SHADOWS : #5

Janet Smith sat at the newspaper joint and browsed through the punch, absentmindedly. The baggy black jean shorts and shirt she wore did nothing to hide the fullness of her bust and the curve of her hips. She turned a page and stared straight into the face of her nemesis.
Men argued in loud voices around her. Some nearly came to blows over politics and football. She was oblivious as she looked down at the smiling face which hide a heart that was as black and more devilish than the devil. Chief James Daniels was one of the wealthiest men in the country, he had incredible power and authority.
Her smile was grim as she folded the newspaper and paid for it before leaving the stand. She headed for the bus-stop.
*****
‘Matthew, you can’t believe my purse was picked at Fadeyi bus-stop yesterday.’ Linda told her brother as they engaged in a friendly Table Tennis game at the mini court in their compound. It was a weekend.
‘What were you doing at the bus-stop? What happened to your car?’ His breath came out in short puffs as he ran to keep up with the ball. His sister had always been a great athlete.
‘I was coming from work when my car chooses to break down at that bus-stop. Evening was approaching. I called the mechanic but he was far away. I left the car there and proceeded to take a cab. It was inside the cab that I realised that my purse has been stolen. I spent less than 30 minutes at that bus-stop. It is unbelievable!’ She wasn’t breathing hard as she effortlessly returned her brother’s serve.
‘This is Lagos. Nothing is impossible. How did you pay the cabman?’ His voice was curious as he ran to catch up but his bat missed the flying white ball.
‘Mummy was already home when I arrived. I sent Adam to collect some cash for me. It was so embarrassing.’ She laughed heartily.
‘You had better be more careful in future before they steal you from the bus-stop. You won again!’ He hissed as he dropped the bat and walked out of the court.
‘You are a sour loser!’ She laughed as she followed him out of the court.
*****
“Wow! You chop lucky this evening?’ Roseline whistled through her gaped teeth as her friend emptied the purse she stole from the bus stop.
‘I chop am plenty. Na from one careless rich babe wey stand yakata for bus stop like say na her papa own am. This ATM cards go to Ebele. He fit work am to get more cash.’ Janet picked up the wad of notes, divided it into two equal halves and gave it to her friend.
‘You dash me all?’ Her jaw dropped in shock as she stared down at the raw mints of money in her hand.
‘Babe, we no fit continue this way. Look at us! Sleeping in the same room with six other guys. We get to upgrade. The time don reach.’ Her voice was lowered but Roseline caught the grimness in them.
They were hunkered down in a corner of the room which they shared with six male roommates. Survival was hard. Two guys were arguing over a bowl of Eba and okra in another corner of the room. They ignored them.
‘What is wrong? What are you up to?’ Roseline was speaking in what they termed ‘Serious English’ between them.
‘It is time to move out of this slum. This is the key to our freedom.’ She pulled the rumbled newspaper out of her back pocket and smoothed it out. The smiling face of Chief James Daniels stared back at them. Her fingers trembled and her face tightened into a cold mask.
‘Who is he?’ Roseline’s voice dropped lower still. She took her friend’s cold hands in hers and rubbed it.
‘One day, I will tell you.’ She struggled to firm her voice. ‘I need to see ‘black eye’ first. I can’t do anything without his assistance.’ She met her friend’s worried gaze and winked. Roseline was about to speak when the door opened and she kept her mouth shut.
A short thickset man came in, whose left eyes was covered with a dark patch.
‘Black eye!’ The occupants of the room hailed him.
‘Yo! How una dey? Wey the others?’ He flashed teeth which had gone brown with tobacco, in a grin as he looked around the room. They knew the look. They all came to attention and faced him. ‘Job dey oo. Big money going to private bank. Monday morning. You game?’
‘How we wan take do am? We go meet them for road or na for bank.’ Donald, popularly known as Don rubbed his hands together with glee, the half-eaten eba he was dragging with his roommate, forgotten.
‘Na for inside building go dey better as security go don relax small then. Na so my informat talk sha. I go dey update you as parole dey go.’ He scratched his shin as he met their gazes one by one.
‘Wetin be the name of the bank? Who own am?’ Janet pulled out a rumpled cigarette from her pocket and put it between her lips.
‘Sadona Bank Plc. Na chief James Daniels get better part of it but na the son dey manage am sha. You no am?’ His eyes lit with interest as he noted the frozen shock on her face.
‘Come make I see you.’ She exchanged glances with her friend before rolling to her feet and dragged black eye out of the room.
*****
Mathew Daniels was running late this Monday morning. He had spent the Sunday at a friend’s birthday party where liquor was the only liquid available with finger foods. He was feeling high by the time he got home, close to mid-night. His girlfriend, Charity had let herself into his apartment and was waiting in bed when he staggered into the bedroom. It was a wild night which left him feeling tired and shaky in the morning but he was smiling when he walked into the bank.
An hour later, he was standing beside a cashier to hasten up a transaction for one of their important clients, Adigwe and Sons limited when a young lady walked in. He was sure she was a woman because despite the baggy shorts, t-shirt and low hanging hat pulled over her face, she had one of the most curvaceous figures he had ever come across. Blood rushed to his lower body and he found himself crossing his legs to hide the slight budge in his expensive charcoal black pant trouser.
‘There is an issue on the account sir.’ The cashier called his attention to the screen.
‘What is the problem?’ Get a grip, Mat! He mentally chided himself as he struggled to give his complete attention to the cashier’s explanation.
The next moment, a gunshot rang out. The banking hall was thrown into pandemonium. Mathew and cashier jumped and hide under the cashier’s work station. He wondered what happened to the alarm and security system in the banking hall. Fury and fear battled in his mind until fury won!
‘Where are these security men for God’s sake?’ He shouted as he jumped to his feet, even as the young cashier tugged at his trouser leg.
‘Mr Daniels, they have not gone yet. Please keep your voice down.’ The cashier pleaded in a hushed voice.
*****
The robbery operation took less than thirty minutes to be completed. Janet was the last to leave the banking hall. She turned when she heard the cashier’s voice and realised who the young well-dressed man was. Resentment and bitterness burned through her soul.
He could almost hear the thought forming as she raised her gun and aimed it at him.
‘Don’t do it please!’ He raised his hands in a plea as his voice dropped to a desperate whisper. No sound came out but he fell with a sharp scream as his right ankle seemed to caught fire.
She slipped out of the hall and disappeared.
He was rushed to the hospital immediately the banking hall was cleared of immediate danger.
*****
The party was in full swing. All sort of illegals and drinks were available. The booty had been shared. Everyone was in a cheerful mood. Janet sat apart from the crowd and smoke with a brooding look on her face.
‘Sup babe? A penny for your thought?’ Roseline sat down beside her friend with a glass of champagne.
‘I need to get out of this place as soon as possible. I need my own place to achieve my goal.’ She dropped the half-smoked cigar and stepped over it.
‘I will come with you. When are we leaving?’ She took a tiny sip of the glass, not fully trusting the content of the glass.
‘We will leave soon. By the way, go and throw away that shit in your hand before you got stoned.’ Janet jutted her chin at the glass cup in her hand with an amused smile.
‘I should have known better. Stupid guys! I will meet you outside the house in a minute.’
‘Do that before they took us for the girls they planned to have orgies with. They are fucking useless already.’ Janet was laughing as she weaved her way around the exuberant dancers, groping each other and made it out of the house.
*****
‘You are a lucky young man. You could have lost the use of that leg forever.’ Doctor Sani Abubakar told him as he came into his private ward, closely followed by his parents.
‘Thank you, Doctor. I appreciate your timely treatment.’ He dared not move his right ankle in fear of the radiating pain that had plagued him since the gun-shot.
‘You are welcome. Chief, I will be in my office in case you need to see me. Excuse me.’ The doctor went out of the room and closed the door gently behind him.
‘How are you feeling, son?’ His mother ran her hands and eyes all over him with obvious concern.
‘I am fine, mum. I thought she will kill me. I am thanking God for the narrow escape.’ He shuddered with dread as he recalled the terrifying moment all over again.
‘It was a clean job. An inside job no doubt. The security system was deactivated for the period of robbery operation. Several of the security team including the head and some staffs in the IT department had disappeared off the surface of the earth.’ Chief’s voice vibrated with barely restrained anger.
‘I have a friend who is an expert in security. He may still be able to salvage some of the clip or at least hunt down some of the culprits. We lost a lot, right?’ His voice was low with misery.
‘Yes, we did. I am sure it will run into billions but we are insured. I will hunt down the culprits or whoever is behind this, even if it will take my last breath.’ Chief’s smile was grim.
His wife tried not to cringe at the tone and thanked her star she was not at the receiving end.

SHADOWS : #4
‘Guy, I am in a hot can of soup! I am so confused.’ Francis lamented to his friend. It was Thursday evening, two days to the wedding day. Olayinka was spending the night at his friend’s place. They just came back from where they went shopping for their wedding suits.
‘Are you sure she has a child for you? She was probably lying to stop the wedding.’ Olayinka ventured tentatively.
‘We had an affair when we were in school. She was just out of secondary school then. She got pregnant. I told her to go and get rid of the pregnancy. I practically threw her out of my room that fateful day. I don’t know if she kept it or not. What am I going to tell Toyin now?’ He turned to his friend with a look of abject misery.
Well, Toyin has something to tell you too. What an irony life is! Olayinka sighed quietly.
‘Calm down, Francis. It happened in the past and you have no power over what took place in the past.’
‘She is our best-lady. She may have a plan up her sleeve.’ He was genuinely worried.
‘Stop being paranoid. She can’t be that bad. I will meet her and talk to her. She is human after all.’
*****
‘Is she the one you are talking about?’ Olayinka was shocked to realize Ibiyemi was his friend’s baby mama. They were able to trick her out of Toyin’s house on the pretense that Olayinka’s interested in her best-lady. Toyin was the happy match-maker, she was thrilled at the prospect of their best-man and best-lady hooking up, probably for good but Ibiyemi knew better.
‘Good evening Sir.’ Ibiyemi curtseyed to her boss.
‘How are you, Yemi? What a small world it is! I didn’t know we are attending the same wedding.’ Olayinka smiled at her.
‘You guys knew each other?’ Francis looked from one face to the other in amazement.
‘Of course, we do. She is my personal assistant at our Ilorin branch office.’ His voice turned thoughtful as something occurred to him. ‘Ibiyemi, are you saying Francis is Enitan’ s father?’
‘Yes, sir.’ Her tone was solemn.
‘He exists truly? You mean I have a son?’ Francis looked shell-shocked as he stared at Ibiyemi.
‘Of course, you have a son, you bastard!’ Olayinka was livid with rage as he turned on his friend. The latter looked as if he wanted to faint. ‘The first time I met Ibiyemi, she was in labor with your child! She was disowned by her parent because she got pregnant for you! She was staying at her Aunt’s place and was alone at home when she went into labor! Only God knows what would have happened to her and the innocent child if I hadn’t come across her on the roadside that day.’ Francis had never been at the receiving end of his friend’s cold anger before. He felt ashamed and humbled!
Ibiyemi crossed her arms self-consciously and kept staring at the floor but drops of tears fell on the sand in front of her.
‘I am sorry. Man, I don’t know what else to say but I am truly sorry. It all happened in the past when I wasn’t ready for commitment. I don’t even know how it happens.’ Francis lowered himself unto the front the seat of the car and covered his face in frustration.
‘Yemi, you can go. We will see later.’ Olayinka dismissed her.
‘Thank you, sir.’ Yemi turned on her heels.
‘You will have to invite Toyin to our hotel room tomorrow and talk to her. That is before the bachelor eve start. You need to come clean before you tied the knot if you want peace in your home.’ Olayinka turned to face his friend. The latter sighed heavily.
‘I am scared. She has every right to walk out of this relationship. What will I do if she does?’ His eyes were full of worry.
‘You will leave, Mr. Playboy. I don’t think she will walk out though. She may be angry but she won’t take a walk.’
‘You sound so sure of that.’
‘I am sure.’ Olayinka’s smile was full of irony.
*****
Toyin was amused as she made her way towards her fiancé’s hotel suite. They would be getting married the following day, so she wondered what was so important that he needed to see her tonight when he should be having fun with his friends. How did I get so lucky? Her face was a mask of happiness.
Yemi had been close-mouthed about the nature of her meeting with Francis and his best man. All effort to make her talk had proved abortive. She had also left the house with a flimsy excuse shortly before she did.
Sooner or later, she would get to the root of all her secrecy. Maybe she was making out with France’s gorgeous friend, Olayinka. Who knows? That guy was one hot dude. She sighed in memory as she reached for the door handle and pushed.
Men are pigs. She thought fondly as she stepped over a tray of left-over food and drinks, discarded shoes and a woman’s wrap.
‘Where are you, boo?’ She headed for the bedroom and paused in strides. Groans and moans were coming from the bedroom. Who is that? Where is Francis for God’s sake? She wanted to turn on her heels but curiosity got the best of her. She tiptoed to the door. It was left ajar and she notched it slightly open. Every living nerve in her body froze in shock!
Francis and Yemi were both naked on the bedroom rug. Yemi’s legs were hanging in the air while Francis’s head was buried between her white thighs.
‘Oh my God!’ She slides to the floor in a dead faint!
*****
‘It is Toyin. I am doomed.’ Her voice penetrated his senses and his head jerked up like a lion sensing a prey close by. He saw her body, lying awkwardly on the floor and jumped to his feet.
‘Is she dead? Oh my God!’ He picked her up and cuddled her on his laps. Tears welled up in his eyes.
‘She is not dead. She just fainted.’ Yemi’s voice was calm as she held out a bowl of water and sprinkled it on her friend. She was already dressed up in jeans and a t-shirt.
He frowned at her. Where did that come from? She was wearing a black scanty pantie and a bra that barely covered her nipples under the thin robe when she came in less than an hour ago. He raised his gaze to her cool eyes and they held for several humming seconds.
‘You planned all this?’ His voice came out in a croak as he gestured towards the bottle of champagne she brought with her and her discarded underwear.
‘Yes, I did. You fell for it, didn’t it? You can’t help but wonder what I taste like after all these years. We both enjoyed that, didn’t we?’ Her laughter was hard and brittle. Francis closed his eyes in despair. Toyin stirred in his arms and opened her eyes.
‘Get out, Yemi. I don’t want to see you again in my life. You are evil!’ His voice broke and he swallowed hard.
‘Your sentiment is returned in equal dose.’ Her eyes met Toyin’s confused ones briefly, she considered apologizing to her but realized it would spoil the purpose of the whole charade. That wedding will not take place tomorrow. She turned on her heels and walked out.
He laid her carefully on the bed and picked up a robe to cover his nudity. Her memory came back in a flash and she rolled to her feet.
‘You are a bastard, Francis Adebiyi Adebowale! How dare you? Out of all the girls in the universe, it is my friend and the best lady you are smooching on my wedding eve!’ She flew into his face and scratched him. He tried to hold her but she was as slippery as a heel, scratching, clawing and biting him everywhere she could reach.
‘Stop it, Toyin! Please! I am begging. Will you please listen to me?’ His voice was pleading, even as he tried to hold her.
‘I hate you! You will never know peace. You took away the best day of my life, Francis. I curse the day I meet you.’ She pointed at him as tears welled up in her eyes and ran down her flawless face shamelessly. She picked up her handbag and headed for the door.
‘Toyin, wait, please. Let me explain.’ He reached for her hand and she gave him a resounding slap on his cheek. He staggered backward and watched her leave his room, his life.
How did my life turn this way? He stared bleakly at the door, oblivious to the several bruises and nicks on his body that were beginning to well up with blood. He fell to his knees, held his head in his palm and wept like a baby.
*****
He was not surprised to meet her at her desk on Monday morning. He came to work early purposefully to see her before the other staffs start resuming for the day.
Her heart skipped a bit and started thumping in her chest when she saw him standing on the doorway. Her expression was completely blank as she got to her feet.
‘Good morning sir.’
‘What is good about the morning? You have done your worse right?’ Olayinka walked up to her face. She stepped back and refused to meet his gaze.
‘I don’t know what you are talking about.’
‘Excuse me?’ He gave her an incredulous look. She gave a nonchalant shrug and stared at the floor. He rolled his eyes in exasperation.
‘How does your action make your life better, Yemi? Why did you do it?’ Silence. He heaved out a breath to control his anger. For the first time in his life, he felt like hitting a woman. ‘You have no answer, right? This is exactly one of the reasons I dislike women. They are nothing but evil schemers and hypocrite.’ He hissed as he stormed to his room.
‘Do you want me to resign, sir?’ Her voice stopped him in his strides. He turned around and stared daggers at her.
‘If you have gotten another job, go ahead and resign. Foolish woman!’ He stormed away.
She sat down and heaved a sigh of relieve.

SHADOWS : #3

‘I hope she is not having an upset stomach? What has she eaten for God’s sake?’ Francis sounded worried as he stared after her departing figure.
‘Maybe you should check on her.’ Olayinka could bet his life she wasn’t having an upset stomach. Rather, she was planning how best to handle the situation and kept him silent forever. He sat down slowly and took a deep breath.
‘Excuse me.’ Francis left the room.
Yinka closed his eyes and sighed. He remembered every detail of their meeting as if it was yesterday.
*****
It was his first night in town. He just returned home after his M. Science programme in the United Kingdom. After the initial thrill of seeing his father and only sister, Oyindamola, he was feeling bored and restless. He was sitting down at the swimming pool terrace, contemplating what to do, when his friends arrived to take him out. They took him to an exclusive all-night club in the heart of Surulere, Lounge 38.
‘We have chartered some special girls just for you.’ Adeniran told him as they passed round goblets of drinks.
He wasn’t sure what else was mixed with the drinks but he didn’t care. He figured a man died just once. He took a large sip and it went straight into his bloodstream. He felt light-headed and energized all at once.
‘Bring them on. I am ready for the babes.’ Olayinka’s grin had turned sloppy.
‘They will screw your brain out tonight.’ Emeka added as he burst into laughter.
The four girls arrived, obviously meant for the four friends and cat-walked into the room. Soft whistles of admiration rented to the air. The girls aimed for the guys with a single-minded concentration which had the other men in the room salivating.
‘Hi, celebrant. My name Oluwatoyin. My friends call me T-girl.’ She sat on his lap in her micro-mini skirt.
To his consternation and excitement, he found out she wore not a stitch of undies under the skirt. Her inner thighs rubbed over the bulge in his trousers and he nearly came instantly.
‘Damn! You are naughty.’ He grabbed her waist to raise her up.
She laughed softly as she leaned back and kissed his neck, grinding her pet little behind on his engorged member. He groaned loud!
It was a night which lingered in his memory for a very long time!
*****
‘Hey, guy. Where did you go?’ Francis snapped his fingers in front of his face. He jolted back to reality.
‘Don’t mind me. I was thinking about a contract I have been pursuing.’ He shrugged. His eyes met Toyin’s where she huddled beside her fiancée. Her eyes dropped away from his. The image of her nude body in various sex positions came unbidden into his mind and he nearly had an erection. He crossed his legs.
‘It is okay. I want to go and get medications for Toyin down the road. Sit down. I will be right back.’ Francis’s voice brooked no argument as he picked up his t-shirt and left the room.
Toyin sat directly opposite Olayinka with a heavy sigh. A heavy silence hung in the room for several humming seconds.
‘Are you still a call girl?’ His voice was low but she heard him clearly.
‘No! I can never do that to Francis. You may find it difficult to believe but I do love him.’ Her voice was pleading.
‘Where did you meet?’ His voice was resonated with curiosity.
‘We met at a mutual friend’s wedding. It was an instant attraction between us. I never knew it will lead to marriage. I love him! I truly do!’
‘He worships the ground you walk on. He is madly in love with you. It will break his heart to find out about your past. I will suggest you tell him yourself before he finds out from an external source.’
‘I am scared. If I do, I am afraid it will destroy his trust in me.’ She hung her head in shame.
‘I have given you my two cents. You have nothing to fear from me. He is not exactly a saint either.’ He gave a nonchalant shrug.
‘Thank you, Olayinka. God bless you for me.’ She crawled on her knees to clasp his arm in gratitude.
‘Please go back to your seat before I grabbed you. The memory of our time together keeps rotating in my head.’ He growled at her. She jumped back in fright. They both burst into laughter.
*****
‘T-girl, someone is at the door. Go and open, please. I am not getting out of this bed unless it is absolutely necessary.’ Ibiyemi buried her head under the pillow and pulled up the duvet against the blowing cold air from the air condition.
It was two days to Francis and Toyin’s wedding. Ibiyemi had been in Lagos for almost one week, helping her friend to prepare for her big day. Her son was staying with her mother at home.
‘Who is it?’ Toyin grumbled as she staggered out of bed.
‘Open the door before I break it down.’ A gruff but suspiciously familiar voice responded.
She hesitated briefly before opening the door. It was Francis. He was grinning from ear to ear. She jumped into his arms and he swirled her around in his big arms.
‘I have missed you so much.’ His arms tightened around her slightly. She giggled.
‘You have only been away for a few days nau. I miss you too anyway.’ She gave him a smacking kiss on his cheek. ‘Put me down , please. I want you to meet my friend. She is also my best lady.’
‘I will be glad to. I am glad I was finally able to get away from work. I am so sorry I have not been around to assist with the preparation. It was Olayinka who had been working tirelessly on my behalf.’ He complained as he sat down on the seat.
‘Sorry, dear. At least, you are here now. Excuse me” She left the room and he made himself at home.
*****
‘Wake up, sleepy head! My fiancée is around.’ Toyin grabbed the duvet and pulled it away from her friend’s face. The latter groaned.
‘I will meet him later. I am tired, T-girl. I need to sleep a bit longer before we go out to finalize the shopping list today.’ Ibiyemi turned away.
‘I appreciate your assistance, Yemi. I really do. Come and help me keep him company while I take my bath. I will sit on your stomach if you don’t get up now.’ She went to pull the curtain blind. Sunlight flooded into the room.
Ibiyemi sat up with a hiss.
‘Has anyone told you lately you are a royal pain in the butt?’
‘I know. Thank you. You are a darling.’ She gave her a noisy kiss on the cheek as she pushed her friend out of the room.
*****
‘Sweetheart, meet my friend and best lady, Ibiyemi. Yemi, this is my one and only, Francis. Kindly keep him company while I quickly take my bath.’ She didn’t notice the shocked expression on their individual faces as she chatted on and escaped from the room immediately.
The sleep cleared immediately from Ibiyemi’ s face as she stared with absolute shock at the father of her illegitimate child!
Francis got to his feet on legs that threatened to fold on itself. He felt numb to the bone and different thoughts clashed in his brain. How come? How could this happen at this time? He closed his eyes as if in a dream and opened it again. She was standing right in front of him in a mini house robe, her lips curled in a snarl.
‘I am not going to disappear, Francis Adebiyi Adebowale. It is just a wish. So we could meet again? God is indeed on the throne.’ Her voice dripped pure sarcasm.
‘Yemi, please don’t start this right now. I love Toyin! I really want to marry her.’ His voice was pleading. His words caused a heavy pang in her chest. She rubbed the middle of her breasts unconsciously.
‘I won’t stop you from marrying her. Your relationship with other women is none of my business. However, my son has a right to know his father. He is seven years old!’ She announced with something close to glee.
He sat down abruptly as he stared at her.
‘You didn’t abort the pregnancy? Are you sure?’ His voice came out in a croak.
‘Do you want to see his picture?’
‘No! Not now. Dear God! This is a nightmare. Someone should please wake me up.’ He buried his head in his hands.
Bastard! That is what you are, Francis. I will see how you get married while I am still around here. She stared at him with a burning hatred she never knew she harbored deep inside her.
‘Hey, guys. How is it going?’ Toyin bustled into the room, oblivious to the tension in the room. Francis looked up with a waned smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
‘Your guy is famished. You had better get him something to eat.’ Ibiyemi flashed her a radiant smile as she left the room.
‘Darling, what will you like to eat?’ She heard her friend’s voice, asking and gritted her teeth in fury. She slammed straight into the bedroom. To her horror, she burst into tears and wept as if her heart will break!

SHADOWS #2

Omolola was off-duty the day Ademola was discharged from the hospital but she came around to pick him up in her well-used Toyota Corolla 2005 model car. Adedoyin and Chinwe were on duty when she got to the nurse station.
‘Where is the cheerful smile this afternoon, Adedoyin?’
‘I am in trouble, Nurse Lola. I am pregnant.’ Tears filled her eyes as she stared at her senior colleagues. Her lower lips trembled.
‘How could that be? You didn’t use protection with your boyfriend?’ She was worried about the young girl. She glanced at Chinwe, who lowered her gaze and stared at her feet.
‘We did. I can never be that careless. I don’t know what went wrong. It probably burst or something. My father will kill me with his bare hands.’ She covered her face as she sobbed quietly.
‘Condoms are 98 percent effective in preventing pregnancy when used consistently and correctly. They are scientifically porous. This means you are still at risk of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Celibacy is still the safest method of prevention, especially when you are not married or in a relationship with one faithful partner.’ Omolola’s gaze moved from one friend to another.
‘Nurse Lola, what are we going to do? Are you suggesting we should go for tests?’ Chinwe’s eyes were wide with fear.
‘That is the next step for the two of you. Whatever the result is, it is not the end of the world. Stop looking so sad.’
‘It is the beginning of disaster for me. Tunde refused to accept the pregnancy. He accused me of infidelity and denied being the father of the baby.’ Adedoyin murmured in a low voice.
‘She is thinking of abortion. I advised her against it because there was a complication during the last one she did. She doesn’t want to listen to me. Please talk to her, nurse Lola. She is her mother’s only child. Her father has another wife and other kids. Don’t turn the poor woman into a barren.’ Chinwe glared at her friend who glared back stubbornly.
Bitterness rose up in her, followed by deep sadness and anger as she stared at the young woman. Life has not dealt with her yet.
‘Why do you want to throw away your life? Why are you so wicked you want to turn your mother into a childless woman at her age? What is the problem, Adedoyin?’
‘I can’t move around with a bastard in my stomach. It is too embarrassing.’ Her voice was sulky.
‘Oh? It is such a little price to pay for your foolishness. Why didn’t you think of that when you are doing acrobats at the back of Tunde’s Car?’
‘You heard that?’ Her jaw dropped in incredulity as she stared at the older woman. Chinwe snickered into the back of her palm. She turned to glare at her.
‘I am not deaf. Go home and talk to your mother. She may scold you but she won’t turn you away.’ She paused as she turned and saw Ademola, standing a few feet away. He had obviously been discharged and had been waiting since she was talking to the girls. Adedoyin hung her head in shame. ‘Go to the market and get yourself a beautiful wedding ring. No one will have the audacity to question you.’
‘Wow! You are the bomb, Nurse Lola. I love you.’ Adedoyin launched against her and hugged her tightly. Omolola hugged her back and patted her bum.
‘That is my girl!’
‘Nurse Lola, I learned Mr. Ademola is going to your house.’ Chinwe shifted her seat.
‘This hospital grapevine has been busy, right? The two of you are the fuel. Busybodies! Get out of my sight.’ She turned towards the entrance and beckoned to Ademola. The two girls blushed.
‘Good afternoon Sir!’
‘Good afternoon, Ladies! Thank you for the hospitalities. Have a beautiful afternoon’ He curtseyed as he walked out with a single crutch.
*****
‘Welcome to my humble abode, Doctor Ademola!’ Omolola smiled as she walked into her sitting room. She stayed alone in a duplex on Kaduna Road at Adewole Housing Estate.
‘Thank you. It is good to be in a home at last. There is no place like home.’ He looked around at the stylishly but moderately furnished room.
‘The kitchen is down here. We will make a roaster for grocery shopping and cooking. I will put you in the room downstairs because of your health. There is an adjoined bathroom and toilet right here.’ She took him to his room.
It was a big room. The bed was already made-up. Sunlight streamed into the room from the open window. He hobbled to the bed and sat down.
‘Can we postpone the rest of the tour , please? As for grocery and cooking, I will pay you as much as I can as soon as I receive my first pay. No negotiation. I am not choosy either. I will be your perfect host, I promise.’
‘That is easier said than done. No problem. We will see how it goes. You really need to go get some wears as well. I will open a debtor book for you.’ She was teasing.
‘No matter the amount of cash I use to settle my debt, I can never repay your kindness in my life. By the way, have you always stayed in this big house alone?’
‘No. I used to stay with my Aunty and her family. Her husband got a study visa for his Masters' programme at a Canadian University and left with his family. Have you submitted your application?’ He was aware of the abrupt change of topic but decided to let it go. For the moment.
‘Yes, the medical director accepted my application under the circumstance but it was temporary as you said. It is better than doing nothing. I am resuming on Monday.’ He shrugged.
‘Half a bread is better than nothing. What do you want to do now? Do I take you shopping or you want to eat first?’
‘I will take my bath. Give me a few minutes.’
She walked to the kitchen to put a plastic of soup in the wardrobe. She knocked on his room door minutes later and pushed the door open when she heard no response. He was fast asleep on the bed!
*****
Adegbola Construction Company’s building office was always quiet and serene in the morning before her noisy colleagues started trouping in. It was her favorite time of the day as she was usually left to her thought while she worked on back-logs from the previous day. Her ringing tone broke the eerie silence. She jolted as she patted her chest and laughed nervously.
‘Who the hell is that for God’s sake?’ She hissed as she picked up her ringing phone. It was her secondary school, classmate and best friend, Toyin. They got separated after secondary school and met again in Lagos last week during a business trip with her boss, Olayinka Adegbola.
‘Hi, Toyin. How are you doing?’ Ibiyemi Akintola’s voice exuded the smile on her face.
‘I am super fine, Yemi. Guess what?’ Toyin paused dramatically.
‘What is it? Spill it joor!’ Yemi rolled her eyes skyward, even as she giggled.
‘I am getting married. Francis proposed last night.’ She yelled into the phone.
‘Wow! Yippee! I am so happy for you. This is great news.’ She bounced excitedly in her seats.
‘Thank you, babe. I want you as my best lady. We will rock that wedding.’
‘I am your girl, babe. Just keep me updated. Congratulations once again, dear!’
‘Thank you, dear. I will do that. Kindly extend my greetings to your little boy. I hope to see him at the wedding?’
‘I don’t think so. He won’t allow me to rock that wedding the way I like. Who knows? Mr. Right may be hanging somewhere in that party. We will see how it goes anyway.’
They were both laughing as they ended the call.
Yemi put her phone down and stared into space. Her childhood friend was getting married. When will it be my turn? Do men even looked at after-one single mothers like me? A lump formed in her throat and she blinked away unshed tears.
‘Yemi, are you alright?’ Her boss, Olayinka tapped on her desk gently. She blinked him into focus and rose to her feet.
‘Good morning sir.’
‘Good morning, Olayemi. Please sit down. What is the problem? Is it the little man?’ His voice was filled with concern.
‘No sir. Enitan is doing perfectly fine. I received a call from a friend which left me a bit upset.’ She gave a subconscious shrug.
‘Don’t worry. Everything will be fine. Always thank God for the gift of life.’ He rubbed her shoulder casually. She gave a faint smile. ‘Please arrange a meeting with those contractors this morning. We need to meet before we commence work on the new site.’ He hefted his briefcase as he headed to his office.
‘Yes, sir.’ She mumbled as she dropped into her seat and reached for her desk phone.
*****
‘Tell me what I heard about you is not correct, Francis. The confirmed playboy is getting married?’ Yinka stared at his friend across the room. His friend burst into hilarious laughter.
‘You are mad finally, Yinka. Come inside and close my door.’ He went to the mini fridge in the corner of the sitting room and brought out two sweating cans of beer.
‘It is true, right?’ He caught the can of beer that was thrown at him, neatly with one hand and popped it open. He drank deeply.
‘Yes, it is true. I am marrying the best woman in the world. She made me happy, Yinka. I didn’t know I can ever meet anyone who will make me change my mind about commitment but she did it by being herself.’ His friend’s smile turned dreamy. Yinka groaned and shuddered.
‘Stop! I have gotten the message loud and clear. I know it is that stupid bug called love. It gives me the creeps.’ He shuddered again. Francis roared with laughter.
‘It is alright. You are still going to be my best man either you like it or not.’
‘I don’t have any problem with that. Is it not to wear suits and posed with the groom? When are we meeting this paragon of beauty, the woman goddess who pushed my friend into Love slave?’
‘You will meet her today. She will be visiting any moment from now. That reminds me, how about Lara, your live-in lover back in the UK then? Are you guys still keeping in touch with each other?’ Francis sprawled out on the rug.
‘No, we have lost contact with each other. The relationship was fizzling out already before I left the state. The chemistry was no longer there. The distance helped it die a natural death.’ Yinka shrugged as he took a big gulp from Can Beer.
‘I know you are not a womanizer but you find it difficult to trust women. It is what you fear most that you end up attracting at the end of the day. There are loads of great women out there, Yinka. Take it from a chronic playboy.’ Francis smiled at his friend.
Yinka rolled his eyes skyward. ‘I never thought the day will come that you will be preaching matrimony to me. Chai! Love is a bastard.’ His friend burst into laughter. ‘How are you so sure she is the right woman you want to spend the rest of your life with?’
‘Loving someone is a risk. You just have to step out on your faith and have the belief she is the right one for you. I am willing to take the risk.’ The doorbell rang and interrupted their conversation. ‘Come in. The door is not locked.’
The door opened. A curvy petite lady, clad in casual dress walked in.
‘T-girl, how are you?’ Francis vaulted to his feet and engulfed her in a warm hug.
This guy is truly besotted. We will see how long this will last. Women are the ficklest thing on this earth. It is a foolish man who keeps them around permanently. His smile was tinged with cynicism as he took a long sip.
‘Toyin, meet my friend. He is also our best man. His name is Olayinka Adegbola. This is the woman who makes me happy.’ Francis pulled his woman closer as the latter got to his feet.
‘T-girl, how do you do?’ Olayinka struggled to keep his expression neutral as he held her warm palm in his and shook it warmly. He knew her! Her gaze widened when their eyes connected. Memories flashed between them.
Oh No! Dear God! Don’t let karma catch up with me this way. What do I do now? Anguish filled her heart as she struggled to keep her smile in place.
‘I am fine.’ She stepped back on knees that threatened to fold beneath her. ‘I am pressed. I need to use the restroom. Excuse me, guys!’ She made her escape from the room very fast.

SHADOWS

ONE

It was an idle morning at the nurse station in the male ward of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. The two young female nurses on the morning duty were busy, talking and catching up with each other’s social lives when Nurse Lola Adewunmi walked in with a patient file.
‘Good morning, Nurse Lola.’ They chorused. She nodded in acknowledgment as she flipped through the file, catching up on her patient’s medical record.
‘The party was great. I can’t remember the last time I had such fun. After taking two shots of tequila mixed with an energy drink, it was as if the bolts in my muscles were released. I danced as if there was no tomorrow. Tunde’s undivided attention also went straight to my head. The guy was a great dancer.’ Adedoyin’s voice was tinged with excitement as she bounced on the wooden seat.
‘Hmm. May I conclude that you guys eventually ended up in bed or in the car or inside the restroom? Which is it?’ Chinwe’s eyes danced with mischief. Adedoyin giggled girlishly.
‘What do you expect? He handled my body like a pro he was right at the back of his car.’ She raised four fingers.
‘Four rounds? In one night? Na sleep sure pass today.’ Chinwe’s eyes widened in amazement.
‘I am not sure how we got to his house but when I wake up in the morning, we were right in bed together. He eventually drove me to my house at mid-day where I fell into a deep dreamless sleep.’ She sighed with contentment.
‘You are one lucky babe. I wish I have such a lucky day. My guy is out of town. I slept throughout my off-day after doing my laundry.’
‘My dear, the stress on this job is too much. All work and no play make Adedoyin a dull girl.’
‘You are right. I hope you remember the raincoat in the throes of unbridled passion? It is very important.’
‘Importanter self!’ They both giggled helplessly.
‘Nurses, have you seen the new physician? He should be resuming today.’ Lola interrupted their conversation.
‘No. Who is he? Where is he coming from?’ Adedoyin was curious.
‘I don’t have his name but he is replacing Doctor Akpan.’ Her response was absent-minded as she mentally reviewed the number of patients she would be visiting for the morning round, provided there was no emergency requesting her attention.
She was a Senior Nursing sister at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and presently worked at the male ward.
‘What does he look like? We need new faces around here, especially the male species.’ Chinwe winked at her companion.
‘Are you interested in his physical or professional trait?’ Lola raised an eyebrow to her. Both girls tittered like silly school girls. ‘Do you ever discuss other things apart from men? They are not worth your attention as far as I am concerned. If you want to know what he looks like, you will have to wait until he resumes.’ She picked up more files and turned on her heels.
‘Matron Bello is around. I will suggest you postpone your gist and get on with your morning duties.’ She added as she walked away.
‘Yes, ma’am.’ They both jumped down from the stool and went into different part of the building.
*****
Omolola was half-way through her morning ward round when the sound of a siren announced the arrival of an ambulance. She glanced through the window and saw the medics wheeled out the accident victim. It was a single male soaked to his skin in his own blood. He was taken straight into the emergency ward for immediate surgery.
She wondered fleetingly if he would survive the accident, even as she went back to her duty and promptly forgot about the whole scene.
*****
‘Hush! Common, you are a big boy!’ Omolola teased the teenage boy who was rubbing his bum where he just took an injection. His eyes shone with unshed tears while a single tear rolled down the side of his face.
‘I hate injections.’ His voice was gruff as he turned away.
‘Sit down, dear. Take a deep breath.’ She pushed him down unto a seat.
‘Thank you, ma’am.’ His voice was shaky as he dropped into the seat and closed his eyes.
‘Nurse Lola, are you through? Matron Bello needs your urgent attention.’ Chinwe poked her head into the injection room.
‘I will be out in a moment. Thank you.’ She checked the files on the desk and realized the young boy was her last patient for now.
‘Take your time, dear. I will send your mother in to fetch you.’ She laid a hand briefly on his shoulder, he nodded in acknowledgment and she left the room.
*****
‘The new physician hasn’t resumed yet. I will call Doctor Ahmad at LUTH and find out what is going on. Our doctors are over-worked as it is now.’ Matron Bello complained as she walked into her cubicle. Omolola smiled and waited.
‘Do you remember the accident victim from the collision with a tanker driver who was brought in last week?’ Matron Bello linked her fingers on her ample bosom.
‘Yes, ma’am. His surgery was successful, isn’t it?’
‘Yes, it was. He is recuperating quite well but we have an issue on ground.’ She paused dramatically. Omolola almost rolled her eyes in exasperation but she merely inclined her head and waited for her to continue. ‘He has lost his memory. He can’t remember anything up till he opened his eyes after the surgery. Unfortunately, his identity got lost when the car caught fire a few minutes after he was rescued.’ She sighed heavily.
‘That is so sad. How is he going to pay his hospital bills?’ Omolola’s voice was full of empathy.
‘You are always practical. You have no sentimental bone in your body.’ She grinned at the younger woman.
‘Well, someone needs to pay the bill.’ Her lips curved up in an answering smile.
‘You are right. The management is interested in his case. I guess that was because it has been a while we treated any case of Amnesia, especially one resulting from an accident. They will take care of the bills for now. I am putting you in charge of the patient. I want you to work closely with Doctor Umoru. He is his attending physician.’ She lifted up a file and gave it to her.
‘There is no name on his file.’ Omolola stared down at the file, a frown creasing her face.
‘That is because we have no name for him yet. I am sure you will work out something between the two of you.’ Her voice was dismissive as she turned to the system on her desk.
Omolola turned on her heels and walked out.
*****
‘Nurse Lola!’ Adedoyin was breathless as she walked up to her briskly.
‘Yes, Adedoyin. How may I help you?’ Omolola was about to open the door to her patient’s ward when Adedoyin called her name.
‘I learned that you will be taking care of the new patient who has lost his memory.’
Talk of a busy grapevine! Omolola rolled her eyes in exasperation and planted her hands on her hips as she faced her junior colleague.
‘So?’
‘Calm down nau. Have you seen him?’ Her voice dropped to a whisper but her eyes were dancing with excitement.
‘What about him? Why do I need to see him if I have no business with him?’
‘You don’t know what you are missing. He is 6 feet of yummy chocolate sweetness with slanted dreamy eyes. Oh my gosh!’ She fluttered her fingers in front of her face and made a fainting motion. Omolola tried to stifle her laughter but failed miserably.
‘Adedoyin, get out of my sight. I have a patient to attend to. By the way, please pick up my files for the afternoon ward round. I also want you to check on that teenage boy, Ademola and update me on his progress.’ She turned away and opened the door.
Adedoyin didn’t hide her sigh as she stared at Omolola’s curvy backside. She doesn’t even know what she has. I wished I am the one with that bad-ass figure, I will slay till I die. Her thought was filled with envy as she walked away.
*****
‘My name is Ademola.’ Her new patient announced as she stepped in, making her pause mid-stride. She glanced at the second bed which was empty and back at him. He was obviously talking to her!
His head was wrapped in abandage, his left arm was hanging in a cast and likewise his left leg with healing scrapes and bruises on his body. Despite all the scars, he was an absolute pleasure to look at. He was nude except for the knee-length shorts he wore and his long body was draped over the hospital bed carelessly.
She disliked good-looking men. Good-looking was too tame a name to describe this man, though. No wonder all the nurses were going crazy over him. Her defense went up automatically and she frowned as she placed her medical tray on his bedside table.
‘How do you know your name is Ademola?’ Her voice had dropped several inches cooler.
‘I heard you mention the name to your colleague and it clicked in my memory. I can’t remember my surname though.’ He frowned in concentration.
‘Were you eavesdropping on our conversation, Mr. Ademola?’ She gave him a reproaching up and down appraisal.
‘No, I wasn’t. I was coming from the restroom when I heard your conversation with your colleague.’ He gestured to the crutches leaning against the wall and grinned at her. He had obviously heard more than his name. Her gaze turned frosty. ‘Why are you angry?’ His voice turned curious.
‘I am not angry.’ She took deep, even breath to level out her temper. She couldn’t remember the last time she was angry. It took a lot to get her angry these days.
‘I could have been fooled.’ His lips twitched in amusement which vanished in the next moment. ‘I have amnesia. Where was I coming from for God’s sake?’ He added after a moment as he stared unseeingly at the door.
His words jolted her and reminded her she had a job to do. He is nothing but your patient. Don’t let him get a rise out of you. He is just a JOB!
‘How do you know a loss of memory is called Amnesia?’ Her voice was comforting as she picked up his wrist and felt for his pulse.
‘I just know.’ He shrugged and looked up at her. ‘It is funny that this environment feels so familiar to me as if I have been here before.’
‘You probably work in a hospital or pharmacy or any similar health facility. Does that jolt your memory?’ Her voice was soothing as she checked the bandage on his head wound. She cleaned it up and replaced it.
‘Do you have a headache? A Migraine?’ He shook his head in the negative. ‘Good. You are healing up nicely. The cast in your arm should be removed before this week run out. The one in your leg will take a while. Please turn over for your injection.’
‘There is no known cure or treatment for Transient global Amnesia, right?’ His voice was quiet as she helped him to turn unto his stomach. She gave him a steady look.
‘You seem to know a lot of medical jargons, Mr. Ademola. I am sure no Doctor has mentioned that to your hearing.’ He winced slightly as the needle came in contact with the skin on his bum and rubbed it gently when she was done.
‘You are right, Nurse Lola. What do you think?’ His voice was vibrating with suppressed excitement, even as the injection started taking immediate effect. He was struggling to stay awake.
‘Go to sleep, Mr. Ademola. I will bring you some medical journals and macho novels to jostle your brain.’ The last thing he saw as he drifted off to sleep was the smile which transformed her face.
The transformation took his breath away!
*****
‘Good evening Nurse Lola.’ Nurse Aziza greeted as she was preparing to leave for the day.
‘Good evening, Nurse Aziza. How was your day?’ Omolola smiled as she signed in for the night.
‘It was crazy, my dear. You will think everyone is falling sick in this town. The doctors are over-worked. Doctor Jeff nearly snapped my head off today.’ Aziza complained good-naturedly.
‘You should have sent Nurse Chinwe to him. You know she can seduce the devil with her yellow pawpaw skin.’ Aziza burst into hearty laughter. Omolola didn’t crack a smile. ‘By the way, the new Doctor hasn’t resumed yet?’
‘No. I learned Doctor Ahmad is out of the country and couldn’t be reached. By the way, your patient, Ademola has made tremendous progress. He has been walking around with crutches.’ She beamed at her.
‘He is not my patient. He has been on admission for more than 7 weeks. He ought to be discharged any moment from now.’ She removed a powder puff from her purse and dust it over her face.
‘I heard the Doctors discussing that he had been of great assistance to them. You know he has made friends with lots of them and taken the habit of sitting in with them when they are attending to Outpatients. We have you to thank for that discovery. The only problem is that he has nowhere to go.’
‘You can offer him a room in your palatial home in the GRA nau.’ Omolola’s eyes danced with amusement.
‘God forbids. Mba nu….make he com impregnate my sisters and sisters in law, bah? You are the one who is single. Please extend your hospitality.’
‘Thank you, madam Aziza. I am not searching. My regards to your family.’ She turned on her heels and walked into the ward.
‘What kind of mysterious woman are you? What are you hiding, Omolola Adewunmi?’ Despite the fact that they have been colleagues for more than five years, she realized she knew nothing about her personal life. ‘One day will be one-day sha…’ She picked up her purse and left the hospital premises.
*****
‘Good evening Nurse Lola.’ Ademola was sitting up in bed with a big textbook and biro.
‘Good evening Mr. Ademola. I can see you have been busy. How is your health?’ Her voice was brisk and friendly as she checked his wounds. It remained just the leg cast and lots of scarring bruises on his body.
‘I am fine. Thank you for all the books you sent through Nurse Adedoyin. I am most grateful. I have not gotten all my faculties back but I know I belong to the medical world.’
‘You have not been to the other world. You have not left the hospital premises since you were admitted more than 7 weeks ago. I spoke to Doctor Umoru. You will be discharged before the week runs out.’ She picked up her tray.
‘Where will I go? What will I be doing? It is as if a thin veil was covering the memory of my past lives. I feel so frustrated and helpless.’ He banged a knotted fist on the bed.
‘Please give it time. The cause of the temporary memory loss may be due to acute emotional distress as you are not suffering from a migraine or injury to any part of the brain. It will come back with time.’ Her voice was full of empathy.
‘I have been having nightmares though.’ His voice was barely above a whisper.
‘What kind of nightmare?’
‘There is a woman who kept shouting and screaming at me but I don’t understand what she was saying neither I can decipher it. I don’t know who she was either.’ He flipped through the textbook absently.
‘She is probably your wife. I am sure she will be worried by now.’ A sudden sense of disappointment swept over her. Get a grip, Omolola! What do you care about his marital status?
‘I know I have never been married to anyone. I am quite sure of that.’ Or am I? The thought filled him with a sense of dread. Do I have a family somewhere waiting for me to come home? What is this for God’s sake? He wiped a slightly trembling hand down his face and looked at her.
‘I need help with my accommodation. Who can I talk to?’ He asked after a moment.
‘You also need money. What can you do without money?’
‘You are absolutely right. Omolola, please help me. What am I going to do?’ He took her free hand in his but she slid it free and stepped away. He frowned.
She told him about the position of the physician who refused to show up.
‘Speak to Matron Bello. I am sure she will refer you to the medical director. I will see what I can do with your accommodation issue. In the meantime, try to rest and have a good night sleep. It is past midnight already.’ She opened the door.
‘Thank you, Omolola. I can never repay your kindness to me but I will try my best.’ He felt humbled.
‘Don’t thank me too much. Just see me as your surrogate younger sister or mother as the case may be until the real ones turned up.’ He was laughing when she closed the door.
She was not sure if her joking warning was for his benefit or her own. She sighed inaudibly as she went about her business for the rest of the night.

Dear My People!

Mobolaji is back again with a new story.

Though the below is something i just started, I don't know yet if it will be a full blown story or short fiction. Please drop your feedback, I will appreciate it.

******
‘Princess, when are you going home?’ Tayo walked into her office two weeks later.
She could feel his anger across the room and she struggled to smother a grin. He was the sole happy spot in her ruined universe right now.
‘Don’t you look yummy?’ She smiled at him.
It was Friday. He was smartly dressed in jeans and fitting blue and white t-shirt which stretched over his hard chest. The thin gold chain visible at the collar of the t-shirt added to the whole package.
‘Cut the crap, Nancy. This is nine pm in the evening. The building is already empty. Apart from the fact that you are exposing yourself to unnecessary risk, it is not healthy. You can’t undo the rot which ate through the company for several years in a few months. Stop over-working yourself.’ He snapped at her.
She felt her own anger rising but tamped it down. She exhaled sharply.
‘You are right. I will go home now.’ She conceded quietly as she started shutting down her system.
‘Do you promise me this won’t happen again?’ He doubted it but he knew her word is a bond.
‘Tayo, I can’t promise you it won’t happen again. I will try not to let it happen though. I can kill Salome with my bare hands if she was not already dead.’ She stated through gritted teeth.
Nancy and Salome are identical twin. Their resemblance ended at the physical as they were direct opposite in every other thing. Tayo sighed sadly. He knew the twins like the back of his hand.
‘It is okay. Calm down. Can we go and eat some catfish pepper soup right now?’ He gave her a boyish grin. She cocked her head to the side suspiciously.
‘What happened to your date? You dumb her? Have you turned into a serial playboy?’ Her voice went maternal. He winced and squirmed under the steady gaze.
‘Come on, Nancy. They all wanted to settle down. I can’t deal please. I have washed my hands off the institution of marriage. I am not going down that path again. I don’t know why women can be so complicated.’ He turned away and missed the look of longing in her eyes.
‘You can’t do that. Women are not the same. The fact that you have been there once doesn’t mean it is going to go wrong again. Give another woman a chance please.’ She pleaded quietly.
If that woman will be you, he thought as he turned to face her.
‘Can we leave now? This place is giving me the creeps. It seems as if Salome’s ghost is holding a gun to my head.’ He looked behind him dramatically.
She laughed as she locked up and followed him out of her office.
*****
‘You never tell me what causes the hostility between you and Sally. You used to be good friends.’ She said quietly as he manoeuvred his way through the traffic.
‘You know your sister was full of eccentrics. We just had a follow out. How was your day?’ He evaded her question.
She watched his profile, debating whether to let go of the topic or not before she shrugged.
‘It was bad. The highlight of the day was when Richard visited me in the office.’ Her voice was barely audible as she stared down at her engagement finger. Richard was her fiancé until he decided to start sleeping with her twin sister. His engagement ring was still on her finger.
‘What does he want? I hope you are still not in love with him?’ He gave her a sharp look.
She shrugged and looked out through the window.
‘He came to check on me. He wanted to know how I am faring after losing my loved ones and having my only source of livelihood threatened’ she laughed bitterly.
‘He has got some nerves. Do you want to go back to him?’ He held his breath as he asked casually.
‘Am I insane or something? I walked him out of the premises. Though he didn’t leave without leaving some threat behind and I promised to sue his ass if anything happens to me.’ She fumed angrily.
‘Atta girl!’ He laughed with relieve as he cuffed her ear playfully. She laughed as she twisted the ring off her finger and dropped it in her handbag.
‘How was your meeting with the new client? I keep forgetting to ask you about the outcome.’ She turned to look at him.
‘It went well. We signed a two years contract.’ He grinned at her.
‘Whoopee! That calls for celebration. You owe me a bottle of champagne.’ She waved her fists in the air in excitement.
‘We will pop one. Don’t worry!’ He laughed heartily.
