an innocent girl who has shed no blood? What is the purpose of the refuge then? To kill the innocent?"

Jason walked towards Kara and picked her jaw with his finger to lift her face to him, she was in tears.
"Look at her Sir, if in the future she actually becomes a monster then it would be our fault"

"How dare you! How dare you, you peasant! You bastard! Throw him in the dungeon!"
Elias stood up in wrath.

"No, the kid has a point, he has been blinded by the pretense of the girl, they all have, they don't know that beneath this innocent crying face is a terrifying monster, if you would allow me to show it to you Jason"
Simon said and turned back to every other person who stood in the hall.
"If you would allow me to show it to all of you, the monster she really is"
With that he teleported back to Kara's side, shoved Jason from holding her and pulled off the necklace.
There was a pause of fear on everyone and Elias was eager to see just how Kara would show the crowd how monstrous she was.
Few seconds turned into few minutes and then more than 20 minutes but nothing happened, all that was heard was Kara sniffing and sobbing.
Simon felt disgraced and embarrassed.
"Guess I was right after all"
Jason last words lit up the anger in him that he slapped a tooth out of Jason's mouth
"Throw them in the dungeon, this meeting is dismissed"
He said and teleported into his Chambers.

***
Simra returned to her Chambers where Lia was waiting impatiently for some good or bad news.
"Simra? What happened, where is Kara?"

"In the dungeon, the elders are yet to decide her fate"

"Oh no, they discovered she has powers? She is doomed Kara, don't you think it's time to bring back Sara? She would die if Sara is..."

"They did not find out, they did not find out about her powers"
Lia made a pause and then squealed for joy before she noticed Simra was still pensive
"What's wrong, you are supposed to be happy right?"

"Lia, Simon took off her necklace and nothing happened"
Lia allowed a questionable frown on her face before she asked.
"Is that supposed to be a problem, maybe she knows how to control her powers"

"No, Kara cannot control her powers just yet, something must have happened, and I can not think of anyone but the boy, Jason, he is special and we need him"
Lia thought for a while and discovered she could not figure anyone with the name Jason and so she asked.
"Who is Jason?"
***

"What did you do Jason, I made it clear the other day that you should Saturday away from me"
Kara said as she sat with Jason in the dungeon, her face buried in her palms.
"What? I can't believe you would say this right now, after I just saved your ass"

"I didn't ask you to Jason, I was ready to make them pay, all of them, for what they've done to me"

"And how to do you propose to do that? You can not control your powers just yet, I felt it, it's like a boiling water ready to explode inside of you, if it was still in you the moment Elder Simon removed your Necklace all you would do is explode and boom, you are dead"
Kara lifted up her head now to take another look at her saviour, he is an handsome teen indeed, just that now he was bleeding, her eyes went wide as she called out
"Jason you are bleeding"
Jason touched his nose and realised blood was dripping from his nose.
"Dammit, it's your powers, when I touched your Jaw I swapped my powers with yours, it's the reason nothing happened when the necklace was removed, now your powers is tearing me up"
Kara hurried to him when he lost balance and fell to the ground.
"What do I do Jason?"

She asked in fear.
"You would have to take back your powers, but if that happens, you would loose control, and I have got barely some few minutes before your powers shuts down my system completely"

"What does that mean?"

"It means I'll die Kara, and the moment I die your powers comes back to you, either way you are getting your powers back"
Kara looked up to the gates of the dungeon when she noticed a shadow cast upon them. She could not tell she knew the creature coming towards them is the most monstrous creature she had ever seen in her entire life and she could tell it was not coming for good.
"Jason, we've got company, big company, big problem"
Jason laid on his belly to see the Griffin approaching them with red eyes.
"Oh no no no, it's the Griffin, we are so dead Kara!.

MOON WALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 6

Kara laid for some few more minutes when a few guards barge into the Chambers.
"You've got no manners? this is the keeper's Chambers, show some respect!"
Lia charged both hefty men who appeared like men set for war.
"We're sorry about that, the elders has requested Kara to stand before verdict hall"
One look at Lia's expression revealed that the hall of verdict is nothing good.

"She can't now, she is not feeling well"
Lia tried to make an excuse but the guards would not cooperate.

"Am afraid we can't do anything about that, she has to come with us"

"Give me a minute to get her ready"
Lia slammed the door and stood behind it for a while as she sighed several times.
Slowly she sat beside Kara and held her hand.
"You have to be strong Kara"

"Why do I feel this verdict hall is the end for me"

"Listen kara, you have to be strong, really strong"

Lia was whispering now and it made Kara a littke scared.

"Whats going on Lia, what will they do to me?"

Lia was quiet, but she soon realised her silence would waste more time. She held Kara's right hand to her chest, looking deep into her eyes she whispered.

"No matter what happens, no one must know you have powers, guide that secret with your life, its the only thing keeping you alive"

Kara didn't get the opportunity to ask more questions, the guards forced their way in and picked her onto their shoulder...
It didn't take more than a few seconds, Kara found herself in a large hall, standing face to face with the elders. The guards had teleported her to the hall to avoid anymore delay.
Her eyes skimped with fear burning in her veins. She noticed Simra in a square court box, it was obvious she was under questioning.

"Simra, care to explain, or should i say feed us with the lies you spilled earlier?"

Elias, one of the elders said the moment he saw Kara standing before them. Elias had never liked the idea of kara staying in the refuge, he had raised the suggestion that kara be killed to avoid the fufillment of the prophesy.

"As i said earlier, the girl is innocent and she has no powers whatsover"
Simra replied without looking to Kara's direction.

Friya's scoff made Kara realise she was not alone in the hall, looking behind her she saw the whole school standing behind her to see how the elders would decide her fate.

"Kara! Do you swear before the elders and the entire refuge that you've got no powers?"
Simon called to Kara who was obviously trembling.

Simra would not look to Kara's direction but she hoped kara would not spill the secret, it would be the end for her if the elders discover she has powers.

It took few minutes for Kara to reply

"No sire, right from my childhood i have been without powers and the whole school knows that"

"Liar!"

It was Elias again

"You've been hiding under the shadows of Simra, you are the reason a Griffin is in this school, plus only a priestess has the power that controls the weather, it is you!"

Turning to Simon he called out

"We should execute this witch before its too late!"

Simra began to regret her decision to bury Sara in a tomb beneath the refuge, she would have been a good bonus to shut the entite refuge, she sincerely hoped kara would not be discovered else she would be executed immediately and it would definitely be the end of the refuge, because whenever or however Sara wakes up, she would rain thunderstorm on everyone of them.

"Silence Simon"

"Where were you when the school was enveloped in darkness?"

Simon next question proved technical, kara intelligently fathomed they must have checked Simra's chambers during the incident to discover she wasn't there.

"I was out in the woods, the keeper had sent me to fetch her some herbs"

"Deep in the woods we've discovered a massive explosion of a force that blew the trees around it to bits, only the powers of a priestess can do that Kara"

Simon stood up now when he noticed kara shiver.
Within seconds he teleported and stood before her.

"Maybe all this while Simra had found a way to keep your powers hidden until she figured a Griffin is out for you, you know the only reason we kept you in the refuge was because Simra assured us that she had gotten rid of your powers"
The hall was quiet, no one could predict Simon's next move.
Kara could hear her heart throbbing so fast against her chest.

"Perharps she found a way to surpress your powers instead of getting rid of it, perharps its a canvan bracelet, but i can't find any attached to your wrist, except this necklace that has never left your neck"

Simon hands went to carress the necklace.

"Tell me, what would happen if i pull off this necklace?"

MOON WALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 5

Simra was expecting an explosive wrath with the way Kara's hands tightened to a fist. She was apparently flummoxed to the extent she paced a little before she resulted to an impending exclamation.
"What? You are joking with me right?"

"Funny it took you almost 30minutes to reply"
Lia chipped in before Simra continued.

"No Kara, I am not, we have to teach you how to use your powers but no one must know you have powers, it must be a secret"
Kara stood with folded arms, her forehead had a confused frown, she was obviously looking for the right words to say; she could not tell what she actually felt at that moment.
"Kara we have to start now, I would be taking you down to our secret training Chambers, you..."

"Wait, wait, wait"
Kara interrupted now.
"All my life I have been ridiculed and deserted because you led me to believe a lie? Like you've utterly destroyed my life! You made me believe I was a freak without powers, I got bullied by my mates, ostracized by every kid in the refuge and now one day you just pop out from nowhere and you are like, Kara you've got powers, you need to start training..."
Accidentally a disbelieving laugh escaped Kara's lips.

"Are you fucking serious now? And you think I would just jump at the stupid idea and start your training? What are you both thinking? That I am a puppet?"
Simra had no words to keep Kara so she watched as Kara turned to leave. But, Lia was not going to let that happen. She magically drew Kara to stand before her and took Kara's right hand.
"Alright let's skip to the part where you die if you don't learn how to use your powers. Give me you other hand, I'll show you something"

Lia went ahead to hold Kara hands when she hesistated and showed her the kids murdered by the Griffin in a flash.
She went on to open up a memory of the past when she encountered a Griffin and how it horribly slew everyone who attempted to save her until she had to save herself by taking to her heels.

"What the hell is that!"
Kara shook in fear when Lia was done.

"That? That is what is coming for you! So you better skip all the pet talk and get to work if you want to live in the refuge for the next 24hours! Whatever the keeper did, she did for your own good. Now if she says it's time to evolve, you do just as she has said, understood?!"

Kara didn't realize when she subconsciously nodded to Lia. She knew no one likes her guts in the refuge, but she surely didn't want to die just yet.

"Okay okay"
She laughed nervously and continued
"Well I don't know how to start with this, I still don't feel like I have powers, I feel so ordinary..."
Kara felt awkward when both Lia and Simra looked to each other with suspicious smile.
"Well you are about to find out"
***
Deep beneath Simra's Chambers, Kara stood in a well organized training room. Kara was a bit flummoxed giving that she never fathomed there was a secret threshold that led to the training room, a threshold that had been in her room for years.
"So what now?"
She asked when Simra was done changing her clothes into an armour.
"Now you take off your necklace"

"Why my necklace? You said it's for my protection"

"Yes it is, but now you have to take it off"

"Why do I have a feeling that this is a bad idea?"
Kara stalled a little

"Come on kid take it off already, we don't have patience for this"

Slowly Kara's hands went to the back of her neck and surprisingly she noticed Simra and Lia getting set for battle.

"Why are you both acting like you are about to fight a demon?"
Kara stalled again

"Oh Kara get on with this already!"

"Okay okay"

And the moment the necklace came off Kara froze.

"Kara?"
Lia hurried to her.

"She is burning up, what's going on?"

"Let her be, her powers has been locked in for a long time..."

Kara interrupted when a sudden wind began to revolve around her. The clouds went dark and her eyes glowed with darkness.

"What is hap-pening to me"
Kara stuttered, she was writhing in pain, like a force was trying to split her open.

"Kara calm down, take a deep breathe, this is normal, you just have to control it okay, calm down"

"I can't, I wanna scream!"

"Oh bloody hell, Simra if she screams we are all toast, take her elsewhere please"

One look at Kara proved what Lia said was actually going to happen.
Quickly Simra teleported her out of the refuge into the woods and gave the go ahead.

"Now scream Kara, scream!"

Dark veins welled up to Kara's forehead, she knelt to the ground, the grasses around her dried up, darkness oozed out of eyes and blood dripped from her nose... And with all the strength she had left she let out a scream, the trees around her vibrated and exploded to bits...
"Kara!"
Simra called when it was getting out of hand.

"Control it!"

"I can't! it's tearing me up!"
She cried...
The dark clouds overshadowed the refuge, no one could see a thing, the elders summoned an emergency meeting with lamps as their means of light.

Simra had no choice, she magically fastened the necklace to her arm; exhausted she fell to the ground, the clouds cleared up and the head of the elders, Simon, called in rage
"Summon Simra now and that witch of hers, Kara!"
He knew only Kara had the power that affects the weather.

Kara woke up 24hours later to notice Lia sitting beside her.
"Where is Simra"
She asked

"Emm, she has a query to answer before the elders"

"Is it because of me?"

"I'd rather not talk about that now, she would be back soon, you have to rest"
A minute of silence had it's way until Kara questioned again.
"What was that?"

"What was what?"

"What happened to me, is that the power I possess? A power fueled with pain?"

"Oh Kara, what happened yesterday is nothing close to the power you possess, when you evolve the refuge put together cannot stop you"

Kara eyes went wide open
"Okay that's scary, I am scary"

"No it's not, don't you get it Kara, you are a goddess, there are many who will kill to have your powers, it's the more reason you have to be prepared, because your battle has begun..."

MOON WALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]

CHAPTER 4

Kara still had a suspicious look on her face, she ensured there was a reasonable gap between herself and Jason, she didn't understand the waves that burned through her when he touched her, plus she didn't want to have the odd feeling again.

"Are you scared of me? I just want to be your friend"

Jason went on when he noticed Kara was trying to keep her distance. She was quiet, strangely quiet that he felt he made the wrong move when he decided to come talk to her.
He was about to excuse himself when she called.
"I don't know if you are here to mock me like the others, there is something strange about you"
She didn't want to explain that she felt some connection to him, she felt he might read a different meaning to it.
Jason sat back now, but before he could utter any word Kara's nightmare, Friya, arrived the scene with her gang to bully Kara as usual.
"What is this thing doing with you Jason?"
She pointed out with disgust.
Kara held her forehead, she had always tried her best to avoid friya; Friya always made life miserable for her in the refuge, she knew quite well that once the issue gets to Simra, Friya might get kicked out of the refuge, but she felt it was something she should handle on her own.
"Friya please, let her be"
Jason came to the rescue but it wasn't enough to appease the blonde.
"Look here bitch, Jason is mine and mine alone! You think a powerless freak like you can have him?"

"Friya you can have him alright, can you please leave me to think?"
Kara was getting tired of the situation, she hated herself anytime Friya came around.

"Is that the respect I taught you? Huh?"
Friya was a vampire, she had speed and of course super strength. She sped and picked Kara by her neck.
"Friya enough!"
Jason tried to stop Friya from doing anymore damage but he was no match for the vampire, she waved him metres away with her other hand and picked Kara off the ground as she strangled the life out of her.
Her fangs were out to do more damage when Gabrielle, a member of her supposed gang called out.
"Friya, that's enough, you are gonna kill her"
Kara was a bit surprised when Friya listened and threw her to the ground.
Jason was nowhere to be found when she looked out for him so after she spat on Kara she left unsatisfied, she still felt Kara deserved more than what she got, Kara should know she doesn't belong to the refuge, that she is a curse!

"Are you okay?"
It was Jason, Kara could not believe Jason would hide, she actually thought he had some supernatural powers that he could use in defending himself.
"Why didn't you do anything, you are powerless too?"
Jason smiled a little, he stretched forth his hand and touch her forehead, instantly all her wounds healed up.
"No I am not, they call me the copy"

"What's that?"
Kara asked when they both sat back.
"What's the copy"

"I can copy any supernatural powers and use it for a period of time. Like now, when I healed you, it wasn't my power, It was yours"
Kara shot him that disbelief look before she made a scoff and replied.
"I don't have powers mister, if you are here to mock me then just say so and for the record I just met you okay, I really don't know what you want from me, please...please just stay away, I don't want anymore trouble"
***
Three days after was the night of the full moon; Simra was summoned by the elders, the unspeakable has happened.

"Explain this Simra, this castle is meant to be a place of refuge not an harbour of evil"
The elders complained as they stared at the lifeless bodies arraigned in a row just by the entrance to the elders Chamber.
"It must be the girl, the evil girl, the curse has started, we are all doomed"
More complains arosed as the physician inspected the bodies.

"This is darkness, a dark magical creature called the Griffin"
Micheal the physician called out to Simra as he carried out his inspection.
"Why would a Griffin come after the refuge?"

"One thing, the priestess... The priestess moon light powers is the only reason a Griffin would be here, but the confusing thing is the Griffin is no match for the priestess and the priestess is certainly not here, except there is another person here with the powers of a priestess"
Micheal went on and Simra could only think of one thing, Kara is in grace danger!

"Simra what do we do? It's certainly going to come after her and Kara cannot defend herself, we can't help her either because we are no match for a Griffin"
Lia complained when Simra was back in her Chambers.
Simra was quiet as she paced to and fro.
"Simra?"

"Quiet Lia I am thinking"

"Well there is no time to think, the Griffin is going to kill more children and eventually get to Kara"

"What's coming for me?"
Kara walked into the scene with questionable eyes.
With a sigh Simra drew Kara close with her mind and brought her to sit.
"First Kara you need to know that you are the most powerful being on this planet"
Kara made an attempt to talk but Simra was quick to hush her.
"Second you should know your life is in danger, it's time you use your powers"

A DATE TO REMEMBER (LAST EPISODE)

"Hahahaha, you think I would let you go easily? I will always be your nightmare, you cannot deceive me like the others and go free. None of them survived!" Kelechi swallowed hard and tried to concentrate on his footing but Pearl was coming at a blistering pace, she was already accustomed to the bridge. His cut was bleeding effusively and he felt sickly. Quickly, he tore the shirt she had given him and used it to wrap the wound. "No! You bastard!" She called out rancorously. "That was my dad's best shirt! No!!!" And with those words Pearl forgot her remaining sanity and pursued him without concern for safety. Kelechi knew he was never going to see another sun rise if she got to him and with that knowledge he left the support of the rails and quickened his pace. He was just about jumping to solid ground when he heard screaming and a loud splash and turned just in time to see Pearl hitting the bottom of the canal. "Help me! Somebody! Help please!!" He thought about going back to save her, she was a human too after all. But he was too weak, he had lost a lot of blood. He staggered on into the night, only tightening the strap around his arm, until he heard with relief the raspy shouts of a bus conductor: "Campus gate!! Campus gate!"

It was eight minutes past eleven when Kelechi alighted from the bus that had brought him back. He didn't bother collecting his change from the driver, he wasn't even sure he had paid the fare as he stumbled towards the gate, fighting terribly hard to maintain his balance. "Who be that, show yourself!" He recognized the voice as that of Mr Audu's, the school's most revered night guard. He slowly raised his left arm, trying to shield his eyes from Audu''s luminous torchlight. "Abi you deaf? Identify yourself now before I use this thing for your body!" Audu belligerently barked, brandishing a wide wooden stick. He was known as a no-nonsense person, once he had single-handedly caught three robbers who had invaded the school's bakery, but Kelechi was too weak to say anything. The stocky figure of the night guard was now within reach and Kelechi collapsed just as his hands touched Audu's trousers.
He would live, at least he believed so, but the memory of this scar would never leave; he would never be the same again.

MOONWALKER 2
[THE DARK MOON]
CHAPTER 3

Simra had succeeded in convincing Kara that she was left behind, her parents grew tired of her liabilities, they had to leave her in the care of the refuge, it would be too dangerous is she lives in the open world.
It's been seven years and Kara is more of a teen who has been ostracized by every other teenager. They were scared of her not because she flaunted any supernatural powers but because her eyes were outlandishly dark. They nicknamed her the weak devil; the weak devil because Simra had succeeded in constraning her powers with thousands of canvan bracelet heated and made into a necklace.
"Never take this off my child, it would protect you from unseen harm"
She had always reminded Kara.

The teachers in every class of the supernatural were a little puzzled on how to fix Kara. She had no powers whatsoever. She was kicked out and transferred from class to class until eventually they insisted Simra would be best to handle her.
"I am useless Simra, it's the reason my parents left me, I am too weak, I'm a total liability"
Kara said one evening, during her martial arts class with Simra. She was the only who calls Simra by her name and somehow Simra didn't mind.
"No you are not Kid, you are special, very special, a rare breed that has never existed on the surface of this planet and beyond, you are the first and last of your kind..."
Kara rolled her eyes when she heard the same old story Simra had always said to her. It was of no use, she knew Simra was trying to make her feel better.
"I get it Simra, you are just trying to make me feel better, look at me huh"
She made a gesture with both hands on her waist.
"Look at my eyes, I am nothing but a freak without powers, the other kids call me a weak devil, they treat me like an outcast! I have no one!"
The canvan necklace began to radiate, her powers that had been locked up for a few years were obviously bobbling and posing to let loose, but the necklace was the only bulwark standing in it's way.
"You have me Kara, you always have me, I will always be there for you"
Simra could remember how the elders had criticized her decision to keep Kara.
"Are you mad Simra? Of all the kids you chose her? The girl is a demon, she would destroy us all! You of all people should know that, you know the prophesy, you know what it says!"
The elders had lamented bitterly and pushed for Kara's execution but Simra stood her ground and insisted no harm must come to the lad.
"We can't murder an innocent girl based on a prophesy! Leave her in my care, I would train and bring her up the right way, besides if we lay any hands on her, you know the priestess would burn this place to the ground" of course no except Lia knew Sara, the priestess laid beneath the castle.
After much deliberation Simra won but was thoroughly warned to keep the lad in check.
"They are jealous of you and the special treatment I give to you, you are the most beautiful girl in the refuge, I am not saying this to make you feel better"
Kara chose not to give credence to Simra's reassuring words, if she is as beautiful as Simra claims then she should be adorned, not ostracized.
Things changed when one evening someone touched her shoulder. His brown hair covered part of his eyes, his eyes were astonishly green, he was just like her father.
"Hey, emm, am Jason"
She could not tell if he meant good or if he was going to mock her like the others, but there was this strong connection she felt the moment he touched her shoulder, every fiber of her being reacted to his touch, there is something about him she could not explain and for a few minutes his right hand was left hanging till she realised and shook him.
"I am Kara"

"Kara you are beautiful"
Kara was at first pissed but then, she saw the sincerity in his eyes, he was saying the truth, she heard him say it but his mouth didn't move, he only stood in front of her smiling nervously. Wait? Did she just read his thoughts? But she was told she had no powers?

"Emm, I have been watching you for a while now and emm, you are always alone..."
Kara didn't see the need to reply him since he was stating the obvious.
"Sorry can I sit?"
It was a short bench and the moment he sat his his shoulder met with hers and once again her body shivered and heated up at his touch.
Questions began to build up in her mind.
Who is this guy? And what does he want from her?

A DATE TO REMEMBER (4)

"Hey we're here!" The all too familiar voice cut into his thoughts again. He had been thinking too much that evening and feared Pearl probably might have sensed his discomfort. He chided himself, he had to act relaxed. Nobody knows what could be up the sleeves of an angry Pearl. " Wow! Nice home, I love it! Your father built this?" He asked, surprised at the brick-solid composure his voice held. "Nooo. First, he's my stepfather, a devil's reincarnate can never be my dad. Second, his father was the one who built it before passing it to him when he died. Abi shey lazy people dey get house?!" She rhetorically asked in pidgin English, the first she’d ever spoken to him, before bursting into laughter after he shot her one of his killer smiles. He wondered how she managed to laugh and effortlessly make it seem so real. "Come on, make yourself at home, I'd be back with a towel for you soon."
Kelechi subconsciously nodded as he lowered himself into the seat nearest to the door. He chided himself again. If he was to successfully play this game of pretense, then he had to up his dramatic skills as well as juggle his memory. She had never made the dislike of her stepfather secret, she’d even told him she would tell him something really nasty about the old man when they eventually met. Kelechi at the time had been pleased that he was winning her trust to the extent of her promising to tell him family secrets but now he didn't care about her old man anymore. All he wanted was to live out the remaining forty minutes left for the time to read 7pm without any significant hitch before he bade her goodbye.
Soon she returned with a towel, a shirt that two persons of his size could fit into perfectly and a hot cup of tea. "Drink this, it should reduce the cold. I'm sorry I've not mastered the art of hospitality, yet." She smiled and Kelechi returned the smile before taking the cup and settling it on the table. His body involuntarily shook. "Here, manage this. Pull off your wet shirt and put this on. By morning your shirt should definitely be dry. It was my father's, I still keep some of his personal possessions with me, they remind me of him." Kelechi didn't know which part of her statement to gawk at. The fact that she wanted him to put on the cloth that had been worn by a dead man or that she actually had thoughts of him staying overnight. He almost spat out a
tufiakwa but regained his composure quickly to fire back a deft response. "Hey Pearl. I really appreciate your hospitality but I won't be able to stay over. Your mum is just in the next room and your dad, pardon stepdad, should be home soon. I wouldn't want to look an unbefitting in-law already. He grinned wildly as he said this, noticing with outright chagrin that his smile had actually been sincere but her response was to take him unaware.
She started sobbing uncontrollably and before Kelechi knew what was happening, she had burst into a wail. She capriciously chucked the television remote controller she had been holding and flung herself to the ground, with her feet hitting the mahogany table and spilling the hot tea all over. "Oh no! You're just like them all! I thought you were different, I thought you loved me, but you only deceived me. Oh no! Oh Kelechi!! Why?!" She wailed on, swinging her hands forth and back in reckless abandon. Kelechi was stunned. In fact stunned wouldn’t effectively describe his state then, he was dumbfounded. He thought about bolting through the door and running his way to the comfort of his room but remembered that she was holding his phone. She had used the torch to search for the shirt she gave him, plus thoughts of how he was going to navigate his way past the death trap of a canal while running worried him. Did she suffer from bipolar? Was she schizophrenic? Was she battling with mental issues. These and many more plagued Kelechi's mind as he bent to console her. He was already crying himself, he wondered what his parents would be doing at this time. Probably, settled in the dining table for dinner. They always had dinner early, his father would be regaling his mum about his day's experience and an enviable hearty laughter would engulf them. Pearl's shrilling wail brought him out of his reverie.

"It's okay Pearl honey." The sound of the word honey suddenly disgusted him. "You are the only one I love and I won't ever deceive you. The one reason I have to leave is because I have a test by 7am tomorrow morning and I can't afford to miss it, but I'll make you a promise." Her countenanced changed and she stopped crying, lifting her face expectantly. Kelechi mentally scanned through several promises he had used on other of his catches but couldn't find any that would aptly suit that moment. "I would be back tomorrow morning once the test is over, I promise, trust me." He said the words with such pain and sadness that he was sure she would realize they weren't meant but she just widened her eyes. "Are you sure? If so, then it's okay. But you would still stay till nine before you leave." Kelechi nodded. At this point arguing with her could prove disastrous. She got up and handed him her dead father's shirt which he hastily took. They then settled on the couch where she brought out her phone and started showing him her chats with other guys. He opened his mouth in shock at some and for others feigned a hearty laughter. He was scared to ask her for his phone.
Suddenly she looked up. "Aren't you bored? I don't feel alright. Hold on and I'll be back." Kelechi nodded again, it had become his default response to all her statements. As soon as she left he got up to search around for his phone. He looked everywhere but couldn't find anything. He decided to climb a stool to check the top of the wardrobe but the squeaking sound of the stool attracted her. "What are you doing honey?" She rushed back into the room, but by then he was already on the couch, his buttocks just managing to touch the soft surface of the cushion as she came in. "Nothing at all, I've been here waiting for my darling." She eyed him suspiciously then smiled mildly.
By now it was already totally dark outside. She brought out a brown substance and poured it into a wrap which she rolled in two places and handed one to him with a sinister smile plastered on her face. "Have this. Let's smoke our love hotter." Kelechi was agitated. He had been experiencing mixed emotions that night but never expected to feel the way he felt then. Whether she was dumb or mentally unstable, he didn't care, he was never going to smoke tobacco to satiate her mental desires. He resolved at this point to find a way out of his mess. "Pearl, no. I don't smoke, but I'm not against you smoki..." He didn't complete the sentence, the glittering knife she sprung from behind her stopped the words in his throat. "Smoke this Kel!!" He took the wrap slowly with regrets etched all over his face and lighted it. "P, don't do thi..." "Don't force me to use this knife my friend! Smoke it!" Kelechi couldn't hold it then. He burst into tears as he lifted the round paper to puff a smoke, choking terribly as the smoke entered his lungs. "Wawuu!!! That's my man!" Pearl was jumping and clapping, definitely this was a demon who had escaped from the abyss, he reasoned. She kept jubilating though, dancing, shrieking and jumping all in one single movement and in one impetus split-second action, Kelechi pushed her and ran out.
The rain outside was blinding and he didn't even know where he was running to, all the landmarks he'd noted suddenly weren't familiar, still he ran on. He was wearing only one half of his pair of socks, his shoes scattered about in his haste to escape. He felt a sharp pain somewhere around his arm and checked to see a big knife cut, obviously he had not only left his phone behind but had also injured himself. He didn't care though, all that mattered was finding safety. He was still running at a very fast pace and there were no lights anywhere where he could seek help. Suddenly he sighted the canal, the precarious death trap. He exhaled loudly and made a sign of the cross as he realized he was close to the bus-stop. Catching himself subconsciously praying to God for survival, something he had never done except on Sundays during church worship sessions, Kelechi shook his head in obvious disappointment. He was approaching the bridge now and decided he was going to offer a thanksgiving in church if he survived this day. However, just as he got to the middle of the bridge, using the slimy rails to support himself, he heard that terribly familiar voice from behind again.

A DATE TO REMEMBER (3)

Pearl looked back and smiled. This time her smile wasn’t as welcoming as earlier. "That place is called Ugbi's death trap . A lot of people have reportedly lost their lives there. It is even rumored anyone who attempted rebuilding or repairing the bridge didn't live to see three sunsets." She sardonically smiled again as she pulled the straps of the umbrella and closed it, by now the rain had reduced to drizzles. Kelechi quavered. What had he gotten himself into, he mused. He imagined what would be happening back on campus. Perhaps Mr. Innocent, his Business Law lecturer whom everyone disliked for his superciliousness would be rounding off his class. Twice he had been humiliated by the man in class and that was why the decision to abscond from his lecture wasn't difficult to take.
He remembered the first time vividly. It had been raining that day also. He had gone to return his matriculation gown back to the student affairs division where he loaned it from. A clear warning had been given that anyone who failed to return the gown at the slated expiration date would not only have to pay the full cost of the gown but would also serve a compulsory after-school detention for two weeks. He had waited till the last day to comply, people like him couldn't afford to struggle with other students on long queues. As soon as he walked into the class Mr Innocent had directed him to come to the front of the class. He remembered how he had walked timidly with apologetic eyes, he was still innocently green. He had explained the reason for his lateness to the lecturer but Mr. Innocent wasn't known for his magnanimity. He had stood him in front of the class throughout the duration of the lecture and even when he begged to be excused to ease himself, the slowpoke had only laughed and made mockery of his tacky, non-fitting dress combination. He had even called him a fashion misfit and the class had laughed raucously over the joke of the slowpoke, though he was palpably now the slowpoke. He chuckled slightly as he thought about the seamless reversal of roles, something he had always exceled at during his time with the drama unit back in high school. Oftentimes he was made to simultaneously perform dual roles, and he fulfilled every expectation with perfection. However this current play he found himself starring in was of a totally different kind.
His mind returned to the present. They were passing a big structure now which he recognized as a religious building. He squinted his eyes to read what was written on the sign board just outside the building. He had been taking mental notes of all the landmarks on their way to Pearl's home from the bus-stop. There was this lingering ominous air that clung tightly to him and he wanted to be readily prepared for the worst case scenario. Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses . He gaped as he thought of his bible study conductor. Her name was Miss Emily and just during the past weekend they had discussed about the ills of having a rendezvous with someone of the opposite sex without a mature chaperone around. Kelechi sighed again, the handwriting had clearly been on the wall but his refusal to read it was driving him to his doom now, well probably. He could have just been overreacting all along, he counseled himself
Then a thought occurred to him as he remembered one of the many advice his mum never failed to regal him with whenever they talked on the phone, it was even her favorite mantra. The shrewd one sees the danger and conceals himself but the inexperienced keep right on going and suffers the consequences. So he decided to try and see if he could courteously avoid this danger. "Hey Pearl honey?" He called to his mental tormentor. "Yes Kel" She often called him Kel whenever she felt remorse over something she had done or said, perhaps an auspicious sign Kelechi thought. "I was just thinking. How about I go back home? I'm tired already and it's getting late. Probably we will arrange to meet another time during the we..." She didn't let him finish though as a flash of something he recognized as anger blitzed across her face before changing to concern. It was so fast that it could be missed, but Kelechi saw it; the final confirmation that he was in for a sinister evening. "Never! I've waited this long to meet you, it can't be for nothing. Don't worry we're there already, that brown building is my house." She responded, pointing to a house just a stone throw from where they stood. He only nodded, lost for the exact words to reply her with. She flung her arms around his shoulders then, making a futile attempt to remind him of the intimate moment they had shared online. But Kelechi was having none of it, he had lost every bit of interest he once had. He didn't know why he couldn't muster the courage to insist on his leaving, it seemed a spell had been cast on him. With resignation he conceded that he was no match for girls who played hard to get and that he would stick to his niche if he ever got out of his present mess unscathed.
