Four elements contribute to the success of a movie at the box-office. They include good script, experienced director, professional publicist, and most importantly, the big name stars.

Of all the four, there is one a producer should never violate at the market place and that is the ‘star’ aspect of it. There could be a bad script, inexperienced director and not too good publicity for the movie but it is almost impossible to have Return On Investment (ROI) with un-bankable stars.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde:
On the list is Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde with box-office gross of N60 million. She made N24 million with Last Flight to Abuja, N6 million from Private Storm and her N30 million share in Ije bring her total earning to N60 million.

This year alone, no actress has made as much as N24 million from a single movie; Funke Akindele would have done so with The Return of Jenifa but the movie hit the box office in 2011.

Omotola, who was reported to have been paid N5 million by Tarila Thompson all in the bid to make his movie a blockbuster, has been described as the biggest box office actress of 2012. She recorded successes back to back but it remains to be seen if she can pull off the box office magic again with Amina and other movies coming in 2013.

Omotola has been an A-list actress even before Genevieve got her first big break and so what has been working for her is the wise investment in her brand. Her enduring presence and unceasing contact with her fans via the social media has made her popular even in an environment where a mother of four like her is not fashionable.

Genevieve Nnaji:

Genevieve Nnaji

Next is Genevieve Nnaji. Love or hate her, Genny as she is fondly called, has a way with cinema audiences that make them come back again and again for her movies.

So far, Genevieve’s starring in the movies has grossed over N83 million at the box office. Mirror Boy (described by the actress as her first major film and the first to put her at the box-office) made N18 million, while Ije netted N60 million turning out to be Nigeria’s highest grossing movie ever. But Genevieve had to share the money with Omotola, who also acted alongside her. If the sharing formula is 50-50, then Genevieve gets N30 million of the total gross.

Genevieve’s next movie, Tango with Me went on to make N35 million. So, putting all the figures together, Genny remains at the head of the pack. What seem to be working for Genevieve are her enduring power, popularity and social media connection. The actress has been there for over a decade and is still waxing stronger. Her wine seems to taste better with age.

Another plus for Genny is her popularity. Genevieve is hugely popular across Africa and most especially among the youths. Before now, she has been very active on the social media especially Twitter. She even had to put up a Facebook advert after reports emerged that some acts were ahead of her there.

[b]The Richest and Most Powerful Babes In Nollywood

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde Four elements contribute to the success of a movie at the box-office. They include good script, experienced director, professional publicist, and most importantly, the big name stars. Of all the four, there is one a producer should never violate at the market place and that is the ‘star’ aspect of it. Genevieve Nnaji: Genevieve Nnaji Next is Genevieve Nnaji. Love or hate her, Genny as she is fondly called, has a way with cinema audiences that make them come back again and again for her movies. So far, Genevieve’s starring in the movies has grossed over N83 million at the box office. Before now, she has been very active on the social media especially Twitter. She even had to put up a Facebook advert after reports emerged that some acts were ahead of her there.

Funke Akindele: Funke Akindele Surprisingly, the third person on the list is Funke Akindele, a young lady who rose to fame in I Need To Know, a TV series, and went on to earn a monstrous fame with Jenifa. Funke is an unlikely candidate on this list. Now, how can one explain that she is third on a list parading heavy weights like Omoni Oboli, Nse Ikpe-Etim and Stephanie Okereke among others? So far, Funke has made over N56 million, netting over N20 million in 2012 alone. In The Return of Jenifa, Funke netted N35 million. The movie ran till February 2012. Her movie, Married but Living Single made N9.9 million while Maami made N11 million. The actress is on her way to another cinema glory with a movie, A Wish. Let’s hope she will be able to wave the magical wand again and create a box-office success. For Funke who recently got married, the plus factor for her is her huge popularity among the masses and elites. Her movie, Jenifa cuts across all social groups with the street parlance in it becoming the mode of communication in social gathering. And as an icing on the cake, Funke has moved upscale, she is now the toast of events organized by the rich and not so rich. Her box office credibility transcends the cinema as all DVDs parading her face turn into gold.

Omoni Oboli: Omoni Oboli Omoni Oboli, who is still largely unknown to those who don’t patronise the cinema and social media, is fourth on the list. She is a silent achiever. Before the trio of Genevieve, Omotola and Funke even dreamt of hitting the box office, Omoni Oboli already took the lead. Figurine, her first box office appearance made N13 million while her second effort, Anchor Baby made N18 million bringing her total earning to N31million. Omoni’s strength is her exclusivity and knack for quality. It is a known fact that if the project is not big and ambitious, Omoni might not do it. The disadvantage of that is, despite her box office credibility, Omoni is still unknown in areas where there is no access to cinemas. Perhaps, that is the reason she tries to make up with the red carpet presence. For now, the exclusivity is working for Omoni; perhaps her new movie, Broken and other works will introduce a new twist. One other thing that should not be forgotten is the unprecedented publicity of Anchor Baby in 2010. The film also had Omoni at the forefront of meeting and greeting of fans at the cinemas. Nse Ikpe-Etim: Nse Ikpe-Etim The fifth slot belongs to Nse Ikpe-Etim. She seems to be the latest sensation in big budget movies. In Mr and Mrs, Nse was a delight, her performance was a reference point and it was a hook that kept drawing people to the cinema while the movie was there. Mr and Mrs made N6 million while another of her film, Phone Swap made N20 million, making a total of N26 million. Too early for Nse to cement her place, as she hasn’t done N15 million back-to-back but one thing the actress has made clear is that she has intention of doing that. The leading four acts should be afraid of Nse because her strength lies in her pure acting talent. Nse is born to act, deemed to be unnecessarily assertive a times, but you can’t accuse her of not knowing her lines. And she pushes her movies with virgour, moving from one cinema to the other. However, Nse should watch it as many have accused her of being too ‘self-conscious’, a term casually used for budding stars who have ‘over-hyped’ impression of themselves as this could alienate fans who make the box-office count. Rita Dominic and Stephanie Okereke: Rita Dominic and Stephanie Okereke Rita Dominic and Stephanie Okereke should readily make the list but they haven’t appeared at the cinemas more than once. Hopefully, Rita will break into the list with The Meeting, Lion of 76 and Street of Calabar while Stephanie already had N10 million under her belt with Through the Glass. Of course, there are exceptions to the rules. A bankable star makes easier the job of a producer; the absence of one, however, is not a ready-made doom for a movie as Avatar and Slumdog Millionaire (both global box office hits) have shown. But if one would take a risk or err, it’s better to err on the part of caution. Wikipedia defines a bankable star to be an actor famous or charismatic enough to be “capable of guaranteeing box-office success simply by showing up in a movie”. It is common knowledge that a Will Smith will sell any movie no matter how bad as long as he has his face on the jacket. In Nigeria, some movie stars have proven again and again that they can guarantee return on investment as long as their faces adorn the poster. They are Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Genevieve Nnaji, Omoni Oboli, Funke Akindele and Nse Ikpe-Etim. Become a Fan on Facebook -

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde - Star Of Nigeria's Nollywood
Film Industry - Brings African Cinema To The World

AFTER YEARS OF CONSUMING HOLLYWOOD movies, Nigeria's Nollywood is now creating its own films and its
own superstars. Actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde is at the forefront of the movement. By Ben Arogundade

SHE SCORES A ZERO on the Hollywood Richter scale. She has never starred in a major motion picture. Her most recent films, Ije and Last Flight to Abuja, mean nothing to devotees of Netflix and Lovefilm. She recently met Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day Lewis, both of whom had previously never heard of her, despite her having starred in over 300 films. And yet she’s bigger across the African diaspora than Halle Berry, and her TV show pulls more viewers than Oprah’s and Tyra’s at their height, combined. She is the first African celebrity ever to amass over one million Facebook likes, and she has just been honoured in Time’s prestigious list of the 100 Most Influential People In The World, alongside Kate Middleton, Michelle Obama and Beyoncé.

But mention her name to most people within the Western hemisphere, and they’ll reply, “Omotola who?”

“I went to Tesco recently, and they practically had to shut down the store when people recognised me,” she says. “I actually got scared.”

INTRODUCING NOLLYWOOD
Within this age of global hyper communications, how can this kind of thing happen to an actress who is virtually unknown over here? The answer is, because she has made her name exclusively within Nollywood — the fledgling, low budget, high output Nigerian film industry that is rapidly making its mark internationally, and which churns out more English language movies than Hollywood or Bollywood — somewhere between a staggering 1,000 and 2,000 a year for the straight-to-video market.

LONDON PHOTO CALL
I meet Omotola in a photography studio in an industrial estate in Bermondsey, south-east London. I watch from the open plan kitchen area as she poses during aa photo-shoot for the cover of The Sunday Telegraph's Stella magazine. Everything about her is BIG. Big body, big hair, big personality, big laugh: she comes across like Oprah’s big sister. She seems to enjoy being photographed, and is relaxed and happy in front of camera, joking with the photographer. When she laughs, her mouth is free and unrestrained, and her fleshy cheeks suddenly inflate upwards while her eyes compress into slits. Her face is round and cat-like and her skin is flawless, complete with a rich brown sheen, like polished ebony.

The photo session runs over, as the Nigerian actress is here with her own film crew who are recording the event for a future episode of her popular reality TV show, Omotola: The Real Me, which means lots of delays between shots as she does a number of star turns for her cameraman, explaining every aspect of each outfit change. As she talks into the camera lens she bubbles with excited energy, as if she’s just about to open a surprise present.

THE INTERVIEW - TWO YORUBAS
When the shoot is finally over she approaches me and asks if I am a mini-cab driver come to pick her up. I’m annoyed at her mistake, but I muffle it, explain who I really am, and we finally settle down to talk at the kitchen table, with Omotola still wearing her final outfit — a shimmering, head-to-toe gown that is cling-filmed so tightly to her curves that she looks like an African mermaid.

She speaks with kinetic, girlish excitement, rattling off sentences in fast, extended flurries. After a few minutes I feel as if we’ve known each other for years. We are both Yorubas, one of Nigeria’s major ethnic groups — although I am slightly embarrassed that, as a Londoner, I don’t understand the odd word of our native tongue that pepper her sentences — although I pretend I do, nodding and smiling each time.

'OMOSEXY' ORIGINS
Yoruba names all have meanings, and Omotola tells me that hers refers to “a child who is equal to wealth”. But to many of her Nigerian fans she is known simply as “Omosexy” — a nickname given to her by her 45-year-old husband — airline pilot Matthew Ekeinde. “He bought me a car back in 2009, and that was the plate number,” she recalls. “All my cars have special plate numbers, like Omotola 1, etc.” When I ask how many cars it goes up to, she laughs with embarrassment. “A few.” When she first saw her personalised licence plate she was horrified. “I thought, Oh no. It sounded cocky — as if I was telling everybody I’m sexy, y’know-wha-I-mean?” She punctuates her sentences with this latter phrase, which she reels off as a single word. “Some people actually call me Omosexy,” she continues, “not realising that my name is actually Omotola”.

The 35-year-old star has been acting since she was 16. Her breakthrough role came in 1995, in the Nollywood classic, Mortal Inheritance, in which she played a sickle-cell patient fighting for her life. Since then she has established a staggering average of 16 films a year. I put it to her that she must be the most prolific actress in the world. She laughs and shakes her head. “I am sure there are people that have beaten that record in Nigeria. Trust me. It is easy to turn around with straight-to-video movies. It is the fashion to shoot until you drop, night and day. You have to remember that we are on very low budgets, so there is no time to wait.”

THE BIRTH OF NOLLYWOOD
Nollywood originally exploded onto the film landscape less than 20 years ago from the bustling streets of Lagos. Its pioneers were traders and bootleggers who started out selling copies of Hollywood movies before graduating into producing their own titles, as an inexpensive way to procure more content for a burgeoning market. The traders finance the films, (the average budget is between £15,000 and £30,000), then sell copies in bulk to local operators, who then distribute them for sale in markets, shops and street-corners, for as little as £2 each. The financial equation is heavily problematic, with endemic piracy and issues over copyright and a lack of legally binding contracts. Nevertheless, what started as a ramshackle business is today worth an estimated $500 million a year and rising. All this in a country that still lacks a reliable electricity supply.

I wonder what it is about Omotola that makes her popular enough to get mobbed in British supermarkets by her Afro-Caribbean fans. “I don’t know,” she shrugs. “I wish someone would tell me! People can relate to me, I suppose. They feel as if they know me. I have been acting since I was 16, and so a lot of my audience has grown up with me”. At the same time, in a country heavily defined by religion and tradition, it helps that Omotola is seen as a stable role model — a God-fearing woman who has been married to the same man for 17 years, and balances her work life with bringing up four children.

OMOTOLA'S BIOGRAPHY
Omotola Jalade Ekeinde was born in Lagos, Nigeria on February 7, 1978, into a middle class family of strict Methodists. Her father, Sola, was the manager of the Lagos country club, while her mother, Toyin, worked for a local supermarket chain. Omotola is the eldest of three children, and has two brothers, Tayo and Bolaji. She was a tomboy growing up — a strong, independent child who took no nonsense from the opposite sex. “I used for scare boys from a very young age,” she insists. “They found me too much, because I knew what I wanted, and I would boss them around. In those days my mother would joke that I would never find a husband.”

As a child Omotola was closest to her father. “He was a different kind of African man,” she recalls. “He was very enlightened. He always asked me what I wanted, and encouraged me to speak up. He treated me like a boy.” Her father died tragically in a car accident when Omotola was 12, while she was away at boarding school prepping for her exams. How was she affected by his death? “I didn’t grieve,” she says. “I didn’t know how to process it. When I got home people were telling me that my mother had been crying for days, and that, as the eldest, I had to be strong for her and my younger brothers. I didn’t know what to do, so I just bottled everything up. It affected me for many years afterwards as I came to realise I was hurting, and I was always very angry.”

CONTROLLING TEARS
Omotola would later play out her repressed grief on camera, using it as an emotional trigger to make herself cry whenever scripts called for it. But this soon created other problems. “The director would shout cut, and I would still be crying,” she recalls. “I could bring the tears, but I could not control them. In the end I had to stop using that technique.”

At the age of 16 Omotola met her future husband, Matthew Ekeinde, in church. He was so keen on her that the day after their first meeting he just showed up at her house unannounced. “I hadn’t even had a shower yet, and he was knocking on my door. “He soon became a friend of the family. “He was almost like a father figure,” she says. “He would drop my brothers at school and stuff.”

He proposed when Omotola was 18. They had two wedding ceremonies, the second of which took place in mid-air, aboard a Dash-7 aircraft flying from Lagos to Benin. Initially, Omotola’s mother thought she was too young to marry, and asked Matthew to wait, but he refused. “She was really shocked,” says Omotola. “She said, ‘If you want something badly enough you wait for it,’ but he said, ‘If I want something I take it’. He was very, very bold. It was one of the things I really found fascinating about him. He’s amazing. If I wasn’t married to him I couldn’t see myself with anybody else. I’m a handful.” How is she a handful, I enquire? “Well, for example, I have just been away in the States for a month, and now I’m here in London. What Nigerian man can cope with that?”

EKEINDE - THE NEW AFRICAN MAN
Ekeinde is quickly becoming the reluctant poster boy for the new Nigerian man. “A lot of men come up to him on his flights and say, ‘You’re a real man — I can’t believe how you deal with it all.’ He also gets a lot of invitations from various bodies to come and speak about how he copes as a modern Nigerian man in a relationship with powerful working woman.”

Omotola’s ascent into the Nollywood elite began in the same year she met Ekeinde. She was modelling at the time. One afternoon she tagged along with another model friend who was attending a Nollywood audition. “She didn’t get the part, and she came out and was very sad,” says Omotola. “Then she said, why don’t you go in and have a go? I said OK, and went in and got the part. My friend wasn’t happy. That was the end of our friendship.”

Although Omotola has gone on to star in over 300 films, it was actually music that was her first love. But, despite releasing three albums so far, her parallel career as a recording artist has so far not hit big. “Music doesn’t pay the bills,” she laments. “Audiences can’t picture me as a singer, only an actor. It takes time.” Meanwhile, she is busy enough with her other passion — philanthropy. “I actually first and foremost consider myself an activist and humanitarian,” she says proudly. She started in 2005, working with the United Nations as a World Food Programme ambassador. She now has her own foundation, the Omotola Youth Empowerment Program, as well as campaigning for Amnesty International. “I have a lot of young people writing to me, feeling disillusioned. There’s so much injustice in Africa, and people’s lives being trampled on. The foundation was designed to give voice to these people.”

Respectfully, You can't compare Omotola with Genevieve. Something must be wrong with your eyes. This is has nothing to do with tribalism...Genevieve is naturally beautiful; she needs no enhancement, over makeup, over dressing to look good. She can just step out in a rag and she will still be beautiful...that's Genevieve. For Omotola, she is okay...not ugly and not naturally beautiful; she does a lot makeup, enhancement, extreme dressings to look good. 99% of Nairalanders; Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and rest will agree with me on this. [/quote. Genevive without makeup lol

[b]Male prostitution causes rise in sale of pampers in Kenya

on August 20, 2013 / in News 8:02 pm

Addis Ababa – The Police in Kenya said Tuesday said they were battling to contain a new trend of commercial sex tourism that targets young boys in the coastal towns of the country .

The reports monitored from a local radio station, quoted Police as saying the trend had caused the rise in the sale pampers in the region due to the rising health problems among boys indulging in the act.

Malindi sub county Deputy Police Commissioner, Joshua Nkanatha told Kenya local radio that boys from poor families were being lured into the trade by rich male tourists.

The Police official said the situation had lead to an increase in number of cases of HIV/AIDS spread in the area.

“A survey we conducted shows that boys engaging in sexual activities with male tourists are buying pampers because they can no longer hold their stool, “Nkanatha said.

Nkanatha, who spoke during a Public Baraza at HGM primary school, Malindi said “male prostitution had become high

in Malindi and contributing to increased cases of HIV and AIDS.

He urged educated and concerned members of the public to take up the responsibility of enlightening the youths

about the health risks of engaging in the vice.

Malindai is a resort town on the outskirt of Nairobi, the Kenyan Capital which attracts Tourists from within and outside Africa. (NAN)

Looks like Ghana’s own Koshie Mills of K3PR In Los Angeles and Michael Djaba of Ifactorylive In UK are the dream team who have been instrumental in assisting Nollywood sweetheart, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde with her Time 100 Celebration. check out these candid photos of how Omotola was treated like royalty, sharing table with two time Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis during the ceremony.

TIME’s 100 list was inaugurated about a decade ago and has become one of the most anticipated lists worldwide.Omotola was named in the “Icon” honoree category alongside the First Lady Michelle Obama, Daniel Day Lewis, Kate Middleton, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Malala Yousafzai and many others.

Omotola let her hair down and celebrated in style with her fellow honorees on April 23rd, 2013 at Time Warner Center, New York .She looked elegantly beautiful in Nigerian fashion designer Iconic Ivanity’s custom designed black gown, accessorized with Nigerian luxury jewelry designer Nehita’s 18 karat white gold black diamond encrusted earrings and a diamond onyx cocktail ring set in 18 karat yellow gold. Omotola was further honored and pleasantly surprised to find her portrait was one of the 20 honorees chosen to be proudly displayed on the wall of fame at the event.

The gala was truly memorable and she was delighted to share the moment with her fellow honorees of past and present like Vice President Joe Biden, Jimmy Fallon, Ariana Huffington, Steven Speilberg, Shonda Rhimes, Barbara Walters, Christina Aguilera and many more.

In her words; “When I was first informed that TIME Magazine had contacted my team about this great honor, I first thought I was being Punk’d. Quoting the Vice President Mr. Joe Biden “Being on the Time’s list is a testament that you are doing a great job in your various fields and are expected to do even more”.

I am definitely inspired to continue the work I’m doing in my artistry, my foundation O.Y.E.P (Omotola Youth Empowerment Program), UN and Amnesty international. This honor will always be indelibly etched in my memory. It is a very exciting time in my career and life and I am grateful to Time Magazine for recognizing my work and giving me another platform to help bring favorable attention to Africa.

I share this honor with my husband, children, family, professional team and my wonderful fans all over the world that never ceases to amaze me with their undying support. I am proud to be Nigerian and my hope is for my journey to be a gateway in bridging any gap within Africa and the West artistically and philanthropically”.

Michael Djaba from Omotola’s management describes the news and event succinctly. “Omotola is the epitome of what bankable, young, artistically rich, success stories can look like direct from Africa and on the global stage. We at Ifactorylive are extremely proud of her recognition and are confident that her career will continue to soar to greater heights.”
