Training a dog is very important especially for pet dogs that live right inside your home. Dogs, in-as-much as they are animals have some intelligence to understand your gestures not necessarily your words. The understanding of words comes later when they are able to associate it with your gestures.

Why do you need to train your dog?

Dogs especially puppies love to play with anything and eventually destroy them, jump on you and stain or scratch your cloths, eat bones or any food on your bed by practically carrying it there, pee or poop on your bed etc. With these bad behaviors and more you can agree that there is a need to train that pet to minimize the damages.

When do you start to train?

Most times it’s better to train a dog from puppy stage so that he grows with the instructions in this head. Adult dogs can also be “broken” to imbibe good behavior; I have been successful with that as well. It’s necessary that you understand that the dog has bad behavior that needs to be eliminated than being frustrated by it. Frustration can lead to beating the animal or maltreating the dog or puppy inflicting greater damages that may not be easily reversed in future.

Why train by talking to the dog?

It is a common practice for parents to talk to their child when he does things wrong. The same can be done to animals and dogs in this case.

The necessary things to do first

Make sure your puppy or dog is not chained or caged for better result within the home. The dog should be free to roam the entire house. This makes it possible for the dog to follow you around where ever you go within the house. It is better for the dog to live with one person during this training so that he will have undivided attention when being instructed. Many persons in the family instructing one dog will lead to confusion and eventually the dog decides to do his own bidding and reject other instruction. It is better to keep one dog at a time while this training goes on.

Use the needs of the puppy or dog to instruct

You need to identify what this puppy or dog needs or loves. He might like to play with you, play with a toy, eat a certain food, lie down in a certain place, climb a certain object, hide in a certain place etc. these are the weapons you need to be able to instruct your dog to do what you want.
Many trainers believe in training with food or treat but from my own experience it is not 100% correct to use food as a tool to instruct your dog because their needs change depending on their mood and other psychological interplay.

Don’t use long sentences

When you want to instruct your dog do not speak long sentences like: “Sit down here”, “go back to your cage”, “lie down here” etc. these are counterproductive because they are too long and you may not be consistent with it. Use short words to associate with your gestures. Words like: “stop”, “sit”, “down”, “up” etc.

How to make them understand and do as you say

I had a little Havanese breed a toy hairy dog that refuses to climb the stairs but he wanted to follow me so I identified the need that is the fact that he wanted to follow me so I will climb the stair and say “up”, “up”. I would say it several times trying to make sure he doesn’t give up the need to follow me. At the sound of the word “up” he jerks like he wants to move up with me, as I repeat it he starts to climb. I use it when I want him to climb my bed or table.
A little pug of mine likes to jump on me when i return from work. She does that very often so I identified the need. She wants to greet me so I will say “stop”, she won’t listen at first and still jumps, I will then show my palm at her and say “stop”, at this point she starts to wonder: “why the palm”, while wondering she sits then I reach out and carry her and play with her for 30 seconds and drop her again and she wants to jump again, I repeat the “stop” word again and when she stops, I play with her again. Gradually the need begins to wane. This was repeated for some time until she was able to understand the word to mean stop so when she is barking and I say stop she stops.

Summary

When you understand the need of your dog you can manipulate the dog while associating a word to it. This will help your dog understand you when you speak. In my case when I look at my dog she knows exactly what I mean. Do not beat your dog to teach because the dog will always run away from you and you will not be able to talk to the dog and get the desired result.

there are many things people don't understand about pitts hence the over hype. they were bred to fight and they are fighters I agree but it does not mean they are the strongest digs in the world the thing that put them apart is that they don't give up they rather die than run away from a fight. I have seen a Bull mastiff mauled a pit bull people had to intervene to save the Pitt cos it would have ended up dead.

People looking for a dog to buy for security always have several questions to ask about the breed they are considering buying. I have been under intense questioning regarding the behaviour of many breeds of dogs like the German shepherd dog, Rottweilers and Caucasians mostly, rarely about other breeds.

Aggression in dogs can be classified into many behavioural areas which includes barking and showing aggression, biting and inflicting wounds on victims, being able to refuse a stranger vehemently, chasing intruders away etc.

I have been asked to describe a Caucasian compared to Rottweilers in terms of aggression and being able to perform security task. The truth is that before you compare both you need to know if the dogs will be guided or left on their own to perform.

I once wrote ( https://www.nairaland.com/4321997/proper-way-keep-care-caucasian ) about a Caucasian dog that chased his owner into the house (he was lucky to have escaped being bitten by the dog). The dog perceived him as a stranger because the man never came near him since he was acquired. I have gotten some serious rejection from some Caucasian dogs during the cause of my job as a vet also. Some get to like me later and some never did.

A funny incident happened with a Senator’s dog –a Rottweiler – who is so massive and aggressive that when he is opened at night you are advised to resist going outdoors. The dog only obeys the cook who feeds him. One night the security guy at the gate came out to urinate and the toilet was a separate building from his room. He was lucky that the dog was not near his door towards the toilet. He quickly ran into the toilet because he was very pressed only for the dog to notice some movement and came towards the gate. The dog probably heard the door to the toilet close and started to sniff the door and subsequently sat facing the door waiting for the guy to come out. To cut the long story short the guy ended up sleeping in the toilet till dawn.
I have received several calls from clients concerning dog bite involving a relation who came visiting them and got bitten by their dog somehow and also heard stories surrounding those incidents and other varied cases so that will form my basis for comparing the two breeds of dogs.

I must first emphasize that dogs of either breeds that is scarcely socialized will certainly be unpredictable in terms of aggression either to strangers or owners and handlers.

Caucasians dogs from my experience will be classified as “promise and deliver with some restrain”. If an aggressive Caucasian that is locked up barks at you nonstop for more than 5 minutes, when he is released will definitely chase and bite you. They might listen to their owners or handlers to stop after the first bite but certainly deaf before that. If the case is a Rottweiler that barked more than 5 minutes and released, he will chase and bite and may not stop without a physical intervention by the handler. He might be totally deaf to his name.

Caucasians like other dogs love to use their weight as advantage. If you have a Caucasian and a Rottweiler both males that grew together from puppy the tendency is that the bigger among them will try to dominate the other to become the pack leader. In this case I will describe the Rottweiler as the determined male and the Caucasian as a trouble maker. Caucasians will certainly bark more than the Rottweiler and might attack the Rottweiler if he attempts to bark first. Sorry, if this happens to your dogs the fight may not end quickly because Rottweilers are very determined dogs while the Caucasians are more of the extroverts that wants all the attentions to himself.

Rottweilers may prefer to lay ambush to an intruder while the Caucasian will readily announce his presence even before a stranger or an intruder gets close by continuously barking as a sign of warning.

In terms of aggression to family members who may not be well socialize to them but who they see around the house often. Rottweilers will tolerate the person touching him or getting close to him but when he decides he doesn’t want more please leave him alone or you might get a bite. In the case of Caucasians when they are puppies they will allow you touch them and play but when grown they might allow you around them but when you attempt to touch them, they might issue you some warning by growling at you and if you move further you do that at your risk.

Of course the both dogs share similarities like love for family or the household and defense against intruders in general. The paws are large and heavy, with hair between the toes, providing excellent insulation and protection. The nose is black and prominent with well opened, large nostrils. The thick, dense, weather-resistant coat has profuse feathering and is especially effective at keeping out the cold.

At 11:30pm, one night, in July 2017, a client of mine called me with a very distressed voice asking me to come straight to his house the following morning to remove his Caucasian dog. He insisted I should come before he goes to work. He went further to explain how the dog chased him into the house and nearly bit him.

According to him, He came home by 10pm but didn’t know that the dog was released into the compound. He saw the dog and attempted to pet the dog only for the dog to growl at him and started chasing him, he started to run until he used the kitchen door into his house because the kitchen door was always open. He thanked God he did not fall on the floor.

I humbly asked him how often he goes to see his dogs and he told me that he doesn’t go there at all that his security men are responsible for them. I had to explain to him that removing the dog will not solve the problem and that the dog did exactly what he was supposed to do if it was a stranger that jumped into his compound. I made him understand that he should try and get himself acquainted to the dog by at least giving the dog food by himself with the help of the handlers. His security guys were later telling me the story of how “their Oga” was always coming to feed the dog himself and to get acquainted to the dog.

In my own experience, 80% of owners of Caucasian breed of dog in Nigeria get it wrong on the care of this breed. This breed has succeeded to gain greater acceptance in Nigeria in recent times. 8 out of 10 requests I get from people intending to buy a dog or dogs ask for Caucasian breed but after the purchase of this dog, the care and keeping of this dog becomes very dis-satisfactory to me.

I once came across one client that really took very good care of her Caucasian dog and was inspired to waive all her bills because there are only few Nigerians that will do what she did to caring for that dog.

First of all, Caucasian Ovtcharka breed as it is originally called from its country of origin –Russia, refers to a dog used by sheep herding community to herd their sheep and for fending off predators and thieves. The word Ovtcharka in Russia means Sheepdog or shepherd. This dog has a strong dislike against strangers and very good with family members.

Caring for the Caucasian dog in Nigeria
It is worthy to note that Caucasian breed originated in temperate region against the tropical region which we live in here in Nigeria. Temperate regions are usually cold with low temperature and sometimes very low temperatures while Nigeria generally has high temperature in most areas of the country.

This disparity in climatic temperature calls for a much greater care to give relief to the dog from the stressful weather its already experiencing being bred in Nigeria. Many of the dogs born in Nigeria tend to blend very well with the weather conditions against the ones imported into the country. Despite the fact that they were born here does not mean that the dog should not be given the basic care required.

The Caucasian breed is a very hairy breed of dog; they shed a lot making them lose hairs very often and are constantly producing under growing hairs while eliminating the old coat.

The major problem I have with most Nigerians keeping this dog is the fact that they refuse to groom this dog properly or refuse to groom the dog at all causing their hairs to matt and sometimes result in sores and infections under these matted hairs resulting in greater distress on the dog.

Grooming or combing or brushing off the old hair coat of the Caucasian breed is a MUST and should not be taken for granted. You must find a way to ensure your dog gets constant grooming either by you or by the handler, this will relief the dog of stressful weather already existing in Nigeria.

Caucasian dogs are very heavy eaters. This dog eats a lot and must be fed heavily because they have a very huge body mass that must be nourished. They must be given nutritious food to help them develop properly especially during the puppy stage.

There is a need to always include sufficient protein in their meals to help them replace their fur which constantly changes. During moulting, their protein consumption must be increased because they will need it produce fresh fur. Supplements can be added to their food to improve their absorption of proteins and minerals for increased nourishment.

The Caucasian breed requires a lot of exercise and needs to be given the opportunity to exercise properly. You can even take the dog for walks which they enjoy very well and best if started early in their life.

Behaviourally, Caucasians will reject and attack a stranger even if the stranger is the owner of this dog as the story above illustrates.

Caucasians are very good with children and family members especially if they were properly socialized but can be very aggressive against strangers. Unlike German shepherds and Golden Retrievers, Caucasian dogs even when trained can sometimes decide to be stubborn and disobey their handler so the handler must be firm on the dogs training and commands.
