I don't think so, the fact still remains that you only have Hnd,unfortunately these schools will still insist you do pgd or an upgrade program before the masters.... If you like have 56 years experience... E no Mata.

We're on the verge of sending our first HND holder directly to a PhD in the US.

I will surely come back with the update - or perhaps some of you will read it in the national newspapers if, by God's grace, it works out.

We won nothing in 2012, and one bronze in 2016.

We also won nothing in 1972, 1980, and 1988. We did not even win in 1952(when we first participated), 1956.

We won one bronze in 1960, 64...and won 2 silver in 1984, three silver and one bronze in 1992, two gold, two silver and one bronze in 1996, one gold and one silver in 2000, and two bronze in 2004, and one bronze in 2008

Well, people who live in glass houses should not throw stones. She willingly took something to enhance her performance.

Good response. I didn't see it before responding. The young or old bros spoke as if we have traditionally always won something in these olympic games. Man - we still have a lot to do, to be able to be winning plenty medals.

I wish more investments can be made into existing sports as well as other new sports, at all levels

So it is okay for Okagbare to take drugs?

Right.

It's a similar view taken by many African Americans about some strange oppressors trying to kill them or oppress them. While this may be true in some instances, it's weird to blame it for every problem that a black person faces.

Some Nigerians have bought into that. That's the thing you just heard from that guy.

Nigeria is heading for the worst Olympic games in decades. The only hopeful had just failed a drug test. Nigerian Olympic committee will use this one to taunt and finish her. She has been 'yabbing' and insulting the committee, accusing them of gross incompetence.

2012 we won nothing. It's not new, and 2012 is not even up to one decade ago.

Dear NL family, I would like to express my gratitude to Walspring and the other people providing Subsidized GRE and TOEFL registration to us. Walspring helped me register for my GRE and TOEFL exams at subsidized rate. The surprising part was that he did so without collecting a single kobo from me initially. I’m grateful.

This is a wonderful feedback.

Don't particularly know them, but well done kudos to Walspring and the subsidy squad.

What is the subsidized rate? I need someone to take this test ASAP.

Thanks

Become a BAUMBRAINS Scholar

Who we are

Baum Tenpers is a research group with a mandate to produce research that i) contributes to the creation of new ideas, ii) pushes the frontier of knowledge and iii) is of relevance to Africa and the world.

One of our major not-for-profit mandates is to attract and train young and eager African students and position them to become influential future researchers. In this regard, we have a long-term goal to identify, nurture and invest in talented African students who will go on to become world class researchers.

What we offer

As part of our continued support for the academic achievements of promising students, we are launching our offer of scholarships to talented undergraduate students for 2021/2022. However, we remain interested in exceptional students who 1) are studying one of Economics, Mathematics, Statistics and 2) have a strong desire to be mentored for an economics PhD in the future. Point 2) is an important condition for a successful scholarship application.

Specific eligibility criteria are as follows

1. Be a university student majoring in the above-mentioned courses (i.e. Economics/Mathematics/Statistics)

2. Have a CGPA of at least 4.5/5.0 or equivalent; students with a CGPA lower than 4.5/5.0 are also encouraged to apply if they stand out in other areas. The requirement to maintain the scholarships is that the stated CGPA be achieved each academic year.

3. Selected BaumBrains Scholars who graduate with top GPAs will attend our graduate-level certificate course in mathematics and economics.

Those who succeed in the certificate course will be given a chance to work with and be mentored by our researchers. They will also be supported to attend leading graduate schools for an economics PhD.

Following the first stage screening, successful applicants will be apprised of the next stages. Except you just have a passion for it! In any case, if you settle for this job, be ready to face the retardation in financial progress that comes with it. Research income would have been a way out, but FG isn't interested in funding research! Over 85% of the society and the students you teach, won't appreciate your hard labour, rather they'll worship entertainment and seek ways to get rich quick such as cybercrimes. Many of us aint happy we chose that path. The rewards are extremely paltry!

Man - this is a very sad picture you have painted. Worshipping entertainment over learning. Just sad. I hope these students don't destroy themselves sha. There is time for everything.

Hhmm... But these are two very different tracks. These countries were in existence before electricity was invented. They invented electricity at some point in their existence and some decades later, they came up with technologies to spread it all over the West. It's not as if it took them years to catch up with some pre-existing technology. We are not asking Nigeria to invent electricity or create anything, we are asking Nigeria to harness a technology that has been in existence long before the country was born. Please, let's not compare adoption with invention.

Just an opinion.

Smart posts like this one make we rethink my not-so-great position that many of our people are dumb. I am sorry I had to develop such admittedly hasty and short sighted view just because I have encountered so many dumbos on this forum, especially some of our young people.

Bravo. I respect your post, Sir

Baum Tenpers Undergraduate Scholarship Award and Mentorship Programme

Eligible students must be in the first or second year of an undergraduate degree. The scholarships have been expanded to now welcome students from other different disciplines.

How to apply

2. A detailed CV that has a passport photo

3. An essay/statement of interest detailing why you believe you qualify for this scholarship, your greatest past achievement, and what you hope to achieve in the future. As we are primarily interested in students aiming for an economics PhD after their undergraduate education, students studying Economics/Mathematics/Statistics should include one or two paragraphs in their essays clearly stating why they want to do an economics PhD in the future.

Following the first stage screening, successful applicants will be apprised of the next stages. One stage may involve completing timed screening tests covering quantitative, verbal, and analytical writing. In general, there will be 3 stages. The last stage will involve a 45-minute interview with our principal researchers via zoom.

Scholarship stipend
The stipend to be paid will be flat and remitted monthly and only during semesters when schools are on session. No payment will be made during holidays. The annualized stipend is NGN120,000 maximum. Stipend will be pro rata of this value. After becoming a Baumbrains Scholar, students with a perfect semester-specific GPA, i.e. 5.0/5.0 in each semester, will get a performance bonus equal to at least 3 times their regular monthly stipend for that semester.

Please note. As always, this scholarship is for indigent students, so preference will always be given to the most gifted students who are indigent. We will be watching out for such students.

All qualified students are encouraged to apply.

Hi - from where did you earn your PhD in economics? Do you do macro (DSGE style, i.e. solving FOC and programming models) and econometrics (replicating results in papers and producing new results)? Example - http://down.aefweb.net/AefArticles/aef210104MeiJiGong.pdf

If these are your areas and you're interested in a postdoc to work on certain projects, email: bt.devresearch@gmail.com, attaching your CV and sample paper.

That is the problem with anyone who is too "Bookish"!
She is probably dreaming of becoming a Professor at 28yrs, to lecture at John Hopkins one day.

The a little above average students (2^1 grade) are the ones l like most, they have an eye for Entrepreneurship and making money.
Somebody like that will be thinking MIT, to read Software Development or A.I.-related stuff that can produce another Google or Facebook or Space-X in the nearest future. undecided

And what is bad about becoming a top research academic?

See, life don't start and end in making money or starting company. Some people will work in research to invent, that's their preference.

Just tire for some of una here.

And yes, that's her life's goal - to become a top researcher, discovering things.

You have a fair profile, but the truth is that nothing from your profile stands out. Try and ace the GRE. I don't think any recommendations, no matter how lofty, would change the outcome. It is even hard for folks with 3.3/4 undergrad GPA. Masters GPA matters a bit but they care a lot more about undergrad. You can't change those but the only thing you can change is your GRE. Alternatively, apply to lower ranked schools but believe me great GRE scores can move mountains, especially at lower ranked schools. Hope I'm not too harsh.

Good advice - generally. I second that it seems these guys favour undergrad over msc - and even some msc are just advanced undergrad in some places...I am in no way saying the OP did an advanced undergrad msc oo.

Though the point of recommendations - they actually can move mountains. Just that I'm not sure whether the poster has access to the type of people who US academics know and respect and would listen to when they say "this student is good".

So, OP, I second this advice. As I said before, retake GRE, and focus your applications on not top schools. Get strong letters from the most research active people you can find who know you and can speak highly and provide a lot of research-relevant details about you.

Please not the half or one page letters that I often see oo that says you went to so so so school, got A's, and are well behaved, noo oo please. Lol. The letter has to be detailed. This type of letter takes days to write and can only be written by people who want to help you succeed.

Bsc 3.1/4, Msc 3.5/4 (wes icap), Gre q151, v157 a3.5, toefl w28, s29, r29, l29. No publications, I've been working in a federal govt agency for 5 years, and my work experience led me to want to carry out the sociological research I want to do. My bsc is in Urban and Regional Planning (2009), and my Msc is in Environmental Pollution Control (2012).

Do not concentrate your application to top schools - or just apply 1 or 2.

Your bulk of applications should concentrate on the second quintile, middle and low ranking programs.

Retake the GRE if you can.

Meanwhile, well done with that TOEFL score. Impressive. Good GRE verbal score too.

2020/2021 Newly Admitted PhD Student, Nigeria University.

I know people in your area, but I don't know your quality (apologies in case you're one of the very few with good quality).

If you can signal your quality by sending your CV to the email addresses above, I could link you to people in your area.

Please note that, to avoid wahala, if you're linked to such people, it would involve you and them alone. Nothing like including a third party's name, except of course that third party worked on projects.

Hmmmm! How will the applicants prove your institution is accredited? When they ask them send the transcript to WES or another body, what will they get? Do you think good schools will accept it? Na waooo. People just wake up to start collecting money from Nigerians anyhow. The kind of things I see and read in this country is abnormal. Just imagine oooo. Here is this one advertising non accredited 9 months program or cert proposed for phd applicants. Very terrible. angry

I can't believe I just read this.

This is unfortunate and an example of the empty people that discourage other people.

What do you know? In any case, you don't deserve a response because you're just a joke.

And by the way, you are not even fit enough to tie the boots of the candidates who attend our unaccredited program. You're not even close. So you had better descend from your high horse because you're definitely a perfect example of the empty barrel makes the most noise.

I can't believe someone wrote the above. Where are the youth of this country going? Where is their thinking cap? Or has the standard gotten this bad that people are no more capable of basic reasoning and conclusion.

So pathetic. I mean, someone wrote this?

Oh my.

To wit: an American or British WTO DG - inspite of the outward appearance of being neutral - would actually push American and British interests in negotiation and arbitration, frequently conferring with their president/prime minister. The question of "what it means for us" realizes that Dr. Iweala's would be highly unlikely to push Nigerian (or African interests for that matter), so while this is certainly historic, it doesn't change anything on ground.

This is a good argument.

Is the mama there as Nigerian or American?
