Car Talk / Re: My Car Is Still Bouncy After Changing To New Absorber...help!!! by cardoctor(m): 5:51pm
phal:
Hi Nairalanders,

I drive a 2010 Nissan Sunny (AKA Fashola), my suspension was not doing it job anymore as it has already been slightly over a year I installed the absorber.
The car was too bouncy and doesn't absorb shock any more so I bought a brand new absorber and get it installed but yet when I ride it still bounces though it was fair compared the old shock absorber but the new absorber doesn't feel right as it should being a new absorber.
When I hit even the smallest bump i do feel like it was a very big bump as the new absorber doesn't absorb the shock and the car seems like it swerving whenever this happens.

Another point is, I raised the car a bit by giving the shock absorber to welder to lift the base (I did same to the old previous absorber too & it worked perfectly well until it worn out) as the road I ply every day is a bad & bumpy road & the car hits the ground hence the raising.

What can I do to eliminate the rough ride even after I have installed new absorber....
All the car gurus in the house Please help !!!! This is very urgent!!!!

When you say "BRAND NEW" are they really " BRAND NEW"? Some people will say brand new when its actually refurbished and resprayed old tokunbo parts.

Have them dismantled and checked for hydraulic pressure.

Car Talk / Re: Should Gear Oil Be Changed Or Topup And When? by cardoctor(m): 5:22pm
IranianSea:
Good afternoon guys. My Corolla 2010, bought 3 years ago ( Toks from Apapa ) the car is serving me good and everything still running smoothly, good gear selection, low fuel consumption and all. In short, I'm enjoying it. Since I have been using it I never had any issues with it I only change engine oil and filter that is all. Last week I went to change my engine oil again then I asked my mechanic to check the gear oil because I have never see what's in there ever since I bought it. He checked and advice me to top up it because it's still neat or I should change it. But from the from the gauge's cap, its written there, it shouldn't be changed so here I'm very confused on what to do.
Please I need contribution on this from those you bought their car Tokunbo, how long before you ever tampered with the gear oil? I'd prefer contributions from those who is using Toyota corolla 2010 or any.

It's not an emergency because everything still running smoothly, I'm not worry but just that I wanna know when gear oil should be changed. My car is 3years and 6 months today.

Thanks guys

There is absolutely nothing wrong with changing the automatic transmission oil on your car's gearbox. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!

Auto transmissions also require fluid change after periodic use and mileage prompt service intervals. All vehicle manufacturers recommend a service interval specific to all makes and models and there's always a manual booklet to guide you on when to do so in the car's service booklet.

Most transmission service intervals are between 60,000 to 90,000miles and less frequent than the engine oil change.

Typical transmission oil change on Toyota cars of your cars age group is 60k miles.

The current mileage on the car odometer too should be considered if already higher than 60k miles. If less than 60k mile, consider changing it soon based on its age.

CAUTION!!!
This is not a job for the novice mechanic thats why mix ups easily occur. Its not the same as changing engine oils too. A lot of patience and understanding of the skill required will save you a lot if headaches. It must be handled by a very experienced auto technician.

CAUTION!!!
Make sure the recommended oil is used. In you own case the toyota recommend transmission oil (Toyota WS) and the transmission is fully cold prior to draining the oil.

CAUTION!!!
Continued operation of your vehicle without oil change would result in catastrophic failure of the transmission.

On the other hand, topping up must be with the recommended Toyota WS transmission oil. Tranny oil changes on the Corolla 2010 would require approx 6-7 liters and Just make sure its bought by you. Also supervise this job to make sure that due procedures are applied as advised here then check for leaks from sump cover, drain bolt, drive shaft oil seals etc.

Please ignore those who are advising that you shouldn't service your car tranny.

Car Talk / Re: DIY: Replacement Of Transmission Filter, 03-07 Accord 4cyl by cardoctor(m): 4:45pm
Piyke:
Finally had time to do this This Yule (actually doing a lot piled up DIYs). I remember running for months with an improperly covered transmission dipstick earlier when I got this ride, that added more reason for me to do this...

Materials:
1. 10" wrench
2. New transmissions filter (P/N: 25430-PLR-003, got the OEM)
3. NOSE pliers
4. Rag

And this is a fully detailed process with pictures in addition to illustrate. It shouldn't cost much though for any roadside mechanic to help you do that providing your engine oil and filter are handy. Nice one bro.

Car Talk / Re: HERE IS HOW FADED PLATE NUMBERS CAN MAKE YOU LOSE UP TO N20,000 by cardoctor(m): 12:27pm
onlinediva:
"The offense of using faded plate numbers on your car is called number plate violation( NPV), and the fine is 3,000 naira. However, if you alter the number plate by repainting it or taking it to a painter, it becomes a forged document(OFD), which carries a much higher fine of 20,000 naira.

When your plate number is faded, simply visit the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) and request a reprint or you seek for help from someone who know much more about it.

If your plate is from Lagos State, note that Lagos State has its own printing facility and no longer relies on the federal government for printing. In other words, Lagos State prints its own plates. Only Lagos state out of the 36 states."

ONLY IN LAGOS STATE O.

Car Talk / Re: 2012 Honda Accord P0011 Is Killing Me by cardoctor(m): 11:58am
Sirnioking:
I recently worked on my 4 cylinder engine that makes a 2 seconds rattling noise after starting each morning. After which the P0011 code came up and refused to go. I bought a tokunbo VTC solenoid sensor it did not work. A rewire suggested it was a faulty brainbox switch or something. He opened the box, replaced a tiny switch, after driving home the lights came back again. The check engine often comes along with VSC light off and a screeching tire sign. I am sincerely tired of this issue. Kindly suggests ways I can fix it, please. Thanks.

Replace the camshaft VTC sprocket and thank me late. You didn't mention the model but I believe its a 2008 model with the 4-cylinder in-line.

Then your AC compressor may be the culprit, its probably a manual compressor.
I am able to analyze this because I use a 2007 accord and same thing happens.

Replace your ac compressor back to the original one and your wahala will fly out of the window. Trust me.

This is not where you come to get help for this. Those lights indicate that you must visit the workshop where diagnostics and scan can be done. No level of interpretation could possibly help you here. Just dont end up with more problems. Go straight to an auto technician with a scanner that is not limited to just the power train alone.

HenriXI:
Thank you very much Guys for the inputs and assistance you've offered me through this time...

It was really a rough time for me cuz i did the paying (for the various attempts) while we all did the learning...

@AutoElectNG, please pardon me for not updating this post as often as i should have done. Please put yourself in my shoes. (I've replaced 2 front wheel speed sensors @30k, ABS Pump Assembly @65k, 2 transmission VSS @25k each, the transmission itself @100k + 2 4 litres of WS Gear oil @34k and the Instrument Cluster @30k). Bros, i needed time to recuperate...

Well, the issue was actually the Instrument cluster... After replacing the instrument cluster, everything worked fine - meaning my old transmission and everything else was working fine.

It's really hard troubleshooting these modern semi-complex electrical and computer controlled vehicles. If this is the case with a small 2010 Toyota Corolla, then what would be the case on more complex brands like Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi and the likes...

It's a learning curve and I'm sure someone out there will see this post early enough and not have to go through what i went through.

Let's i forget, please link me up to buyers for my transmission. Help me get some money back.

You can reach me on 08033149441.

Once again, Thank you for everything. I appreciate.

My current Instrument cluster is attached in the picture here... Sorry i took the picture at night and YES!!! on the express... Lol.

Good thing you got it fixed eventually. Most auto technicians would ignore this detail but its an elementary aspect of diagnosis for this particular issue.

Car Talk / Re: Auto Gurus Help With P0015 And P0012 Errors by cardoctor(m): 10:02am On Apr 20
ecosystm:
Last two weeks ago, my mechanic worked on my crankshaft..and since then I have been experiencing occasional misfires and loss of power and poor mileage on my car..Toyota corolla 2009, I called his attention to these issues but he insisted I should continue driving and after sometimes everything will normalised..

Checked engine light and maint light kept popping on my dashboard..

Error codes are: P0015 and p0012

Pls auto gurus in house pls i need assistance on what to do..

Thanks

There can only be two things wrong here.

1. Your mechanic did not set the timing correctly. He needs to check the timing position of the three timing marks correlation with the timing chain. If Off Mark, even if its by one tooth on the timing gear, its inevitable for the fault you are experiencing to be present hence the fault code diagnosed and the erratic engine performance especially on idle.

2. The Valve Timing Control component on the Inlet camshaft sprocket has been welded or held in a fixed position by our "local" mechanics thus inhibiting the valve control operations of advancing and retarding of the engine timing. They (some illiterate mechanics) usually set the timing this way simply because they dont know the correct procedure. If the VVTi sprocket has been welded or in a fixed position then you must have to replace the entire sprocket.

Follow the analysis above and also supervise the checking process by an independent mechanic with knowledge of valve timing setting procedures.

Just a little bit over the Normal mark. Not overheating at the moment but may do anytime after this. Seems like your radiator fan is a bit weak.
