Nairaland / General / 7 Facts Fathers Never Tell Their Sons About Women by Captain2012(m): 5:54pm On Apr 22, 2013
1. You Can Not Chase Money And Women At The Same Time - Even when so many fathers have made this mistake in their youthful days they still end up failing to tell their sons that one can not hunt for money and women at the same time. It is either one makes money and then start chasing women or the other way round.

2. A Man Gets More Respect Based On His Pocket - This point is not trying to encourage crime or ungodly acts in other to make wealth but to face reality. It is a known fact that both within the home front and the society at large, a man is respected the more according to how comfortable and financially free he becomes.

3. Women Can Make Or Ruin You - So many fathers even when they know the truth of the power of any woman, still shy away from enlightening their sons on the critical hidden powers a woman possesses. From the days of Adam, Samson, Solomon, Abacha and other notable men, we have seen how a man can either rise or fall through the power and influence of a woman. A man should therefore thread as softly as possible when dealing with a woman.

4. A Woman Can Smell A Successful Man From Miles Away - Women naturally have an hidden instinct of knowing a man who is successful or have the tendency of being successful in the future. So many women have stuck to a struggling and upcoming man against their parents wish of marrying an already made man. A woman will say things like “he has a bright future”, “he has potentials” or “he will be a great man in future”. Ladies who have uttered such words and stuck by their men have never gone wrong. Example is how Michelle Obama stuck with Barack through thick and thin.

5. A Woman Doesn’t Like A Weak Man - When fathers tell their sons never to give in to a woman’s pressure, they mostly advise their sons to be forceful on issues to prove he is the man of the house. When in reality, women prefer men who say less and do more, rather than the ones who keep talking but do less. The latter is the typical meaning of a weak man but fathers always advice to do such to prove he is the king of the house.

6. Women Appreciate Men With Fatherly Characters - Most men always miss out on this and as such never advise their sons to be a father figure to their wives. Women are best at doing this but every woman wants a man who sits her down to advice her, reason with her, give her constructive criticisms and above all, believe in her.

7. It Is Easier To Catch A Cheating Man Than Catch A Cheating Woman - Most men till date don’t know that it is far easier to get caught cheating as a man than catching a woman who cheats. A woman can make a man ‘father’ every single child she has but only her knows who the biological father is, while a man can hardly keep it as a secret from his wife when he has a love child outside the matrimonial home.

Sports / Napoli Striker Pandev: I Voted For Mourinho - And It Was Changed by Captain2012(m): 9:12am On Mar 22, 2013
Napoli striker Goran Pandev has backed Jose Mourinho's claims that votes for him in the Ballon d'Or were changed.

The Real Madrid coach accused FIFA of fraud in an interview over the weekend.

Pandev revealed to La Sexta: “I voted for Mourinho as best Coach of the year and I am convinced that strange things happened when the votes were counted.

“According to the FIFA list I voted for Vicente Del Bosque, but I voted for Mourinho. I even called him and said I’d vote for him. Unfortunately, odd things happen at FIFA.”

Nairaland / General / “I Only Stole N23 Billion…” by Captain2012(m): 5:26pm On Feb 05, 2013
LAST week, Nigerians were outraged. Mr. John YakubuYusufu, one of the eight civil servants accused of stealing N40 billion, note; not N40 million, from the Nigeria Police Pension Fund, got a limp tap on the wrist.

He had pleaded guilty to stealing N23 billion, again note; not N23 million! The judge sentenced him to two years imprisonment. Anyway, he was not to serve the two years imprisonment.

He was given the option of walking away by paying just N750,000! Yes, you heard me right, N750,000 only, not N750 million! That was the reason for the national outrage!

But in the din of the uproar, we missed the profound message Mr. YakubuYusufu was sending to us! He told us, “I only stole N23 billion. Government has already seized my 32 property!” Got that? He stole only N23 billion when he could have stolen more!

It was out of patriotism that he decided to limit himself to N23 billion; chicken change, you must agree. After all, the money was there to be stolen and he stole only N23 billion.

And “my 32 property” seized (wrongfully?) by government were proceeds of the “only N23 billion” he stole. So, why should he be crucified? Why the hullabaloo?

Perhaps if you made more noise, Mr. Yusufu could refer you to the series of scandals that went on in the National Assembly and challenge you to show him one person that has been convicted. He could even remind you of the rot in the NNPC.

He could point to the trillions of Naira budgeted annually that get us nothing in return. He could even recall the Permanent Secretary who, in the early months of Obasanjo’s administration, stole “only” N400 million and got away with just nolleprosecui!

So a man steals “only N23 billion”, of money that was readily available and waiting to be stolen, and the nation is outraged? I believe the Judge appreciated the generosity of Mr. Yusuf and reciprocated his goodwill with a handshake instead of handcuff.

Tell me; have you ever wondered why it is possible in Nigeria for someone to steal N50,000 public fund and he or she is not found out? He or she steals one million Naira, and nobody finds out? He or she steals two million, N10 million, N20 million, N200 million and yet the system does not find out?

He or she steals One billion, yet the system remains blind to that? One, two, three, four…up to 23 billion and the man gets bored and stops! Then Rip Van Winkle wakes up!

There is something fundamentally wrong with our country that the Yusufus of this world are pointing out to us! Nigeria, as presently structured, can only sustain corruption!

Between the town and Abuja money

Remember what late Dr. Ukpabi Asike, former Administrator of defunct East Central State, described as “Ogbomosho syndrome”? He did not mean any offence to Ogbomosho people. He simply used their great virtue to explain the very thing wrong with the structure of our federation.

He illustrated that an Ogbomosho man will never embezzle the money entrusted to him by his town’s union. This is because he easily relates with the owners of the money; he is one of them; he relates to the objective for which the money was collected; he would not disgrace himself or betray his trust among his people!

But the same man may not entertain the same sensitivity for money stashed in Abuja and owned by an anonymous entity. If he steals it, people may rally behind him as “our son”, not a thief. The church will collect his tithe and look the other way.

In other words, stealing (okay, we euphemistically call it corruption) like defecating on the water front on Marina Street, Lagos, hides under the anonymity of our faulty federation. A goat owned by everybody is easily starved, say my people.

Those who are opposed to the restructuring of this country for effectiveness forget that order is the first law in heaven. And God said, let there be light. That was order being ordained! And there was light. And He looked at the result of that order, and IT WAS GOOD!

The universal truth is that order is good! Another truth is that disorder is anti-good! In the order of things in the universe, where there is truth, falsehood has no place. We have been labouring on the Nigerian project, shed blood, tried leader after leader, yet nothing is working—from ordinary roads to pension funds! Why is it so?

The truth is that the foundation is wrong and nothing good can stand on it. We must get that and stop chasing shadows.

Disorder and a country at war

It is only a disorderly federation like ours that can allow any man so disposed to steal as much as he can without being caught and when caught, walks away with a slap on the wrist. A disorderly country is like a country at war; it is susceptible to looting.

Can anybody tell me when and where in the First Republic we saw the level of rot we are seeing in every facet of our national life today? Why is it impossible to steal one million dollars in the United States of America and get away with it? Why is it impossible to steal one million pounds in the United Kingdom and get away with it?

Why is it impossible to steal one million Rand in South Africa and get away with it? Now nearer home; why is it impossible to steal one million cedes, in Ghana of today, and get away with it? These countries are structured for effective law and order! Simple! It is this order that has made it possible for the citizens to have no alternative to being patriotic.

Yusufu and others like him who freely help themselves to public funds are mere symptoms of the ills we have refused to correct in order to get our country functioning effectively.

The good sign, though, is that many more eminent Nigerians have seen this truth. I listened to General Ibrahim Babangida last

Thursday at the launching of two books written in honour of Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi admit that we have made mistakes all these past years. And so “right policies have been wrongly implemented and temporary solutions have often been turned into permanent policies, even though the problems they were designed to address have long been solved”.

It is common sense that a wrong structure can only yield wrong policies. And once the policies are wrong, they cannot be implemented. IBB admitted that “the starting point has to be an admission that we have to fix things”!

Unfortunately, there are people who think that the solution is to panel beat the constitution in a way that serves their personal interests.

The truth is, a Nigerian that works for only a few as it is now, will ultimately not work for anybody! And people like John YakubuYusufu will continue to find it easy to steal “only N23 billion” and get away with it.

Sports / Why FIFA Has Degraded The Ballon D'or Into A Vapid Popularity Contest by Captain2012(m): 5:22pm On Jan 30, 2013
If he hasn't already, Lionel Messi should get onto his builders about expanding his overflowing trophy room. For no matter what he does on the pitch, Messi can be assured he'll continue winning FIFA's beauty contest, er, sorry, Ballon d'Or.

France Football had something special. The Ballon d'Or was decided by a panel of journalists who agonised over their selections, knowing that the choice would reflect upon themselves, the magazine and the credibility of the award.

FIFA had their gong - the manufactured World Player of the Year - which ran in direct competition to the Ballon d'Or. Fans weren't fooled. It was an award created out of envy. It had nothing of the prestige of the Ballon d'Or and was never going to catch on.

Then France Football sold out.

Now we have a beauty contest , decided by national team captains, coaches and 'journalists', though some are really pundits. The crazy thing is that the award's creator, Gabriel Hanot, was fully supportive of surrendering all the credibility built up over 44 years of the trophy's existence to FIFA.

FIFA condemns their Ballon d'Or by their own words.

Reacting to a report by Al Jazeera, quoting Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky and PSG defender Thiago Silva that their votes had falsely been recorded for Messi, a FIFA spokesman declared to Eurosport: "It's a false rumor. When we were told what happened, we did the necessary checks and can confirm what was posted on the night of the ceremony.

"Everything was perfect, the documents are correct. Everyone is free to interpret as you wish, but some do not remember who they voted for."

So, the people involved in voting on the most 'prestigious' individual trophy the game has to offer, which we devote hours upon hours discussing and debating, are so detached from the process they can't even remember who they went for barely weeks after their vote was cast?

You can bet every member who sat on the France Football selection panel can remember who they voted for - and more importantly why.

Past victories marked significant points in the history of the game. Michael Owen's win in 2001 reflected Liverpool's Treble under Gerard Houllier. George Best beat Franz Beckenbauer in 1968 after winning the European Cup with Manchester United. The Dane, Allan Simonsen, won in 1977, beating Michel Platini and Kevin Keegan, after inspiring Borussia Monchengladbach to the title and the European Cup final.

How does Messi's award reflect what happened on the pitch in 2012?

The answer is it doesn't.

Yes, his goalscoring record was important, but what of Chelsea's amazing, against-all-odds Champions League triumph? He may still not have made the final three, but you'd like to think, under the old format, there would've been judges arguing the case for Didier Drogba to be recognised. The sheer will and determination of the Ivorian outshone Messi in last season's competition. It wasn't Drogba who bottled the spotkick in the semifinal, nor coughed up possession in the first-leg for Chelsea's winner. But it was the Blues legend who headed home when all appeared lost in the final - on Bayern Munich's home turf - and then kept his nerve to convert the winning penalty.

Yes, in the final voting, he may've missed out, but there would surely have been someone on that panel arguing the case, just as Jose Mourinho did when paying tribute to his old team:

"I know some people think Barcelona are the masters of the game and will criticise Chelsea like they criticised Inter Milan two years ago. But they know nothing about character, about effort, about a team with 10 men resisting tactically, physically, everything."

Where do the qualities of "character, effort" and sheer will stand in today's Ballon d'Or? Would Fabio Cannavaro or two-time winner Kevin Keegan, both of whom display the attributes so valued by Mourinho, have been recognised by today's beauty contest?

Selling out to FIFA not only damaged the integrity of France Football's original award, but football's chronicle has lost something meaningful in the process

Nairaland / General / Lagos: Pilot Averts Crash, Lands With One Engine by Captain2012(m): 7:01am On Jan 28, 2013
A Medview Airlines’ pilot on Sunday landed a Boeing 737-400 plane with only one functional engine at the Lagos airport, a few minutes after the aircraft lost its other engine at 21,000 feet above sea level.

A technical fault led to the loss of one engine and forced the pilot of the Abuja-bound plane carrying 74 passengers to make an air return.

The plane, however, landed safely at the Runway 18L of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

Findings revealed that the incident happened about 15 minutes after the plane took off on Sunday afternoon.

Before the loss, it was gathered that there was a big bang in one of the two engines of the Boeing 737-400 plane.

The reason for the loss of the engine is still unclear as at press time on Sunday.

However, a team of investigators from the airline and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority have commenced investigations into the cause of the incident.

The spokesman of NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye, confirmed the development. Adurogboye, in text message to our correspondent, said, “Medview Airlines today had an air return of its Lagos to Abuja flight 214. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-400 series marked 5N-BPA with 74 passengers on board; flying 21,000 feet heard a loud bang on engine number two and immediate loss of thrust on same engine. As such, the pilot took a safety precautionary measure: shut down the engine, returned to base and landed safely with one engine.

“The passengers were, thereafter, transferred to another of its aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 series and flown to Abuja safely. Medview Airlines’ ground engineers and their Turkish maintenance firm, Technic engineers, are looking at the plane for proper rectification and recertification by the NCAA, thereafter.”

The General Manager, Medview, Mr. David Babatunde, also confirmed the development. He, however, explained, “The aircraft departed to Yola via Abuja. At about 15 minutes into the flight, there was an engine surge. The captain took safety precautionary measure and landed safely back at the Lagos airport. The passengers were immediately accommodated in another aircraft, which took off for Yola via Abuja.”

Similarly, the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Joe Obi, said in a statement, “A Medview aircraft 737-400 with registration number 5N BPA from Lagos-Abuja-Yola earlier today made an air return to Lagos about 15 minutes after take-off.

“The plane had taken off at 12noon. The pilot of the aircraft, who noticed a surge in one of the engines, immediately applied the necessary safety precautionary measure by returning the aircraft to base"

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Revealed! Wenger's Letter To David Villa by Captain2012(m): 7:25pm On Jan 17, 2013
With Arsenal having made a formal approach to sign David Villa, Arsene Wenger has really pushed the boat out in his attempts to convince the Barcelona striker that the Emirates Stadium is the place to be.

Yes, that's right, Goal.com can exclusively claim to have intercepted a secret letter that was sent from the Gunners boss directly to his top transfer target. Feast your eyes on this...

David,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing to offer you the chance to sign for Arsenal.

As my club has come under a lot of criticism recently for things such as not winning trophies, and continuing to employ Sebastien Squillaci, I thought I would write to you personally to defend Arsenal against these accusations. I write to explain to you why we are in fact the most principled and virtuous footballing entity in existence and why you would be a capitalist fool to not want to join us.

Firstly, the trophies thing. People criticise us for not bringing home silverware, but these idiots do not realise that football is an aesthetic pursuit as well as a competitive one. After all, how many Turner Prizes did Rembrandt win? None, David. How many Oscars has Scarlett Johansson won? Zero. Both have brought so much beauty to the world, and received no awards for their selfless efforts. Rembrandt, Johansson, Wenger.

So, when I see Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere playing endless one-twos in the opposition box, I am almost as happy as when I lifted that first sweet, sweet Premier League trophy in 1998. Almost. Anyway, what is the point of winning a trophy when you do it with Martin Keown in defence? He wouldn’t know the Beautiful Game if it crept up behind him, screaming, arms raised. Surely you feel the same about Carles Puyol? I'm sure you do. Now, instead of Keown, we have Laurent Koscielny, who keeps his hair much neater and whose disgust at shirt pulling, fouling, and indeed marking altogether, brings Keown to shame. Ugly Keown. Beautiful Laurent.

Football should be a beautiful sport, David. At Arsenal you will learn this first-hand. You see, you may think Barcelona have mastered the passing game, but I’m sorry to tell you, you have been cheating. You are actually not allowed to have Busquets in midfield – he is much too tall, and he also likes to tackle. In fact, he reminds me of Patrick Vieira, and I got rid of him for those very reasons. Now we have Aaron Ramsey, who is nice and short, with no tackling, and of course far better looking. No cheating at Arsenal

You see? Players like Keown and Vieira have been replaced by Koscielny and Ramsey. OH DEAR GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE!? And all in pursuit of beauty. I’m sure you will appreciate this prerogative - you shouldn't need me to tell you that you would fit in excellently here, with your meticulously-shaped hair and superbly-trimmed goatee.

Also, being the chivalrous folk that we are, Arsenal also have a socialist pay structure, which means that you are likely to earn a similar wage to all your peers. This is morality in action, David. No matter how well you play, Squillaci, Gervinho and Andre Santos will take home similar pay-cheques to you. And if that’s not the very definition of fair, then what is?

So, are you a beautiful, collectivist man like me, or are you an ugly, profit-seeking mercenary? I think we both know the answer.

My very best,

Arsene

Sports / Fifa/fifpro World XI: Andrea Pirlo And Others Who Should Have Been Included by Captain2012(m): 10:30pm On Jan 09, 2013
The latest FIFA/FIFPro World XI of 2012 does not do adequate justice to the ones who worked tirelessly the last season. A majority of players simply did not warrant inclusion.

Although the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta were deserving candidates, the FIFA/FIFPro World XI snubbed too many brilliant players.

Here’s my personal World XI.

Goalkeeper

It seems that it was his reputation that helped him clinch the award more than anything; Iker Casillas was nowhere near his best last season, and, bar a handful of outstanding performances, was nothing more than ordinary.

Keepers like Manuel Neuer and even Michel Vorm were exceptional last season, but given that the likes of Vorm and Tim Krul are always overlooked for such awards, it was no glaring surprise.

However, two candidates should have been favoured instead—either Joe Hart or Petr Cech.

The former was excellent all year round, and the latter’s heroics ensured that the Champions League went to London in 2012. My personal pick would have been Petr Cech. Domestically, he struggled in the first half of the 2011/12 season, and it could have been pinned down to Andre Villas-Boas’ impact upon the team.

But in 2012, Cech was simply exceptional. He was solid in goal, especially in the Champions League, and determined who would be crowned the Champions of Europe.

Right-Back

Dani Alves should have been nowhere near the list. Instead, Philipp Lahm should have been the candidate. Exceptional for both Bayern Munich and Germany, whom he led to the finals of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the Euro 2012, Lahm should’ve been included.

Central Defenders

Mats Hummels and Vincent Kompany both had a stellar campaign last season. Hummels and Kompany both won the league with their respective clubs and were stalwarts in defence.

Hummels also had a solid Euro 2012 campaign, and bar that one blip against Italy, was one of the best players in Poland/Ukraine.

Left-Back

I would have picked Ashley Cole on account of his performances both at the league level and inspiring Chelsea to go all the way in the Champions League last season.

Had it not been for Ashley Cole’s determined attitude, Chelsea would not have had the courage to rally up against Barcelona. He was the one man who remained resolute, and after Andres Iniesta’s second goal in the second leg, no Chelsea player seemed to have the desire to continue anymore except Cole.

However, such performances were not rare all season. Cole put in a consistent shift all season round and demonstrated why he was considered one of the best left-backs of all time.

Midfielders

Xabi Alonso and Andres Iniesta were both solid picks, although Arturo Vidal would also have been a notable candidate. Both Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger were also exceptional.

However, Xavi should not have been included. Not to take anything away from him, but other players were simply much better.

The most deserving candidate was Andrea Pirlo.

For Juventus, he orchestrated the entire play, putting in superb performances one after the other. And during the Euro 2012, he dragged an inferior Italy side all the way through to the finals. Splendid performances against England and Germany ensured that Italy would indeed proceed to the finals.

Forwards

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are obvious inclusions, and while Radamel Falcao was also worthy of the inclusion, my personal pick would have been Robin van Persie.

The Dutchman led a much-weakened Arsenal side to a third-place finish, and although his performances in the international level were a bit lacking, his domestic performances were nothing short of extraordinary. For a person who nearly beat Alan Shearer’s longstanding record of most goals in a year, a place in the World XI would be deserved.

Politics / Presidency Worries Over Govs’ Demand On Crash Probe by Captain2012(m): 8:47am On Dec 19, 2012
The Presidency is worried by Nigeria Governors’ Forum’s insistence on playing a role in the investigation into Saturday’s helicopter crash which claimed the lives of Kaduna State Governor Patrick Yakowa and former National Security Adviser Andrew Azazi in Bayelsa State, investigations have revealed.

The NGF, in a communique after its emergency meeting in Abuja on Monday, apart from demanding a role in the probe into the crash also resolved to hire the services of a consultant to be part of the investigation.

A presidential source, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity on Tuesday, said the Presidency was not comfortable with the demand.

The source said the Presidency felt that the demand was capable of eroding peoples’ confidence in the government.

He said, “The thinking within the Presidential Villa is that the governors are not helping the Federal Government.

“The Presidency is of the opinion that the governors are even inciting Nigerians against the Federal Government and asking them not to have faith in what we do as a country.

“I must tell you that the Presidency felt betrayed by the statement and I think the President would say so anytime he meets with the governors.

“The import of the statement, according to government thinking, is that if the governors can’t believe in what the Federal Government does, how can ordinary Nigerians do?”

Asked if the Federal Government would accede to the demand of the governors, the source said the Presidency was in a dilemma over the issue.

The source said, “If the Federal Government says no, it may be interpreted to mean that it has something to hide. If it says yes, it may also anger the military, whose helicopter crashed.”

The governors had called for thorough investigation and openness into the air crash.

The communiqué of the meeting was read by the Chairman of the NGF, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.

It said, “The forum further resolved to engage a consultant to participate in the investigation process or serve as an observer.”

The governors pledged their support for directive of the President for a thorough investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the helicopter crash.

The meeting was attended by the governors of Imo, Abia, Ogun, Anambra, Adamawa, Rivers, Kogi, Ondo, Kebbi, Yobe, Niger, Gombe, Sokoto, Edo, and Plateau states.

The governors of Enugu, Bauchi and Nasarawa States were represented by their deputies.

Efforts to get the reaction of presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, did not yield result as he did not answer the several calls put through to his mobile telephone.

Science/Technology / New Computing Devices Will Allow Touch, Smell – IBM by Captain2012(m): 6:36am On Dec 18, 2012
WASHINGTON (AFP) – Future computing devices will push further into the senses by developing capacities to mimic the ability to see, smell, touch, taste and hear, IBM says in an annual forecast Monday.

The seventh annual “IBM 5 in 5,” a list of innovations that have the potential to have an impact in the next five years, said computers and other devices will gain more capabilities to simulate the human senses.

IBM said computers may be able to use algorithms to determine the precise chemical structure of food and why people like certain tastes.

“Not only will it make healthy foods more palatable — it will also surprise us with unusual pairings of foods actually designed to maximize our experience of taste and flavor,” the computing giant said.

“In the case of people with special dietary needs such as individuals with diabetes, it would develop flavors and recipes to keep their blood sugar regulated, but satisfy their sweet tooth.”

IBM predicted that in the next five years, tiny sensors embedded in computers or cell phones will detect if someone is coming down with a cold or other illness, by analyzing odors, biomarkers and thousands of molecules in someone’s breath.

These tools will also help doctors diagnose and monitor the onset of ailments such as liver and kidney disorders, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy, according to the IBM report.

For touch, IBM says new tactile, infrared and pressure sensitive technologies will allow people to simulate touch, such as the texture and weave of a fabric, over a mobile device.

“Utilizing the vibration capabilities of the phone, every object will have a unique set of vibration patterns that represents the touch experience,” IBM said, pointing out the potential for retail and health care sectors.

IBM said computers are also developing improved capacities to detect and analyze sounds.

“Within five years, a distributed system of clever sensors will detect elements of sound such as sound pressure, vibrations and sound waves at different frequencies,” IBM said.

“It will interpret these inputs to predict when trees will fall in a forest or when a landslide is imminent.”

“Baby talk” will be understood as a language, according to IBM, helping parents or doctors understand what infants are trying to communicate.

The IBM outlook says another key area for computer innovation will be the ability to analyze visual data, or “see.”

“Computers today only understand pictures by the text we use to tag or title them; the majority of the information — the actual content of the image — is a mystery,” said IBM.

“In the next five years, systems will not only be able to look at and recognize the contents of images and visual data, they will turn the pixels into meaning, beginning to make sense out of it similar to the way a human views and interprets a photograph.”

These applications will be able to help analyze images such as X-rays or body scans, but also have an impact on industries from retail to agriculture.

“IBM scientists around the world are collaborating on advances that will help computers make sense of the world around them,” said Bernie Meyerson, IBM fellow and vice president of innovation.

“Just as the human brain relies on interacting with the world using multiple senses, by bringing combinations of these breakthroughs together, cognitive systems will bring even greater value and insights, helping us solve some of the most complicated challenges.”
