I wish someone who has watched all of it can give us a low down. So much twists and suspense.
Food / Re: What Kind Of Powdery Milk Do You Use? by Akpunwa(f): 12:01pm On Nov 20, 2012
Peak or Oldenburger.

......
Milk sold with measure ain't it. The trader sells it over a period of time...it becomes unhygienic and when air enters it, it tastes bland (and does not dissolve easily as well). I personally think it is for bakeries.
There are quite a lot of small prepackaged 20g, 200g and so on you can buy without compromising your health.
Events / Re: Wedding Mistakes ~ What Would You Have Done Differently? by Akpunwa(f): 10:48pm On Nov 06, 2012
I regret paying the caterer and decor vendor in full.
-I still do not understand how the meat we personally arranged for (to avoid stories o) finished and late guests couldn't be served with meat.
-The decor vendor just did what she felt like, paying elaborate attention only to the backdrop and our seat area. The guest area was bland. So while the guests facing us had a good sight, I was unhappy looking at the fugly hall.
- we made so many last minute arrangements cos of work engagements (no professional planner) that left us running helter shelter a day before the wedding day proper. See stress written over me that night.
- can u imagine I forgot to book a hair stylist?! My friend practically begged a stylist we approached (she was about closing) to at least get the hair fixed by 7pm since she said she couldn't make it to dress the hair next day. You can imagine what happened with the hair the next day....we just managed to do one razz up do with a big hair clip I had handy. I immediately let the hair down before the reception.
- Never forget or skip discussing charges with a vendor under the pretext of family relationship. The videographer(my husband's kinsman) asked to be included in the photography as backup. This is after we had made arrangements and paid someone for it. Hubby agreed and gave him the go-ahead but with the agreement that he captures only milestones.
This aproko backup guy ended up snapping away....u name it -empty altar, rev fathers, guests, church compound etc and brought this huge album! Who send am? He learnt his lesson cos we of course refused to pay the huge bill.

Thanks Vivi for addressing that wicked friend. How callous can people be?
Truth is if he doesn't have a farm or buy groceries in bulk such that he spends the 25k on beverages and few perishables each month, his family is grossly undernourished.

I must warn you OP to avoid comparing ur family with another. You can work something out with your wife. Both of you can sacrifice some things to make 40k the budget. But remember prices are skyrocketing probably cos of the floods. I don't know where you live...cos things are more expensive depending on your location. A cup measure of beans went up from 35-40-80 and now 120! It's a similar trend too for egusi, ogbono, and ALL others.

Some posts got me laughing . Esp the 'mgbeke' names. I so hate 'daddy' and 'mummy' except for old couples.

What do you think about calling him 'mine'? Like re-emphasizing he is yours flesh and blood!
Politics / Re: All Federal Roads In The South-East Are Dilapidated by Akpunwa(f): 9:45am On Oct 02, 2012
So true. I plied that road last month.
It is a death trap! So much so that motorists take village bush paths which are not better off themselves. Not to mention the number of vehicles trapped in the gully-like expressway.
But then, the local roads in Aba are impassable even for pedestrians.
Family / Re: Childbirth by Akpunwa(f): 10:49am On Sep 26, 2012
Not to scare anyone, but it was the most painful experience ever! The constipation and sleepless nights I suffered in the following days were something else too.

All the same, nothing surpasses the joy of having children.

A man shared this gist in Lagos as we were discussing this in a bus.
. . .
He was just strolling in his neighbourhood (around the military era when things were hard). A guy of about the same age with him, coming in the opposite direction broke into huge smiles, hailing him. Shouting 'how far? You did not change at all since primary school days'. They stood there by the road exchanging pleasantries. He askEd about the whereabouts of Chinedu, Chidi, Emeka (all common names) and they just they gist they go. The man smelled sth fishy and asked him the pri sch they attended together na so the guy evade the question begin talk about how he is doing well with John in Europe. The man complained about being hard up with the situation of things in the country. The wayo guy promised it would be a thing of the past as he came down with his Eoropean friends who had links in the Embassy.
The man sensing he was a fraudster asked that they go to a beer parlour beside to gist well. He gulped bottles of star and meat join while playing along. He asked for where to pee, excused himself from the wayo guy and vanished from the back of the house.
We laughed in the bus eh dey hail the man for his sharpness.

In one of the encounters in Aba, a young man walked up to me and started blabbing that after serving his master for ten years, he just died the previous week. Prior to his death, he had stashed money (hard currency) away in a box in the house to be used in 'settling him or setting him free' to start his own business. The only snag was that the late man's wife was insisting he should bring anyone related to him as a witness that he's been settled and he had only two days to make the claim.
He lamented that he's an orphan and the only child. The closest relative who could help was in Gabon and cannot make it at such short notice. He promised he would give a portion of the money.
I quietly started preaching to him to stop scouting people for rituals and do sth better with his life...I was still talking and the guy just left me & slipped into the crowd.

The encounter in Owerri was long before universal banking thingy started. I had gone to collect money on mum's behalf from a partner.
I collected the money and headed to the park to board a bus home. A young man walked up to me (on Douglas/Mbaise road if u know Owerri) asking for direction to Eke-onunwa Hospital that he's been trying to locate a doctor he supplied surgical instruments running into miilions of naira. I was past listening cos I knew instantly. Without uttering a word, I crossed to the middle of the road (it's a double carriage way) and continued walking to Rotobi park closeby. From the corner of my eyes, I saw a guy (his cohort) cross the road with me, tagging behind and asking me to pity the guy and help him as he's been stranded the whole day. Immediately he made to touch me, I shouted "satan get ye behind me!" lol.
Na so they leave me o.
...
Years later when I got to know Owerri fairly well, I discovered the hospital does not exist.

The most hilarious happened like 10 yrs ago in Uyo. It was my first visit to Uyo. I just stopped a bike on alighting at the park and told him my destination. As soon as the okada sped off, some guy flagged him down (of all the empty bikes around o). The guy showed okadaman an address scribbled on a piece of paper. He opened a big polythene bag clasped to his chest with the other hand and mehn see money in bundles!
He begged the man to take him to the address so that thieves wont snatch the bag from him (I started smiling deep inside). The okadaman vex tell am say im carry passenger now and advised him to call another bike. He moved like 10m from the guy and pleaded that we help the man...that I should allow him sit behind me and after taking him to the address in the neighbourhood, he'll take me to my destination free. Nnaa see balls of fire from my eyes...I shouted that if he didn't stop the bike, I would give him a blinding slap. He stopped immediately, I came down, his cohort ran up to him and they sped off.

@ The guy asking their mode of operation in Aba, It's usually not with taxi but someone asking for direction to a non existent address. There's always a second party that will come and show sympathy for the 'asker'. People are now streetwise in Aba so they've kinda stopped and moved to other cities.
I can't remember the number of times I've encountered them. 4X in Aba and once in Owerri, Uyo and Umuahia. Same old story! I wonder why people still fall for their lame story.
My story next...

Some website I read said it's better to start potty training when the baby has started walking among other things. Old wives advice to start at 4 months.
Well I tried at 5months and gave up. Now I plan waiting till she is one year or thereabout.

[quote author=PrettyCindy]I bought cerelac cereal for my baby but i just hate the sandy/garry-like texture. Even after mixing well with water, it still looks like soaked garri. God! I hate it.

lol at soaked garri. Well that's something for his pearly whites to munch on. My baby didn't like it too, I had to chew on half the contents to finish it. In case you want to try cereals again, Friso Gold Rice is wonderful.

@Enaye, you can see mago mago if u look out for it o. Remember they are mutilating something that was factory-written so it's never so clean the real deal. But then, the reputable products do not stay long on the shelf for anyone to try altering the date.
On the preservatives, the cereals are dry already and the formula mixed with it is dry too, so I don't think there's need for them....at least I have not seen any on the contente list (for the ones I use anyway).

Health / Re: Is Rain Water Safe To Drink? by Akpunwa(f): 9:24pm On Jul 17, 2012
Most rain water is not good for drinking unless proven wrong by physicochemical & bacteriological analysis.
This is because as rain makes its descent to the ground, it mixes with gases in the atmosphere as well as suspended particles (dust, smoke, living matter etc). That explains for the clear visibility you notice after a downpour. Also, there is acid rain in places where oxides of sulphur for example are released into the atmosphere by exploration or production activities. The dissolved gas is what causes the acidity
pardon my long grammar...

My friend who had subdermal implant (Norplant) done last year is complaining of the side effects-Mood swing, weight gain etc. The IUCDs too have their side effects but you should be ready to pay a little price nah. Terminal methods too hmmm...
I think when I am ready, I will use the old fashioned calendar thing plus emergency contraceptn pills when in doubt.
Family / Re: Which Is More Nutitional? Ogi Or Dry Canned Cereal? by Akpunwa(f): 5:40pm On Jul 16, 2012
What are we saying? That you are adding milk is the same fortification. Afterall, it is 'milk solids' that is used to enrich the dry cereal. There is no preservative...at least in the ones I use.
I love soyabeans too and use it as well. I assure you there is nothing wrong with canned baby cereals. I wouldn't say I disagree with what your Paedo said cos businessmen are mean. I rely on reputable products (cereals & formula alike) and not just any fancy product in the market. Moreover I do not buy if the tin is not in good condition or there is mago mago on the print.
Health / Re: NEW BORN BABIES! Are U A New Mum? Then Lets Discuss Babies Here!!!!! by Akpunwa(f): 4:15pm On Jul 14, 2012
@Ifyemma, if you are in Nigeria, the common ones are Friso gold cereals (available in rice and wheat variants), Cerelac (corn and wheat), and Nutrend. Petsonally, I love Friso gold rice for its creamy consistency and taste cos I find the wheat variant too sugary and all my baby does is throw it up.
It's best to start introducing solids with simple cereals like rice and enriched pap b4 moving to wheat.
Xoxo.
