TV/Movies / Jade Osiberu’s Sugar Rush Nollywood Movie Review by biyitolu(m): 7:45am On Jan 07, 2020
Sugar Rush is a Nollywood crime comedy produced by Jade Osiberu and directed by Kayode Kasum. Sugar Rush features Adesua Etomi-wellington, Bisola Aiyeola and Bimbo Ademoye.

Comedy movies seem to have more room to flounder than other genres. If the scenes for laughs are done well, it can paper over any cracks in the other aspects of the film. It might not be a masterpiece, but it would be definitely memorable. But of my expectations of Jade Osiberu’s Sugar Rush, anticipating a full-on comedy wasn’t one of them. There would always be the comedy aside – which appears in basically every Nollywood pic – but a full-on comedy wasn’t envisaged.

Sugar Rush is Kasum’s first attempt at a crime comedy and he does an impressive job directing the technical aspect of the movie. The detailing of camera angles, visual effects are a tell-tale sign of Kasum’s brilliance. Although Sugar Rush is an intentional, well-articulated piece of onscreen art, the movie is anything but a perfect comedy.

TV/Movies / Funke Akindele’s Your Excellency Review by biyitolu(m): 7:35am On Jan 07, 2020
Funke Akindele’s Your Excellency, does well, unlike the recent Nigerian ‘comedies’ – and I use comedies loosely here- that have dominated the Nigerian cinemas in recent years. The premise for Your Excellency seems like one that actual thought went into its birthing. The movie follows Chief Olalekan Ajadi – Akin Lewis – a billionaire businessman and failed presidential candidate, who goes on his fourth and final attempt at becoming president. An, unarguably, inept and unlikely candidate, Ajadi’s fortune, unexpectedly, turns for good – cheers to the third time being the charm. An incident that should have been a mishap and signaled the end of Ajadi’s dream, does the reverse and sways public admiration and support in his favor.

Like I said earlier, the premise of the movie was well-thought-out. However, in my opinion, the plotting didn’t particularly do justice to the premise. The need to infuse certain ‘Nigerian comedy tropes,’ – stuffs the audience might expect/have shown they like – derailed the plot substantially. Consequently, Funke Akindele’s Your Excellency bordered dangerously close around the tropes of ‘slapstick comedy’ but successfully manages not to be completely ruined by it.

The Delivery Boy is a film by renowned Nigerian cinematographer, Adekunle ‘Nodash’ Adejuyigbe. The film premiered at the 2018 edition of Nollywood Week Paris. Since its world premiere, The Delivery Boy has screened at various international and local film festivals.

FILM SYNOPSIS

Amir, a young orphan raised in an extremist group, runs away on the eve of a suicide mission, taking his bomb vest with him. He has a mission of his own. Before the night is over, they traverse the underbelly of the Nigerian metropolis as they search for their identities, their stolen pasts, money, and any semblance of peace they can find.

Here are 3 reasons you should consider watching The Delivery Boy.

1. It Was Awarded ‘Best Nigerian Film’ at The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) 2018

For The delivery boy to have been adjudged the Best Nigerian Film at a prestigious festival such as AFRIFF, a festival that boasts the best of the best in its selection, then the filmmakers must have done something right, making the film definitely worth seeing.

TV/Movies / Dare Olaitan’s Knock Out Blessing Review: 4 Reasons You Should See It by biyitolu(m): 8:37pm On Jan 01, 2019
Dare Olaitan’s Knock Out Blessing tells an intriguing tale about three girls on an adventure to survive, which takes them down a path that leads into the criminal sector of Nigeria’s political underworld.

Here are four reasons why I think you should see Dare Olaitan’s Knock Out Blessing.

1. It’s Dare Olaitan’s Much Anticipated Sophomore Project.

Saying that Filmmaker, Dare Olaitan, wowed us with his debut film, Ojukokoro (greed), would be stating the obvious. As at the time of the movie’s release, Dare Olaitan, fresh from film school, was an unknown name in Nollywood. All that would change starting from when Ojukokoro started showing across cinemas Nationwide. The movie was greeted with rave reviews, birthing great anticipation for his sophomore project. And now we have Dare Olaitan’s Knock Out Blessing, the project we’ve been anticipating!

2. The Movie Actually Has An Intriguing Trailer.

Just in case the first point feels hugely sentimental to you, here’s a more logical argument. As far as movie trailers are concerned, I daresay Knock Out Blessing’s is one of the best from Nollywood this year. It isn’t the “conventional” blandly pieced movie highlight reel we get many times. Quite the contrary, Knock Out Blessing’s trailer looks well thought out and properly executed. The trailer elicits emotions and successfully creates a hunger for the movie in the viewer – at least, it did for me. Well, all that is one the one hand. Right on the other hand, I do know from experience not to judge a movie solely by its trailer. But that notwithstanding, the trailer for Knock Out Blessing just makes you want to throw caution to the wind…

TV/Movies / God Calling Review: 5 Reasons You Should See The Movie by biyitolu(m): 4:45pm On Dec 22, 2018
God calling is a 2018 faith-based thriller produced by BB Sasore of “Before 30” and “Banana Island Ghost” fame. The movie opens in cinemas nationwide on 21 December, 2018. Here are 5 reasons why you should go see the movie.

1. To A Very Large Extent, The Movie Is A First Of Its Kind In Nollywood.
Let’s be clear on one thing, I mean absolutely no disrespect to the Mount Zions of this world. With that being said, properly executed faith films have been a rarity in Nollywood, especially in the cinema era. The mere fact that God Calling seeks to fill that void makes it worth seeing.

2. The Quality Of The Movie’s Special Effects Are Praiseworthy
One of the things that have heightened anticipation and critical praise for God Calling is its special effects. The movie’s trailer shows a couple of properly executed and appetite-whetting CGI and practical effects scenes from the movie.

TV/Movies / Kemi Adetiba’s King Of Boys Review:Great Premise, Passive Protagonist Sums It Up by biyitolu(m): 1:47am On Nov 15, 2018
King of Boys is a political crime thriller written and directed by Nigerian movie/music video director, Kemi Adetiba. The movie tells the story of female criminal underworld leader, Eniola Salami’s – played by Sola Sobowale – rise to power and her travails as the ‘King of Boys.’ Now, let’s review the movie.

GENRE

It’s really no news that movies other than comedies – slapsticks, majorly – are becoming a dying breed in Nigerian cinemas nowadays. King of Boys is one of such rare Nollywood films that do not fit into that booming comedy mold. Kemi Adetiba doesn’t settle for the guarantee of commercial success that these comedies, in recent times, have proven to possess. Rather, she damns the consequences and delivers a compelling political crime thriller. The movie, in this regard, was a breath of fresh air, making the writer/director more than deserving of praise.

PLOT

King of Boys was woven around a very interesting premise. The protagonist, Eniola Salami, had, up until now, successfully run the criminal underworld, discreetly handling dirty jobs for top politicians. For unrevealed reasons, she decides the next step was to get her a seat at the political table. She gets assured by her political connects that her desires would become reality. However, when time came for them to deliver on their promise, they, in characteristic fashion, disappoint Eniola. This leaves for an embittered, enraged and battle ready, Alhaja Eniola Salami as the first act of the movie concludes.

However, as the second act of the movie kicks off the plot begins to slowly veer off course. Rather than see Alhaja Eniola go to war with her newly made enemies, the plots shifts to a power tussle between her and one of the ‘boys’ she is supposed to be ‘kinging’ over, in the person of recalcitrant Makanaki, played by indigenous rapper, Reminisce.

Literature / Book Review: Binti: Home By Nnedi Okorafor by biyitolu(m): 5:05pm On Oct 11, 2018
BOOK TITLE: Binti: Home

AUTHOR: Nnedi Okorafor

PAGES: 101

YEAR OF PUBLICATION: 2017

PUBLISHER: Tom Doherty Associates

So, I finally read one of the much talked about Nnedi Okorafor fantasy/science fiction novels. Opening my Nnedi Okorafor account with the recently released Tor.com novella, Binti: Home. And, I have to say, considering how much good things I had heard, and kept hearing about Nnedi Okorafor’s works, and also how a number of her titles were available at my disposal, I feel a teeny tiny bit stupid for putting off reading a Nnedi Okorafor’s title up until now. Anyways, now I am no longer a stranger to the beautiful and mentally stimulating world of Nnedi Okorafor’s speculative fiction. For that reason, I’m gladly putting all of that stupidity behind me.

If there is something I discovered from reading this novella, it’s that watching a science-fiction movie is one thing. Reading it, on the other hand, is something entirely different. It’s a more engaging and interactive experience. With a movie, the bulk of the heavy lifting has already been done by the gracious filmmakers. The novella, however, had me piecing alternate universes together, carefully stacking detail upon detail to create a habitable alien/human ecosystem. It did not matter much that I have never been, and still am not, a believer in alien theory. With Binti: Home, Nnedi Okorafor had me stretching my otherworldly imaginative muscles. I was, all through, busy imagining extraterrestrial creatures in all their uniqueness, glory and occasional hideousness to the human eye.

Literature / Book Review: The Smart Money Woman By Arese Ugwu by biyitolu(m): 4:19pm On Oct 11, 2018
My ideal description of The Smart Money Woman by Arese Ugwu? That would be financial enlightenment meets chick flick.” How else would you have me describe the book? This book successfully interweaves cogent financial lessons and a beautiful love story. The Smart Money Woman by Arese Ugwu is a book on personal finance, yes. But, no, this book is not your everyday book on personal finance. Arese Ugwu’s unconventional approach to treating the topic makes the book stand out from amongst books on the same topic. With The Smart Money Woman, Arese Ugwu weaves practicable personal finance lessons around a properly plotted and written fictional story. The resultant effect of this is The Smart Money Woman being an interesting read.

The book chronicles the financial journey of the fictional character, Zuri, a senior manager at a real estate firm. The story begins with her realizing that, thanks to her insouciance towards managing her finance, her finances are a mess. The remainder of the book details the decisions made, both minor and major, and financial principles applied, that propelled Zuri out of the plummeting state of her finances and set her towards the glorious path of financial freedom. The author also enlists the help of Zuri’s girlfriends and a love interest to pass other important financial messages across.

A notable feature of the book is its writing style and language. The language of The Smart Money Woman is very simple, true to life and relatable. As expected, the author relies heavily on properly written English. But she also incorporates contemporary slangs and lingo, a move that makes the book...

Literature / Book Review: Born On A Tuesday By Elnathan John [download] by biyitolu(m): 3:08pm On Oct 11, 2018
The novel, Born On A Tuesday by Elnathan John, focuses majorly on the adverse effects of religious intolerance and extremism. It presumably draws its inspiration from the rising number of clashes between religious sects in some parts of the country. Born On A Tuesday also touches on the issues of greed, and excesses in political spaces, likewise selfish human interests and desires.

Set in the northwestern region of Nigeria, the plot of the novel unfolds through the viewpoint of Ahmad. Ahmad had come as a boy to Bayan Layi from Sokoto to complete his Quranic training. Upon successfully completing his training, Ahmad becomes stuck in Bayan Layi and soon becomes an almajiri. Unable to return to his family, he settles for life with the street boys where he is introduced to a life of violence and crime. Events eventually lead him to find his way back home. Sadly, returning home only leads to the realization that things have changed and will likely never return to what they used to be. Things seem to look up for Ahmad when he becomes the favored apprentice of a Sheik. But, eventually, every appearance of a better life for Ahmad disappears in an instance.

Career / These Traits Will Help You Succeed As A Blogger by biyitolu(m): 1:14am On Jul 05, 2018
Whether or not a person will succeed as a blogger is dependent on a whole lot of factors. One of those factors is possessing the required mental traits for success as a blogger. It would be counterproductive to set out on this journey without possessing the appropriate habits. What are these required traits for blogging success? Here are some of the traits that are common to successful bloggers.

1. A WILLINGNESS TO LEARN NEW STUFF
Blogging requires a lot of skill sets, many of which you probably might lack. The easy way out is to outsource for every area of your weakness, but that will cost you more. The alternative to this is to be open to learn new things and acquire new skills. Note, you don't necessarily have to become a grandmaster with these skill sets. You just need to know enough to make your blog thrive. I've had to learn a lot of things myself, and I’m all the better for it. Trust me, being willing to learn will definitely help you succeed as a blogger and, also, help your finances.

2. DON'T BE AFRAID OF BEING OPENLY VULNERABLE.
For a lot of us bloggers, we didn't start out anywhere near perfect. I know for sure that I didn't. And, for that, I could have considered my imperfections and decided to hold back, and it would have been understandable. Since proceeding with my imperfections would have meant I’d be more susceptible to criticism at best, rejection at worse. But to succeed as a blogger, you mustn’t cave to the fear of ever leaving yourself vulnerable. Sometimes, you’ll just have to damn the consequences and let your vulnerabilities show through. You must come to that place where you choose to take your chances, your vulnerabilities notwithstanding.

TV/Movies / Reasons You Shouldn't Watch Black Panther [VIDEO] by biyitolu(m): 1:44am On Mar 23, 2018
The anticipation for Marvel studio’s latest movie offering, Black Panther is, by far, the hugest I have witnessed for a movie in my lifetime. Even before the Black Panther trailer was made available, awareness had already been created to a commendable level. Word of mouth publicity had gone ahead and achieved more than some movies have achieved with properly optimized marketing campaigns. The pre-release buzz did a whole lot to create hunger and expectation in the audience for this movie.
Following the movie’s release, audience reaction was split. On the one hand, some audience members felt like the movie lived up to the hype that preceded it. Members of this camp believe so much that the pre-release buzz was very worth it. However, right, on the other hand, there were audience members who felt like the hype was too much and deceptive. Members of this camp argue that the movie did not really live up to the high-expectations it pre-release buzz had created. Which of these camps do I belong in? I want to believe the title of this video must have already given away the fact that I belong to the latter camp.
Yes, Black Panther was a great movie, but, in my personal opinion, the hype was too much. I believe, seeing how I’d never witnessed such buzz for a movie before, I ended up expecting way too much. In this video, I’ll share reasons why you should not bother about seeing Black Panther.
P.S. This is not a Black Panther review video.
