prettyprettywow: You forgot that these are salaries of specialist Doctors(consultants) with over 12yrs of education and average of $300k in student loan (for US Drs) as compared to the salaries of an entry level nurse ( 4yrs degree and less than $50k student loanfor US graduates)). You fail to realize that in US, resident Drs earn an average of $45k, quite below the salary of the least hospital worker. So when they say Drs aern 200k, know that they are talking about consultants, and if you wanna compare with nurses, talk about nurse practitioners where some specialist nurse practitioners earn more than some specialist Drs e.g Anaesthetic nurses (CRNA) earn more than family physicians. Our Drs want to reap where they did not sow.

Besides, nobody is asking to earn same salary as Drs. That has never been the issue

The appointment of the Surgeon-General of the Federation is a done deal. JOHESU or whatever else they call themselves cannot stop it. Their arguments against it are downright hilarious and filled with untruths and show a poor comprehension of basic English. But we can't really expect better from a conglomeration of some vocal frustrated half-baked doctor wannabes.

Let's clear some misconceptions:

1. No nurse or pharmacist has ever been the Surgeon-General of the United States. That office has always from inception to present all 18 times been headed by a Physician.

2. The US Surgeon-General is the operational head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC) and thus the leading spokesperson on matters of public health in the federal government of the United States.

3. Because of it's history, the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC) is organized like a military organization, which is why the US Surgeon-General bears the rank of Rear Admiral. However, officially, they are designated non-combatant.

4. A lot of what has been written here by JOHESU members concerning the US Surgeon-General confuses the Surgeon-Generals of the US Armed Forces with that of the Surgeon-General of the United States

Wikipedia: In the United States and many areas of British Commonwealth, the title of Surgeon General refers to a physician commissioned by the government and entrusted with public health responsibilities. It is a step in the right direction. Fixing hospitals is good but the general misconception abounding in Nigeria is that you need advanced state-of-the-art hospitals and equipment to achieve better health indices; to reduce maternal mortality and infant mortality and raise life expectancy of Nigerians. Not so.

More than 90% of the health problems of Nigeria can be solved by strengthening Primary Care. A case in point is Cuba versus the United States. Cuba spends per capita about $168 on health compared to the United States which spends more than $4500 per capita, and it is widely acknowledged that Cuba has one of the best healthcare systems in the worls, outranking the United States on nearly all health indices. They were able to achieve this by ensuring universal health coverage, and doing things like universal access to clean drinking water etc. These sort of initiatives fall within the purview of Public Health.

There is no coherent Public Health direction or policy in Nigeria. The appointment of a Surgeon-General goes a long way towards ensuring that by providing leadership and direction for Public Health in Nigeria.

To address the topic of this thread. The issue of the core North versus the Middle-Belt cannot be simplistically subsumed under the rubric of "Christian Northerners". That betrays a failure to understand the nuances of the relationship between these 2 regions, a failure to take into consideration history that predates 1914. Just as it is in Yorubaland, and among the Igala and to some extent the Nupe, a lot of the Middle-Belt ethnicities have within their families adherents of Islam, Christianity and Traditional religions. And for them, religion is not in the forefront in terms of ethnic identity.

It is only the political leaders of the Hausa people who have used religion as a means of social mobilization; who regard all other Nigerians (and this includes Muslims of other Nigerian ethnicities) as infidels and inferior. Why else do you think it is only in the North that we have witnessed targeted religious riots that have killed other Nigerian ethnicities? This is largely because for the Hausa, unlike most other Nigerian ethnic groups, religion became a substitute for ethnic identity. The Fulani overlords following Dan Fodio's conquest successfully stamped out independent Hausa culture and history, replacing it with religion as a way of preventing their overthrow.

Whether the Middle-Belt votes for GEJ in 2015 or not will depend on the configuration of the main opposition ticket. In any case, as they say "a week is a long time in politics" and any prognostications at this point may well be off the mark. Perhaps GEJ might even be the APC candidate. . .after all, PDP has just completed the takeover of APC.

Actually it is in the patient's best interests. Privatizing will impose efficiency and raise standards. It will also cut down on the strikes in the health sector. As an example, try visit Garki Hospital in Abuja and compare it's efficiency with Asokoro or Maitama District Hospitals. Garki is run according to PPP arrangement. There you will find doctors (even Consultants) and nurses at work 24 hours unlike in the public hospitals when absenteeism is high and you have rude and incompetent nurses.

Former Governor Segun Osoba of Ogun State who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that he met Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, during his trip to the United States in September 2013. Recounting his chance meeting with Ms. Obasanjo to SaharaReporters, Chief Osoba said he was in the United States for the 73rd anniversary of the Nieman Foundation Fellowship when he ran into Iyabo, a former senator in Nigeria. The former governor told SaharaReporters he was staying at The Charles Hotel in Cambridge when he had a chance encounter with the daughter of the former president who told him her car was parked in the hotel’s basement parking lot.

Chief Osoba said that, after the meeting, Ms. Obasanjo went downstairs to get her car and then drove him to the offices of the Nieman Foundation Center where he had an event. He said commute took close to an hour, leaving plenty of time for a long conversation between him and former President Obasanjo’s daughter.

Speaking further, Chief Osoba disclosed that Iyabo expressed exactly the same sentiments about her father contained in her letter that was just published by SaharaReporters. According to the former governor, Ms. Obasanjo stated that her father would divide the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) more than it was then after his so-called intervention in the party. He said Ms. Obasanjo also stated that she had no plans to return anymore to Nigerian politics, a sentiment she expressed in the acerbic letter to her father.

Chief Osoba added that, after his return from the US, he met former President Obasanjo a month later at the 80th birthday party of Chief Adedoja Adewolu and told him of his encounter with Iyabo in Massachusetts, including her view of his intervention in the PDP. Former Governor Osoba said he strongly believed that his discussion with Mr. Obasanjo might have prompted the former President to tell his daughter to run on the platform of the APC, another revelation made in her letter.

Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo wrote an 11-page letter to her father which she sent to Lagos-based Vanguard newspaper. In the letter, she described her father as a liar, manipulator and a hypocrite. She also characterized her father as a wife-beater and abominable father.

Your serial posting of news articles only prove two things.
1. You are very ignorant about the capability of Nigerian doctors working in Nigeria and
2. Nigerians like to travel abroad for treatment at the drop of a hat especially when someone else is footing the bill. It does not address my claim that most of what they are traveling abroad for can be done in Nigeria.

Danbaba Suntai that travelled abroad came back fully fit? Right? The guy suffered a severe head injury. There are competent neurosurgeons working here in Nigeria that could have treated him with exactly the same outcomes as that obtained from his 10 month sojourn in the USA. In one of my earlier posts, did I not remind you of Idris Wada of Kogi, another governor involved in an accident, who was treated fully in Nigeria, despite urgings by his fellow politicians including even the president that he travel abroad for treatment. But of course you will develop selective amnesia to that fact since it does not suit your narrative.

Trying to use the state of Nigeria's health sector as an excuse for not developing an indigenous space program is an epic fail. You presume to comment on the state of Nigeria's health sector but you actually have no idea what the real problems are. Here is a hint: the problem with Nigeria's health sector is not an inability to do medical exams or perform transplants or carry out routine surgeries like appendectomies (which is what the governors travel abroad to do).

Even the Multinational company Shell extensively makes use of Nigerian doctors working in Nigerian Hospitals.

What about Agagu’s son that had to be flown abroad for treatment? He did so for status reasons? What about the hundreds of Nigerians who have to raise funds each year to go to India for treatment? They are also doing so for status reasons? You sir are lying through your teeth. See article below; Nigerian Health sector is in such a wonderful state that Nigerian experts decided to waste 3 days talking about non-existent problems.

You accuse me of lying simply because I state what I consider to be fact. How will you feel if I return the compliment? I repeat my claim and I stand by it. Almost all the treatment that the people you are talking about are travelling abroad for can be gotten here in Nigeria. Agagu's son for example, as far as we know did not sustain any fractures, neither a head injury. In fact, news reports indicated he was quite well after the crash, so what was he being flown abroad for. Unlike you, I know exactly the state of Nigeria's health sector because I work in it and do not need any second-hand article to tell me about it. The truth is that most Nigerians and their leaders do not take care of their health and suffer from inferiority complex when it concerns the Nigerian health sector. A lot of the people going to India for instance are seriously being scammed out of their money by Indian hospitals. Where I work, we 've had to remedy on a number of occasions, mistakes made in Indian hospitals on patients who went there.

We at this time will not reach an agreement about the Nigerian space program so let us agree to disagree and move on. Thanks for your time.

Those who go abroad for treatment largely do so for status reasons. Almost whatever treatment they get abroad can be gotten in Nigeria. This is an established fact. You are aware that the governor of Kogi state did not travel abroad after his femoral fracture but was treated fully in Nigeria. The irony is that you are exactly like those governors you condemn. You denigrate Nigerian efforts to become self-reliant in space technology and would have us dependent on Western technology because "we are not ready". How typically condescending.

The origins of US, Russian and Chinese space programs are from the World War II German rocket program. They all stole German technology. Qian Xuesen who is arguably the father of China's space program was principally involved in "Operation Paperclip". So because they did not pay the Germans, we should follow their example and steal the technology?

Europe is essentially a tightly knit economic structure, functioning in some respects like one sovereign entity. If they decide to pool resources in space, it's fine. It doesn't make it wrong if individual states like China, Brazil, India, Iran, Israel, Nigeria, and Ghana want to go it alone.

Actually what we are doing at this stage in our space program is crawling. I look forward to the day, when Nigeria will launch its own satellites from Nigerian soil, using Nigerian-built rockets. What things need to be provided before we acquire capacity in space technology? Don't we already use technology dependent on space technology. So we should keep forking out money to Western companies because in your opinion, we are "not ready"? As far as I am concerned, this is one of the most far-sighted decisions taken by the OBJ administration to give impetus to our space program.

1. Your post sounds condescending and belittles the efforts of Nigerian engineers. It seems to me you are only interested in the narrative that suits your own particular view of Nigeria.
2. My earlier post has already highlighted the advantages to our economy and "infrastructure" of having an indigenous home grown space program. It is far better for Nigeria to use its own satellites for image acquisition, disaster monitoring, remote sensing, telecommunications etc than to pay our money to US or Europe for the same services. It is like you said "giving someone else your lunch, watching him eat it, and then asking him afterwards how it tasted. It is stupidity of the highest order"
3. A space program is most definitely not beyond Nigeria and is needed NOW.
4. Like I stated in my earlier post, the amount money spent as a fraction of Nigeria's GDP (since you insist on being so pedantic) on acquiring space technology will not prevent us from "developing infrastructure".
5. It is logical to go to the Chinese and Russians to acquire the skills for a space program since they 've had a head start.
6. Your comment about Europe shows that you probably have not heard of the European Space Agency and the Galileo global satellite navigation system program.
7. My conclusion is that your position is not under-girded by a careful consideration of the advantages of a Nigerian Space Program at this time.

It is much better that we have a home-grown space program to address these needs rather than be always dependent on and hostage to foreign technology. The initial use of Chinese and Russian technologies is expected given that they had years of a head start. A number of Nigerian engineers have already benefited by gaining skills in space technology and played a major role building NigeriaSat-X.
The development of the Nigeria Space Program is in carefully calibrated stages and over time, Nigeria will acquire indigenous launch capacity. Moreover, space is a critical, strategic, future resource and shortsightedness should not rob Nigeria of the chance to be represented there.
