Crime / Police In Delta Parade 13 Year Old Cultist by CasaFFa(f): 3:31pm On Jan 25, 2018
Source: Eagleee http://eagleee.com/detail?newsId=532306

A 13-year-old boy was yesterday paraded alongside suspected secret cult members by the Delta State Police Command in Asaba.

Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Mustafa, said the boy and 30 other suspects, including a young lady, were allegedly involved in various criminal activities in different parts of the state.

Precious Agofure, a Junior Secondary School Three (JS3) student of Uriapele Mixed Secondary School in Sapele, was arrested at his Sapele residence two weeks ago.

Soldiers from the military base in Koko in Warri North Local Government Area had stormed the house where the boy lived with his elder half brother, in search of suspected secret cult members, using the area as hideout.

The boy told newsmen that he spent 10 days in custody of the army in Koko together with two other young men, before they were handed over to the police.

He denied being a cultist but admitted that four boys in his school had actually attempted to introduce him to a certain cult group called, “Cage Bird” in December.

He disclosed that they stopped disturbing him after his mother, who lives in another town but pays his school fees, threatened to expose the boys by reporting to the police.

CP Ibrahim expressed his determination to work with all stakeholders to effectively tackle all forms of criminality in the state, including armed robbery, kidnapping, oil facility vandalism and herdsmen attacks.

Agriculture / Afdb Inspires Nigerian School Children With 'farming Is Cool' Competition by CasaFFa(f): 11:24am On Jan 25, 2018
Source: Eagleee http://eagleee.com/detail?newsId=532120

The Africa Development Bank has launched a Junior Art Contest in the country to promote the potential of agriculture to secondary school children. President of the Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, presented prizes to the three winners from the month-long contest at the commissioning of the Nigeria office building of the Bank in Abuja. The winners received partial scholarships of 1,000,000 Naira, 500,000 Naira and 250,000 Naira as first, second and third place prizes, respectively.

Speaking at the event, Senior Director of the Nigeria Country Department at the Bank, Ebrima Faal said: “The art competition was conducted to sow a seed of awareness in young minds of the significance and potential of agriculture in the development of a nation’s economy.

“The Farming is Cool campaign strives to flip the script on farming as a last resort by emphasizing and promoting it as a viable wealth-creation option. It targets youth and children to encourage positive thought and action towards an agricultural revolution,” he added.

AfDB is accelerating agricultural development through its ‘Feed Africa Strategy with planned investment of US $24 billion over the next 10 years. The goals of the strategy are to help eliminate extreme poverty in Africa by 2025; end hunger and malnutrition in Africa by 2025; make Africa a net food exporter, and move Africa to the top of export-orientated global value chains where it has comparative advantage.

The strategy includes agricultural finance models that will benefit youth, as well as other groups. It will rely on the ‘jobs for youth in Africa strategy’ to increase the representation of youth in agriculture and agribusiness and equip them with the necessary skills to be successful.

Foreign Affairs / 17 Nigerians To Be Arraigned In South Africa by CasaFFa(f): 3:55pm On Jan 24, 2018

Seventeen Nigerian nationals will on Tuesday, January 23, appear before a Rustenburg magistrate court in South Africa, after they were arrested for public violence and possession of dangerous weapons, African News Agency reports.

The Nigerians were arrested on Sunday night, January 21, for allegedly staging a ‘revenge attack’ against South Africans.

eagleee.com gathers that the revenge attack was reportedly staged following the death of a Nigerian man whose body was found in a stream on Friday, January 19, in Rustenberg.

The deceased, believed to be a drug lord, was bundled into a taxi with another individual, before his murder. The other person was not harmed.
The deputy chairman of the Tlhabane Community Policing Forum, Israel Maimane, and another man were subsequently accused of the murder.

However, both men were released at the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, January 22.

Culture / Alaafin Of Oyo Reveals What Traditional Rulers Should Do About Herdsmen Killings by CasaFFa(f): 1:03pm On Jan 24, 2018
Source: Eagleee Source

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, has said dialogue will play a key role in the resolution of herdsmen-farmers’ crisis.

He warned traditional rulers not to escalate tensions.

In a statement released on Sunday, Oba Adeyemi called for peace and urged security agencies to work for the unity of Nigeria.

The monarch, however, decried the use of firearms, including AK-47 rifles, to protect cattle.

“In those days, sticks were the only weapons with which breeders directed their cattle. When was it the practice that Fulani breeders would arm themselves to the teeth just to protect their cattle? In the past, part of the guidance which breeders gave to their cattle was to ensure that they did not destroy farm crops along their ways.

“But today, with the arm at their disposal, some Fulani breeders choose to target green leaves of farmers’ crops as good protein for their cattle and, therefore, lead their cattle aggressively to that direction.

“The greatest challenge facing the country at the moment is the herdsmen. The recent Benue State experience is too fresh to be forgotten so soon,”‎ he said.

Oba Adeyemi advised other traditional rulers not to use any religious or ethnic justification in the present situation.

“The institution of traditional rulers should use both individuals and collective efforts to quell the crisis from further escalation. It is unfortunate that some highly placed traditional rulers should see the recent Benue incident as a justified reprisal quoting fictitious and imaginary figures of similar incident that had happened at another neighbouring state.

“We have managed in Oyo area to ensure that the cattle herdsmen are kept in proper place and the farmer’s crops and interest are adequately protected,” he added.

Salaries for Kenyan officials have been converted from Kenyan Shillings to Nigerian Naira using current conversion rate of 3.52 Nigerian Naira to 1 Kenyan Shilling.

You can see Nigerian Ministers' salaries are well padded with allowances of all sorts, however Kenyan Ministers have massive loans granted for housing and vehicles, which increases the overall salary total. I would assume those loan amounts are the maximum available and repayment is required, but I will welcome insights from Kenyans as to whether my assumptions are correct and about any salary items that are missing.

It would also be cool if you comment with other comparisons between Nigerian and Kenyan politicians.

42 years after the government grabbed their land to construct Aso Rock and create the Federal Capital Territory, the native residents of Abuja finally have the legal right to representation in Nigeria's government.

On Monday January 15 2018, the Court of Appeal in Abuja declared that "indigenous inhabitants of Abuja are indeed entitled to a ministerial representation in the Federal Executive Council as provided by the combined provisions of Sections 147 (3), 299, 14 (3) and 42 of 1999 Constitution.

"The Court also declared that persistent denial and refusal of past and current presidents to so appoint an indigene of FCT Abuja as a minister in the federal executive council (FEC) since May 1999 tantamount to a gross violation of the said constitutional right against discrimination."

Besides other parties like Democratic Alliance (DA), APC, according to its state chairman, Frank Ukonga, would also hold its primaries tomorrow while the Labour Party has confirmed a human rights activist, Curtis Ugbo as its candidate for Oredo Local Government Area.

The major opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said it was challenging the procedure and processes for the election.

In a related development, a former governorship aspirant of the APC, Blessing Agbomhere warned the leadership of the party against imposition and disenfranchisement of candidates in the party ahead.

Agbomhere in a chat with newsmen in Benin City said that the barring of certain persons from seeking elective office under the Edo APC should have started during the 2016 governorship election.

He said the action if allowed is undemocratic and unacceptable as it is capable of causing disunity within the party.

“If they wanted to place this caveat, they should have started it from the 2016 governorship election. Godwin Obaseki worked in government with Oshiomhole, he contested and became governor, Philip Shaibu was in government, he contested and became deputy governor. Crime / EFCC Discovers Diezani Withdrew $1.3b Without Authorisation by CasaFFa(f): 9:51am On Jan 23, 2018
Source: Eagleee http://eagleee.com/detail?newsId=527740

Former minister of petroleum resources Diezani Alison-Madueke has been linked to a fresh corruption scandal as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) discovered an unauthorised withdrawal of $1.3 billion from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) account.

The money was withdrawn from the NNPC account without the approval of the National Assembly of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), under the guise of using it to fight kidnapping and other security threats in Nigeria, The Nation reports.

The former coordinating minister for the economy and minister of finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was also said to be unaware of the withdrawal of the money from the NNPC account.

During an interrogation by the EFCC, a former group executive director, Finance and Accounts of NNPC, Bernard Otti, made available some documents, including approvals to withdraw the $1.3 billion by Alison-Madueke.

Rather than taking proper steps before withdrawing such huge amount, Alison-Madueke only relied on a memo from ex-president Goodluck Jonathan without recourse to the board of the NNPC.

In two other instances, Jonathan wrote on two other requests mandating the former minister to take part of the cash from either NNPC Security Vote Account or from the “Gas Fund”.

Some 1,400 migrants were plucked from overcrowded boats off the coast of Libya on Tuesday, Italy's coastguard said, and two bodies were recovered.

Vessels belonging to the Italian coastguard and finance police, the European Union anti-smuggling operation, Sophia, and ships run by humanitarian groups took part in 11 rescue operations, a statement said.

No details about the nationalities of those rescued were given, nor was there further information about the deaths.

Though hundreds of thousands of migrants have reached Europe via Italy after setting off in boats from North Africa over the past four years, it is unusual to see so many rescued on a single day during the winter when the seas tend to be rough.

So far this year 974 migrants had reached Italy by sea, down from 2,393 during the same period last year, the Interior Ministry said earlier on Tuesday before the latest rescues.

Crime / Traditional Healer Arrested For Fake Pregnancies by CasaFFa(f): 11:02am On Jan 18, 2018
Source: http://eagleee.com/detail?newsId=522270

Police in Guinea have arrested a traditional healer for allegedly giving at least 100 women medicine which she said would make them pregnant.

Many of the women got symptoms of pregnancy, such as morning sickness and swollen bellies, for more than 15 months, but they never fell pregnant.

The traditional healer has been arrested with two alleged accomplices.

About 200 women from the Dabompa area on the outskirts of the capital, Conarky, were present at the paramilitary police's anti-criminal department following the arrest of N’Fanta Camara, accusing her of being a "trickster". She denies any wrongdoing

The women are just some of the victims who were allegedly given potions that had adverse medical effects on them.

The victims said they experienced pregnancy symptoms for 12 to 16 months but found they were not pregnant after medical examination.

Ms Camara had allegedly told the women not to seek medical advice.

Police doctor Mamadouba Camara, who examined more than 40 women, says they are likely to suffer long term negative consequences as a result of the treatment.

One of the victims narrates her experience
It’s been a year now since we first went to see this woman. During our first visit she gave us some medicines of leaves and herbs that made us vomit and [we] frequented the toilet a lot. She assured us that this was good for us as long as these were the reactions we were experiencing.

On a second visit, she gave us some more herbs and leaves which we boiled and drank. As one continues to take these medicines, the stomach starts to rise a bit. After a while, we visited again. She examined us by just touching our bellies and she declared us pregnant.

However, she gives us strict instructions not to go to the hospital because no doctor can treat this pregnancy because they can’t even see it. We experienced our normal menstrual cycle during this period, and some of our colleagues told us that they bled profusely during their cycle.

On the day she declares any woman pregnant, we give her a set of wrappers and a hen, after initially having paid her 300,000 francs ($564; £408) for the entire process.”

Accused Traditional Healer, N'Fanta Camara, denies wrongdoing

Ms Camara spoke to journalists in Sousou, the Guinean lingua franca, saying that she administers the treatment but leaves it to "God" to give the women children.

"The women who come to me, the first question I ask them is whether they believe in God. I ask them that question and tell them that it is only God that gives children to women and not me. I don’t normally wait for their replies but we start the process. I work very hard to help them realize their dream but the rest is in the hands of God."

The head of the anti-criminal department, Moussa Tiergboro Camara, alleged that the traditional healer has been making a lot of money from her victims:

"If we take the proportion of 50 women visiting her daily, then she makes 450 francs ($846, £613) a month. As such, she is capable of constructing a... building out of these women's cash."

Aside from the obvious outrage, is everyone in Guinea named Camara?
Celebrities / Why Most Celebrity Relationships Fail By Deji Olabode by CasaFFa(f): 4:32pm On Jan 17, 2018

So, who really wants to be a celebrity? I think deep down, we all do. We all yearn to be celebrated. We all yearn to attain the peak of our various professions.

This is a very natural desire in all of us. What we however aren't aware of, is the personal and relational price we have to pay for staying at the top of our game. Hardly does a week go by, without the news telling us about another celebrity break up. These ranges from high profile divorces to clandestine sexual affairs to even violent physical abuses.

Because it is my earnest expectation that all who read me will someday be masters of their field, I want to give my personal perspectives about why such high profile love failures are so common in our day.

Poor work-life balance
Most celebrities work pretty hard to attain and maintain the peak of their professions. What eludes them is the fact that it will take similar hard work to make their love lives work. They often are prone to neglecting their personal relationships, while hoping that their love lives will work out automatically. One celebrity evangelist had been on the road so much, that when his young daughter was brought to him, he couldn't recognize his own child, but was asking the custodian, who the cute little girl belonged to... "God's Wives" also highlights the importance of and need for individual and societal help in supporting widows in Nigeria.

God’s Wives is packed with truthful insight into the lives of some widows. It evokes emotion whilst reminding us that there is indeed a husband to the widows and father to the fatherless – God.

Crime / Kidnapped NCDMB Official Released After 8 Days In Captivity by CasaFFa(f): 3:00pm On Jan 17, 2018
Source: Eagleee http://eagleee.com/detail?newsId=514418

Numudogio was abducted by unknown gunmen on January 5, 2018, along the Brass-Nembe waterways.

His abductors were said to have contacted his family, demanding N30 million as ransom. Family members refused to confirm whether any money was paid.

A leader of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Amiebi Turner, condemned the kidnap and urged the victim not to be traumatised by the incident.

Turner also commended the former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Farah Dagogo, for contracting Martins Kelvin of Dubari Global Resources for the surveillance of the Nembe/Brass axis, to secure the Attio crude pipeline flowing from Nembe to Bonny.

The IYC Leader said it was unfortunate that the Nembe-Brass route had become a point where criminal activities were being carried out.

He said: “We are happy for the release of the abducted NCDMB staff. We believe that this will not happen again, especially with the appointment of Lugard as the Chief Security officer of that axis. His presence will no doubt quell all issues of insecurity.

“We call on federal, state and local governments to close ranks and work closely with him to uproot all illegal bunkering and criminal activities causing mayhem in the axis.”

Politics / Oyo Women Will Not Compromise Political Rights - Women Leader by CasaFFa(f): 3:55pm On Jan 16, 2018
Source: Eagleee http://eagleee.com/detail?newsId=516345
Adegbite, the President, National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) in Oyo State, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Monday.

“Women in the state are poised and ready to use their votes rightly in the coming political dispensation in enhancing women development.

“Gone are the days when women sell their rights to vote for politicians. Oyo State women are more enlightened and determined ever than before to vote wisely.

“They know that their voter cards are their power to change their destinies and those of their children for a better future,’’ she said.

Adegbite advised all women from age 18 and above to ensure that they registered to enable their exercise their rights to vote.

She called on all market women leaders, civil societies and NGOs to design sensitisation and advocacy campaigns to encourage women not to sell their voting rights.

She said that selling their power to vote for a pittance offered by politicians would result to losing their constitutional rights.

Adegbite, also a former president of NCWS said women in Oyo State and the country at large were ready to cooperate with government and INEC to ensure a successful transition in 2019.

She called on women to take active parts in politics by contesting for positions at the local, state and federal levels.

According to her, this is the right time to start preparing for this in order to form a formidable force in the national politics.

She said that the NCWS in the South West had concluded plans to embark on advocacy and sensitisation visits and programmes to relevant groups in various communities.

“We shall pay advocacy visits to religious groups, market women and leaders, secondary schools, grassroots and other relevant organisations.

“We will do our duties and support the government by ensuring that women play their roles right in the electioneering campaigns and beyond,’’

Music/Radio / Onyeka Onwenu Takes Music Distributors To Court by CasaFFa(f): 3:00pm On Jan 16, 2018
Source: Eagleee http://eagleee.com/detail?newsId=518219

Veteran musician, Onyeka Onwenu was at the Lagos High Court yesterday, where her N205million suit against Iroking, a music and movie distributor was heard.

The elegant stallion, as she is fondly called, had on Sunday, sent a public broadcast announcing her legal move over an alleged copyright infringement, which she described as “massive violation of my musical copyright dues and the illegal exploitation of my intellectual property.”

She said: “For years, Iroking profited from the sale of my music, even after a two-year contract it signed with me had elapsed. For years, also, they denied that they were doing so, they denied that they had made any profits from their illegal exploits.

“When they were caught in the lie, they wanted to settle but refused to show up for meetings.“Iroking as a Company is arrogant and has no regard for the people, Artistes whose works and labor have made them successful.

“We are therefore suing to make a point. Artistes have a right to profit from their Intellectual Property and labor. Nigeria has Copyright Laws which ought to be respected. The music industry has been built up and sustained by artistes and entrepreneurs like me. I demand to be protected by the Laws of my Country. Iroking must pay for this violation.”Onwenu urged other artistes to be vigilant, and wake up to their rights, especially in the internet era.“It is also my hope that other Artistes will wake up and demand for what is due them.

Many do not know that their music is being exploited on YouTube and other carriers. Some Record Companies are selling our music on the internet and claiming ownership of the Copyright. If only we would pay attention, Artistes would discover that while they had been doing all the creative work, investing in their careers and in the industry at large, someone else is collecting all the profit. Enough is Enough! Arise Nigerian artistes and take back what belongs to you. You have been cheated for far too long,” she said.

Crime / At Least 10 Killed In Fresh Attacks On Kaduna Communities by CasaFFa(f): 11:58am On Jan 15, 2018
Source: Eagleee http://eagleee.com/detail?newsId=515911

At least 10 people were feared killed and even more sustained severe injuries in new attacks on two communities in Kaduna State.

Properties were also looted and houses razed during the predawn attacks which witnesses told us occurred in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, about 125 kilometers west of Kaduna town, and bore the marks of killer herdsmen.

“The herdsmen entered the villages between Friday night and early Saturday morning and killed about 10 people,” a witness said, preferring not to be named.

The Kaduna State police commissioner, Agyole Abeh confirmed the attacks to us Saturday evening but said only four were killed and five injured.

“We have since deployed ‘Operation Dofaji’ and other police components to the area,” Mr. Abeh said.

Witnesses who reported the incident to us said the armed intruders stormed the village of Dangaji around 8:00 p.m. Friday, killing many and leaving several injured.

Another attack in a nearby community of Unguwar Gajere was also hit in a predawn assault by the unidentified suspects, who are still at large at the time of filing this report Saturday evening.

It was in Unguwar Gajere, which falls under Kutemeshi District, that the attackers killed 10 people on Saturday morning, witnesses said.

It was not immediately clear why the attackers struck in the two villages.

While deadly attacks are not uncommon in Birnin Gwari, which falls under Kaduna Central Senatorial District, most of the deadly incidents in recent years have been blamed more on armed bandits than herdsmen.

At least 20 were reported killed in an April 2015 attack which the police treated as a case of armed robbery.

Attacks relating to the alleged rustling of cows in the area had also been reported in recent years.

Mr. Abeh indicated that the latest attacks involved suspected herdsmen and members of the local vigilante groups, but did not elaborate, saying he was at a meeting.

The locals said it was true that the vigilante men tried to repel the invaders, but were largely overpowered.

“They caused a lot of damage because the vigilante groups were not adequately equipped to contain them,” a witness said.

The attacks come as the attention of the country remains largely focused on the recent killings in Benue State.

Politics / 'is Nigeria Under A Curse Or Blessing' By The Passerby by CasaFFa(f): 10:44am On Jan 15, 2018
Source: Eagleee http://eagleee.com/detail?newsId=511953

Wait, I am a Nigerian and a proud one at that. No matter wherever I find myself, I will still represent Nigeria. In my next life if given the chance to choose, I will still come back to NIgeria.

Nigeria is one of the few countries in the world that is blessed in all ramification. It doesn't matter where you keep us, we will still strive. We are natural adapters and adjusters. We can adjust to almost all situations in the world.

Despite the fact we are so blessed with all these, we are still under an invincible curse. How come we have been backwards in the aspect of national development? How come we cannot move forward like other nations? How come our peace is threatened on a daily basis?

Well, I don't think we are under a curse. I believe we are under a blessing. We are so blessed that we have decided to allow our blessings pull us apart. We are so blessed that we have used the income from our resources to purchase what will kill us all. We are so blessed that we cannot live in peace for even a moment. We are under a blessing.

Politics / Unpaid Kaduna Waste Collection Workers Storm Environment Ministry by CasaFFa(f): 11:19am On Jan 12, 2018
Source: Eagleee http://eagleee.com/detail?newsId=507634

Irked by non payment of their entitlements, workers of the environmental waste management company ZL, Global Alliance Nigeria Limited engaged by the Kaduna state government stormed the Ministry of Environment to authenticate claims by the company that the company is being owed money running into millions by the state through the ministry.

The workers who were peaceful in their demand expressed worries why inspite of discharging their duties, they are not being paid as at when due.

Some of those who spoke to DAILY POST asked the Permanent Secretary who stood in for the Commissioner to confirm whether the claim of the company was true or not.

“We feel your pains and understand your complaints, but I have the authority of the commissioner to inform you that the situation will be addressed accordingly.

“She has also asked me to schedule a meeting with her and your leaders to sort out the grey areas accordingly.

“The way and manner you have composed yourselves and articulate your complaints with maturity is commendable, and as a ministry we will do the needful to resolve the matter,” he assured.

One of the leaders of the workers and the APC ward chairman of Maiburuji in Kaduna North local government area, Ashiru Sani Hussaini who spoke on behalf of the workers said, “We are here to find out the claims of the company we work for that the ministry is withholding some of their monies which is making it difficult for the company to pay us our salaries in full and as at when due.

Responding, the Permanent Secretary, Raubilu Shehu Ibrahim, who addressed the workers confirmed that the company was indeed being owed some money and appealed to the workers to exercise patience, assuring them that the ministry was doing everything possible to effect the outstanding payments.
